What Makes An Oppressor? A Response To Ann Cudd's Analyzing Oppression, Marri Visscher Oct 2020

What Makes An Oppressor? A Response To Ann Cudd's Analyzing Oppression, Marri Visscher

Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy

Ann Cudd’s Analyzing Oppression ends on the question of resistance, where she details how each social group identified within oppressive systems should take up the project of creating a more just social structure. To do this, Cudd distinguishes between the oppressed, the merely privileged, and the oppressors, each with their own unique responsibilities for dismantling oppression. I find Cudd’s definition of ‘oppressors’ to be too narrowly tailored, and am arguing that seeking to increase or maintain one’s privilege relative to another group is sufficient to qualify an individual as an ‘oppressor’. Additionally, I will be expanding Cudd’s analysis of deformed …

Originalism: More Than Mere Foolishness Or Fraud, Levi Durham Oct 2020

Originalism: More Than Mere Foolishness Or Fraud, Levi Durham

Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy

Over the last few decades, the Supreme Court has become increasingly divided along ideological lines, and the outcomes of controversial issues are often entirely dependent on whether the conservative or the liberal justices have a majority. When deciding difficult cases, Supreme Court Justices seem to have little common ground to serve as the basis of their decisions. There is frequently no agreed upon method for deciding the Constitutionality of actions, statutes, and lower court rulings. One method that could be part of the answer is originalism: the doctrine that states that the meaning of the Constitution is unchanging. However, originalism …

How The Self-Serving Attributional Bias Affects Student Learning, Natalie Anderson Oct 2020

How The Self-Serving Attributional Bias Affects Student Learning, Natalie Anderson

Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy

The self-serving attributional bias (SSAB) is a very common human bias. The SSAB, however, is at odds with being a good learner, since learning (often) requires learning from failure. In this paper, I explain controlled failure as part of good learning activity design. This design (among others) should include a metacognitive component wherein students are asked to learn about learning from failure, which requires them to come face to face with their own SSAB. In order to alleviate this conflict, I advocate for two designs found in the teaching literature: after-event reviews and guided reflection.

Is There A Case For Permissivism?, Jennifer Kuo Oct 2020

Is There A Case For Permissivism?, Jennifer Kuo

Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy

This paper discusses Schoenfield’s arguments in favor of permissivism as discussed in “Permission to Believe,” including its main intuitive and theoretical motivations. The focus is specifically on critically evaluating the arguments combating objections that cite permissivists’ worrying arbitrariness in determining a truth-conducive method to lead to a conclusion based on a body of evidence. I argue that Schoenfield, in her defense of permissivism, uses instances of peer disagreement that do not qualify as permissivism due to inconclusive evidence, and that she does a better job showing alternative epistemic attitudes as implausible rather than strengthening the case for permissivism by overcoming …

Hegel's Two Faces Of Patriotism: War And The Modern Liberal State, Ben Schwabe Oct 2020

Hegel's Two Faces Of Patriotism: War And The Modern Liberal State, Ben Schwabe

Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy

A survey of the actions and rhetoric of the most influential contemporary international governance organizations would suggest that the greatest possible attainment of world peace is the highest goal of the modern world. The largest strain of modern political philosophy tends to concur: Hobbes’ commonwealth’s existence is justified by its provision of an escape from the state of war, Locke too seeks peace to protect life, liberty and property, and Kant lays out most explicitly the project and conditions for perpetual peace. Courage, among other virtues associated with the act of war, falls out of favor in the moral philosophy …

Poetry As Meditation: Buddhism, Daosim, And Han Shan, Emily Hunt Oct 2020

Poetry As Meditation: Buddhism, Daosim, And Han Shan, Emily Hunt

Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy

A role of poetry is to relieve the existential weight of one’s existence. For many, poetry is a means of survival, not a luxury. It is not readily seen as something that preserves humanity. Yet, it does. The role of the poet is to express more lucidly what is concealed beneath the skin. Language exists because one has an innate need to establish things that have not been previously established. Words are not founded in reality, and what is said is hardly ever what is meant. However, one does not notice this when she is merely perceiving the world around …

Art Therapy As An Intervention And Its Effects On Anxiety And Depression, Macy E. Whitenburg Oct 2020

Art Therapy As An Intervention And Its Effects On Anxiety And Depression, Macy E. Whitenburg

McNair Scholars Research Journal

There is a prevalence in the United States, as well as other countries, of individuals of all age ranges suffering from negative mental health issues, including anxiety and depression. Previous studies have shown that using art therapy as an intervention could help improve both anxiety and depression outcomes. This research examines different art therapy techniques, as well as combined interventions, and how different approaches can help improve anxiety and depression scores based on the self-reported Spielberger’s State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) tests, and a variety of other self-report assessment tests.

The Impact Of Social Stigmas On Sexual Health Seeking Behavior: A Review Of Literature, Jason O. Talley Oct 2020

The Impact Of Social Stigmas On Sexual Health Seeking Behavior: A Review Of Literature, Jason O. Talley

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Studies show a meaningful association between STI/HIV-related stigmas and low adherence to routine STI testing (Morris et al., 2014; Hull et al., 2017). These studies also show that healthcare workers help to facilitate a culture of stigmas among coworkers and patients. According to a national survey, only 16.6% of women and 6.1% of men who participated in the survey had been tested in the last 12 months (Cuffe et al., 2016). Low rates of STI testing contribute to the spread of chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, and syphilis (Big-Ideas-HIV-STIs.pdf, n.d.). The motivation for this literature review is to examine how STI and …

#Sayhername: Putting The "I" In Intersectionality In Black Female Social Movements, Gabrielle N. Reed Oct 2020

#Sayhername: Putting The "I" In Intersectionality In Black Female Social Movements, Gabrielle N. Reed

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Mediated channels continue to be one of the main methods of dispersing pertinent information to and from Black communities. Black women’s voices have historically been stifled due to patriarchy and racism; thus, Black women have often used forms of media as a primary means to build coalitions with other Black women and to effectively communicate resistance. This research will closely analyze how prominent participants in the #SayHerName movement approach intersectionality in the digital era of the 21st century. Data will be directly extracted from the digital platform Twitter to contribute to the growing conversation surrounding Black women’s impact on …

Impacts Of Variation In Food Availability On Spatial Habitat Use In Breeding And Non-Breeding Red Crossbills (Loxia Curvirostra), Liam C. Pendleton Oct 2020

Impacts Of Variation In Food Availability On Spatial Habitat Use In Breeding And Non-Breeding Red Crossbills (Loxia Curvirostra), Liam C. Pendleton

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Movement patterns, habitat use, and reproductive behavior are among many attributes impacted by the distribution of resources within habitats. Our study used radio telemetry to investigate the relationship between food availability and movement patterns of breeding and non-breeding red crossbills (Loxia curvirostra). Crossbills were captured and tracked in different seasons and under conifer seed mast and nonmast conditions. Telemetry data were used to generate statistical models to analyze spatial habitat use. Total linear distance traveled per total area of the home range was used as a comparative measure of activity within home ranges across specimens. We found a …

A Review Of Late Twentieth-Century Findings On Adolescent Development In Low-Income Single-Parent Households, Shannon K. Hawkins Jr. Oct 2020

A Review Of Late Twentieth-Century Findings On Adolescent Development In Low-Income Single-Parent Households, Shannon K. Hawkins Jr.

McNair Scholars Research Journal

It is generally understood that healthy adolescent development is influenced by a variety of factors. Current research on the effects of family structure on adolescent development have largely grown from data collected in the late twentieth century showing that when children grew up in a two-parent household they experienced significant advantages. According to Amato (2005), these advantages included experiencing a higher standard of living, more effective parenting, more cooperative co-parenting, and closer emotional relationships with both parents. Those who grew up in two-parent households demonstrated superior academic performance (Amato et al., 2015; Amato 2005), suggesting that children from single-parent environments …

An Experimental Investigation Of The Material Behavior Of Fdm Pctg Sockets, Avery Dumas Iv Oct 2020

An Experimental Investigation Of The Material Behavior Of Fdm Pctg Sockets, Avery Dumas Iv

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Additive manufacturing, or 3D printing technologies, has been extensively used to develop evidence-based methods to construct lower-limb prosthetic sockets. However, the resulting structural, or 3D-printed materials behavior, is not well understood. With the intent of supporting evidence-based design guidelines to print amputee-specific sockets, the structural behavior of successfully-worn transtibial check sockets made from PCTG and printed from the FDM 3D printing process was benchmarked. Specifically, ASTM D638 type I tensile test specimens were die-cut from sheets of material with the 3D-printed characteristics of the check socket. Test samples were cut parallel and perpendicular to the print direction and tested according …

Implementation Of A Mechanical Vibration Control System And Electric Locking Circuit For Atomic Sensing Research, David T. Delisle Oct 2020

Implementation Of A Mechanical Vibration Control System And Electric Locking Circuit For Atomic Sensing Research, David T. Delisle

McNair Scholars Research Journal

The long-term goal of this research effort is to use glass cells containing rubidium (Rb) as electric-field sensors via controlled laser probes. Two important steps to develop the experiment include the renovation of a Vibration Control System (VCS) and the completion of a laser frequency locking circuit for the existing External Cavity Diode Laser (ECDL) to provide active frequency stabilization.

Construction of the circuit will continue after the VCS is set up. This circuit will enable the ECDL to provide narrow-band excitation of rubidium atoms from the 5S to the 5P state [1]. Once the locking circuit is implemented and …

Effect Of Stress On The Health Of African American Women In Low-Income Neighborhoods, Jada C. Childs Oct 2020

Effect Of Stress On The Health Of African American Women In Low-Income Neighborhoods, Jada C. Childs

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Health problems such as obesity are more prevalent in populations of African American women than any other population in the United States. Stress has been found to disproportionately affect the health of African American women when compared to European American women. Factors such as neighborhood environment, socioeconomic status, and familial relationships play a significant role in the stress experienced by these women. This project reviews the current literature on the relationship between various stressors and the health of African American women. The purpose of this research is to increase understanding of the unique stressors that African American women face and …

Where We Go 1 We Go All: A Public Discourse Analysis Of Qanon, Kylar J. Chandler Oct 2020

Where We Go 1 We Go All: A Public Discourse Analysis Of Qanon, Kylar J. Chandler

McNair Scholars Research Journal

During the 2016 presidential campaign, candidate Donald Trump amassed a following of extremists. After Trump settled into his presidency, subsets of his original following emerged. One group included a committed following of an individual known by the code name “Q.” Q claimed to be a top-clearance military official who would slowly reveal the “truth” about the political “deep state.” Q communicated directly to their followers through “leaks,” or posts, on the anonymous message boards of 4chan, 8chan, and 8kun. This paper examines the content of these leaks and discusses how the leaks influenced the discourse of QAnon followers. This discourse …
