Symptoms Of Autism In Children Referred For Early Intervention: Implications For Theory, Diagnosis, And Research, Lisa Daniell Wiggins
Symptoms Of Autism In Children Referred For Early Intervention: Implications For Theory, Diagnosis, And Research, Lisa Daniell Wiggins
Psychology Theses
Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders that affect social, communication, and behavioral development. Social impairments have been implicated as primary symptoms of ASD and communication impairments are often cited as initial concerns among parents. Yet there is an inconsistency in the literature regarding the existence of restricted interests and repetitive behaviors (RR) in very young children (i.e., those younger than 4 years) with ASD and the association between RR and sensory dysfunction. The purpose of the current project was to identify social deficits that most distinguish very young children with ASD, assess whether RR are present in very young …
Self-Esteem, Family Support, Peer Support, And Depressive Symptomatology: A Correlational Descriptive Study Of Pregnant Adolescents, Janice Gunter Harris
Self-Esteem, Family Support, Peer Support, And Depressive Symptomatology: A Correlational Descriptive Study Of Pregnant Adolescents, Janice Gunter Harris
Nursing Dissertations (PhD)
Although there is a growing body of research in the area of adolescent pregnancy and parenting, relatively little research has addressed the psychological effects of pregnancy on the adolescent. A descriptive correlational study was utilized to examine levels of depressive symptomatology, self-esteem, perceived social support from family and friends, and the relationship among these variables in the pregnant adolescent. A second purpose of the study was to describe characteristics of the pregnant adolescent (age, race or ethnicity and educational level). The theoretical framework for this study was derived from The Conceptual Model of Support During Adolescent Pregnancy. Participants for the …
The Impact Of Depressive Personality Disorder On Treatment Outcome For Chronic Depression, Rachel Elizabeth Maddux
The Impact Of Depressive Personality Disorder On Treatment Outcome For Chronic Depression, Rachel Elizabeth Maddux
Psychology Theses
Our conceptualization and empirical understanding of the course of depression is beginning to change. This is largely a result of recent epidemiological and clinical data that suggest depression has a chronic course for many individuals. Treatment studies for chronic depression have found that response rates are consistently less robust than in studies of acute, episodic depression. As is such, investigators have begun to examine factors that impede treatment response among these patients. One such factor is the presence of comorbid Axis-II personality disorders. This study examined the moderating effects of Depressive Personality Disorder (DPD) on treatment outcome among 680 outpatients …
Analysis Of Resource-Sharing Decisions In Dyadic Collaborative Knowledge Creation: A Game-Theoretic Approach, Savitha Namuduri
Analysis Of Resource-Sharing Decisions In Dyadic Collaborative Knowledge Creation: A Game-Theoretic Approach, Savitha Namuduri
Managerial Sciences Dissertations
Knowledge is an asset that can give an organization competitive edge. However, knowledge creation is an expensive activity. One of the reasons organizations form knowledge creation collaborations is to share resources that are needed to create knowledge. This dissertation models the dyadic collaborations as games between the partners and arrives at resource-sharing schemes for them. Specifically, the collaborations are modeled as two games- Stackelberg Leader-Follower game and Partnership game. The types of collaborations are distinguished based on the nature of the marginal return functions with respect to knowledge creation investments for each of the collaborating organizations. Three essays are presented …
Alternative Realities/The Multiverse: A Metaphysical Conundrum, Freda A. Wynn
Alternative Realities/The Multiverse: A Metaphysical Conundrum, Freda A. Wynn
Communication Theses
Films of every era reflect the concerns and fears of Western society. The acceleration of technology, the loss of a concrete world, the uneasy relationship with humans and ever increasing complex machines are inducing a fear of losing the ability to discern reality. The reality of ideas from science and the world around are woven into the narratives that we use to explain life. The films we watch reflect our hopes and fears and as the fears increase so do films with a shared theme of alternative realities. To know reality and search for the true Self is the job of …
Rational Realizations Of The Minimum Rank Of A Sign Pattern Matrix, Selcuk Koyuncu
Rational Realizations Of The Minimum Rank Of A Sign Pattern Matrix, Selcuk Koyuncu
Mathematics Theses
A sign pattern matrix is a matrix whose entries are from the set {+,-,0}. The minimum rank of a sign pattern matrix A is the minimum of the rank of the real matrices whose entries have signs equal to the corresponding entries of A. It is conjectured that the minimum rank of every sign pattern matrix can be realized by a rational matrix. The equivalence of this conjecture to several seemingly unrelated statements are established. For some special cases, such as when A is entrywise nonzero, or the minimum rank of A is at most 2, or the minimum rank …
Implications Of Late Pleistocene Climatic Change On The Morphological Variations Of The Neanderthal, Dawn Marie Bradley
Implications Of Late Pleistocene Climatic Change On The Morphological Variations Of The Neanderthal, Dawn Marie Bradley
Geosciences Theses
In this research, the relationship of climatic changes between 130k to 28k years BP to concurrent morphological variations in Neanderthals was tested. Traditional anthropological studies attribute robust Neanderthal morphological traits as an adaptation to a cold environment. A database of previously completed terrestrial paleoclimatic reconstructions in Europe and the Mediterranean was compiled and used to create a series of GIS-generated timeslice maps. Regional climatic conditions were then related to changes in Neanderthal appearances, morphology and disappearances as evident in the archaeological record. To establish climatic conditions, existing studies were compiled from two regions: Europe and the Mediterranean. The European data …
Reclaiming The Human Self: Redemptive Suffering And Spiritual Service In The Works Of James Baldwin, Francine Larue Allen
Reclaiming The Human Self: Redemptive Suffering And Spiritual Service In The Works Of James Baldwin, Francine Larue Allen
English Dissertations
James Arthur Baldwin argues that the issue of humanity—what it means to be human and whether or not all people bear the same measure of human worth—supersedes all issues, including socially popular ones such as race and religion. As a former child preacher, Baldwin claims, like others shaped by both the African-American faith tradition and Judeo-Christianity, that human equality stands as a divinely mandated and philosophically sound concept. As a literary artist and social commentator, Baldwin argues that truth in any narrative text, whether fictional or non-fictional, lies in its embrace or rejection of human equality. Truth-telling narrative texts uphold …

"I Know What You Are Going Through": The Impact Of Negotiating The Criminal Justice System On The Well Being Of Family Members Of Homicide Victims And Criminal Offenders., Cara-Vanessa Hadassah Bertollini
Sociology Theses
Increasingly individuals are coming into contact with the criminal justice system. For millions of Americans this contact is mediated by the victimization or offense of a loved one. This study focused on exploring what the family members of victims and offenders identify as their needs and concerns in relation to the criminal justice system, assessing if the system is effective in addressing these needs and concerns, and understanding how these families' lives are shaped by interaction with the system. Grounded theory method was used to analyze the narratives posted on two on-line message boards, one for victims' families and one …
Defining Goan Identity, Donna J. Young
Defining Goan Identity, Donna J. Young
History Theses
This is an analysis of Goan identity issues in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries using unconventional sources such as novels, short stories, plays, pamphlets, periodical articles, and internet newspapers. The importance of using literature in this analysis is to present how Goans perceive themselves rather than how the government, the tourist industry, or tourists perceive them. Also included is a discussion of post-colonial issues and how they define Goan identity. Chapters include “Goan Identity: A Concept in Transition,” “Goan Identity: Defined by Language,” and “Goan Identity: The Ancestral Home and Expatriates.” The conclusion is that by making Konkani the official state …
Alice Hamilton: The Making Of A Feminist-Pragmatist Rhetor, Vicki J. Mccoy
Alice Hamilton: The Making Of A Feminist-Pragmatist Rhetor, Vicki J. Mccoy
Communication Theses
ABSTRACT Dr. Alice Hamilton (1869-1970), the leading American figure in industrial medicine during the early to mid-1900s, left behind a body of rhetoric that is important in the history of American feminist discourse and American public address. Her discourse is the exemplary of feminist-pragmatist rhetoric, a genre of cross-gender communication developed by New Women associated with Hull House and the University of Chicago between 1892 and 1918. Hamilton’s rhetoric illuminates a key event in the history of the American rhetorical tradition—the emergence of the modern woman from her late-Victorian beginnings through her Progressive self-transformation. This study is approached as a …
Tabloidization In The Modern American Press: A Textual Analysis And Assessment Of Newspaper And Tabloid Coverage Of The “Runaway Bride” Case, Nichola Reneé Harris
Tabloidization In The Modern American Press: A Textual Analysis And Assessment Of Newspaper And Tabloid Coverage Of The “Runaway Bride” Case, Nichola Reneé Harris
Communication Theses
The media have extensive power in that they represent the primary, and often the only, source of information about many important events and topics. Media can define which events are important, as well as how media consumers should understand these events. The current trend towards tabloidization, or sensationalism, in today’s American media, has caused an uproar among media traditionalists, primarily in the fields of news and print media. This study seeks to examine the actual influence of tabloidization in newspaper media. My primary research question is as follows: Do tabloid newspapers in the United States set the agenda for more …
Age And Sex Differences In The Acquisition And Maintenance Of Intravenous Amphetamine Self-Administration In Rats, Mahin Shahbazi
Age And Sex Differences In The Acquisition And Maintenance Of Intravenous Amphetamine Self-Administration In Rats, Mahin Shahbazi
Biology Theses
Drug abuse peaks during adolescence, and exposure to drugs during adolescence predicts drug abuse in adulthood. Nevertheless, adolescence is not widely studied in animal models of drug intake. Moreover, few studies have investigated sex differences in drug-reinforced behavior during adolescence. We studied age- and sex-differences in acquisition and maintenance of amphetamine self-administration in Sprague-Dawley rats. Adolescent males took more amphetamine than adult males, supporting the hypothesis that adolescents are more sensitive to amphetamine. A high rate of “inappropriate” active lever presses among periadolescent males suggests impulsive behavior. In the maintenance phase of testing, young adult males failed to work as …
The Television Portrayals Of African Americans And Racial Attitudes, Joni G V Dubriel
The Television Portrayals Of African Americans And Racial Attitudes, Joni G V Dubriel
Communication Theses
Television often portrays African Americans in unfavorable positions in comparison to Caucasians. Typically these unfavorable depictions reinforce negative stereotypes associated with African Americans. Research indicates that television portrayals can influence people’s attitudes toward one another. A question left unanswered by current research: are mass-mediated images as influential at reversing or counteracting stereotypes as they are at reinforcing them? An experiment with undergraduate students was conducted to investigate the relationship between the positive portrayal of African Americans and subsequent racial attitudes. Participants viewed a video clip with either an African American or Caucasian chairman for the Georgia Division of Public Health. …
Japanese Fathers In The United States: Negotiating Different Cultural Expectations, Yuka Abe
Japanese Fathers In The United States: Negotiating Different Cultural Expectations, Yuka Abe
Sociology Theses
Japanese fathers residing abroad have not been given much attention in Japanese scholarship. In this study, I examine how Japanese fathers in the United States negotiate between Japanese and American cultural expectations regarding fatherhood. Relying on a symbolic interactionist perspective, and through qualitative research involving in-depth interviews with 24 Japanese fathers who live in the United States for business, I focus on the men's culture, conduct, and self-identification. My interviews suggest that Japanese fathers who temporarily stay in the United States usually adhere to Japanese culture and, accordingly, live up to Japanese expectations of fatherhood. Thus, paternal modifications influenced by …
Semidefinite Programming And Stability Of Dynamical System, Kazumi Niki Stovall
Semidefinite Programming And Stability Of Dynamical System, Kazumi Niki Stovall
Mathematics Theses
In the first part of the thesis we present several interior point algorithms for solving certain positive definite programming problems. One of the algorithms is adapted for finding out whether there exists or not a positive definite matrix which is a real linear combination of some given symmetric matrices A1,A2, . . . ,Am. In the second part of the thesis we discuss stability of nonlinear dynamical systems. We search using algorithms described in the first part, for Lyapunov functions of a few forms. A suitable Lyapunov function implies the existence of a hyperellipsoidal attraction region for the dynamical system, …
Render Unto Caesar: Sovereignty, The Obligations Of Citizenship, And The Diplomatic History Of The American Civil War, Samuel David Negus
Render Unto Caesar: Sovereignty, The Obligations Of Citizenship, And The Diplomatic History Of The American Civil War, Samuel David Negus
History Theses
In scholarship on the Civil War there is generally a lack of emphasis placed upon the significance of transatlantic diplomacy. However, much of the literature that is devoted to this subject does little to draw the importance of diplomatic and domestic histories together. This thesis uses British Foreign Office papers to discuss the role of Her majesty’s consuls, and the importance of resident persons of British nativity, especially within the Confederacy, during the war. It argues that the struggle between the Union and the new Confederacy affected diplomatic relations not only in the geo-political sense, but directly and personally through …
The Past In The Present: Archaeology And Identity In A Historic African American Church, John Roby
The Past In The Present: Archaeology And Identity In A Historic African American Church, John Roby
Anthropology Theses
All across the world, people struggle daily to create and enhance their sense of identity. Such struggles are waged in many ways, including through the process of rediscovering and reinterpreting history. Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, an African American congregation in a suburb of Atlanta, is engaged in a search for its church cemetery, lost when the land was sold to the military during the nation’s mobilization for World War II. The church’s efforts are analyzed in the context of identity creation -- a search for links to a mythic and self-sufficient past. Archaeological methods reveal compelling evidence that the cemetery …
The Wisconsin Hmong Resettlement Taskforce: An Ethnographic Analysis Of Public Policy As A Cultural Process And Product, Karen Fink Devivo
The Wisconsin Hmong Resettlement Taskforce: An Ethnographic Analysis Of Public Policy As A Cultural Process And Product, Karen Fink Devivo
Anthropology Theses
This thesis focuses on the Governor of Wisconsin’s Hmong Resettlement Taskforce that was charged in 2004 with making policy recommendations for the State about a large resettlement of Hmong refugees. Through participant-observation, interviews, and document analysis, the process of policy formation by the Taskforce is examined. This empirical, ethnographic study depicts this taskforce as a group of cultural agents and its work as a cultural process. Findings in this thesis center on the taskforce report and the constraints on the narrative that limited possible recommendations.
Identity As Politics, Politics As Identity: An Anthropological Examination Of The Political Discourse On Same-Sex Marriage, Jeremy Jay Greenup
Identity As Politics, Politics As Identity: An Anthropological Examination Of The Political Discourse On Same-Sex Marriage, Jeremy Jay Greenup
Anthropology Theses
Marriage has come to be center-stage in a semiotic and ideological “culture war.” The issue of same-sex marriage has emerged as a defining political argument shaping the manner by which the contemporary gay rights movement positions itself. In Georgia’s 2004 election, a constitutional amendment was proposed defining marriage as legal unions between only biological men and women. In response, campaigns were organized by both supporters and opponents to same-sex marriage. This thesis examines the politics of spectacle at play through which both sides of this argument positioned themselves. This thesis employs anthropological theory, queer theory and public sphere literature to …
An Examination Of The Human Fibrinogen-Like Protein2: Sequence Variations And Genetic Expression By Human Endothelial Cells, Meredith E. Jenkins
An Examination Of The Human Fibrinogen-Like Protein2: Sequence Variations And Genetic Expression By Human Endothelial Cells, Meredith E. Jenkins
Biology Theses
A role for Fgl2 (fibroleukin) in thrombophilic-associated human fetal loss has been indicated by previous studies. Clotting of vascular vessels of the placenta and fetus interferes with adequate blood circulation. The human Fgl2 gene was sequenced with identification of six SNPs, suggesting an association with a population of women suffering from recurrent fetal losses. A small sample size however, prevented precise statistical analyses of this association. In vitro, human endothelial cells (HUVECs) were not found to constitutively express Fgl2, but were shown to up-regulate its expression when challenged with IFN-γ and TNF-α. Interestingly, TNF-α was only shown to induce expression …
Functional Analysis Of The Murine Oligoadenylate Synthetase 1b (Oas1b), Husni Elbahesh
Functional Analysis Of The Murine Oligoadenylate Synthetase 1b (Oas1b), Husni Elbahesh
Biology Theses
The flavivirus resistance gene, Flv, in mice has been identified as 2'-5' oligoadenylate synthetase 1b (Oas1b). Susceptible mice produce a protein that is truncated (Oas1btr) at the C-terminus due to a premature stop codon encoded by a C820T transition. Mice produce 8 Oas1 proteins, Oas1a-Oas1h. In the present study, Oas1a, Oas1b and Oas1btr were expressed as MBP-fusion proteins in bacteria and purified. 2-5A synthetase activity was demonstrated using MBP-Oas1a, while neither MBP-Oas1b nor MBP-Oas1btr were functionally active. The 2-5A synthetase activity of MBP-Oas1a was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner by the addition of MBP-Oas1b but not MBPOas1btr. Finally, three RNA …
Topology Control, Routing Protocols And Performance Evaluation For Mobile Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Hui Liu
Topology Control, Routing Protocols And Performance Evaluation For Mobile Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Hui Liu
Computer Science Dissertations
A mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) is a collection of wireless mobile nodes forming a temporary network without the support of any established infrastructure or centralized administration. There are many potential applications based the techniques of MANETs, such as disaster rescue, personal area networking, wireless conference, military applications, etc. MANETs face a number of challenges for designing a scalable routing protocol due to their natural characteristics. Guaranteeing delivery and the capability to handle dynamic connectivity are the most important issues for routing protocols in MANETs. In this dissertation, we will propose four algorithms that address different aspects of routing problems in …
Paul Renner And Futura: The Effects Of Culture, Technology, And Social Continuity On The Design Of Type For Printing, Charles C. Leonard
Paul Renner And Futura: The Effects Of Culture, Technology, And Social Continuity On The Design Of Type For Printing, Charles C. Leonard
Art and Design Theses
This thesis reviews the circumstances that led to what Paul Renner called “the inflation of historicism,” places his response to that problem in the context of the Weimar Republic, details how the German attributes with which he began the project were displaced from the typeface that emerged in 1927, demonstrates that Futura belongs to a new category of serif-less roman fonts rooted in Arts and Crafts lettering, and considers why the specifically German aspects of the project have gone unrecognized for over seventy years. Renner’s writing is compared to ideas prevalent in early twentieth-century German cultural discourse, and Futura’s design …
What Is The Nature Of The Professional Practice Of Artist-Teachers? Four Case Studies, Ashley Dawn Sweat
What Is The Nature Of The Professional Practice Of Artist-Teachers? Four Case Studies, Ashley Dawn Sweat
Art and Design Theses
Many artist-teachers struggle to nurture and pursue their ambitions in their dual roles. The purpose of this research is to explore the nature of the professional practices of artist-teachers. While there is a substantial amount of research that provides models of artist-teachers, who teach at the post secondary levels, there are not many models for artist-teachers who teach primary and secondary age groups. Four artist-teachers, whose practices are currently contributing to the art world, as well as the educational world, were interviewed for a multiple case study. The roles represented in the study include painters, sculptors, a ceramist, a musician, …
Hexa-Aryl/Alkylsubstituted Cyclopropanes, Phong Minh Truong
Hexa-Aryl/Alkylsubstituted Cyclopropanes, Phong Minh Truong
Chemistry Theses
A series of penta-aryl/alkyl-1-(toluene-4-sulfonyl)-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazole 5a-c was synthesized by addition of methyllithium or phenylllithium followed by trapping the nitrogen anion intermediate with tosyl-fluoride to cyclic azines 2a,b. Addition of methyllithium or phenyllithium to 5a-c generated a series of hexa-aryl/alkylsubstituted-4,5-dihydro-3H-pyrazoles 6a-c. Neat thermolysis of hexa-aryl/alkylsubstituted-4,5-dihydro-3H-pyrazoles 6a-c at 200◦C produced hexa-aryl/alkylsubstituted cyclopropanes 7a-c in high yield.

Peer Review In The Contemporary Corporation, Shannon Warren Wisdom
Peer Review In The Contemporary Corporation, Shannon Warren Wisdom
English Dissertations
My dissertation explores the history, pedagogy, and practice of peer review in academia and in the workplace, so that I could suggest strategies for improving peer review in the contemporary corporation. Several scholars have studied collaborative writing—of which peer review is just one type—but few have specifically and thoroughly treated the subject of peer review. I surveyed the technical writers in my organization as well as other local writers about their thoughts on peer review. For improving peer review in the workplace, two predominant themes emerged: improve the corporate culture and assign a manager to the process. Therefore, I explore …
