A Case Study Of Backward Design In A Customized Business English Course For Global Supply Chain Vendors In Francophone Africa, Steven J. Sacco Mar 2024

A Case Study Of Backward Design In A Customized Business English Course For Global Supply Chain Vendors In Francophone Africa, Steven J. Sacco

Global Advances in Business Communication

The present article describes a case study in which the author used domain analysis to create a backward-designed remedial listening comprehension course for global supply chain vendors employed with logistics-focused multinational corporations operating in Francophone Africa. The course is designed to address weaknesses in listening comprehension skills as exhibited by global supply chain vendors in Francophone Africa who work daily with South Asian customers. The weaknesses emanate, in large part, from the existence of World Englishes due to the rise of English as a lingua franca by multinational corporations. World Englishes refers to the existence of “emerging localized or indigenized …

Therapeutic And Recreational Experiences From Psilocybin Ingestion, Lisbette Zavala Mar 2024

Therapeutic And Recreational Experiences From Psilocybin Ingestion, Lisbette Zavala

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Mesoamerican cultures utilized the power of entheogenic substances for hundreds of years before the scientific interest in psilocybin - a natural growing, hallucinogenic mushroom. In the brief time before federal criminalization, psilocybin was used in a number of studies and trials that demonstrated therapeutic potential. Once psilocybin gained popularity for recreational use in the 1960s counterculture, the Controlled Substances Act scheduled both psilocybin and psilocin in Schedule I, where it remains today. It was not until nearly three decades later that psilocybin was reexamined for its efficacy in several mental illnesses and substance use disorders. With stricter guidelines, safer regulations, …

Critical Race Theory In Education: A Political Battleground With Teachers As The Casualties, Tierra Tresvant Mar 2024

Critical Race Theory In Education: A Political Battleground With Teachers As The Casualties, Tierra Tresvant

McNair Scholars Research Journal

The implications for critical race theory in public education has received much political discussion and debate. Many elected officials and lobbyists for and against policy reforms have vehemently engaged the subject matter. Despite this intense debate, politicians and citizens do not have a clear understanding of the origins and content of critical race theory. This research addresses the shortfall by tracking critical race theory at pivotal points, beginning with its introduction in the field of legal studies to its recent emergence in common education policy discourse. Additionally, it aggregates data about the laws and directives that have been introduced by …

Promoting Treatment Seeking Among Individuals With A Pedophilic Orientation Via Narrative Humanization: A Preliminary Analysis, Thairu Moore-Petinak Mar 2024

Promoting Treatment Seeking Among Individuals With A Pedophilic Orientation Via Narrative Humanization: A Preliminary Analysis, Thairu Moore-Petinak

McNair Scholars Research Journal

The stigmatization of individuals with a pedophilic orientation prompts maladaptive functioning in several domains and is associated with deleterious effects in the realm of child sexual abuse (CSA), most notably an increased risk of committing a sexual offense. A growing body of research has examined interventions aimed at reducing pedophilic stigmatization thereby increasing treatment utilization and early intervention. The present study serves as an extension of previous research conducted by Harper and colleagues and evaluates the impact of two interventions (narrative humanization and informative material) on university students’ explicit attitudes toward pedophilic-oriented individuals, as compared to a control condition. Participants …

The Impact Of Hormone Replacement Therapy On The Clavicle, Ryland B. Lambert Mar 2024

The Impact Of Hormone Replacement Therapy On The Clavicle, Ryland B. Lambert

McNair Scholars Research Journal

One of the many medical procedures of gender transition that are available for transgender individuals involve the use of cross-sex hormones to align one’s physical characteristics with one’s gender identity. During this process, transgender male-to-female patients may see the feminization of their bodies, while transgender female-to-male patients may see the masculinization of their bodies. Currently, little research has been done to show the full range of the effects that hormone replacement therapy induces, specifically regarding its impact on skeletal morphology. This lack of analysis is not only to the detriment of transgender patients themselves but also to the field of …

The Impact Of Food Insecurities On The Development Of Psychopathology In Childhood And Adolescence: A Literature Review, Jua'chelle Harmon Mar 2024

The Impact Of Food Insecurities On The Development Of Psychopathology In Childhood And Adolescence: A Literature Review, Jua'chelle Harmon

McNair Scholars Research Journal

With the widening inability to access affordable and nutritious food, many people worldwide deal with food insecurity, especially children and adolescents. This raises concerns for the well-being of children in the United States because of the impact food insecurity has on the development of children and adolescents regarding psychopathology. Recent research suggests that maternal depression, household sensitivity, parenting styles, and the exposure to violence may be directly linked to or explain the relation between food insecurity and psychopathology. This paper critically reviews and synthesizes the existing evidence of the direct relation between food insecurity and psychopathology. Additionally, this paper explores …

Exploring Gender Disparities In The Overcriminalization Of Psychiatric Illness And The Treatment Of Mentally Ill Incarcerated Individuals, Coreena A. Forstner Mar 2024

Exploring Gender Disparities In The Overcriminalization Of Psychiatric Illness And The Treatment Of Mentally Ill Incarcerated Individuals, Coreena A. Forstner

McNair Scholars Research Journal

This comprehensive literature review explores the intricate relationship between mental health and the criminal justice system, discussing its nuanced and multifaceted disparities and complexities. The over- criminalization of mental illness in the U.S. correctional system along with historical and contemporary inadequacies in access to treatment has led to the disproportionate representation of individuals with mental illness within the carceral system, as correctional facilities have become the nation’s largest mental health care provider. Mass deinstitutionalization, biased police interactions, and improper training has increased the representation of individuals with mental illness in the criminal justice system. This review of the literature will …

Social Thinking And Pay Inequities, Sydney Dhue Mar 2024

Social Thinking And Pay Inequities, Sydney Dhue

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Prior work has examined how racial prejudice can lead to the acceptance of unjust pay toward women and minorities. Other work has found that people who highly believe in a just world (BJW) often accept the outcome of events and situations despite differences in outcomes for certain individuals or groups. This study examined whether BJW and social dominance orientation (SDO) contribute to the acceptance of pay discrimination toward African Americans. Participants read a description of a job applicant and an offer of employment toward that applicant. For the description, participants received explicit information that the applicant is either Black or …

Communication And Cultural Strategies Impacting Ukrainian Refugees And Others Involved, Kimberley Barker, David A. Victor, Christine R. Day Jan 2024

Communication And Cultural Strategies Impacting Ukrainian Refugees And Others Involved, Kimberley Barker, David A. Victor, Christine R. Day

Global Advances in Business Communication

The Russian armed forces moved into Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Immediately and in the months following, millions of Ukrainians left their homes to seek a safe haven elsewhere. The dimensions of the Ukrainian refugee crisis are, in the words of Germany’s representative to the United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR) Katherina Lumpp, “unprecedented… the refugee movement we are now seeing in Ukraine is unique. It is currently the second largest refugee[1] situation in the world. No situation has developed this rapidly since the Second World War” (Bauer, 2022). As of October 2023, the UN Refugee Agency has …

A Semester Abroad Discussion Of The Film, Tatianna M. Rice Jan 2024

A Semester Abroad Discussion Of The Film, Tatianna M. Rice

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

What does a French and Digital Media Production double major do when they study abroad in Paris, France? Create a film, of course. A Semester Abroad follows my various travels during the Fall 2023 semester. In this discussion of my film, I break down the process from my initial research on French cinema, which focused on filmmakers during the French New Wave film movement of the late 1950s to the mid-1960s, to the process of creating this film. Inspired by the vignettes of Dreams directed by Akira Kurosawa, a film I first watched in my Global Cinema course, I created …

The Integration Of Certified Therapy Dog Teams Into Special Education: Insights Of Volunteer Handlers, Rana Aabed Jan 2024

The Integration Of Certified Therapy Dog Teams Into Special Education: Insights Of Volunteer Handlers, Rana Aabed

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The purpose of this study was to better understand how certified volunteer dog therapy handlers can be integrated into special education settings. Although the pet therapy discourse confirms the overall impact dog therapy has on youth’s psychological health (e.g., Groenewoud et al., 2023), research that could elucidate how volunteer handlers modify the way they have their dogs interact with special education populations is a present-day need that has otherwise not appeared in the literature. In response, this study involved a qualitative multiple-case investigation about the role of volunteer certified handlers and the dog therapy provisions they offer special education populations. …

Black Women In Hip-Hop: Rap Resistance, Alexxus G. Watson Jan 2024

Black Women In Hip-Hop: Rap Resistance, Alexxus G. Watson

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Hip-hop has emerged as a cultural and artistic movement that transcends time and geographical locations. The 50th anniversary of hip-hop has prompted widespread reflection and appreciation of the art form with particular notice to how hip-hop has contributed to the overall culture. Popular cultures of hip-hop are mixed; the most popular narrative is that it is a form of music that often has problematic lyrics and ideas that degrade mainly women and promote negative tropes and stereotypes of Black and brown people. I, and other scholars who truly appreciate the art form, have a different understanding of the impact of …

The Effect Of Body Size On Mate Choice By Ambystoma Laterale Breeding With Unisexual Salamanders, Cole Christian Duvall Jan 2024

The Effect Of Body Size On Mate Choice By Ambystoma Laterale Breeding With Unisexual Salamanders, Cole Christian Duvall

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Within the genus Ambystoma exists a complex of unisexual (all female) polyploid salamanders, which can breed with males of five sexual species of salamander. Unisexuals face intense sexual selection from diploid males, who prefer to mate with females of their own species. At the Edwin S. George Reserve (ESGR), it has been observed that LLJ unisexuals with large body sizes migrate to breeding ponds earlier than small unisexuals. A possible explanation for this behavior is that large LLJ unisexuals are sexually selected against, when compared to small unisexuals. We hypothesized that A. laterale males would prefer smaller LLJ unisexuals, when …

Characterizing Uhrf1 And Uhrf2 Interactions With Tail Peptides And Nucleosomes, Matthew Kostoff Jan 2024

Characterizing Uhrf1 And Uhrf2 Interactions With Tail Peptides And Nucleosomes, Matthew Kostoff

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

UHRF1 and UHRF2 proteins are multi-domain epigenetic proteins. They share many similarities in sequence and structure. The proteins have specific domains used to bind histone tails and nucleosomes. The purpose of our study is to determine if H4K20me3 is a true binding partner for them. To do so, we measured UHRF1 and UHRF2 protein interactions with histone tail peptides and nucleosomes containing H3unmod, H3K9me3, or H4K40me3. These experiments were conducted using peptide fluorescence polarization (FP) assays and nucleosome pull-downs. Both proteins bound H3K9me3 and H4K20me3 peptides well by FP. However, these proteins did not bind tightly to H4K20me3 and H3unmod …

Music From Rumble Strips: Developing An Experiment For Undergraduates, Hannah Popofski Jan 2024

Music From Rumble Strips: Developing An Experiment For Undergraduates, Hannah Popofski

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Rumble strips are parallel, evenly spaced grooves that have been ground into pavement, often with a trough-to-trough spacing of 12 inches. They are typically found along the shoulders of limited access highways and are designed to produce steering wheel vibrations to warn drivers that they have drifted off the road. One model for sound production by cars moving across rumble strips is that the fundamental frequency is determined by the number of troughs driven over each second. Assuming 12-inch spacing, the sound produced would have a frequency, in Hertz, that has the same numerical value as the speed of the …

Patrician Women In Renaissance Florence: Daughters, Wives, Mothers And Nuns, Elise Nehasil Jan 2024

Patrician Women In Renaissance Florence: Daughters, Wives, Mothers And Nuns, Elise Nehasil

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The society, economy, and political institutions of Renaissance Florence between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries were dominated by powerful merchant, patrician families. These families continually worked to maintain their positions at the apex of Florentine society. The women in these patrician families, as daughters, wives, mothers, nuns, played an integral role in their struggle to remain atop the social, economic, and political spheres. In examining the lives of these females we need to ask, to what extent were the lives, roles, and power of patrician women in Renaissance Florence shaped by the needs and desires of their families and the …

Predictors Of International Students' Acculturation Processes In The United States, Somaya Eissa Jan 2024

Predictors Of International Students' Acculturation Processes In The United States, Somaya Eissa

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

International students have unique acculturation experiences. There are several factors that can play a role in their acculturation process. This topic has not been widely investigated in midwestern middle sized universities in the United States. This study had four specific hypotheses. The first was that the assimilation model is going to be correlated to a stricter upbringing of the individual. The second was that the separation model is going to be correlated with higher religiosity. The third was that the integration model will be correlated with higher

levels of outgoingness. Lastly, that marginalization will be correlated with lower levels of …

The Time War: Comparatively Analyzing The Process Of Settler Colonialism & The Importance Of Personal Record, Naomi Hardin Jan 2024

The Time War: Comparatively Analyzing The Process Of Settler Colonialism & The Importance Of Personal Record, Naomi Hardin

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

In this work, I argue for the necessity of framing settler colonialism as an ongoing process of exploitation and genocide, rather than an event of the past. Understanding settler colonialism as ongoing allows us to recognize how white supremacy utilizes direct and indirect forms of violence to not just occupy land but extract resources, build infrastructure that ensures its survival, and displace indigenous peoples. I offer first a sketch of settler colonialism as it is happening in Palestine, Algeria, and the Americas. I engage with books and research essays to think comparatively about these phenomena & further reveal the legacies …

Financial Regulation In The Age Of Ai, Jack Leitao Jan 2024

Financial Regulation In The Age Of Ai, Jack Leitao

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Artificial intelligence has been playing an increasingly important role in the function of financial markets since the 1980s and the inception of program trading. The technology has evolved and has reached a more adolescent phase of development. As the technology has evolved, the risks introduced by massive algorithms keeping the markets humming have become more evident. The relationship between market volatility and trading volume adds risk as the speed and size of the trading activity has increased. High-frequency trading algorithms, while developed and refined by highly sophisticated institutions, still are at risk of succumbing to human error. Overall, algorithmic trading …
