Community Awareness Of Domestic Violence In Arumeru District, Arusha, Tanzania, Rehema John Magesa Jun 2024

Community Awareness Of Domestic Violence In Arumeru District, Arusha, Tanzania, Rehema John Magesa

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

Domestic violence continues to be prominent among many communities worldwide despite different efforts and strategies geared towards eradicating it. Women and girls are among the main victims of this violence. Lack of or limited awareness of the problem perpetuates the problem. However, much of the levels of awareness of the problem are lacking. This study aimed to establish community awareness of domestic violence and the levels of awareness and determine the association between respondents' characteristics and the level of awareness of gender-based violence. The study employed both probability and non-probability sampling techniques to acquire the respondents. One hundred women and …

America, Dreaming., Sarah Meftah Jun 2024

America, Dreaming., Sarah Meftah

Masters Theses

There is a version

of America

that exists

only in dreams,

a kind of folklore,

shrouded in images,

technicolor interiors,

wrapped in plastic,

ghosts of recent past

to haunt and guide;

a constant reminder.

Wishful thinking

a constructed imaginary,

one I can hold in my hand.

Popular culture and spectacle, America and the domestic ideal, capitalism and the collective unconscious of a national identity. As an artist, I am interested in the myriad images that manifest for a viewer when they think of the spectacle of American pop culture, its domestic archetypes, and the material worship it revolves around. My …

Milpa: Cultivating Community Through Grid Remediation In México, Marianna Pasaret Molinar Jun 2024

Milpa: Cultivating Community Through Grid Remediation In México, Marianna Pasaret Molinar

Masters Theses

In México, the proliferation of monotonous affordable housing developments on the outskirts of urban centers stems from a profit- driven approach that prioritizes rapid construction over livability and community well-being. These housing developments, stark rows of barren husks, reflect a system that depletes both land and human connection. Abandoned units — consequences of a patchwork (or non existent) infrastructure —now stand as silent critiques of this broken system.

Drawing inspiration from the cycical strategies of ancestral agricultural traditions, that recognize the full spectrum from barren stalk to abundance, this project proposes a cyclical model for community growth. Current housing practices, …

Naturalistic Assessment Of Reaction Time Variability In Older Adults At Risk For Alzheimer's Disease, Matthew S Welhaf, Hannah Wilks, Andrew J Aschenbrenner, David A Balota, Suzanne E Schindler, Tammie L S Benzinger, Brian A Gordon, Carlos Cruchaga, Chengjie Xiong, John C Morris, Jason Hassenstab

2020-Current year OA Pubs

OBJECTIVE: Maintaining attention underlies many aspects of cognition and becomes compromised early in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease (AD). The consistency of maintaining attention can be measured with reaction time (RT) variability. Previous work has focused on measuring such fluctuations during in-clinic testing, but recent developments in remote, smartphone-based cognitive assessments can allow one to test if these fluctuations in attention are evident in naturalistic settings and if they are sensitive to traditional clinical and cognitive markers of AD.

METHOD: Three hundred and seventy older adults (aged 75.8 +/- 5.8 years) completed a week of remote daily testing on the …

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

As the world is facing challenges such as pandemics, climate change, conflicts, and changing political landscapes, the need to secure access to safe and high-quality abortion care is more urgent than ever. On 27th of June 2023, the Swedish government decided to cut funding resources available for developmental research, which has played a fundamental role in the advancement of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) globally, including abortion care. Withdrawal of this funding not only threatens the fulfilment of the United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGS) – target 3.7 on ensuring universal access to SRHR and target 5 on …

Gathering Gardens: Identifying Land For Community Gardens In Portland, Aswatha Raghunathasam, Gail Chastain, Alan De Anda-Hall, Tyler Smith, Elias Peters

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

The project’s ultimate goal was to create at least 5 new community garden sites in the city of Portland for people to grow their own culturally relevant foods. To focus on parts of the city with some of the highest equity and food security needs, Agate chose to narrow the project scope to neighborhood areas located east of SE 57th Ave. Through direct engagement with the community, the team developed a site inventory for new potential community garden locations, as well as recommendations for optimal garden management, inclusion, and longevity. The community gardens are expected to be established by APANO …

A Spiritual Direction Approach Aimed At Creating Belonging On Campus, Michael Dante May 2024

A Spiritual Direction Approach Aimed At Creating Belonging On Campus, Michael Dante

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Abstract:

Creating a campus culture of belonging is mission critical for Jesuit institutions. This is even more heightened with the recent Supreme Court decision eliminating Affirmative Action and numerous states banning the teaching of history especially around race. To overcome these setbacks and the larger negative effects of racism and white privilege, many of our schools offer trainings, book discussions, and dialogues. These have been very helpful.

Yet, another untapped dimension to racism and white privilege occurs at a spiritual level. Mission Officers, DEI Officers, Rectors of Jesuit communities, and spiritual directors can collaborate to engage this level of the …

Transportation Access And Social Inclusion In College Students, Chasity Phillips, Allison Davis, Oliver Rahn, Kerstyn Rader May 2024

Transportation Access And Social Inclusion In College Students, Chasity Phillips, Allison Davis, Oliver Rahn, Kerstyn Rader

UTC Spring Research and Arts Conference

The prevalence of social isolation in the United States is rising due to such disparate causes as COVID-19, increases in the cost of living, and the introduction of new technologies (Kannan & Veazie, 2023). Although experiencing social support and inclusion during the college years contributes importantly to young adults’ feeling valued, loved, and belonging to a community (Arslan et al, 2018), young adults in college are reported to be one of the highest-risk populations for depression, social isolation, and mental health issues (Elliott, 2021). The nationwide Healthy Minds Survey found that two-thirds of nearly 33,000 students surveyed at schools around …

The Stifling Statute Of Limitations: The Historical Roots And Tragic Implications Of The United States’ Statute Of Limitations—And Evan Rachel Wood’S Daring Fight To Change It, Daley Culberson May 2024

The Stifling Statute Of Limitations: The Historical Roots And Tragic Implications Of The United States’ Statute Of Limitations—And Evan Rachel Wood’S Daring Fight To Change It, Daley Culberson

UTC Spring Research and Arts Conference

In November of 2016, actress and activist Evan Rachel Wood brought forth sexual abuse and assault allegations against her former boyfriend, Brian Hugh Warner (a rock singer professionally known as Marilyn Manson). Despite significant evidence of abuse, prosecutors were not able to file any formal charges against Warner for his alleged crimes against Wood. Wood’s allegations have revealed a deep-rooted issue in America's criminal justice system: the statute of limitations prevents many victims from pressing charges and receiving fair trials against their abusers. This research study analyzes the historical roots of the statute of limitations, its multitude of consequences, and …

Overcoming The Bottlenecks In Teaching Psychological Statistics, Lisa J. Elliott, Joan Middendorf May 2024

Overcoming The Bottlenecks In Teaching Psychological Statistics, Lisa J. Elliott, Joan Middendorf

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Teaching and learning undergraduate statistics has been a most challenging task for undergraduate psychology majors (Salkind, 2017). A seasoned statistics instructor consulted with a seasoned instructional designer on a method to improve a particularly demanding course using a performance improvement approach to address learning difficulties she had noted in previous semesters. The Decoding the Disciplines methodology identified the most challenging concepts and provided a methodology to improve student learning performance. The methodology focused on five core concepts in psychological statistics: probability, variability, central limit theorem, independent/ dependent variables, and degrees of freedom. The Decoding the Disciplines curriculum was used for …

“It’S Pedagogical And It’S Selfish”: How Classroom Policies Promote Inclusive Pedagogy, Student Success, And Faculty Legitimacy, Ellen M. Whitehead, Mellisa Holtzman May 2024

“It’S Pedagogical And It’S Selfish”: How Classroom Policies Promote Inclusive Pedagogy, Student Success, And Faculty Legitimacy, Ellen M. Whitehead, Mellisa Holtzman

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Course policies around attendance and submission deadlines have documented impacts on student outcomes within college courses, yet our understanding remains limited of instructors’ own motivations behind the policies they adopt. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 43 college instructors, we find that faculty emphasize both student-centered and instructor-focused considerations. Pedagogically, they create policies they believe will enhance student success, promote equity and inclusion, and enable students to account for the realities of life. But they also design policies they believe will make their job easier, positively impact students’ perceptions of them, and align with gender role and tenure expectations. These findings …

Teaching, Learning, And Praxis: A Critical Inquiry On Graduate Student Research Apprenticeship Opportunities In Qualitative Research, Alexander G-J Pittman, Maretha Dellarosa, Penny A. Pasque, Myung-Jin Kim, Spencer J. Smith

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

This study employed a critical inquiry paradigm to explore the significance of equity and social justice in teaching qualitative methodologies and methods to graduate students. Graduate students of multiple minoritized identities and a faculty member conducted a two-year inquiry into the research apprenticeship experience, including the stages of student-led conceptualization, data collection, analysis, international conference presentation, and publication. The study investigated the experiences of the faculty and students as well as the responsibilities of the institution against the backdrop of historical and contemporary pandemics. Consequently, we problematized hidden curriculum and unconscious assumptions to suggest research course design sequencing improvements. The …

What Brought Us Together To Form A Community For Scholarship, Carolyn J. Loveridge, Frances Docherty, Sarah Honeychurch, Nathalie Tasler, Linnea Soler, Lindsey Pope, Victoria E. Price, Beth Dickson

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

We are a group of teaching-focused academics who share a passion for learning, teaching and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in Higher Education (HE). In order to understand how practitioners from a diversity of backgrounds and disciplines came to be in their present LTS (Learning, Teaching & Scholarship) academic roles, we embarked on a Collaborative Autoethnography (CAE). This approach allowed us to use our personal narratives to explore what it means to be a SoTL practitioner in HE, and to analyse these narratives by using textual analysis.

This paper unpacks these narratives, focusing on three themes: our rich …

Monogamy, Who? Cheating In The Animal Kingdom, Madison Roberts May 2024

Monogamy, Who? Cheating In The Animal Kingdom, Madison Roberts

UTC Spring Research and Arts Conference

Animal social systems have four interrelated components, two of which are social organization and the mating system. One way to represent the mating system is through multiple paternity, which is defined as the percentage of litters with more than one father. This research project looks at variables that might influence multiple paternity including evolutionary relationships, litter size, female body mass, sexual size dimorphism, and male social organization. Results support the literature that multiple paternity increases with increasing litter size. While not significant, multi-male groups seem to have more influence on multiple paternity than other male social organization groups. Lastly, there …

Inhibited Intentionality And The Docile Imaginations Of Women, Sydney Taylor May 2024

Inhibited Intentionality And The Docile Imaginations Of Women, Sydney Taylor

UTC Spring Research and Arts Conference

This paper explores the nature of women's extension in rigorous conversational settings, such as an academic or professional settings. Even in a society where women have more educational and economic opportunities than ever before, there remains the concerning phenomena of women not extending themselves in conversation in the way that men do. The author contends that women's minds exist within the embodied experience of being female, and therefore of being objectified, because the imagination is subject to similar disciplinary measures as Bartky identifies as disciplining the female body.

Cyberbullying Detection On Twitter Data Using Machine Learning Classifiers, Pradip Dhakal May 2024

Cyberbullying Detection On Twitter Data Using Machine Learning Classifiers, Pradip Dhakal

Data Science and Data Mining

This study compares some of the popular machine learning techniques like Logistic Regression, Multinomial Naive Bayes, K-Nearest Neighbor, and Extreme Gradient Boosting to classify the tweets into three different categories: cyberbullying based on religion, cyberbullying based on ethnicity, or no cyberbullying. First, various data-cleaning approaches are used to clean the tweet data. After the data is clean and ready, the word embedding techniques, such as a bag of words and term frequency-Inverse document frequency, are used to convert the words into mathematical vectors. Finally, the model will be fitted using the combination of the above-mentioned word embedding techniques and machine …

Propagating Conviviality: Waiwai Cultural Transformation Of Moral Depravity, George F. Mentore May 2024

Propagating Conviviality: Waiwai Cultural Transformation Of Moral Depravity, George F. Mentore

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This essay considers the problematics of anthropological translations when its responsibility to the codes of its modernist subjectivity persuades us to defer judgment on interpretations made of indigenous semiotics of life. It begins with this full disclosure before attempting to describe, from a translation of a Waiwai myth, how one can produce a guilty reading about their privileging of concern for conviviality. The Waiwai bodily feeling of well-being must be in place before relations of trust can be enacted. Transforming the vial aggressive feelings of strangers becomes a priority for hosting them. Maintaining feelings of conviviality within the community is …

Povos Indígenas Nas Guianas: Etnografias Contemporâneas, Luísa G. Girardi, Leonor Valentino, Virgínia Amaral

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Indigenous Peoples In The Guianas: Contemporary Ethnographies, Luísa G. Girardi, Leonor Valentino, Virgínia Amaral

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

In the introduction to this special issue of Tipití, dedicated to recent ethnographies conducted among indigenous peoples in Guianese Amazonia, we offer an overview of the main anthropological traditions that have placed the region at the center of debates in Amazonianist ethnology. Alternatively defined as a "linguistic area," "cultural area," or "ethnographic area," the Guianas region is shared by indigenous collectives of the Cariban family and, to a lesser extent, Arawak, Tupi, Yanomami, Sáliva, and Warao-speaking groups, and is associated with some of the monographs that inaugurated the modern period of ethnological reflection on kinship in Amazonia, as well as …

Kita Vai À Kwamalasamutu, Fabio Ribeiro May 2024

Kita Vai À Kwamalasamutu, Fabio Ribeiro

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
