Betrayals In Academia And A Black Demon From Ephesus, Suleman Lazarus May 2019

Betrayals In Academia And A Black Demon From Ephesus, Suleman Lazarus

Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice

The poem is about my PhD experience. The title and parts of the themes are derived from an incident in the Bible (Acts 19:13-20). In order to provide a deeper meaning to my story, I have deployed a biblical allusion which connects with the story of the sons of Sceva, who made unsuccessful attempts to exorcise a man from Ephesus. They failed primarily because they operated not in the spirit but in the flesh.

Project-Based Learning For Span 316e: Criminal Justice Spanish, Carmen Jany

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy

Project-based Learning for Span 316E

For this course, I developed project-based learning starting with an open-ended question: Are Spanish language skills and cultural knowledge important for First Responders, Law Enforcement, and Prison Personnel to interact successfully with the Latino Population in Southern California? The discussion then led to the identification of important areas of knowledge (linguistic and cultural) for practitioners in Criminal Justice who engage with the Latino Population. Discussions relied on students’ everyday experiences and personal experiences. Moreover, examples from TV and Cinema were used. Students were then asked to identify a topic of interest and were, based on …

The Rise Of Women, #Metoo And Why It Matters, Meredith Conroy, Tiffany Jones, Kathy Nadeau Dec 2018

The Rise Of Women, #Metoo And Why It Matters, Meredith Conroy, Tiffany Jones, Kathy Nadeau

Anthropology Faculty Publications

In light of current political events here in the United States and around the world, such as the #MeToo movement, discussions about toxic masculinity, the tumultuous appointment of Justice Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court, and a worldwide surge of participation of women in politics, it is obvious that we are living in an important historical period where ideas about gender and power are being debated, reinforced, and challenged. While some political leaders blatantly dismiss gender discrimination and gender-based violence, the global community has recently acknowledged the significance of this issue by awarding the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize to two …

The Right To Be Human: Universal Design For Learning And Literacy Sponsorship As Liberatory Pedagogy, Jeremy Lunasco Dec 2018

The Right To Be Human: Universal Design For Learning And Literacy Sponsorship As Liberatory Pedagogy, Jeremy Lunasco

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This project explores the possibilities of implementing a critical and liberatory pedagogy within the confines of the prison. Building upon the fields of critical prison theory, literacy studies, and (dis)ability studies, I assert that implementing small, organic, and tactical changes though the principles of Universal Design for Learning allows the prison educator to make impactful moves with liberatory goals. I conclude by reimagining what a prison education mission statement that takes this perspective looks like then imagine the liberatory applications of the principles of universal design for learning within the prison.

"I Just Got Out; I Need A Place To Live": A Business Plan For Transitional Housing, Walker Beverly V Dec 2018

"I Just Got Out; I Need A Place To Live": A Business Plan For Transitional Housing, Walker Beverly V

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The United States has a serious epidemic of mass incarceration and high recidivism rates. The U. S. must act on these high recidivism rates by implementing social services programs that help the formerly incarcerated stop committing crimes. The formerly incarcerated are being oppressed by a historic process that has continued to incarcerate and control them, even after they had served their time for their crimes. This project attempts to assist in reducing the high recidivism rates by creating an education-based transitional housing facility with a plethora of supportive services that will be open to formerly incarcerated individuals. This project sheds …
