The upheaval created by a merger can precipitate voluntary employee turnover, causing merging organizations to lose valuable knowledge-based resources and competencies precisely when they are needed most to achieve the merger’s integration goals. While prior research has shown that employees’ connections to coworkers reduce their likelihood of leaving, we know little about how personal social networks should change to increase the likelihood of staying through the disruptive post-merger integration period. In a pre–post study of social network change, we investigate over 15 million email communications between employees within two large merging consumer goods firms over 2 years. We use insights …

Building Strategic Alliances To Support Advocacy And Planning For Digital Preservation, Erin Baucom, Tammy Troup, Conor Cote, Sara Mannheimer
Building Strategic Alliances To Support Advocacy And Planning For Digital Preservation, Erin Baucom, Tammy Troup, Conor Cote, Sara Mannheimer
Mansfield Library Faculty Publications
While the business benefits of digital asset management are well-documented, the benefits and importance of digital preservation are not. Digital preservation is a sustained commitment to maintenance activities which require a system of plans, policies, and implementation workflows. Coordination across departments is helpful for digital asset management, but it is mandatory for digital preservation. The Montana Digital Preservation Working Group (DPWG) operated under a five-point plan for collaboration between organizations. The plan consisted of cultivating shared knowledge, assessing the current digital preservation landscape at each institution, advocating for the value of digital preservation, implementing digital preservation practices, and sustaining the …

Employees’ Responses To An Organizational Merger: Intraindividual Change In Organizational Identification, Attachment, And Turnover, W. Sung, M. Woehler, J. Fagan, Travis J. Grosser, Theresa M. Floyd, G. Labianca
Management and Marketing Faculty Publications
The authors used pre-post merger data from 599 employees experiencing a major corporate merger to compare 3 conceptual models based on the logic of social identity theory (SIT) and exchange theory to explain employees’ merger responses. At issue is how perceived change in employees’ own jobs and roles (i.e., personal valence) and perceived change in their organization’s status and merger appropriateness (i.e., organizational valence) affect their changing organizational identification, attachment attitudes, and voluntary turnover. The first model suggests that organizational identification and organizational attachment develop independently and have distinct antecedents. The second model posits that organizational identification mediates the relationships …

The Writing Center: Reports
As a university hub for campus conversations about writing and other forms of communication, the University of Montana Writing Center administers programs to help undergraduate and graduate students in all disciplines become more versatile and effective thinkers, writers, and readers. In one-to-one and small-group tutoring sessions and whole-class workshops, tutors help students recognize their strengths and weaknesses as communicators and to practice strategies appropriate to various communication contexts. In addition, the Writing Center collaborates with faculty to provide instruction that positively impacts student performance, and supports faculty to promote their own development as writers.
