Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction Of Florida Bay, South Florida, Using Benthic Foraminifera, Jie Cheng Jun 2009

Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction Of Florida Bay, South Florida, Using Benthic Foraminifera, Jie Cheng

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Efforts that are underway to rehabilitate the Florida Bay ecosystem to a more natural state are best guided by a comprehensive understanding of the natural versus human-induced variability that has existed within the ecosystem. Benthic foraminifera, which are well-known paleoenvironmental indicators, were identified in 203 sediment samples from six sediment cores taken from Florida Bay, and analyzed to understand the environmental variability through anthropogenically unaltered and altered periods. In this research, taxa serving as indicators of (1) seagrass abundance (which is correlated with water quality), (2) salinity, and (3) general habitat change, were studied in detail over the past 120 …

Quantitative Diatom-Based Reconstruction Of Paleoenvironmental Conditions In Florida Bay And Biscayne Bay, U.S.A., Anna Honorata Wachnicka

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The spatial and temporal distribution of modern diatom assemblages in surface sediments, on the most dominant macrophytes, and in the water column at 96 locations in Florida Bay, Biscayne Bay and adjacent regions were examined in order to develop paleoenvironmental prediction models for this region. Analyses of these distributions revealed distinct temporal and spatial differences in assemblages among the locations. The differences among diatom assemblages living on subaquatic vegetation and sediments, and in the water column were significant. Because concentrations of salts, total phosphorus (WTP), total nitrogen (WTN) and total organic carbon (WTOC) are partly controlled by water management in …

Interspecific Variation In The Elemental And Stable Isotope Content Of Seagrasses In South Florida, Justin E. Campbell, James W. Fourqurean Jan 2009

Interspecific Variation In The Elemental And Stable Isotope Content Of Seagrasses In South Florida, Justin E. Campbell, James W. Fourqurean

FCE LTER Journal Articles

The elemental (C, N, and P) and isotope (δ13C, δ15N) content of leaves of the seagrasses Thalassia testudinum, Halodule wrightii, and Syringodium filiforme were measured across a 10 000 km2 survey of the seagrass communities of South Florida, USA, in 1999 and 2000. Trends at local and broad spatial scales were compared to examine interspecific variation in the seagrass characteristics often used as ecological indicators. The elemental and stable isotope contents of all species were variable and demonstrated marked interspecific variation. At broad spatial scales, mean N:P ratios were lowest for T. testudinum (36.5 ± 1.1) and S. filiforme (38.9 …

Carbon And Nitrogen Stable Isotopic Patterns In South Florida Coastal Ecosystems: Modern And Paleoceanographic Perspectives, Samantha Lorraine Evans Mar 2008

Carbon And Nitrogen Stable Isotopic Patterns In South Florida Coastal Ecosystems: Modern And Paleoceanographic Perspectives, Samantha Lorraine Evans

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Long term management plans for restoration of natural flow conditions through the Everglades increase the importance of understanding potential nutrient impacts of increased freshwater delivery on coastal biogeochemistry. The present study sought to increase understanding of the coastal marine system of South Florida under modern conditions and through the anthropogenic changes in the last century, on scales ranging from individual nutrient cycle processes to seasonal patterns in organic material (OM) under varying hydrodynamic regime, to century scale analysis of sedimentary records. In all applications, carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic compositions of OM were examined as natural recorders of change and …

Hydrologic Measurements And Implications For Tree Island Formation Within Everglades National Park, Jose Bazante, Gary Jacobi, Helena M. Solo-Gabriele, David Reed, Sherry Mitchell-Bruker, Daniel L. Childers, Lynn Leonard, Michael Ross Jan 2006

Hydrologic Measurements And Implications For Tree Island Formation Within Everglades National Park, Jose Bazante, Gary Jacobi, Helena M. Solo-Gabriele, David Reed, Sherry Mitchell-Bruker, Daniel L. Childers, Lynn Leonard, Michael Ross

FCE LTER Journal Articles

Tree islands in the Shark River Slough of the Everglades National Park (ENP), in the southern state of Florida in the United States, are part of a wetland system of densely vegetated ridges interspersed within relatively open sloughs. Human alteration of this system has had dramatic negative effects on the landscape of the region and restoration efforts will require adjusting the hydrology of the region to assure the preservation of these important ecologic features. The primary objectives of this study were to document the hydrology in the vicinity of tree islands in ENP by measuring velocities in time and space …

Tree Islands In The Shark Slough Landscape: Interactions Of Vegetation, Hydrology, And Soils, Michael S. Ross, David T. Jones

SERC Research Reports

Executive Summary: This report presents what we have learned about tree islands of Shark Slough and adjacent marshes of Everglades National Park (ENP), based on ecological studies carried out in these wetlands during the period 2000-2003. The tree islands of Shark Slough share many features with tree islands elsewhere in the Everglades. Their current composition and community structure is determined to a large extent by recent hydrology, as well as by disturbances (fire, freezes, hurricanes, man). Tree islands have historical, cultural, and biological values that are recognized by nearly all parties to the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). Maintaining and/or …

Ecological Genetics Of Melaleuca Quinquenervia (Myrtaceae) : Population Variation In Florida And Its Influence On Performance Of The Biological Control Agent Oxyops Vitiosa (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), F. Allen Dray Jr. Oct 2003

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Melaleuca quinquenervia (Cav.) Blake (Myrtaceae) was imported into Florida from Australia over a century ago as a landscape plant. A favorable climate and periodic wildfires helped M. quinquenervia thrive; it now occupies about 200,000 hectares in southern Florida. A biological control (i.e., biocontrol) program against M. quinquenervia has been initiated, but not all biocontrol releases are successful. Some scientists have argued that poor biocontrol agent success may relate to genetic differences among populations of invasive weeds. I tested this premise by determining (1) the number and origins of M. quinquenervia introductions into Florida, (2) whether multiple introduction events resulted in …

Effects Of Resource Limitation On The Essential Oil Production In Ledum Palustre Ssp Decumbens (Ait.) Hultén, Tracy A. Baldwin Apr 2003

Effects Of Resource Limitation On The Essential Oil Production In Ledum Palustre Ssp Decumbens (Ait.) Hultén, Tracy A. Baldwin

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To understand the relationship between resource limitation and essential oil production of the widely-distributed boreal/arctic shrub, Ledum palustre ssp decumbens, I documented naturally occurring variation of essential oils over a growing season with
field collections along a latitudinal transect spanning boreal forest to arctic tundra. Collections from a long-term resource manipulation experiment at a single tundra site served as a means of teasing apart those factors that might be influencing the essential oil production of the species. The essential oil composition varied significantly along the
transect in the number of detectable components, but the relationships among resources and essential oil …

The Real Failure Rate Of Restaurants, Chris Muller, Robert H. Woods Jan 1991

The Real Failure Rate Of Restaurants, Chris Muller, Robert H. Woods

Hospitality Review

A common assumption in the restaurant industry is that restaurants fail at an exceedingly high rate. However, statistical research to support this assumption is limited. The authors present a study of 10 years in the life of three markets and offer new data for managers to consider.

Seasonal Activity And Road Mortality Of The Snakes Of The Pa-Hay-Okee Wetlands Of Everglades National Park, Frank S. Bernardino

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current study describes the composition and activity of the snake community of the Pa-hay-okee wetlands of Everglades National Park. The study was conducted from January 1987 to January 1989. Sixteen species were observed, with Thamnophis sauritus, Thamnophis sirtalis, Nerodia fasciata pictiventris, and Agkistrodon piscivorus representing 90.2% of the total sample. The seasonal distribution and activity of the snakes were closely related to fluctuations in the water table. Most activity occurred in the winter months as snakes migrated west following the drying water edge of Shark River Slough. Seventy percent of all snakes observed during this study …
