School University Partnerships : What Do The Schools Want?, Laurie Brady
School University Partnerships : What Do The Schools Want?, Laurie Brady
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The growing perception of a need for robust school university partnerships to improve the quality of teacher education, and to promote learning outcomes for school students, has been given further impetus by the Ramsey recommendations in Quality Matters (2000). This article briefly reviews the literature on both professional development schools, and recent school university partnership initiatives in Australia, and reports a survey of all state primary school principals in NSW, on their support for a broad range of school university partnership activities. The findings indicate strong and uniform support for the full range of activities including supervision and mentoring, collaborative …
Globalisation: Building A Partnership Ethic For An Ecopedagogy In Western Australia, Geoffrey Lummis
Globalisation: Building A Partnership Ethic For An Ecopedagogy In Western Australia, Geoffrey Lummis
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper accommodates teachers with an interest in environmental education and links associated with Society and Environment, Science, and Technology and Enterprise learning areas. The role of globalisation and its impact upon environmental education reform are discussed. The Western Australian Curriculum Framework (Curriculum Council 1998) and the potential problems of metalanguage that a teacher faces when considering environmental reform are introduced. Several paradigms are introduced to underscore the complexity faced by initiating what I term ecopedagogy. Finally, four key principles that position a case for an ecopedagogy built upon a partnership ethic are offered. The principles are elaborated as: • …
Year 12 Students' Perceptions Of Deputy Principals' Effect On The Religious Culture In Catholic Secondary Schools, Robert Novacsek, John R. Godfrey
Year 12 Students' Perceptions Of Deputy Principals' Effect On The Religious Culture In Catholic Secondary Schools, Robert Novacsek, John R. Godfrey
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Research on how Deputy Principals affect the religious culture of Secondary Catholic Schools is extremely limited. Deputy Principals may play a crucial role in shaping the culture of schools in many ways, religious and otherwise. This study examined Year 12 students perception of the effect Deputy Principals have on the religious culture in their schools. Year 12 students have an insight into the role of Deputy Principals as they have more extensive school experience than the other high school grades; the nature of their interaction with Deputy Principals is more varied; and as they approach the conclusion of their secondary …
Beginning Teachers As Teacher-Researchers, Jan Gray, Glenda Campbell-Evans
Beginning Teachers As Teacher-Researchers, Jan Gray, Glenda Campbell-Evans
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
There has been a growing recognition in the international education community over the last decade of the need to begin the development of teacher-researchers in preservice courses. This paper explores the perceptions of professional empowerment of beginning teachers and their development as active teacher-researchers, drawing on data from surveys conducted in Western Australia of the 1999 and 2000 preservice teacher cohort. Consistent with issues emerging from current literature, the survey data confirmed the over-riding survival mindset of beginning teachers. However, responses also provided evidence of a research mindset open to opportunities later in their teaching career and the professional confidence …

Generalized Moving Average Models And Applications In High Frequency Data, Shelton Peiris, David E. Allen, Aerambamoorthy Thavaneswaran
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper considers a new class of first order moving average type time series model with index δ (> 0) to describe some hidden features of a time series. It is shown that this class of models provides a valid, simple solution to a new direction of time series modelling. In particular, for suitably chosen parameters (coefficient β and index δ) this type of models could be used to describe data with low or high frequency components. Various new results associated with this class are given in a general form. A simulation study is carried out to justify the theory. …

The Mediated Integration Arcitecture For Heterogeneous Data Integration, Chaiyaporn Chirathamjaree, Suvimol Mukviboonchai
Research outputs pre 2011
To interoperate data sources which differ structurally and semantically, particular problems occur, for example, problems of changing schemas in data sources will affect the integrated schema. In this paper, we propose the mediated integration architecture (MedInt), which employs mediation and wrapping techniques as the main components for the integration of heterogeneous systems. With MedInt, a mediator acts as an intermediate medium transforming queries to sub-queries, integrating result data and resolving conflicts. Wrappers then transform sub-queries to specific local queries so that each local system is able to understand the queries.

Applications Of Liquid Crystal Spatial Light Modulators In Optical Communications, Selam Ahderom, Mherdad Raisi, Kungmang Lo, Kamal E. Alameh, Rafie Mavaddat
Research outputs pre 2011
Advances in liquid crystal (LC) materials and VLSI technology have enabled the development of multi-phase spatial light modulators (SLM) that can perform high-resolution, dynamic optical beam positioning as well as temporal and spatial beam shaping in the 1550 nm optical communication window. These attractive features can effectively be used to achieve optical switching, optical spectral equalization, tunable optical filtering and many other functions that are important for future reconfigurable optical telecommunication networks. We review potential optical telecommunication applications based on LC-SLMs.

Validating The Use Of The Shuttle Walking Test In Healthy Adult Women, Micheal C.M. Lim
Theses : Honours
The Shuttle Walking Test (SWT), with its externally paced characteristics, is commonly used as an objective measure of functional capacity. The reliability and validity of the SWT has been previously shown but only in patient populations. No studies have been carried out to investigate the validity of the SWT in healthy adult women. Therefore, the primary aim of this test was to determine if the SWT is a valid field measure of cardiorespiratory fitness in healthy adult women. A secondary aim was to identify if variables, such as age, body composition and habitual physical activity influence performance on the SWT. …
Boundaries Of Socio-Political Discourse In The Singapore Media : The Out-Of-Bounds (Ob) Markers, Tan Pin Yang
Boundaries Of Socio-Political Discourse In The Singapore Media : The Out-Of-Bounds (Ob) Markers, Tan Pin Yang
Theses : Honours
November 1990, with the stepping down of Singapore's inaugural Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, saw the changing of the guard in Singapore, together with the promise of a more consultative style of government and greater citizen participation. However, the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) had been quick to point out that the new openness did not mean that they would tolerate undue criticisms of the government. Participants in political discussions are thus constrained by the Out-of-bounds markers (OB markers) which dictate the rules of political engagement and the topics which are deemed by the PAP as too sensitive for public …

The SEAR Project is described, as is the National Assessments of Scientific Literacy which will test the scientific literacy of year 6 students in 2003.
Design And Analysis Of Optical Layouts For Free Space Optical Switching, Kung-Meng Lo
Design And Analysis Of Optical Layouts For Free Space Optical Switching, Kung-Meng Lo
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The Intelligent Reconfigurable Optical Switch (IROS) is an N x N optical switch that uses two reflective Liquid Crystal (LC) Spatial Light Modulators (SLM} in a "Z" configuration to steer the incoming beams from the input ports to the designated output ports. Currently, the maximum steering capacity of practical SLM is limited to few degrees. For a dense optical switch, this makes the optical path between the input and output fiber ports relatively long. When a Gaussian beam is switched from an input fiber port to an output fiber port in a long free space interconnection topology, the beam's illumination …
Home And Away: The Tourist, The Flâneur And Everyday Life, John S. Gates
Home And Away: The Tourist, The Flâneur And Everyday Life, John S. Gates
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis examines the role and status of the tourist in the present day. It argues that the tourist, and the touristic experience, is emblematic of the consumption-based economy of late capitalism. It analyses tourism as a practice of, rather than opposed to, everyday life, for many subjects in late-capitalist Western society. The argument is developed by comparing and contrasting the tourist with the flâneur. The flâneur is regarded as a representative subjectivity of early modernity who developed visual and spatial practices, methodologies of movement and observation, which interpreted the city. The tourist's relationship with the global spaces of the …

How Green Is Your Hotel? : An Examination Of Environmentally Friendly Practices Of The Phuket Hotel Industry, Aungkan Thongkao
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The global hospitality industry is currently facing many challenges from the external business environment. These include the effects of global recession, a downturn in overall trade and an increased demand for service excellence from a much more quality conscious clientele. A more recent challenge, however, relates to an increase in global awareness of environmental issues. Contemporary consumers require goods and services to be produced, or delivered, in environmentally friendly ways. As a result, managers are being forced to reconsider their business strategies and activities. Indeed a wide range of industries has already responded to consumers' dictates on conservation issues. It …

Cross-Cultural Pragmatics: Politeness For The Customer In Spoken Aspects Of Service In The Restaurant In Australian English And Japanese, Chieko Imaeda
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
In listening to members of different cultures, it is possible to feel bad, even while recognising that the speaker is trying to speak politely. Sometimes we do not feel very comfortable with someone else’s speech, even though their expressions might be very polite with the choice of specific linguistic forms to show a high level of formality such as terms of address and specific types of formulaic expression such as ' I (don 't) think ... ' or ' I (don't) believe' . The speaker may be intending to speak politely in a considerate way. But the hearer's reaction may …

Genetic And Non-Genetic Factors Involved In Modifying The Clinical Severity Of Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease, Tina Schiavello
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is one of the most common Mendelian disorders, affecting approximately 1 in 1000 individuals. The disease is recognised as a systemic disorder, which expresses a complex phenotype between and within families. Mutations in at least two genes (PKDI and PKDZ) result in ADPKD, however, additional genetic and non-genetic factors are expected to contribute to the observed phenotypic variance.
Exploring Conditions For The Effective Implementation And Use Of Computerised Cognitive Tools, Carole N. Steketee
Exploring Conditions For The Effective Implementation And Use Of Computerised Cognitive Tools, Carole N. Steketee
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
In recent times, the term cognitive tool has been applied to computer technology that promotes reflective thinking and student-regulated learning. The interactive qualities of cognitive tools, and their ability to visually represent students' knowledge construction processes, promotes cognitive and metacognitive thinking and fosters learning for understanding. When used appropriately, cognitive tools are purported to bring about advanced cognitive gains through the amplification and augmentation of thinking and learning. These gains, however, have not been widespread given that information on how to use cognitive tools appropriately has largely eluded educators to date. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to identify …

Prisoners' Coping And Use Of Family Support, And Impact Of The Visiting Experience For Families, Lois F. Lange
Prisoners' Coping And Use Of Family Support, And Impact Of The Visiting Experience For Families, Lois F. Lange
Theses : Honours
This review was focussed on three areas (1) theoretical concepts of stress, coping and social support; (2) explanations for the patterns of prisoners' perceptions of their support-seeking behavior; and (3) the impact on families providing support. Prisoners' patterns of support seeking in the prison environment appear more consistent with hierarchical organisations than the domestication model of unit management. For stressful, uncontrollable situations, emotional support is sought from families, who are difficult to access. The family obligation to provide the free service of support to prisoners has implications for prison management and policy. Priorities for future research are (1) the impact …
