Turnover During A Corporate Merger: How Workplace Network Change Influences Staying, M. Woehler, Theresa M. Floyd, N. Shah, J. E. Marineau, W. Sung, Travis J. Grosser, J. Fagan, G. Labianca
Management and Marketing Faculty Publications
The upheaval created by a merger can precipitate voluntary employee turnover, causing merging organizations to lose valuable knowledge-based resources and competencies precisely when they are needed most to achieve the merger’s integration goals. While prior research has shown that employees’ connections to coworkers reduce their likelihood of leaving, we know little about how personal social networks should change to increase the likelihood of staying through the disruptive post-merger integration period. In a pre–post study of social network change, we investigate over 15 million email communications between employees within two large merging consumer goods firms over 2 years. We use insights …
Risk, Trust And Emergent Groups: Covid-19 Mutual Aid Networks, Allison M. Cutuli
Risk, Trust And Emergent Groups: Covid-19 Mutual Aid Networks, Allison M. Cutuli
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Throughout the world, thousands of local mutual aid networks (MANs) have emerged in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mutual aid involves exchanging resources, connecting people to services and building community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, mutual aid includes sharing COVID-19 information, social support, food and emergency funds in informal local networks. To learn more about these community networks and explore the perspectives and experiences of MAN participants around the United States, I conducted survey research. There are 101 individuals from 16 MANs in 11 states included in the survey sample.
There are two parts to this research. The first explores descriptive …
Discourse Of Renewal: A Qualitative Analysis Of The University Of Montana’S Covid-19 Crisis Communication, Haley Renae Gabel
Discourse Of Renewal: A Qualitative Analysis Of The University Of Montana’S Covid-19 Crisis Communication, Haley Renae Gabel
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The COVID-19 pandemic has proven to be a public health crisis that has affected lives and impacted organizations across the world. The pandemic has interrupted student learning and threatened universities nationwide. Crises are trying times for organizations, and when faced with a crisis, an organization has an obligation to keep its members informed; therefore, it must carefully choose how to respond and communicate about the crisis. This study uses discourse of renewal theory as a lens to analyze the University of Montana’s communication about COVID-19, studying 37 pages of university emails and documents on the university website. Results indicate that …
Evaluating A Need For Somatic Access To Classical Objects In Public Museums, Jerod G. Peitsmeyer
Evaluating A Need For Somatic Access To Classical Objects In Public Museums, Jerod G. Peitsmeyer
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Physical experiences with ancient art objects in museums are rare. Display paradigms in most public institutions continue to propagate systems of participant interaction that reinforces unequal power structures. The Montana Musuem of Art and Culture (MMAC) is the current custodian of an ancient, Rhodian wine amphora that provides an opportunity to examine a novel system of somatic participation. This proposal upends traditional gatekeeping practices and serves as a powerful and progressive, humanist touchstone; an olive branch extended to the general public from behind the walls of higher education and the ramparts of privileged scholarship. This study reimagines the amphora's future …
The Great Turning: A Call For Systems-Thinkers, Gabriella M. Demarce
The Great Turning: A Call For Systems-Thinkers, Gabriella M. Demarce
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
David Orr, in an article on ecological intelligence reminds us that the modern world was shaped by people who did not understand that our social and economic systems could not coexist with the rest of the biological or natural systems on Earth (Orr, 1994). My research is rooted in Orr’s argument and discovering ways to shift this degrading paradigm. With my belief in the power of education in empowering youth and my background in environmental and climate change studies, I see a future in great need of people who holistically understand the functions of all types of systems and can …
Measuring Multicultural Competencies With Sexual And Gender Minorities: A Study Of Therapy Dyads, Hillary Anne Powell
Measuring Multicultural Competencies With Sexual And Gender Minorities: A Study Of Therapy Dyads, Hillary Anne Powell
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Although there have been targeted efforts to improve mental health care provision to SGM individuals in the last several decades, SGM mental health consumers report ongoing barriers to therapy, including providers' poor SGM-specific multicultural competencies. The current project examines (1) differences in perceptions of SGM-specific multicultural competence between providers and their clients, and (2) how perceptions of SGM multicultural competence are predictive of variation in treatment outcomes. To this end, 73 SGM mental health consumers and 53 of their therapists were recruited to independently evaluate the mental health provider's SGM-specific multicultural competence at two time points, with respective retention rates …
Organizational Influence On Knowledge Co-Production, Evora Dakota Glenn
Organizational Influence On Knowledge Co-Production, Evora Dakota Glenn
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches are needed to effectively address the challenges facing our complex social-ecological systems. To meet this need, many approaches, including co-production, have been proposed to overcome the difficult relationship between science and governance, often termed a ‘gap’, which can continue to impede natural resource problem solving. Co-production is an iterative process that engages scientists, managers, and community members in knowledge creation and problem solving. Evidence indicates that participants are more likely to view co-produced knowledge as more salient, legitimate, and credible, and that they are more likely to use it. Evidence also indicates that this iterative and …
The Role Of Experiential Learning In Developing Multicultural Competence, Kaoru Allison Powell
The Role Of Experiential Learning In Developing Multicultural Competence, Kaoru Allison Powell
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Although much importance has been placed on training programs to develop multiculturally competent service providers, the question remains as to when and where clinicians acquire their multicultural competence (MCC). Currently, most training programs appear to focus on the development of multicultural awareness and knowledge, without adequate focus on skills. However, experientially based learning exercises are associated with skills development in many areas, including general clinical skills development. Thus, students who engage in higher levels of experiential learning in their multicultural training may rate themselves as more competent with multicultural skills than students with less frequent experiential learning. I hypothesize that …

Building Strategic Alliances To Support Advocacy And Planning For Digital Preservation, Erin Baucom, Tammy Troup, Conor Cote, Sara Mannheimer
Building Strategic Alliances To Support Advocacy And Planning For Digital Preservation, Erin Baucom, Tammy Troup, Conor Cote, Sara Mannheimer
Mansfield Library Faculty Publications
While the business benefits of digital asset management are well-documented, the benefits and importance of digital preservation are not. Digital preservation is a sustained commitment to maintenance activities which require a system of plans, policies, and implementation workflows. Coordination across departments is helpful for digital asset management, but it is mandatory for digital preservation. The Montana Digital Preservation Working Group (DPWG) operated under a five-point plan for collaboration between organizations. The plan consisted of cultivating shared knowledge, assessing the current digital preservation landscape at each institution, advocating for the value of digital preservation, implementing digital preservation practices, and sustaining the …
Cruising To Be A Board Gamer: Understanding Socialization Relating To Board Gaming And The Dice Tower, Benjamin Wassink
Cruising To Be A Board Gamer: Understanding Socialization Relating To Board Gaming And The Dice Tower, Benjamin Wassink
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The Dice Tower consists of 30 professional board gamers and has the largest online following with 60,000 podcast listeners and over 140,000 YouTube subscribers (Dice Tower, 2017a). This study uses Kramer’s Multilevel Communication Model of Voluntary Socialization (MCMVS) to understand how the Dice Tower gains followers and socializes others to become board gamers. This study applies MCMVS to a population with more ambiguous membership boundaries than volunteer organizations, specifically socialization to board game leisure. Through interviews of 18 participants and participant observation during a board gaming cruise hosted by the Dice Tower this study examines the role of the Dice …
The Relationship Between Memorable Messages And Identity Construction, Raphaela P. Barros Campbell
The Relationship Between Memorable Messages And Identity Construction, Raphaela P. Barros Campbell
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
A qualitative analysis is reported here, in which 22 international students were interviewed about their overall experiences studying abroad, as well as memorable messages received and the context in which those were communicated. Scholars like Larson and Gill (2017) and Alvesson (2010) have focused on the role communication plays in constructing identity. With that in mind, Knapp et al.’s (1981) concept of memorable messages informs how specific messages influence individuals’ sense of who they are. This study expands knowledge on the relationship between memorable messages and international students’ identity construction, focusing on the impact of messages exchanged before and during …
