Caring About Aftercare: Thesis Presentation Of Initial Findings, Sage B. Fuentes Nov 2019

Caring About Aftercare: Thesis Presentation Of Initial Findings, Sage B. Fuentes

University Honors Theses

While previous research has studied the impact of stigma and non-normative play within the BDSM and kink community, previous psychological research involving BDSM practitioners has not investigated the cultural practice of aftercare that tends to follow the highly sensationalized acts within the culture. The current study examines this cultural practice by giving a series of semi-structured interviews to assess the importance of aftercare and how it impacts negotiations and play. BDSM practitioners (n = 11) participated in audio recorded interviews regarding questions on identity, kink, aftercare, consent, and negotiation. 72.73% of individuals rated aftercare as mostly to largely important in …

Art Therapy And Dialectical Behavioral Therapy: A Workbook, Jasmine S. Griswold Nov 2019

Art Therapy And Dialectical Behavioral Therapy: A Workbook, Jasmine S. Griswold

University Honors Theses

Looking into the ways in which we treat anxiety and depression in both clinical and casual settings it seemed apparent that there are similar tools being utilized to alleviate the effects, but there didn’t seem to be a cohesion of these tools. With Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) a mindfulness based approach to therapy and the use of art as a tool to create dialogue in Art Therapy (AT) it seemed appropriate to combine the modalities to create a workbook that could be used on one's own or in conjunction with a therapist.

Collaborative Features Of Graphic Narratives: Research For "Lovely, Satisfied, Indifferent Eyes", Brigid K. Fitzpatrick Nov 2019

Collaborative Features Of Graphic Narratives: Research For "Lovely, Satisfied, Indifferent Eyes", Brigid K. Fitzpatrick

University Honors Theses

Graphic narratives, such as comics and graphic novels, innately include formal features that invite reader participation. Reading a graphic narrative means contributing to the work. I created a graphic novelette, Lovely, Satisfied, Indifferent Eyes, that prioritizes the conceptual collaboration between author and reader. I did this by enhancing the formal features of the gutter, visual voice, braiding, and temporal representation (time). Creating a graphic narrative that relies on reader participation allows the author and the work to benefit from the vast networks of diverse readers, made possible by the internet and the increased communication in our world as a …

Superhydrophobic Particle Ejections From Liquid Surfaces In Microgravity Environments, Elaina L. Gabriel Nov 2019

Superhydrophobic Particle Ejections From Liquid Surfaces In Microgravity Environments, Elaina L. Gabriel

University Honors Theses

This paper explores a completely new avenue of microgravity fluidics that has not been systematically studied before, exploring superhydrophobic particle ejections from liquid surfaces in microgravity environments and quantifying the particle velocity varying particle. Superhydrophobic surfaces greatly reduce liquid-substrate contact. This allows for spontaneous ejection of floating particles in drop tower experiments. To quantify such phenomena, a drop tower experiment is constructed and tested. The Dryden Tower (DDT) is a laboratory facility at Portland State University that allows for the investigation of short duration exploration and research on Earth of 'micro-gravity' phenomena similar to that aboard orbiting spacecraft. Perhaps surprisingly, …

Erotic Manga, Its Artists, And The Pressures Of Censorship, Dominique Andrée Lief

University Honors Theses

Erotic manga (エロマンガ), a genre of adult-oriented Japanese comics is subjected to censorship that may seem irrelevant or confusing to people outside of the industry. Why is erotic manga censored? How is erotic manga censored? How does censorship affect erotic manga artists? These questions are examined through use of English academic sources, Japanese academic sources and news articles, and interviews with professional erotic manga artists translated into English.

Support From Inside Out: Exploring Whether Various Social Supports Assist In Reducing Prison Rule Violations, Sarah Renee Lazzari Nov 2019

Support From Inside Out: Exploring Whether Various Social Supports Assist In Reducing Prison Rule Violations, Sarah Renee Lazzari

Dissertations and Theses

Scholars argue that prison rule violations are a way to assess whether individuals are engaging in prosocial behaviors. Individuals who engage in prosocial behaviors, during periods of incarceration, are less likely to engage in behaviors that result in official rule violations. Decreasing rule violations is one way to work towards a safer prison environment, while also preparing individuals for release. The current study uses cross-sectional data form the 2004 Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Facilities, in order to examine whether multiple types of prisons programs, which will be framed as various types of social supports, influence the frequency …

Attrition And Psychotherapy, Jesse Barrington Homan Nov 2019

Attrition And Psychotherapy, Jesse Barrington Homan

Dissertations and Theses

Attrition in psychotherapy, also known as dropout, is a problem that affects clients who terminate, their families, therapists, mental health systems, and the overall community. Research on attrition is vast. However, the majority of this research has been done post hoc, relied on quantitative methods, and looked primarily at client demographic variables as the predictors of attrition. This has resulted in inconsistent findings, offers little to no useful information about attrition, and appears to blame clients for failed therapy. There has been little research on attrition from the perspective of clients who terminate. This study was designed to answer the …

The Death Of Physical Media: The Dangers Of Streaming And The End Of The Home Library, Amelia Eichler Nov 2019

The Death Of Physical Media: The Dangers Of Streaming And The End Of The Home Library, Amelia Eichler

University Honors Theses

This thesis aims to provide an extensive look at the history of collecting film within the home, starting from pre-cinematic optical toys to today's use of streaming platforms. There is an extensive knowledge gap in the history of film collecting. Much of the information is anecdotal and providing an extensive background will close this gap. Contrasting the different technologies in the home allows for people to see how film collecting practices have evolved. Streaming is currently a new phenomena that has taken over the industry and changed the structure of the home library. Rather than aid the home library, this …

University Honors Theses

Both Zalophus californianus and Eumetopias jubatus are species known to travel upriver into the Columbia River, reaching as far as the Bonneville Lock and Dam. Bonneville Dam works with federal agencies to hatch and protect salmonids within the Columbia River. Pinnipeds at the dam have been studied since the 1980's in an effort to understand their behaviors and feeding patterns on endangered salmon species. Since 2006, the hazing of Z. californianus and E. jubatus has gone on, showing little effectiveness in lowering the sea lion's consumption rates (ranging from 0.4-5.8% annually). Behavioral analyses conducted during the spring salmon run of …

Critique Of European Union Intervention In Mediterranean Migration: An Examination Of How Territory Can Be Used To Understand Migration Phenomena, Erin B. Bangs Nov 2019

Critique Of European Union Intervention In Mediterranean Migration: An Examination Of How Territory Can Be Used To Understand Migration Phenomena, Erin B. Bangs

University Honors Theses

Migration has existed virtually as long as humans have. Migration as a social phenomenon is nothing new, however, the way migration and migrants themselves have come to be treated in the legal and political sphere has evolved over time. Today, a decent majority of democratic state governments view and respond negatively to migrants attempting to enter their borders. This is painfully obvious in the case of Mediterranean migration, primarily from Africa to Europe by way of the Mediterranean Sea. What is happening in the Mediterranean is a humanitarian crisis. This work critiques the intervention of the European Union in the …

Due to the novelty of this field, relatively little is known about these products. In this work, the identification and quantification of inhalation toxicants such as formaldehyde, acrolein, acetaldehyde and dihydroxyacetone are reported. Results of the investigation of the ability …

Spontaneous Recombination Of Short Rnas To Increase Length And Complexity In Prebiotically Plausible Conditions, Benedict Arthur Smail Nov 2019

Spontaneous Recombination Of Short Rnas To Increase Length And Complexity In Prebiotically Plausible Conditions, Benedict Arthur Smail

Dissertations and Theses

The RNA World hypothesis is an influential theory of how life arose on earth which posits that the earliest life forms carried out essential activities with RNA catalysts instead of proteins. Substantial evidence to support this theory comes from among others, the fact that the ribosome is a ribozyme, the existence of small RNA catalysts capable of high activity, and self-assembling ribozymes such as the Azoarcus ribozyme. Additional support has been provided by the directed evolution of various ribozymes and the reputed prebiotic synthesis of nucleotides and small RNA oligomers. However, it has long been challenging to show how long …

Noncompliance With Land Acquisition In Vietnam: A Policy Tools Approach, Dang Van Nguyen Oct 2019

Noncompliance With Land Acquisition In Vietnam: A Policy Tools Approach, Dang Van Nguyen

Dissertations and Theses

The Doi Moi policy (economic reform) launched in 1986 has resulted in economic boom for Vietnam. The nation with a population of around 95 million people recently joined the middle-income nation group and became a "major development success story." In the land sector, while the land ownership is controlled by the State, the privatization process of land rights has brought Vietnamese people five fundamental rights over land. To meet increasing demands of economic development and urban expansion, the central government of Vietnam (CGV) has implemented land-taking policy from early 1990s. The land acquisition policy, on the one hand, has attracted …

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is about the colonization of the West, with an emphasis on the Pacific Northwest from 1853 to 1895. It analyzes the historical processes occurring as America expanded westward through the lens of the Kautz family. August Kautz and his wives tell the story of colonization through unique and vastly different ways. This thesis argues that a microanalysis of the Kautz family history tells a greater story of colonization, one rife with complicated layers influenced by race, class, and societal expectations that shaped individual roles within colonization.

August Kautz was a lieutenant when he first arrived in the Pacific …

Dissertations and Theses

The Nature of Science (NOS) and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) have commonalities in the knowledge bases: they are both ways of explaining the natural world; founded on a set of practices and the historical accumulation of knowledge; and part of the education is learning practices and developing knowledge of the concepts that are foundational to the disciplines. Throughout the United States, schools are attempting to strengthen students' understanding of NOS through various approaches, although few have adopted the integration of TEK into curriculum. This research assesses two summer camps for middle school students that are science focused, one with TEK …

Impact Of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles On Nutrient And Contaminant Reduction In Wastewater Treatment Wetlands, Madeline Hubbard Oct 2019

Impact Of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles On Nutrient And Contaminant Reduction In Wastewater Treatment Wetlands, Madeline Hubbard

Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports

Metallic nanoparticles are found in a variety of commercial products and industrial processes, and have become more common in the last few decades. As nanoparticles are toxic to biota and have the potential to spread other types of contamination, their increased use has become a concern. Research into the transport of nanoparticles in subsurface and surface waters shows a wide range in mobility, but that they are most likely to collect in systems with low linear velocities and high organic content. As a result, wetlands are the most vulnerable to nanoparticle contamination. Wetlands receiving and treating wastewater effluent have an …

Urbanicity As A Moderator Of The Relationship Between Stigma And Well-Being Outcomes For Individuals With Serious Mental Illnesses, Emily Leickly

Dissertations and Theses

During the deinstitutionalization movement in the 1960s, community mental health centers and supportive and affordable housing for people with serious mental illnesses (SMI) was concentrated in economically disadvantaged urban centers. Today, these urban centers are becoming increasingly gentrified and unaffordable for people with SMI. Affordability is no longer synonymous with urban living, and supportive housing for people with SMI is increasingly found in non-urban areas. Given this shift, it is important to understand the potential impacts of non-urban living on people with SMI. Non-urban environments provide potential benefits for the general population, including reduced traffic and increased proximity to the …
