Deglacial Radiocarbon Chronology Of The Western Ross Sea From Relative Sea-Level Curves, George H. Denton, Brenda Hall Nov 1998

Deglacial Radiocarbon Chronology Of The Western Ross Sea From Relative Sea-Level Curves, George H. Denton, Brenda Hall

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

This award provides support for one year of funding to perform carbon-14 analyses on samples (seal skin and Adamussium colbecki shells) collected in firm stratigraphic position within numerous raised beaches along the Scott Coast of the western Ross Sea, Antarctica. These measurements will enable the development of a radiocarbon chronology and will result in detailed relative sea- level curves for five separate localities along the Scott Coast. These relative sea-level curves will help to constrain the timing of deglaciation in the western Ross Sea. During the last glaciation, West Antarctic ice expanded into the Ross Sea, merged with East Antarctic …

Soluble Species In Aerosol And Snow And Their Relationship At Glacier 1, Tien Shan, China, Junying Sun, Dahe Qin, Paul Andrew Mayewski, Jack E. Dibb, Sallie Whitlow, Zhongqin Li, Qinzhao Yang

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Simultaneous sampling of aerosol (n = 20) and snow (n = 114) was made at Glacier 1, Tien Shan, between May 19 and June 29, 1996. Similar temporal patterns of some major ion (calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, chloride, and sulfate) concentrations between snow and aerosol show that snow chemistry basically reflects changes in the chemistry of the atmosphere. This gives us confidence in the reconstruction of past atmospheric change using some snow data. There are no significant correlations between aerosol and snow samples for ammonium and nitrate. This suggests that postdepositional and/or postcollection processes may alter ammonium and …

Study Looks At Maine Principals' Experiences With Challenging Behaviors In Schools, Kay Hyatt

General University of Maine Publications

Maine schools are encountering a variety of challenging behaviors by students and are using a number of strategies to address the problems, according to a study tapping the experiences of 33 elementary and high school principals. While the interventions are effective with most students, the serious needs and behaviors of a small group far exceed schools' ability and resources, according to researchers at the University of Maine's College of Education and Human Development.

Comfort And Calories Add Up During The Holidays, Kay Hyatt

General University of Maine Publications

Ever wonder how the terms "little old ladies" and "little old men" became so common and endearing? The answer is a good lesson to recall before you dig into the dip or reach for that second piece of pie during the food-centered holidays, according to a University of Maine fitness expert. These smaller, more active folks are still around because they have outlived their overweight, sedentary peers.

A Symposium On 'Controls On Soil Resoration: Implications For Climate Change'; October 27-28, 1997; Anaheim, Ca, Lindsey E. Rustad

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

The potential disruption of global C cycles by human activity in both developed and developing counties is one of the key environmental issues facing human populations as we move into the 21st century. Deforestation of tropical rainforests, changes in land-use, and continued burning of fossil fuels have resulted in an unprecedented increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations over the last half century. This has raised concerns about potential global warming and climate change, and consequences for further disruptions of the global C cycle. Soil respiration, which represents the combined respiration of roots and soil micro- and macro- biota, represents one of …

An Intelligent Reactive Controller For Ocean Science Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, Roy M. Turner Oct 1998

An Intelligent Reactive Controller For Ocean Science Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, Roy M. Turner

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

Most of the research activities performed during this grant period had to do with designing and implementing the Orca intelligent autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) controller. This entailed a requirements analysis early in the project, followed by the design and implementation of the program. The latter two activities were interleaved; Orca was designed and implemented in a phased manner, with each new version of the program having more functionality.
