A Comparison Of Consumer Sensory Acceptance And Value Of Domestic Beef Steaks And Steaks From A Branded, Argentine Beef Program, K. M. Killinger, Chris R. Calkins, W. J. Umberger, D. M. Feuz, Kent M. Eskridge Jan 2004

A Comparison Of Consumer Sensory Acceptance And Value Of Domestic Beef Steaks And Steaks From A Branded, Argentine Beef Program, K. M. Killinger, Chris R. Calkins, W. J. Umberger, D. M. Feuz, Kent M. Eskridge

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

To determine consumer sensory acceptance and value of branded, Argentine (grass-finished, aged 30+ d) and domestic (U.S. grain-finished beef, aged 9 d) strip loins were paired based on similar Warner- Bratzler shear force values (P = 0.34) and similar marbling levels (P = 0.82). Consumers in Chicago, IL, and San Francisco, CA (n = 124 per city), evaluated one pair of Argentine and domestic steaks, and had the opportunity to participate in a silent, sealed-bid auction to purchase steaks matching the taste panel samples. Consumers were categorized into three groups based on overall acceptability ratings: 1) those who found Argentine …

Selective Primary Hepatocyte Adhesion On Polyelectrolyte Multilayer : Template For Patterned Cell Co-Culture, Srivatsan Kidambi, Ilsoon Lee, Christina Chan

The ability of surfaces to modulate cellular behavior such as adhesion, migration, proliferation and differentiation is an important facet of tissue and organ formation and in the eventual realization of functional biomaterials. The presence of micro or nanostructures on a surface permits the manipulation of cell-substrate and cell-cell interactions to better control cellular function and behavior. Commonly, proteins and cells indiscriminately attach onto medically implantable surfaces, which may ultimately lead to undesired fibrous encapsulation, detrimental clinical complications, increased risk of infection, and poor device performance. 1, 2 Consequently, by generating so-called bioinert materials, one may attempt to first reduce any …

Predicting Predation Efficiency Of Biocontrol Agents: Linking Behavior Of Individuals And Population Dynamics, Brigitte Tenhumberg Jan 2004

Predicting Predation Efficiency Of Biocontrol Agents: Linking Behavior Of Individuals And Population Dynamics, Brigitte Tenhumberg

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Behavioral ecology and population ecology are two separate branches of ecology; studies linking the effect of individual behavior and population dynamics are rare. This paper connects a stochastic optimal foraging model of insect predators with an age structured population model of its prey. I modeled syrphid larvae feeding on cereal aphids, an interaction critical to cereal crops in Germany. The key stochastic element in this model is the foraging success of predators, which influences survival and developmental time of predators and mortality of the prey population. The model predicts that the level of control incurred by predators is highest if …
