Auditing Algorithms: A Rational Counterfactual Framework, Seung C. Lee
Auditing Algorithms: A Rational Counterfactual Framework, Seung C. Lee
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms are increasingly employed by the private and public sectors to automate simple and complex decision-making processes, but the hype has blinded people to the resulting discriminatory and biased decisions. To hold algorithms accountable for such decisions as well as to determine the underlying factors, researchers have turned to a methodological tool known as the audit study. Quite a few studies on algorithmic decision-making have made strong claims about the causality between algorithms and biased decisions. Multiple protective measures have also been enacted against the discriminatory and biased algorithmic decision-making practices. Nevertheless, they are persistent …

Factors Affecting Students’ Satisfaction With Synchronous Online Instruction During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Xue Bai, Ephrem Eyob, Ade Ola, Serena Reese
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
A large number of institutions of higher learning at all levels transitioned hurriedly to remote and online learning in response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. However, recent studies have concluded that university-level students prefer learning in face-to-face settings. This study seeks to understand the factors that are driving students’ rejection of remote and online learning options and to provide insight into future efforts to implement strategies and tools to mitigate these adverse factors. The results show factors that contribute the most to students’ perceived satisfaction in the remote instructional setting are less interaction during live lectures, more distractions, less …

An Integrated View Of Knowledge Management Enablers, Components, And Benefits: Comprehensive Literature Review, Shuaibu Hassan Usman, Jigish Zaveri, Aminu Hamza
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
The key to success in the 21st century, knowledge-based economy, will be the effective and efficient management of knowledge. Knowledge Management (KM) has a direct impact on organizational success. KM in a knowledge-based economy entails growth, value, and improving living standards through knowledge creation, storage, and dissemination. This study aims to integrate KM enablers, components, and benefits into a single view through a comprehensive literature search. The integrative view of these three factors would facilitate the understanding of KM initiatives within organizations. This paper performs a comprehensive literature review to explain the KM enablers, components, and benefits. From the …

How Digital Leadership Competences And It Capabilities Affect An Organization's Ability To Digitally Transform And Adopt New Technologies, Melissa Brunner, Gabriel Gonzalez-Castañé, Pascal Ravesteijn
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Although much research has been done into the importance of IT Capabilities (ITC), Digital Leadership (DL) and Digital Transformation (DT) with regard to organizations’ firm performance and ability to thrive in the current digital market, there is little research on qualifying which specific ITC and DL competences affect the success of an organization's DT and ultimately impact their ability to adopt newly emerging technologies. This research aims to address the influence of DL and ITC on DT as well as which specific DL competences and ITC might ultimately affect an organization’s ability to successfully adopt newly emerging digital technologies. Quantitative …

Mental Health In U.S. Schools: Problems, Interventions, And Future Directions, Emma Rumpf-Snavely
Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice
The psychological well-being of American children has been a concern due to the rise in mental health issues. Efforts have been made to tackle some of the issues that are most prevalent among youth such as stress, depression, bullying, substance abuse, suicide and self-harm. Attempted solutions include legislation at the state level, school-wide regulations, and individualized supports. Despite these efforts, there are still discrepancies with implementation and regulation of policies and programs. These inconsistencies have resulted in the continual decline in the mental health of American youth. The United States can gain a more focused direction for their mental health …

Secondary Mathematics Teacher Beliefs: Heterogeneous Or Homogenous Tracking And Ability Grouping, Andrew Hughes
Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice
This study focused on secondary school mathematics teachers’ beliefs about tracking (ability grouping across classes) and ability grouping within classes and their perceived effects on student achievement, student affects and behaviors, and instruction. Case study methodology was employed, and semi-structured interviews conducted with a purposive sample of six teachers from two schools in a city within the southeastern United States. Three teachers worked in a school that predominantly tracks their students while the other three teachers worked in a school that mixes their students by ability across classes. Data from this study are consistent with social inequities reported in tracking …

Women Elementary Principals And Work-Life Balance, Joyce Lee Yang
Women Elementary Principals And Work-Life Balance, Joyce Lee Yang
Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice
Work-life balance (WLB) is a challenge for principals to navigate as the ever-increasing responsibilities require more time. Because time is limited, achieving balance between principals’ workloads and home responsibilities can cause significant stress. Often, women principals face additional challenges because of childcare and household responsibilities. To support principals in their practice and encourage them to enter and persist in the role, better policies and practices should be implemented. By providing more site level staff, fostering a culture where WLB is valued, releasing principals from non-essential obligations, and training principals to prioritize tasks, districts can help mitigate the overload principals experience.
