Quiet Time Variability Of The Geosynchronous Magnetic Field And Its Response To The Solar Wind, Jeff Sanny, J. A. Tapia, D. G. Sibeck, M. B. Moldwin Dec 2002

Quiet Time Variability Of The Geosynchronous Magnetic Field And Its Response To The Solar Wind, Jeff Sanny, J. A. Tapia, D. G. Sibeck, M. B. Moldwin

Physics Faculty Works

We present a survey of the variability of the geosynchronous magnetic field strength on the dayside using observations by the GOES satellites over a period exceeding 4 years. Only intervals of reduced geomagnetic activity, as defined by Dst > −20 nT, were considered in this study. The magnetic field strength data were filtered with a passband of 1.7 mHz to 17 mHz (1–10 minutes), a process that eliminates the diurnal variation of the field strength and the effects of most of the higher frequency (>17 mHz) ultralow-frequency (ULF) waves. The geosynchronous field strength appears to exhibit the greatest variability in …

Teachers For Whom? A Study Of Teacher Education Practices In Higher Education, John L. Watzke

Journal of Catholic Education

This article presents the results of a study of teacher education practices at 80 Catholic colleges and universities. The impetus for this work was the many Church documents in support of Catholic schools and the cooperative work of diocesan superintendents and educational leaders in the matter of teacher education. The goal of the study was to investigate questions fundamental to the role of Catholic higher education in the preparation of teachers: From where will the next generation of teachers to serve Catholic schools come? How does the preparation of teachers in Catholic institutions of higher education relate to the unique …

All stakeholders “held the same stake,” agreeing on the curriculum, instruction, and operation of the Border Catholic Schools. Part one of this study was published as “Border Catholic Schools: Unique Stakeholder Alliances (Part 1)” (Watt, 2002) …

Spirituality And Leadership Effectiveness: Historical And Philosophical Trends, Christy L. Magnusen Dec 2002

Spirituality And Leadership Effectiveness: Historical And Philosophical Trends, Christy L. Magnusen

Journal of Catholic Education

Leaders have assumed their positions of power in a variety of ways: through election, designation, inheritance, and coincidental timing or stealth. Regardless of the means of ascent into power, a leader’s endorsement is well regarded. The research findings of Covey (1989), Bennis (1989), Greenleaf (1973), Deming (1986), Drucker (1996), Bolman and Deal (1991), Fox (1995), and others support a strong correlation between leadership and the success or failure of a community, business, or organization. Hence, because these two elements appear to be inextricably tied to one another, it is paramount to the group’s welfare that the leader be one who …

Ex Corde Ecclesiae, Culture And The Catholic University, Mario O. D’Souza

Journal of Catholic Education

Catholic institutions of higher education continue to wrestle with the demands of John Paul II’s Apostolic Constitution, Ex Corde Ecclesiae. This article looks beyond the juridical aspects of implementation and focuses on culture as a way to explore the contribution of Catholic colleges and universities to the broader life of the Church and to the wider academy. Popular culture, with its dependence on visual imagery and entertainment, creates a particular challenge for advancing the unique mission and identity of Catholic institutions.

Helping Graduate Level Administrative Courses Support The Importance Of The School Asset, John C. Maciha

Journal of Catholic Education

Facilities management, preventative maintenance, and capital improvements are the concern of many principals, presidents, and boards. University preparation programs for school administrators often lack serious concentration on these areas, mostly due to the increased standards for licensure, certification, and academic degrees. This article attempts to fill that void by inviting school leaders to consider preventative maintenance as an integral part of facilities management.

The Role Of Bishop In Transforming The Church And The World: Two National Perspectives, George Bunz Dec 2002

The Role Of Bishop In Transforming The Church And The World: Two National Perspectives, George Bunz

Journal of Catholic Education

Are there differences in how Canadian and United States bishops understand the pre-and post-Vatican II Church, its salvific purpose, unity, authority, collegiality, equality, empowerment, the role of women, and the bishop’s role in transforming the Church and the world? Data originally collected from interviews with five Canadian and seven United States bishops as part of a study (Bunz, 1994) investigating the role of bishop were reassessed to examine this question. Differences and similarities in how Canadian and United States bishops perceived the challenges facing the Church were discerned. It is suggested that cultural variation may account for the different perceptions …

Examination Of The Consultation And Development Process For The Scottish Catholic Religious Education Guidelines, Roisin Coll

Journal of Catholic Education

This paper examines the construction of the Religious and Moral Education 5-14 Draft Guidelines in Scotland and the Catholic Church’s response to these guidelines. The content and background of this document are explored by examining the process followed by the Review and Development Group for religious education. The reasons for the rejection of this document and the process by which a new document was created are also investigated. Particular attention is paid to the roles played in this process by the laity and the clergy within the Catholic Church through an examination of the perceptions held by individuals involved in …

Catholic Education As A Societal Institution, Maureen T. Hallinan Sep 2002

Catholic Education As A Societal Institution, Maureen T. Hallinan

Journal of Catholic Education

This paper conceptualizes Catholic education as a societal institution interdependent with other major social institutions in the country. A brief history of the American Catholic system demonstrates how its origin and growth were influenced by and affected the cultural, political, religious, and economic milieu in which it was embedded. In particular, the development of Catholic education interacted with the growth of the public schools system. Comparisons of contemporary Catholic and public schools illustrate this interdependency while underscoring the uniqueness and contributions of Catholic education. A sociological understanding of Catholic education as a societal entity should inform decisions about the future …

Border Catholic Schools: Unique Stakeholder Alliances (Part I), Karen M. Watt Sep 2002

Border Catholic Schools: Unique Stakeholder Alliances (Part I), Karen M. Watt

Journal of Catholic Education

This article, the first of a two-part series, presents an analysis of data extracted from the dissertation The Impact of Catholic Schooling on Low-Income Mexican-American Students (Watt, 1999). The research was prompted by the author’s interest in The Coleman Report of 1966, a controversial document that claimed multiply-disadvantaged minority Catholic school students outperformed their public school counterparts. This study was qualitative in nature, exploring four case studies of 3rd-grade teachers, their schools, and their classrooms in a Hispanic cultural context. Findings will be presented in Part II.

What Does It Mean To Be Human? Education For World Citizenship, Alan T. Wood Sep 2002

What Does It Mean To Be Human? Education For World Citizenship, Alan T. Wood

Journal of Catholic Education

What is the purpose of education in a democracy? What is the meaning of freedom? These questions are explored in depth in this essay as the author attempts to expand the conversation between private and public education. Without reference to religious purposes or Gospel mandates, the article explores possible responses to ultimate questions of meaning by mining language, history, biology, and technology for answers.
