Corn Phenology Influences Diabrotica Virgifera Virgifera Emigration And Visitation To Soybean In, Matthew E. O'Neal, D. A. Landis, J. R. Miller Feb 2004

Corn Phenology Influences Diabrotica Virgifera Virgifera Emigration And Visitation To Soybean In, Matthew E. O'Neal, D. A. Landis, J. R. Miller

Matthew E. O'Neal

We used two types of laboratory apparatus to test whether rotation-resistant and wild-type Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) responded differently to corn phenology. Beetles from Nebraska where injury to rotated corn has not been reported were defined as wild type, and beetles from Illinois where injury to rotated corn is common represented “rotation-resistant“ populations. A two-chamber emigration arena assayed propensity of both populations to leave corn during and after anthesis. A side-arm olfactometer tested whether the relative attraction of beetles to soybean versus corn was influenced by corn phenology. Beetle origin did not influence departure from corn of varying …

Imported Longhorned Weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Injury To Soybean: Physiological Response And Injury Guild-Level Economic Injury Levels, Thomas E. Hunt, Leon G. Higley, Fikru J. Haile

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The imported longhorned weevil, Calomycterus setarius Roelofs, is an occasional pest of soybean, Glycine max (L.), and can cause substantial defoliation of seedling soybean when the weevil is present in large numbers. Because weevil populations can reach high levels, the potential exists for significant seedling injury, so economic injury levels (EILs) are needed for imported longhorned weevil on seedling soybean. Because the bean leaf beetle, Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster), also is present on seedling soybean, injury by this insect should be included in EIL calculations. This study was conducted to (1) determine daily soybean consumption rates of imported longhorned weevil; (2) …

The Probabilistic Economic Injury Level: Incorporating Uncertainty Into Pest Management Decision-Making, Robert K. D. Peterson, Thomas E. Hunt Jan 2003

The Probabilistic Economic Injury Level: Incorporating Uncertainty Into Pest Management Decision-Making, Robert K. D. Peterson, Thomas E. Hunt

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Despite the recognition that the economic injury level (EIL) is determined by dynamic biological and economic parameters, which can be highly variable and uncertain, there has been little effort to quantify uncertainty and to use estimates of uncertainty in the determination of EILs. In this paper, we define the probabilistic EIL (PEIL) and develop PEILs for two insect pest scenarios: alfalfa weevil larvae, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal), on early bud-stage alfalfa, and bean leaf beetle adults, Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster), on V1-stage soybean. The PEIL is an EIL that reflects its probability of occurrence. The probability of occurrence is determined by incorporating …

An Inexpensive, Accurate Method For Measuring Leaf Area And Defoliation Through Digital Image Analysis, Matthew E. O'Neal, Douglas A. Landis, Rufus Isaacs

Matthew E. O'Neal

We report a protocol using a common desk-top scanner and public domain software for measuring existing leaf area and leaf area removed as a result of herbivory. We compared the accuracy and precision of this method to that of a standard leaf area meter. Both methods were used to measure metal disks of a known area, the area of soybean (Glycine max L.) leaves, and the area removed by simulating leaf feeding with a hole-punch. We varied the amount of injury across a low, medium, and high degree of simulated feeding. The mean area of 10 cm2 and 50 cm2 …

Lnduced Resistance To Bean Leaf Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) In Soybean, P. Srinivas, Stephen D. Danielson, C. Michael Smith, John E. Foster Oct 2001

Lnduced Resistance To Bean Leaf Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) In Soybean, P. Srinivas, Stephen D. Danielson, C. Michael Smith, John E. Foster

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Induced resistance in soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, to the bean leaf beetle, Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster), was investigated in greenhouse experiments using the treatments of mechanical injury, a chemical inducer (ActigardrM, Novartis Crop Protection lnc., Greensboro, NC) and defoliation by the bean leaf beetle and the soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker). Experiments were conducted on soybean Pl 227687, two soybean cultivars (Colfax and Williams 82) and a soybean germplasm line (HC95-24MB). Dual-choice feeding-preference tests with bean leaf beetle adults were used to assess induced resistance. Adult beetles were collected from soybean fields 2 to 5 d prior to the feeding …

Cross-Resistance And Resistance Longevity As Induced By Bean Leaf Beetle, Cerotoma Trifurcata And Soybean Looper, Pseudoplusia Includens Herbivory On Soybean, P. Srinivas, Stephen D. Danielson, C. Michael Smith, John E. Foster Jan 2001

Cross-Resistance And Resistance Longevity As Induced By Bean Leaf Beetle, Cerotoma Trifurcata And Soybean Looper, Pseudoplusia Includens Herbivory On Soybean, P. Srinivas, Stephen D. Danielson, C. Michael Smith, John E. Foster

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Cross-resistance, and longevity of resistance, induced by the bean leaf beetle, Cerotoma trifurcata, was studied IN the soybean PI 227687 that exhibited induced response in earlier studies. Bean leaf beetle adults and soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens, larvae were used to induce resistance and to determine beetle feeding preference. Beetles were collected from soybean fields 2 to 5 days prior to the feeding preference test. The level of cross-resistance induced by soybean looper herbivory to subsequent bean leaf beetle feeding was higher when compared to cross-resistance induced by bean leaf beetle herbivory against subsequent feeding by soybean looper. Further, …

Effect Of The Chemical Inducer Actigard™ In Inducing Resistance To Bean Leaf Beetle, Cerotoma Trifurcata (Forster) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Feeding In Soybean, Parimi Srinivas, Stephen D. Danielson Jan 2001

Effect Of The Chemical Inducer Actigard™ In Inducing Resistance To Bean Leaf Beetle, Cerotoma Trifurcata (Forster) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Feeding In Soybean, Parimi Srinivas, Stephen D. Danielson

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Induced resistance in soybean was investigated in the greenhouse using different concentrations of the chemical inducer Actigard™ to determine the influence on feeding preference of bean leaf beetle adults. Treatments of 0 (control), 15, 25, 40, 60, and 80 ppm Actigard™, and artificial defoliation followed by 25 ppm Actigard™ were applied to V1 and V6 stages of soybean plants. Dual-choice feeding preference tests with the bean leaf beetle were used to assess induced resistance. The adult beetles were collected from soybean fields in east central Nebraska 2 to 5 days prior to the feeding preference tests. Pair-wise comparisons of leaflets …

Assessment of soybean seed quality in relation to the damage caused by Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood, 1837) (Hemiptera, Pentatornidae) at various infestation levels and at diferent stages of soybean development (Glycine max (L.) Merrill). Stinkbug effect on soybean seed quality was studied. Field tests were carried out in Guaiba, Rio Grande do Sul, 1974/75. Soybean plants were artificially infested at various densities of Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood, 1837) per 0.5m of row and at different stages of soybean development by means of isolation cages. Stinkbug infestations restricted from full bloom up to the beginning of pod formation do not result in …
