Validation Of The Social Communication Questionnaire (Scq) In A Hispanic Sample: Understanding The Impact Of Expressed Emotion, Vanessa Gonzalez

Open Access Dissertations

The SCQ is a popular screener for ASDs derived from the gold-standard diagnostic interview. This study examined the validity of the SCQ in a Hispanic sample. Additionally, the mother's expressed emotion toward her child with ASD was examined. Participants included 217 Hispanic and non-Hispanic white mothers of children with and without ASDs ages 4-10. The actual diagnostic status of all children was determined using a historical review of records. ROC curve analysis yielded much lower sensitivity and specificity than the original validation study, with very little difference found between the 15 and 22 cutoffs. A cutoff score of 12 performed …

Bethe Ansatz And Open Spin-1/2 Xxz Quantum Spin Chain, Rajan Murgan Apr 2008

Bethe Ansatz And Open Spin-1/2 Xxz Quantum Spin Chain, Rajan Murgan

Open Access Dissertations

The open spin-1/2 XXZ quantum spin chain with general integrable boundary terms is a fundamental integrable model. Finding a Bethe Ansatz solution for this model has been a subject of intensive research for many years. Such solutions for other simpler spin chain models have been shown to be essential for calculating various physical quantities, e.g., spectrum, scattering amplitudes, finite size corrections, anomalous dimensions of certain field operators in gauge field theories, etc. The first part of this dissertation focuses on Bethe Ansatz solutions for open spin chains with nondiagonal boundary terms. We present such solutions for some special cases where …

Receptor Selective Coactivators:Characterization Of A Novel Protein-Protein Interaction Module In Steroid Hormone Receptor Signaling, Sarath C. Dhananjayan Apr 2008

Receptor Selective Coactivators:Characterization Of A Novel Protein-Protein Interaction Module In Steroid Hormone Receptor Signaling, Sarath C. Dhananjayan

Open Access Dissertations

WW-domain binding protein-2 (WBP-2) was cloned as an E6-associated protein (E6-AP) interacting protein and its role in steroid hormone receptor (SHR) function was investigated. We show that WBP-2 differs from other SHR coactivators, as it specifically enhanced the transactivation functions of progesterone receptor (PR) and estrogen receptor (ER alpha), whereas it had no significant effect on the androgen receptor, glucocorticoid receptor or the activation functions of p53 or VP-16. We also demonstrated that, like other well characterized coactivators, WBP-2 contains an intrinsic activation domain. Depletion of endogenous WBP-2 with small interfering RNAs indicated that normal physiological protein level of WBP-2 …

Automatic Classification Of Long Term Involuntary Spontaneous Emg, Jeffrey S. Winslow Apr 2008

Automatic Classification Of Long Term Involuntary Spontaneous Emg, Jeffrey S. Winslow

Open Access Dissertations

Involuntary electromyographic (EMG) activity has been recorded in the thenar (thumb) muscles of spinal cord injured (SCI) subjects for only short time periods (minutes), but it is unknown if this motor unit activity is ongoing. Longer duration EMG recordings can investigate the physiological significance of this neuromuscular activity. Analysis of these data is complex and time consuming. Since no software is currently capable of classifying 24 hours of data at a single motor unit level, the goal of this research was to devise an algorithm to automatically classify motor unit potentials over 24-hours. Twenty-four-hour, 2-channel thenar muscle EMG recordings were …

Concerto No. 2 For Organ And Orchestra, Dennis Janzer Apr 2008

Concerto No. 2 For Organ And Orchestra, Dennis Janzer

Open Access Dissertations

Concertos performable by upper-intermediate to advanced-level soloists and orchestras are numerous for most instruments. The organ is an exception, having limited repertoire available for organ and orchestra. The extensive listings of repertoire for youth concerto contests embody literature from varying periods and levels of difficulty. The organ, though accepted in numerous contests, has limited options regarding available repertoire. This organ concerto is written in a response to that void, and is composed to be of a comparable difficulty level to the keyboard concertos currently performed at youth concerto contests. The level may be identified as: “Advanced High School: Difficult; College: …

The Agulhas Undercurrent Experiment took place in February-March 2003 off the east coast of South Africa and included 112 CTD and LADCP casts along four cross-slope sections and three offshore sections. Direct absolute velocities in the Agulhas Current show a narrow and swift current, 180 km wide and up to 2 m s-1 in speed, that deepens as it flows south, eventually detaching from the continental slope at 36ºS. Results also show the northward Agulhas Undercurrent against the continental slope, beneath the Agulhas Current with peak velocities of 10 cm s-1. Several mesoscale cyclonic eddies extending down to the intermediate …

Service-Learning And The Promotion Of Social Responsibility, Dana Rasch Apr 2008

Service-Learning And The Promotion Of Social Responsibility, Dana Rasch

Open Access Dissertations

A number of scholars have identified a crisis in the field of education. Namely, students today are more self-absorbed and individualistic than ever before. In other words, they have few social commitments and lack a sense of community. This lack of social responsibility is particularly problematic in Colombia, where a privileged few enjoy all the spoils and the elite youth are groomed as the future leaders of the country. For many, hope is all but lost on these socially irresponsible students. On the other hand, some planners and critics believe that service-learning -- which connects community service to the classroom …

Belly Laughs: Body Humor In Contemporary American Literature And Film, David Gillota Mar 2008

Belly Laughs: Body Humor In Contemporary American Literature And Film, David Gillota

Open Access Dissertations

Belly Laughs: Body Humor in Contemporary American Literature and Film Scholars are more than happy to laugh at but seem somewhat reluctant to discuss body humor, which is perhaps the most neglected form of comedy in recent criticism. In this dissertation, I examine the ways in which contemporary American writers and filmmakers use body humor in their works, not only in moments of so-called "comic relief" but also as a valid way of exploring many of the same issues that postmodern artists typically interrogate in their more somber moments. The writers discussed in this project-Philip Roth, Thomas Pynchon, Charles Johnson, …

Interest Groups And The Politics Of Trade After The Cold War: The Case Of The U.S.-Jordan, Singapore And Chile Free Trade Agreements, Antonio Garrastazu Mar 2008

Interest Groups And The Politics Of Trade After The Cold War: The Case Of The U.S.-Jordan, Singapore And Chile Free Trade Agreements, Antonio Garrastazu

Open Access Dissertations

The politics of trade after the Cold War has transformed United States foreign policy. In fact, given the surge of interest in free trade agreements (FTAs) and the far-reaching political and economic repercussions of globalization, this thesis argues that the post-Cold War period, reinforced by the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, constitute a critical juncture in the history of U.S. international economic policy and trade diplomacy. The U.S. began to seek FTAs after 1989 as a way to maintain its strategic influence in international relations and counterbalance the formation of trading blocs such as the European Union (EU). Yet, despite …

Practice Related Plasticity: Functional And Cortical Changes In Individuals With Spinal Cord Injury Following Four Different Hand Training Interventions, Larisa Reed Hoffman Mar 2008

Practice Related Plasticity: Functional And Cortical Changes In Individuals With Spinal Cord Injury Following Four Different Hand Training Interventions, Larisa Reed Hoffman

Open Access Dissertations

Injury to the cervical spinal cord results in complete or partial loss of arm and hand function, severely limiting the performance of daily activities. Deficits in hand function in individuals with cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) are primarily due to a loss of descending motor pathways that are vital for fine control of the hand and fingers. In addition to these deficits, secondary plastic reorganization may create further loss of function. This thesis will explore the following questions: 1. What are the similarities and differences between cortical organization of muscles affected by a cervical SCI to those not affected by …

An Investigation Of The Electrical Short Circuit Characteristics Of Tin Whiskers, Karim J. Courey Mar 2008

An Investigation Of The Electrical Short Circuit Characteristics Of Tin Whiskers, Karim J. Courey

Open Access Dissertations

Existing risk simulations make the assumption that when a free tin whisker has bridged two adjacent exposed electrical conductors, the result is an electrical short circuit. This conservative assumption is made because shorting is a random event that has a currently unknown probability associated with it. Due to contact resistance electrical shorts may not occur at lower voltage levels. In these experiments, the effect of varying voltage on the breakdown of the contact resistance which leads to a short circuit was studied. From this data, the probability of an electrical short was estimated, as a function of voltage, given that …

The intervention utilized formative experiment methodology and a quasi-experimental time series design. Data sources and …

Planning To Perform: The Application Of Project Management Principles To Recital Preparation, Karen Ann Click Feb 2008

Planning To Perform: The Application Of Project Management Principles To Recital Preparation, Karen Ann Click

Open Access Dissertations

Many musicians, artists and other creative thinkers often struggle with organizational skills in preparation for events that require detailed planning, notably recital preparation. Musicians often find themselves ill-prepared and must reschedule the event, recycle music that they do not wish to perform, or ultimately perform at a lower standard. Currently, there is no standardized, established model for pianists or other types of musicians to guide them in setting up a recital and successfully executing all of its parts from start to finish. This study, through discussion of the employment of project management principles, aids artists in putting together a performance …

A Multi-Modal Approach For Face Modeling And Recognition, Mohammad Hossein Mahoor Jan 2008

A Multi-Modal Approach For Face Modeling And Recognition, Mohammad Hossein Mahoor

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation describes a new methodology for multi-modal (2-D + 3-D) face modeling and recognition. There are advantages in using each modality for face recognition. For example, the problems of pose variation and illumination condition, which cannot be resolved easily by using the 2-D data, can be handled by using the 3-D data. However, texture, which is provided by 2-D data, is an important cue that cannot be ignored. Therefore, we use both the 2-D and 3-D modalities for face recognition and fuse the results of face recognition by each modality to boost the overall performance of the system. In …

More Than The Sum Of Its Parts: Physical And Mechanistic Coupling In The Phage Lambda Red Recombinase, Gokhan Tolun Jan 2008

More Than The Sum Of Its Parts: Physical And Mechanistic Coupling In The Phage Lambda Red Recombinase, Gokhan Tolun

Open Access Dissertations

In many dsDNA viruses, a single-strand-annealing homologous recombination (SSA) reaction is catalyzed by a pair of proteins. In phage lambda, this system is called Red, and is composed of lambda exonuclease (Lambda-Exo, a 5' to 3' dsDNA exonuclease), and Red-Beta (a ssDNA binding protein and annealase). I examined the physical and mechanistic coupling of Lambda-Exo and Red-Beta and confirmed that these proteins form a complex with a 1:1 subunit stoichiometry. The size of this complex was shown to be close to one MDa, possibly composed of 12 Lambda-Exo and 12 Red-Beta monomers. Red-Beta decreased the extent of digestion of dsDNA …

The Outer Limits: Telomere Maintenance By Trf2 And G-Quadruplex Dna Structures, Ilene M. Pedroso Jan 2008

The Outer Limits: Telomere Maintenance By Trf2 And G-Quadruplex Dna Structures, Ilene M. Pedroso

Open Access Dissertations

Human telomeric DNA consists of tandem repeats of the sequence 5'-d(TTAGGG)-3' assembled into a nucleoprotein complex that functions to protect the ends of chromosomes. Such guanine-rich DNA is capable of forming a variety of G-quadruplexes, which in turn, can have varying functional consequences on telomere maintenance. G-quadruplex stabilizing ligands have been shown to induce chromosome end-to-end fusions, senescence and apoptosis, effects similar to the expression of a dominant-negative TTAGGG Repeat Factor 2 (TRF2). With this in mind, we analyzed the effect of sequence and length of human telomeric DNA, as well as cation conditions on G-quadruplex formation by native polyacrylamide …
