Theses : Honours

The purpose of this Investigation is to explore the intra-history of the three remaining Spanish Benedictine monks of New Norcia (Western Australia) who were recruited in the 1920s by the third Bishop of New Norcia, Anselmo Catalan. The three texts to be analysed are; Fr Maur Ejaunes' autobiography titled Memories of Fr Maur Enjuanes OSB. based on oral history transcripts and published In the New Norcia Studies journal, September 1998; Fr Seraphim Sanz' personal memoirs, unpublished and titled Vida y milagros de un monje benedictino (life and Miracles of a Benedictine Monk); and finally, the transcript of an oral interview …

Prisoners' Coping And Use Of Family Support, And Impact Of The Visiting Experience For Families, Lois F. Lange Jan 2002

Prisoners' Coping And Use Of Family Support, And Impact Of The Visiting Experience For Families, Lois F. Lange

Theses : Honours

This review was focussed on three areas (1) theoretical concepts of stress, coping and social support; (2) explanations for the patterns of prisoners' perceptions of their support-seeking behavior; and (3) the impact on families providing support. Prisoners' patterns of support seeking in the prison environment appear more consistent with hierarchical organisations than the domestication model of unit management. For stressful, uncontrollable situations, emotional support is sought from families, who are difficult to access. The family obligation to provide the free service of support to prisoners has implications for prison management and policy. Priorities for future research are (1) the impact …

Travellers And The Industrial Revolution: Observations Of Cornwall, Cynthia Lane

Theses : Honours

The following dissertation is a "contribution to contemporary debates about the industrial revolution and the perpetuation of 'differcnce'."1 It covers the era of Cornish industrialisation and the attendant socio-economic and cultural changes from the emergence of copper mining in the 1690s to the eve of its crash in 1866, through the observations of a selection of contemporary travellers/writers. It explores the image of Com wall through West Barbary versus Industrial Civilisation, and compares the county's processes of industrialisation with the canonical industrial revolution of the midlands and the north of England. Cornwall is examined as an example of the …

Validating The Use Of The Shuttle Walking Test In Healthy Adult Women, Micheal C.M. Lim Jan 2002

Validating The Use Of The Shuttle Walking Test In Healthy Adult Women, Micheal C.M. Lim

Theses : Honours

The Shuttle Walking Test (SWT), with its externally paced characteristics, is commonly used as an objective measure of functional capacity. The reliability and validity of the SWT has been previously shown but only in patient populations. No studies have been carried out to investigate the validity of the SWT in healthy adult women. Therefore, the primary aim of this test was to determine if the SWT is a valid field measure of cardiorespiratory fitness in healthy adult women. A secondary aim was to identify if variables, such as age, body composition and habitual physical activity influence performance on the SWT. …

Boundaries Of Socio-Political Discourse In The Singapore Media : The Out-Of-Bounds (Ob) Markers, Tan Pin Yang Jan 2002

Boundaries Of Socio-Political Discourse In The Singapore Media : The Out-Of-Bounds (Ob) Markers, Tan Pin Yang

Theses : Honours

November 1990, with the stepping down of Singapore's inaugural Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, saw the changing of the guard in Singapore, together with the promise of a more consultative style of government and greater citizen participation. However, the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) had been quick to point out that the new openness did not mean that they would tolerate undue criticisms of the government. Participants in political discussions are thus constrained by the Out-of-bounds markers (OB markers) which dictate the rules of political engagement and the topics which are deemed by the PAP as too sensitive for public …

Are Sri Funds Different From Non-Sri Funds, From A Financial Asset Perspective?: Evidence From Some Australian Sri Funds, Ingebjørg Kristoffersen Jan 2002

Are Sri Funds Different From Non-Sri Funds, From A Financial Asset Perspective?: Evidence From Some Australian Sri Funds, Ingebjørg Kristoffersen

Theses : Honours

Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) has seen a remarkable growth in recent years – primarily in the US and UK, but also in other markets including Australia. This growth, along with the development of corporate social responsibility, is suggested to be a result of increased awareness in social, environment and human rights issues. The literature offers several suggestions as to how SRIs and SRI funds may differ from other investments, as financial assets. It has been suggested that SRIs are more likely to represent smaller stocks, and also more likely represent growth rather than value stocks compared to non-SRIs. Furthermore, different …

The Fringing Halophytic Vegetation Of Lake Austin: A Study Of Mining Impacts And Vegetation Dynamics, Simone Vellekoop Jan 2002

The Fringing Halophytic Vegetation Of Lake Austin: A Study Of Mining Impacts And Vegetation Dynamics, Simone Vellekoop

Theses : Honours

Mining operations in arid regions of Western Australia are faced with many environmental management issues. One such issue is the disposal of mine water to the environment. Mine water is commonly discharged to nearby salt lakes under licence by the Department of Environmental Protection. Licence conditions dictate that the discharge water and the receiving environment be monitored to allow impacts on the environment to be detected. Salt lakes are associated with vegetation communities dominated by halophytic members of the Chenopodiaceae, While these plants are tolerant of salinity extremes, the germination stage of many species requires periods of lowered salinity. There …

Development Of Principles For The Integration Of Technology Education In The Primary Curriculum In Botswana, Patrick Tlalelo Mmokele Jan 2002

Development Of Principles For The Integration Of Technology Education In The Primary Curriculum In Botswana, Patrick Tlalelo Mmokele

Theses : Honours

Design and Technology is being taught in secondary schools in Botswana. This innovation began in junior secondary schools in 1989 and senior secondary schools in 1993. However it has not yet been introduced in primary schools. There have been some Design and Technology attainment targets which are outlined in the primary curriculum, but it is proposed that these do not fit well into the curriculum structure. This study seeks to investigate the principles upon which Design and Technology can be integrated into the primary curriculum in Botswana. Data for this study was collected through a review of related literature and …

Attributional Style, Depression And School Mobility : Assessing The Impact On Academic Achievement, Anne Grey Jan 2002

Attributional Style, Depression And School Mobility : Assessing The Impact On Academic Achievement, Anne Grey

Theses : Honours

Academic achievement can impact on psychological wellbeing and can have a profound impact on later educational and vocational opportunities. Failure to achieve well academically has been associated with a number of factors including depression, a pessimistic explanatory style and mobility. There is evidence too to suggest that the impact of these variables is greater on younger boys and older girls. One hundred and eight students (54 M, 54 F) from two Catholic metropolitan schools took part in this study into the impact of depressive symptomatology, attributional style and school mobility on academic achievement. It was hypothesised that lower levels of …

Changes In Muscle Function And Motorneuron Excitability Of The Triceps Surae Following A Bout Of Fatiguing Eccentric Exercise, Mikala Pougnault Jan 2002

Changes In Muscle Function And Motorneuron Excitability Of The Triceps Surae Following A Bout Of Fatiguing Eccentric Exercise, Mikala Pougnault

Theses : Honours

A reduction in capacity of the neuromuscular system associated with exercise can occur from a wide range of physiological and psychological factors. Many researchers have investigated neural activation during exercise, or the effects of muscle damage associated with eccentric exercise, but few have studied the prolonged effects of a bout of eccentric exercise on strength and motorneuron excitability. Eleven male and female subjects (aged 20-43 years) were tested to determine the effects of a fatiguing bout of eccentric exercise upon maximal isometric plantarflexion strength, motorneuron excitability, and neural activation of the soleus (SOL) and medial gastrocnemius (MG). The exercise consisted …

Direct Sequential Simulation Algorithms In Geostatistics, Robyn Robertson Jan 2002

Direct Sequential Simulation Algorithms In Geostatistics, Robyn Robertson

Theses : Honours

Conditional sequential simulation algorithms have been used in geostatistics for many years but we currently find new developments are being made in this field. This thesis presents two new direct sequential simulation with histogram reproduction algorithms and compares them with the efficient and widely used sequential Gaussian simulation algorithm and the original direct sequential simulation algorithm. We explore the possibility of reproducing both the semivariogram and the histogram without the need for a transformation to normal space, through optimising an objective function and placing linear constraints on the local conditional distributions. Programs from the GSLIB Fortran library are expanded to …

An Auto/Ethnographical Study On The Effect Of Context On The Experience Of Being A Volunteer With Refugees, Fran Price Jan 2002

An Auto/Ethnographical Study On The Effect Of Context On The Experience Of Being A Volunteer With Refugees, Fran Price

Theses : Honours

This study uses a critical social and feminist framework to explore the effect of context on the experience of being a volunteer with refugees. It is presented in an auto/ethnographical style, blending my own storying with the stories of other volunteers. My interest in this topic evolved as a result of my own personal experiences in volunteering with refugees in which I perceived certain contextual aspects to have had an impact on my identity and volunteering experiences. This study is therefore an attempt to make sense of my own experiences and to share in the experiences of other volunteers. Informal …

A Study In Teacher's [Sic] Perceptions And Understandings Of Their Pastoral Care Role And An Exploration Of How Social Workers Can Work Collaboratively With Teachers Within Pastoral Care Systems, Kirsty R. Shalders

Theses : Honours

This inquiry examines teacher's pastoral care roles in a government secondary school. Its purpose is to determine firstly what pastoral care is for teachers within these positions and secondly to articulate why pastoral care is needed in schools, and to discover how teachers and social workers can work together in school to find a common ground within pastoral care. The study explores both the individual experiences of the teachers as they enact this role within the school, but also examines the broader structural factors that are related to pastoral care in schools. The literature acknowledges the importance of pastoral care …

T(H)Ree Rhizome(S) On 'Close/Open' Encounters With Kinsella's Pastoralism Of The 'Radical' Kind, Klyth Tan Soo-Hong Jan 2002

T(H)Ree Rhizome(S) On 'Close/Open' Encounters With Kinsella's Pastoralism Of The 'Radical' Kind, Klyth Tan Soo-Hong

Theses : Honours

In his elaborative Landbridge 'statement of intent', Western Australian and International poet John Kinsella - whose phenomenal rise since the '90s is now a worldwide literary success story that needs no introduction - asserts a profound interest for the 'pastoral radical' (Kinsella, ed. Kinsella, Landbridge, 1999): “I'm particularly interested in the 'pastoral radical'- in blending the so-called pastoral tradition with the lingui.stically innovative. This 'hybrid' ironises the pastoral construct but allows for genuine movement through rural spaces. Landscape is central to my project - ways of seeing, questions of occupation and space, the position and relevance of the so-called 'lyrical …

An Exploratory Study Of Constructive Differentiation By Managers Of Multi-Ethnic Workforces In Indonesia And Malaysia, M. A. Fergusson-Stewart

Theses : Honours

Indonesia and Malaysia are two of Australia's closest geographical neighbours and represent major trading partners; Malaysia, as one of the economic success stories of Southeast Asia and Indonesia, as the third most populous nation in the world are politically and economically of great significance to business in Australia. Both have experienced racial rioting, the former as recently as 1998, and the later in 1969. Much of the tension that has led to these riots centres around the relationship between the ethnic Chinese communities in these countries and the other ethnic groups, particularly the Pribumi in Indonesia and the Bumiputera in …

Theses : Honours

This research project examines the growth dependant properties and composition of Cadmium Sulfide thin films produced by the Chemical Bath Deposition Method. The specific areas investigated are the effect of deposition temperature, the effect of an Indium dopant on the films structure and properties, and the effects of post deposition processing such as annealing in air on the film composition. The chemical bath deposition apparatus used has been refined and tested to ensure that the films were grown in a more efficient manner than previously, with more control of the influencing deposition parameters such as temperature. Films grown by the …

The Power Of Desire In Selected Plays By Henrik Ibsen, Brooke Torrens Jan 2002

The Power Of Desire In Selected Plays By Henrik Ibsen, Brooke Torrens

Theses : Honours

This thesis explores how desire operates in selected plays by the Norwegian dramatist, Henrik Ibsen. I will argue that desire acts us a motivating force, urging the characters to seek fulfilment in their ideals, resulting in both defeat and triumph. The four plays considered, Rosmersholm, The Lady From the Sea. Hedda Gabler and The Master Builder, depict characters that are unable to sustain ordinary existence. This inability produces equivocal and contradictory human emotions that both restrict and impel the characters as they journey toward their downfall and salvation. The ambiguous nature of these four plays is examined in order to …

Television has been identified as being a major contributor to anxiety and fear of crime. The major aim of this study was to compare the level of state anxiety experienced individuals after viewing one of three versions of a television report related to prison escapes. The second aim was to determine if there were any differences in levels of anxiety between two age cohorts: middle-aged (35-45 years) and older-aged (65-75 years). A total of 120 participants were recruited using a snowball technique and randomly assigned to one of three groups using a lottery method. Participants completed demographic and attitudinal questionnaires, …

A Critical Exploration Of The School Context For Young Adolescents Completing Primary Education [Thesis], Sasha A. Stumpers Jan 2002

A Critical Exploration Of The School Context For Young Adolescents Completing Primary Education [Thesis], Sasha A. Stumpers

Theses : Honours

Recent research suggests that students' classroom engagement, increased academic effort, and subsequent success or failure arc not only influenced by individual differences in skills and pre-dispositions, but also by the school context. However, there is a need to further investigate the school context in relation to the well-being of the collective through concepts such as power and control. Therefore, this research sought to critically explore young adolescents' perceptions and experiences of their school context. Furthermore, how year seven students experience their school prior to the transition into high school was investigated. Using a semi-structured interview schedule, 8 male and 7 …

Predictors Of Young Women's Attitudes Toward Sexual Health Practices, Alison G. Dougall Jan 2002

Predictors Of Young Women's Attitudes Toward Sexual Health Practices, Alison G. Dougall

Theses : Honours

The present study examined whether cognitive (beliefs), affective (emotions) and I or behavioural processes predicted young women's attitudes towards their sexual health practices. For pragmatic reasons, safer sex promotion has largely relied on the provision of factual information to promote behaviour change. Although the importance of emotional and behavioural influences has been indicated, these elements have not traditionally been included in sexual health interventions. In order to examine this issue, Zanna and Rempel's (1988) tripartite model of attitude formation was used. A convenience sample of female participants (N=98) aged 18 to 29 years was asked to rate their attitudes towards …

Algorithmic Composition In Contrasting Musical Styles, Tristan Mcauley Jan 2002

Algorithmic Composition In Contrasting Musical Styles, Tristan Mcauley

Theses : Honours

The aim of this project is to create software that will give non-musical people the ability to compose convincingly 'real' music in specific musical genres. By 'real' music we mean music which is not obviously "machine generated", recognisable as being of the selected genre, of an aesthetically pleasing quality (a very subjective concept) and usable in a commercial context. To achieve this goal various computational techniques are used including genetic algorithms and finite state automata. The process involves an original, top down approach and a bottom up approach based on previous studies. A novel, skeletal structure is formed to depict …

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This research focuses on the role of Buddhism in the changing lives of rural women in Sri Lanka since Independence from the British in 1948 up to the present time. In this thesis I pose two questions: firstly, how important is Buddhism in the everyday lives of rural women and secondly, what impact has changes in Buddhism since Independence had upon laywomen and renunciants. I have chosen the rural village Athale, in the dry zone of southeast Sri Lanka as my area of investigation. The history of the village dates back to the times of the great hero King Dutugemunu …

Academic Gains Of Students With Special Needs In An Independent Religious School, Ivanka Saric Jan 2002

Academic Gains Of Students With Special Needs In An Independent Religious School, Ivanka Saric

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The number of children who are performing poorly in school-wide tests seems to be increasing in an independent religious school in the metropolitan area. Several children have been identified "at risk" or having special needs but they seem to show little if any improvement as they get promoted to higher grades. The study investigated the instructional and assessment strategies that upper primary school teachers were using in their classrooms to improve the academic and social skills of children defined as having special needs. Teachers' perceptions were examined to determine whether there had been any observable increases in the academic performance …

Factors Affecting The Bit Error Rate Performance Of The Indoor Radio Propagation Channel For 2.3-2.5 Ghz Frequency Band, Edward A. Walker Jan 2002

Factors Affecting The Bit Error Rate Performance Of The Indoor Radio Propagation Channel For 2.3-2.5 Ghz Frequency Band, Edward A. Walker

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The use of wireless in buildings based on microwave radio technology has recently become a viable alternative to the traditional wired transmission media. Because of the portable nature of radio transceivers, the need for extensive cabling of buildings with either twisted pair, coaxial, or optical fibre cable is eliminated. This is particularly desirable where high user mobility occurs and existing wiring is not in place, or buildings are heritage in nature and extensive cabling is seen as intrusive. Economic analysis bas also shown that significant labour cost savings can result by using a radio system or a hybrid mix of …
