The Impact Of Racist Communication Practices (Rcp) On A Formerly Incarcerated Student Before, During, And After Prison, George Zaragoza
The Impact Of Racist Communication Practices (Rcp) On A Formerly Incarcerated Student Before, During, And After Prison, George Zaragoza
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Throughout this study I will discuss my personal experiences in the K-12 education system focusing on racist communication practices (RCP) that pushed me towards the school-to-prison-pipeline. My case is but a microscopic sample of what has been done to many incarcerated youths. Through a critical ethnographical approach, I will analyze my experiences by applying a lens in critical race theory to further explore how RCP impacted my transitions from school into incarceration and how these practices continued to follow me into higher education. This study includes an overview of the impact that punitive inhumane practices, particularly long-term solitary confinement had …

Communication Apprehension: A Pressing Matter For Students, A Project Addressing Unique Needs Using Communication In The Discipline Workshops, Brenda L. Rombalski
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Speaking skills are one of the most desired outcomes for university students. Competent communicators have more opportunities for professional development and upward mobility. On the other hand, research shows that several types of communication are on the "greatest fears" list for a majority. This project contains six one-hour workshops to help reduce communication apprehension. Communication apprehension (CA) is the concept; Communication in the Disciplines (CID) is the theoretical foundation, applied to this project. Researchers expect to see a rise in communication fears, Nevertheless, these workshops are timeless and pragmatic, each contributes to reducing communication apprehension by teaching strategies to …

The Loudest Voice In The Room Is Our Silence: Narrative Possibilities Of Silenced Adults, Rebeccah Avila
The Loudest Voice In The Room Is Our Silence: Narrative Possibilities Of Silenced Adults, Rebeccah Avila
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Using muted group theory and communication privacy management theory as the theoretical framework, a deeper examination of adults who have experienced a childhood traumatic experience who now exhibit silencing behaviors as adults will be reviewed. Adults who were victims of childhood trauma were interviewed to listen for the themes in their narratives and how they make sense of why they participate in self-silencing behaviors. For this study, I am interested in examining two main ideas revolving around the phenomena of silence: (1) how do childhood traumatic experiences affect adults; and (2) how do adults make sense of how and why …

Incarceration Effects On Attaining Higher Education For Formerly Incarcerated Youth, Francey Oliva, Daniela Garcia Robledo
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Incarceration disrupts areas of a juvenile’s life on multiple levels, including personal, social, and educational. Incarceration can present many obstacles for youth who are in pursuit of furthering their education. This research project sought to assess if the five identified factors, including quality of precollege education, mentoring, reentry services, family supports, and socioeconomic status, played a role in adults, who were formerly incarcerated youth, pursuing higher levels of education. The study utilized an online survey to gather numerical data on the participant’s perception of how they believe these factors influenced them. A bivariate analysis was used to analyze if the …
Treatment Access For Dual Diagnosis Substance Use And Mental Health Disorders, Pedro Banuelos
Treatment Access For Dual Diagnosis Substance Use And Mental Health Disorders, Pedro Banuelos
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
In 2018, of 1.3 million Latinx adults in the United States facing concurrent issues with substance use disorders (SUD) and mental health disorders (MHD) 93% remained untreated for either diagnosis. This is concerning since Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) data reveals that this population is at greater risk for suicidal thoughts, plans, and attempts. They also face structural barriers such as employment, housing, legal involvement, and insurability that further impede access to treatment.
This study’s purpose was to examine barriers to accessing treatment for Latinx populations confronting co-occurring SUDs and MHDs. This study used a qualitative design …

Using a quantitative method, the researchers found statistically significant differences between the utilization of services from the 2015-2016 fiscal year to that of 2019-2020. Additionally, the researchers provided implications and recommendations. The …

Barriers To Housing Faced By Transitional Age Foster Youth When Transitioning Out Of Care, Taryn Cronkite
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This study examines current barriers to stable housing, as well as gaps within the social service system, that hinder transitional age foster youth from obtaining stable housing after exiting extended foster care. This study is relevant to the social work profession due to overrepresented number of youth in the foster system and a need for services to reduce their chance of homelessness once aging out. The barriers found in this study were identified by the researcher through the interviews with both professionals working with this population, as well as transitional age foster youth themselves. Maximum variation was achieved with the …
