The Structural Changes Of The Hedge Fund Industry Over Time, Simeon Kawakami Dec 2012

The Structural Changes Of The Hedge Fund Industry Over Time, Simeon Kawakami

Business/Business Administration

Historically, the hedge fund industry is one of the fastest growing investment classes in the last decade. This study looks to analyze the hedge fund industry structural changes from 1994 to 2010. A premise for this study is previous research which shows small funds tend to outperform large funds. Parameters are set to determine the classification of a fund being small, medium, or large. The asset flows to each category are tracked overtime in order to show structural changes. For each category the number of small, medium, and large hedge funds in tracked over time. The results are inconclusive in …

The Effectiveness Of Sell Discipline Strategies In Institutional Portfolios, Ryan Kennedy Dec 2012

The Effectiveness Of Sell Discipline Strategies In Institutional Portfolios, Ryan Kennedy

Business/Business Administration

Prospect theory predicts that individuals will be risk seeking when faced with a potential loss. An implication is that investors may be reluctant to sell losing stocks, leading to potentially greater losses. This study explores whether institutional portfolio performance is significantly related to the manager’s stated sell discipline strategy. Six distinct sell discipline approaches are compared using four performance metrics. As predicted by prospect theory, this study finds sell discipline to be a statistically significant factor in performance for all performance metrics. The results also show that the best sell discipline strategy is dependent on which performance metric is used.

Terrorisk: The Impact Of Terrorist Attacks On Sovereign Bond Yield Spreads Of Targeted Countries, Slava Rar Dec 2012

Terrorisk: The Impact Of Terrorist Attacks On Sovereign Bond Yield Spreads Of Targeted Countries, Slava Rar

Business/Business Administration

This study estimates the effects of terrorism incidents on a nation’s borrowing costs. An event study approach is used to evaluate changes in sovereign-bond yield spreads after terrorist attacks occur. Prior research is not in consensus on whether the effect of terrorism on bond markets is significant, and no study shows why certain bond indices may rise while others may fall after a terrorist attack. This study does not find statistical significance, which suggests that the effect of an attack may depend on the targeted country. For terrorist researchers, this study is one step toward answering whether terrorists can manipulate …

Perceptions Of Mental Illness In The Legal System, Krista Wallace Dec 2012

Perceptions Of Mental Illness In The Legal System, Krista Wallace

Criminal Justice

Previous research suggests that there are stereotypes and misperceptions about the mentally ill population which affect juror’s decision making in cases where the insanity defense is raised. Many individuals believe it to be a “loophole” in the criminal justice system for offenders to escape punishment (Skeem and Golding, 2002). This study explores community perceptions of schizophrenia and personality disorders in a legal context. Results support that individuals are significantly less confident of their verdict decisions when the offender has a mental illness than when the offender has no mental illness. In addition, the presence of a mental illness significantly affects …

A Millenial Little Pieces: Selected Writings From A Gen-Y, Lauren Elizabeth Valentine Servideo

Journalism Program

This is an anthology of my favorite pieces written during my time at SUNY Albany. The subject matter of each piece differs wildly from the next, but they do share one thing in common, and that is my focus on character and cultural studies. Exploring and dissecting the works of Truman Capote, Tom Wolfe, Martha Gellhorn, and various other literary journalists throughout my undergraduate career has inspired the style of all the creative non-fiction included in A Millenial Little Pieces: Selected Writings from a Gen-Y.

Probing The T-Box Riboswitch: A Novel, High-Throughput Transcription Reporter Assay Using A Fluorophore-Binding Aptamer, Nishtha Modi May 2012

Probing The T-Box Riboswitch: A Novel, High-Throughput Transcription Reporter Assay Using A Fluorophore-Binding Aptamer, Nishtha Modi

Biological Sciences

In most Gram-positive bacteria, including important pathogens, expression of many aminoacyl tRNA synthetase (aaRS) genes is controlled by the tRNA substrate specific to each of these enzymes. This riboswitch regulatory mechanism is unique to Gram-positive bacteria and because correct and efficient aminoacylation of tRNAs is essential to an organism’s viability, it is an ideal target for the development of new antibiotics. The 5’-untranslated region (5’UTR) of the aaRS mRNA adopts a conformation that determines whether readthrough or termination of transcription occurs by interacting with unacylated or acylated tRNA, respectively. Our goal is to uncover a new class of small molecules …

The Senescence-Associated Secretory Phenotype (Sasp) And Redox-Dependent Invasion Of Metastatic Cancer Cells, Brooke A. Pati May 2012

The Senescence-Associated Secretory Phenotype (Sasp) And Redox-Dependent Invasion Of Metastatic Cancer Cells, Brooke A. Pati

Biological Sciences

Throughout your lifetime renewable tissues and those which are exposed to prolonged inflammation experience an accumulation of senescent cells. These cells have previously been shown to acquire the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) that promotes proliferation and tumorigenesis of epithelial cells, thus increasing the invasive ability of tumor cells (1). SASP is characterized by an upregulation in mRNA levels of a number of secretory factors, such as growth factors, cytokines, and chemokines. It has been shown that lifetime exposure to oxidative stress can influence cell cytoskeleton reorganization and influence aging processes (2). In addition matrix metalloproteinases are key SASP factors that …

Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Identification And Phylogenetic Analysis Of Pan Troglodytes Using Mitochondrial Dna Coding Region Sequences, Amanda Faris May 2012

Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Identification And Phylogenetic Analysis Of Pan Troglodytes Using Mitochondrial Dna Coding Region Sequences, Amanda Faris

Biological Sciences

Despite the close relationship humans share with chimpanzees, the evolutionary history of this species is relatively unknown. Due to its high copy number and high mutation rate, population genetic analyses of chimpanzees have focused on a 1.1 kilo-‐base segment of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) known as the control region. Earlier work based on analyses of the hypervariable region 1 (HVR-‐1), one of two fragments that make up the control region, support the separation of Upper Guinea and Gulf of Guinea chimpanzees into a monophyletic group separate from Central and East African chimpanzees. I aimed to compare and contrast the chimpanzee mtDNA …

Analyzing Tophets: Did The Phoenicians Practice Child Sacrifice?, Katelyn Dibenedetto May 2012

Analyzing Tophets: Did The Phoenicians Practice Child Sacrifice?, Katelyn Dibenedetto

Anthropology

This paper examines the controversies surrounding Phoenician religious practices and in particular, the Phoenician Tophet, a cemetery containing the cremated remains of infants and young children in clay jars. According to ancient Hebrew and Greek sources, in the ceremony known as mulk, the oldest son was placed on the arms of a bronze statue and dropped into a brazier below. Though these ancient authors were unanimous in criticizing Phoenician religious practices as cruel and savage, the use of these biased sources to conclude that child sacrifice did occur remains controversial. Both the Hebrew and Greek sources were xenophobic and furthermore, …

The Rapid Intensification Of Hurricane Gustav (2008), Jason H. Keefer May 2012

The Rapid Intensification Of Hurricane Gustav (2008), Jason H. Keefer

Atmospheric & Environmental Sciences

Hurricane Gustav was one of two major hurricanes that occurred in the Atlantic basin during the 2008 hurricane season. The storm caused more than $6 billion U. S. dollars of damage in Haiti, Jamaica, Cuba, and along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico from 25 August 2008 to 5 September 2008. The greatest amount of damage and highest number of casualties produced by the storm can be attributed to the rapid intensification of the hurricane. Rapid intensification (RI) of a tropical cyclone is defined as an increase in maximum sustained winds by 15.4 m s⁻¹ (30 kts) in a …

An Evaluation Of Cape Tendency In Tornado Outbreaks, Timothy W. Humphrey, Lance F. Bosart May 2012

An Evaluation Of Cape Tendency In Tornado Outbreaks, Timothy W. Humphrey, Lance F. Bosart

Atmospheric & Environmental Sciences

Previous studies (e.g., Rasmussen, 2003; Thompson et al., 2003) have examined the impact that instability has on the occurrence of tornadic supercells. However, few studies (e.g., Calas et al., 2000) have examined the impact that the rate of destabilization has on the development of severe convection. Utilizing a CAPE tendency equation derived by Emanuel (1994), this study examines the impact of the rate of atmospheric destabilization on the severity of convection. Comparing six hour analyses of CAPE tendency with observed tornado tracks from the 4-6 May 2007, 5-6 February 2008, and 17 June 2010 tornado outbreaks reveals a potential correlation …

Largescale Precursors To Major Lake Effect Snowstorms Lee Of Lake Erie, Hannah E. Attard, Ross A. Lazear May 2012

Largescale Precursors To Major Lake Effect Snowstorms Lee Of Lake Erie, Hannah E. Attard, Ross A. Lazear

Atmospheric & Environmental Sciences

Lake‐effect snowstorms are primarily a mesoscale feature; however, major lakeeffect snowstorms are linked closely to their synoptic environment. Thus, a lakeeffect system which lasts for more than 24 h cannot only be explained by the boundary layer; it is also associated with the upper tropospheric flow. This research will address whether major lake‐effect snow events off of Lake Erie can also be associated with large‐scale planetary features several days prior to event onset. The goal is to aid in the forecast process by increasing the accuracy and leadtime of lake‐effect snow forecasts. This study includes 31 cases recorded from the …

Stock Returns And The Franchise Value, Sean Landrigan May 2012

Stock Returns And The Franchise Value, Sean Landrigan

Business/Business Administration

An accurate predictive model of a firm’s future performance has been long sought after in the finance field. This study examines the relationship of a firm’s franchise value, using the Franchise Factor, to its Price-to-Earnings ratio as one model of performance. Using the firms in the S&P 1,500 as the data sample, this study also examines the effects of market value along with the franchise value to price-to-earnings ratio. The results show that the franchise value to price-to-earnings ratio, even when controlling for the firm’s market value, was in fact predictive of individual companies’ stock returns between 2000 and 2009.

Determinants Of The Success Of Active Vs. Passive Investment Strategy, Richa Birla

Business/Business Administration

This study documents the monthly performance of active versus passive investing over the last 25 years. It also identifies several variables that are closely related to the current and next month’s success of one over the other. Three useful factors identified include the Fed funds rate, the VIX volatility index, and Russell Investments’ CrossVolTM index. All three are valuable in explaining and predicting the success of active management to certain extent.

Robust And Economical Autonomous Navigation Via Advanced Bayesian Methods, Ali H. Chaudry May 2012

Robust And Economical Autonomous Navigation Via Advanced Bayesian Methods, Ali H. Chaudry

Physics

A 2009 NASA SBIR grant awarded to Autonomous Exploration, Inc., was partially used to fund students at the University at Albany to help research whether autonomous navigation systems can be prepared at a much lower cost than is currently being done. Expensive and bulky sensors (the basis of current-generation navigation systems) can be avoided by using commercially available low-cost sensors; the disadvantages of these low-cost sensors can be eluded by using novel data-processing techniques such as Bayesian analysis. Integration of these methods can lead to low-cost navigation systems, and hence, rovers. Potential applications include extra-planetary surface exploration as well as …

Techniques For Improving Parameter Estimation In Esr, Troy R. Broderick May 2012

Techniques For Improving Parameter Estimation In Esr, Troy R. Broderick

Physics

This paper is to address the need for better estimates of the ESR spectral parameters of biological systems. In this paper I focus on models of spectral lineshapes and will be applying these techniques to more complicated lineshapes. Multifrequency ESR is a powerful technique for identifying and characterizing dynamic modes in natively unfolded biopolymers in general and loop regions in particular. I will introduce the reader to properties of ESR, formalisms and common techniques in the field. A common result for a simple ESR line is a Lorentzian distribution that is characterized by a mode and width. Information about the …

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

After a crushing defeat in the Franco-Prussian War, the first durable manifestation of the principles of the 1789 French Revolution arose from the ashes of the defeated authoritarian Second Empire. The Third Republic is still today the longest-lasting regime in France after the fall of the Ancien Régime. However, the Third Republic is infamous for its inability to adjust to the devastating effects of World War One, the economic crisis during the Great Depression and the ideological polarization between Fascism and Communism. One of the main weaknesses of the regime is found in its ministerial instability. For example, between May …
