Gardner–Webb University hosted Fall Commencement on Monday, Dec. 15 in the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center at 10 a.m. More than 250 graduates were honored for their achievements during the ceremony. Many graduates participated in the ceremony through prayer, scripture reading, and commencement speeches.

Throughout the past three years, Gardner-Webb University’s baseball team has raised thousands of dollars to help children fight cancer. Players experienced first hand how that support impacts lives during a recent visit to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, N.C. Ten GWU baseball players and coaches toured the hospital, learned about its services and interacted with children on a day that helped foster an appreciation for the challenges cancer patients face, said GWU Head Baseball Coach Rusty Stroupe.

Gardner-Webb University will award over 250 degrees during the 2014 fall commencement exercises on Monday, Dec. 15 at 10 a.m. in the Paul Porter Arena of the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center, located on the campus of Gardner-Webb University. Approximately 270 students have earned degrees and a majority of those graduates will don their cap-and-gown to celebrate their hard work. The ceremony will honor students who have successfully completed undergraduate, degree completion, and graduate programs.

The world-renowned newspaper publication The New York Times has selected the work of a Gardner-Webb University history professor to appear in its online opinion/editorial section, which features commentary from a variety of authors on the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. GWU Assistant Professor of History Dr. Joseph Moore says recent research he completed relating to the history of Scottish Covenanters, Christianity, and early-American politics led him to pitch an idea to editors at The New York Times. The thought became reality on Thursday, Dec. 4 when his article, “Lincoln, God and the Constitution,” was published online at NYTimes.com.

A national conference held in Charlotte, N.C., in October gave Gardner-Webb University business students a chance to witness marketing and sales techniques in action, and GWU Marketing Instructor Mischia Taylor is hoping the trip marks the beginning of many other similar opportunities to connect classroom discussion and real-world application. When Taylor discovered that the 2014 National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) Annual Conference would be held in Charlotte, she immediately began working to make sure her students could experience business practices in action. The cost of attending the conference, at $50 per student, was prohibitive.

Gardner-Webb University will host stage performer and GWU alumnus Nathan Rouse (’02) on Tuesday, Dec. 2, in the final Dimensions program of the fall semester. Rouse will perform part of the nativity drama, “The Birth,” a theatrical production he has directed and performed for nine years to tell the Christmas story through the monologue perspectives of the innkeeper, the wise man, and the shepherd. The show takes place on a mostly empty stage, where actors speak, sing and dance to transport the audience to the nativity scene through imagination.

Gardner-Webb University is proud to present the 2014 Advent Devotional. This year’s devotional is available as a traditional written book, and for the first time the seasonal guide can also be found online in audio format via the WGWG.org SoundCloud page. The University offers the Advent devotional to the community each year as a guide for reflecting on the birth of Jesus Christ and focusing on the holy blessings of the Christmas season.

This year’s festive holiday event is free and set for Thursday, Dec. 4, beginning at 7 p.m. in Stewart Hall of the Tucker Student Center. GWU first ushered in the Christmas season with a Festival of Lights in 1985, and the University offers the event as a gift to the community each year, shared Dr. Paul Etter, professor of music in the GWU School of Performing and Visual Arts.
