What Is The Power Of Identity? Examining The Moderating Role Of Racial Identity Latent Profiles On The Relationship Between Race-Related Stress And Trauma Symptomatology Among African American Women, Ifrah S. Sheikh

Psychology Theses

The current study investigated the relationship between race-related stress and trauma symptomatology, and the potential for racial identity profiles to mitigate or exacerbate this relationship in a nontreatment-seeking sample of trauma-exposed African American women (N = 222). Bivariate correlation analyses revealed race-related stress was significantly and positively correlated with total PTSD symptoms, hyperarousal symptoms, avoidance symptoms, and reexperiencing symptoms. Racial identity profiles emerged from latent profile analyses and supported a 3-class solution: Undifferentiated, Detached, and Nationalist. The Nationalist profile group experienced significantly higher race-related stress compared to the Detached and Undifferentiated profiles. Moderation analyses revealed racial identity profile type significantly …

ABSTRACT

Reconciling External Clinical Data: Providers’ Friend Or Foe?

By

Mindy M. Oberg

November 2021

Committee Chair: Dr. Carol Saunders

Major Academic Unit: Doctorate in Business Administration

Adopting Health Information Exchanges (HIE) increased the exchange of clinical data relevant to patient care. This type of data exchange can reduce medical costs and increase efficiencies of care. However, most health care organizations and providers fail to reap the full intended benefits, as only 28% of health care organizations integrate external data into patients’ charts. Researchers, such as Hossein Ahmadi, Mark J. Dobrow, Nir Menachemi, and Farahnaz Sadoughi validate there is no …

Social Entrepreneurship Within A Capitalist Economy, Audria King

Business Administration Dissertations

Recent world events have reignited awareness and conversations about income inequality across the world and even in the richest country on the planet, the United States. Social unrest and a pandemic have thrust the staggering gap between the haves and the have-nots front and center and become a part of regular public discourse – specifically as it pertains to those who are considered corporate benefactors versus the production mechanism, i.e. the workers. Attempts to remedy some of the societal ills sowed by capitalism have been put forth by corporations via various initiatives and activities known as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). …

The Role Of Signal Regulatory Protein Alpha In Hemophagocytic And Cytokine Storm Syndromes, Koby Kidder Dec 2021

The Role Of Signal Regulatory Protein Alpha In Hemophagocytic And Cytokine Storm Syndromes, Koby Kidder

Biology Dissertations

The immune system not only eliminates pathogens and other untoward factors but effectively does so without incurring host-compromising collateral damage. Among the many leukocytes buttressing this balancing act, macrophages reside at the helm of innate immunity and orchestrate finely tuned immune responses by acquiring a phenotype bespoke to the underlying inflammatory insult, the optimal result of which is the swift removal of noxious stimuli and reversion to homeostasis thereafter. On rare occasion, macrophages become hyper-activated and potentiate inflammation that often proves life-threatening rather than life-saving, as is the case in hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and other cytokine storm syndromes (CSS). Improving …

The Importance And Needs For A Standardized Preceptor Training Program In Respiratory Therapy Departments In Riyadh City, Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Y. Aljoni

Respiratory Therapy Theses

BACKGROUND: Preceptorship is defined as the interaction between the staff and a student. It was the only method of transmitting and providing respiratory therapy (RT) education. Preceptorship is the preferred method of educating both undergraduate and graduate students. Due to a staffing shortage, clinical instructors (Cis) are rarely allocated to RT students. Instead, they are placed with RT staff who act as a clinical preceptor with little to no formal education training. Therefore, the RT students may not receive sufficient clinical education. PURPOSE: This study aims to examine the availability and the method of preceptor training and evaluates the importance …

The Macintosh Professionals: Crises In Industrial Lore And Fan Reception Of Apple's Desktop Computers, Taylor Olmstead

Film, Media & Theatre Theses

This thesis uses industrial discourse analysis and fan studies to posit that fandom has the power to intervene in moments when producers and brands thwart expectations generated by industrial lore. Steve Jobs’ “Four Quadrants” strategy became a crucial piece of Apple’s industrial lore is shown to influence the expectations of Apple fans. Negative fan reactions to new product launches will be used to demonstrate the impact of said lore and the openings it creates for dissent. Analysis of the industrial discourse surrounding the discontinued iMac Pro and redesigned Mac Pro determines the efficacy of fan interventions in eliciting a concession …

A Mathematical Model For Co-Evolution Of Pandemic And Infodemic With Vaccine, Anthony Morciglio Dec 2021

A Mathematical Model For Co-Evolution Of Pandemic And Infodemic With Vaccine, Anthony Morciglio

Mathematics Theses

Vaccine hesitancy, resulting from bad information, threatens the possibility of ending the COVID-19 pandemic through mass vaccination. The COVID-19 pandemic coincides with an overabundance of controversial information regarding disease transmission and public health mitigation approaches. We investigate a phenomenological co-evolution of pandemic and infodemic in the context of COVID-19 with an emphasis on evolutionary game theory. Using bifurcation analysis, we determine the limit cycle boundaries and the separation of attraction between stable foci of infection and periodic outbreaks of infection. Our results suggest that low risk perception of vaccination relative to infection is not sufficient to eradicate the disease; promotion …

Examinación Del Concepto De La Reencarnación En La Nueva Era Y Tres Otras Áreas De Estudio, Adam H. Brown

World Languages and Cultures Theses

Stressful Situations: Investigating Cell Death Pathways In Protozoal Parasite Crithidia Fasciculata, Andrew Ho

Biology Theses

Protozoa of the Class Kinetoplastida include clinically-relevant pathogens such as Leishmania and Trypanosoma. Although specific mechanisms or biological significance of programmed cell death (PCD) have yet to be established in these organisms, morphological and biochemical characteristics similar to mammalian PCD have been observed when triggered by various stressors. Crithidia fasciculata is a trypanosomatid that does not infect humans and is a model for studying cell death pathways. This study identifies orthologous proteins potentially involved in PCD in C. fasciculata and clinically-relevant species. Oxidative stress, thermal stress, rotenone, and starvation were used to induce PCD-like processes. Morphological and nuclear features were …

The Bold And The Beautiful: Portraiture In Pakistani Truck Art, Farah Ali Dec 2021

The Bold And The Beautiful: Portraiture In Pakistani Truck Art, Farah Ali

Art and Design Theses

The evolution of portraiture in Pakistani truck painting is indicative of strong global influences and local folk elements coming together. Without much patronage or formal vocational guidance, truck painters have inadvertently created a contemporary pop culture phenomenon internationally recognized today as distinctly Pakistani. Truck art and its artists' role in carving out a national identity for Pakistan is a postmodernist continuation of cultural legacies. I argue that truck art has now transcended into a “glocal” entity, more in terms of subject matter than stylistic representation, mainly due to the relentless underappreciated efforts of its artists and that this fusion of …

Multinational Enterprise Performance In Advanced Economies And Emerging Markets, Kubilay Sabri Levent Ozkan Dec 2021

Multinational Enterprise Performance In Advanced Economies And Emerging Markets, Kubilay Sabri Levent Ozkan

Marketing Dissertations

The current global economy is best described as a competitive landscape where firms from different parts of the world roam in each other’s markets. This dissertation explores the factors influencing the performance of firms in foreign markets.

In the first essay, I explored a fundamental phenomenon for international business: Why can’t focal firms survive and withdraw from foreign markets? Drawing from contingency theory, I contend that an international market exit typically stems from a misalignment between strategy and the foreign market risk environment. The qualitative analysis of 62 actual cases suggests that most misalignments are cross-cultural risk-related and stem from …

Is The Role Model Effect Related To The Motivation Of Women Running For Office? An Investigation Of The Role Model Effect On Women In The Workforce, Courtney Lawrence

Political Science Theses

This paper focuses on the relationship between the role model effect, and the motivation of women running for office. Many studies have suggested that the role model effect is associated with women entering political races, since women become more politically ambitious when more female candidates appear on the ballot. However, the extant literature tends to have a general focus on younger women and girls as opposed to other groups of women. Therefore, this paper examines the ways in which the role model effect is experienced by women already in the workforce. Five female participants from the researcher’s network, who occupy …

Neocolonialism And Terrorist Activities In Africa: A Case Study Of Nigeria, Udoka W. Nwune Dec 2021

Neocolonialism And Terrorist Activities In Africa: A Case Study Of Nigeria, Udoka W. Nwune

Political Science Theses

Previous literature has overlooked the connection of neocolonialism and terrorist activities in Nigeria. This research explores how neocolonialism stimulates corruption and bad governance in postcolonial states like Nigeria, and how corruption and bad governance in turn have prompted a societal menace in which terrorist activities have thrived in Nigeria. The study highlights that in the case of Nigeria there is no conceptual difference between bad governance and corruption. Thus, corruption and bad governance occurs alongside. The study undercovers the underlying effects of neocolonialism on the Nigeria state as well as how corruption and bad governance deters economic development, social inclusion, …

Mechanistic Characterization Of Active Site Residues In Nitronate Monooxygenase From Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Pao1, Christopher Aguillon Dec 2021

Mechanistic Characterization Of Active Site Residues In Nitronate Monooxygenase From Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Pao1, Christopher Aguillon

Chemistry Theses

Propionate 3-nitronate (P3N) is a natural toxin that irreversibly inhibits the Krebs cycle – a life sustaining metabolic pathway. Nitronate monooxygenase detoxifies P3N using molecular oxygen. Among ∼500 NMO sequences from various organisms, NMO has evolved to contain Y109, Y254, Y299, Y303, K307, and H183 in putative NMOs. In this thesis, the role of these select residues in the binding and oxidation of P3N is studied. Using steady state kinetics and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, Y109, Y254, Y299, Y303, and K307 were found to have no role in the turnover of P3N. Utilizing steady-state, rapid kinetics, and x-ray crystallography, H183 was …

Profiling Substrate Proteins Of Ring And Rbr Type E3 Ligases By Orthogonal Ubiquitin Transfer And The Development Of A Peptide Activator Targeting Hect-Type E3 Ligase, Li Zhou

Chemistry Dissertations

RING finger protein 38 (RNF38) is a member of the RING family of E3 ubiquitin (UB) ligases while HHARI is one of RBR family members: both regulate key processes in the cell. Through the E1-E2-E3 cascades, RNF38 and HHARI transfer UB to cellular proteins and regulate their stability, subcellular localization, and interaction with other proteins. Identifying the ubiquitination targets of RNF38 and HHARI holds the key to deciphering their roles in cell regulation. In this study, we used phage display to engineer the RING domains of the two E3 ligases for their incorporation into an orthogonal UB transfer (OUT) cascade …

Anthropology Theses

Originating in Mayapan in the Late Postclassic Period (AD 1100- AD 1500) Chen Mul Modeled effigy censers quickly spread throughout the northern part of the Yucatán Peninsula. The part moldmade and part modeled production process created a large assortment of Maya gods readily available for assembly. Ongoing research in Quintana Roo has found several Chen Mul censers in cave shrines and altars. Caves in the Maya region have long been associated with religious rituals and activities. Chen Mul censers found in cave shrines and alters indicate what rituals took place based on the Maya god they were modeled after. Notably, …

Artifact Discard Eligibility: A Potential Alleviation To The Growing Curation Crisis, Andrew Jerome Blank Dec 2021

Artifact Discard Eligibility: A Potential Alleviation To The Growing Curation Crisis, Andrew Jerome Blank

Anthropology Theses

This thesis discusses current and past issues surrounding archaeological curation, often referred to in relevant literature as the “curation crisis”. Curation facilities lack the space and time to properly curate legacy collections, which in turn increases the cost necessary to curate modern collections. Some archaeologists propose discarding materials rather than curating them; however, by discarding materials from a collection the future research potential of the collection is negatively affected. In an attempt to alleviate this curation crisis while minimizing damage to future research opportunities, this thesis proposes a model for the systematic discard of certain machine-made, non-diagnostic, historical artifacts both …

Archaeological Analysis Of Built Environments At Coastal Ancient Maya Port Sites, Lindsey A. Goff Dec 2021

Archaeological Analysis Of Built Environments At Coastal Ancient Maya Port Sites, Lindsey A. Goff

Anthropology Theses

Archaeological research along the littoral of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula has led to the discovery of hundreds of pre-contact coastal settlements. Following the work of Andrews (1990), these sites had multiple functions ranging for simple fishing villages to international port sites that facilitated long-distance, canoe-based trade. It is the latter category that I focus on in this thesis. The built environment of these port sites and the geomorphological characteristics of their surrounding coastline certainly played a critical role in the services they provided for traders. While individual site-level analyses exist, I take a broader comparative approach in order to highlight the …
