Compensation Policy And Organizational Performance: The Efficiency, Operational, And Financial Implications Of Pay Levels And Pay Structure, Mark P. Brown, Michael C. Sturman, Marcia J. Simmering
Compensation Policy And Organizational Performance: The Efficiency, Operational, And Financial Implications Of Pay Levels And Pay Structure, Mark P. Brown, Michael C. Sturman, Marcia J. Simmering
Michael C. Sturman
In this study, we investigated the relationship between organization-level compensation decisions and organizational performance. Specifically, we examined how companies' pay structures and pay levels relate to resource efficiency, patient care outcomes, and financial performance. We expected both nonlinear and interactive effects. Results from a large database of hospitals support our predictions. We discuss the implications for practice and compensation research theory development in light of the study's results.

Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is a mouse model of multiple sclerosis characterized by infiltration of activated CD4(+) T lymphocytes into tissues of the CNS. This study investigated the role of CD43 in the induction and progression of EAE. Results demonstrate that CD43-deficient mice have reduced and delayed clinical and histological disease severity relative to CD43(+/+) mice. This reduction was characterized by decreased CD4(+) T cell infiltration of the CNS of CD43(-/-) mice but similar numbers of Ag-specific T cells in the periphery, suggesting a defect in T cell trafficking to the CNS. The absence of CD43 also affected cytokine production, …

The Argus Digital Collection: A Digital Archive For Access And Preservation, Fredrick Miller
Fred Miller
The Argus Digital Collection is Illinois Wesleyan University’s first digital library project. This project began as an archival and preservation project, and presented management and technical challenges for the University’s library and central Information Technology organizations. This paper reviews how the project came to be, project hurdles, lessons learned, and where we go from here. Academic institutions contemplating similar digital archive projects can benefit from Illinois Wesleyan University’s experience with the Argus Digital Collection.

Bifurcations And Patterns In Compromise Processes, E. Ben-Naim, P. L. Krapivsky, S. Redner
Eli Ben-Naim
We study an opinion dynamics model in which agents reach compromise via pairwise interactions. When the opinions of two agents are sufficiently close, they both acquire the average of their initial opinions; otherwise, they do not interact. Generically, the system reaches a steady state with a finite number of isolated, noninteracting opinion clusters (``parties''). As the initial opinion range increases, the number of such parties undergoes a periodic sequence of bifurcations. Both major and minor parties emerge, and these are organized in alternating pattern. This behavior is illuminated by considering discrete opinion states.

Stakeholding - A New Paradigm In Social Policy, Keith Dowding, Jurgen De Wispelaere, Stuart White
Jurgen De Wispelaere
This introduction to a recent collection of papers on "The Ethics of Stakeholding" charts the development of recent debates on universal welfare, with specific reference to basic income and stakeholder grants. The chapter offers a brief historical background to the current debate before outlining the main arguments put forward in favour of stakeholder policies as well as the key areas in which they remain challenged.

Optimal Fiscal Policy In An Economy Facing Socio-Political Instability, Chetan Ghate, Quan Vu Le, Paul J. Zak
Chetan Ghate
The paper presents a model of optimal government policy when policy choices may exacerbate sociopolitical instability (SPI). The authors show that optimal policy that takes into account SPI transforms a standard concave growth model into a model with both a poverty trap and endogenous growth. The resulting equilibrium dynamics inherit the properties of government policies and need not be monotone. Indeed, for a broad set of conditions, government policy is unable to eliminate the poverty trap; when these conditions do not hold, “most” countries eventually reach a balanced growth path. The predictions of the model are tested by developing three …

A Bibliographical Guide To Nineteenth-Century British Journal Publications On Greece, Kyriakos N. Demetriou
A Bibliographical Guide To Nineteenth-Century British Journal Publications On Greece, Kyriakos N. Demetriou
Kyriakos N. Demetriou
The first idea for this guide sprung from an investigation into the reception of modern Greece by Victorian classical scholars, i.e., their understanding, first, of the political affairs relating to the Revolution of 1821, and, second, of the major constitutional, civil, and cultural changes that took place during the nineteenth century. Examining the lists of contents of the numerous monthly Victorian periodicals soon led to the realization that there existed a remarkable record of review articles and contributions on Greece with a full range of opinion on major contemporary issues, such as politics, education, travel, religion, culture, and historiography. The …

This article discusses some of the institutional formats utilized by the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1985) in order to regulate the influence of large commercial interest groups on economic policy. It focuses particularly on the conflicts between the directors of the dominant social class groups and high-level state bureaucratic leaders on decisory priorities in the context of the politics of redemocratização during the Figueiredo government (1979-1985).

The paper presents the changes that have occurred in December 2002 in the Polish reference modeling methodology (based on the stationary Gaussian atmospheric dispersion model) used for the air quality impact assessment in Poland since the 60s of the 20th century. Discusses the changes that have occurred in the preparation of data for the simulation, the procedure used in shortened and full range of calculation, the algorithms of initial computations and the results of calculations.
English Title: Changes in the methodology of modeling the pollutant dispersion in the air based on the Gaussian model.

Background: Recently, researchers have been using mass spectroscopy to study cancer. For use of proteomics spectra in a clinical setting, stringent quality-control procedures will be needed.
Methods: We pooled samples of nipple aspirate fluid from healthy breasts and breasts with cancer to prepare a control sample. Aliquots of the control sample were used on two spots on each of three IMAC ProteinChip® arrays (Ciphergen Biosystems, Inc.) on 4 successive days to generate 24 SELDI spectra. In 36 subsequent experiments, the control sample was applied to two spots of each ProteinChip array, and the resulting spectra were analyzed to determine how …

The Political Power Of The Retirees In A Two-Dimensional Voting Model, Georges Casamatta
The Political Power Of The Retirees In A Two-Dimensional Voting Model, Georges Casamatta
Georges Casamatta
We show that the retirees are able to obtain favorable pension policies whereas they belong to a minority in the population. The argument relies on the multidimensional nature of the political process. We consider a two-dimensional collective choice problem. The first of these choices is the level of the contribution rate to the Pay-As-You- Gopension system. The second is a noneconomic decision, unrelated to the pension system. Using a political agency model, we show that, as soon as the retirees are sufficiently numerous, the equilibrium tax rate may be higher than the tax rate preferred by the young, who yet …

Imputation Of Missing Longitudinal Data: A Comparison Of Methods, Paula Diehr, Jean Mundahl Engels
Paula Diehr
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Missing information is inevitable in longitudinal studies, and can result in biased estimates and a loss of power. One approach to this problem is to impute the missing data to yield a more complete data set. Our goal was to compare the performance of 14 methods of imputing missing data on depression, weight, cognitive functioning, and self-rated health in a longitudinal cohort of older adults. METHODS: We identified situations where a person had a known value following one or more missing values, and treated the known value as a "missing value." This "missing value" was imputed using …
