Parent Education Seminar: Children's Emotional Development, Barbara E. Kase

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The purpose of this project was to examine how attachment theory and emotional reactivity intersect in emotional regulation and to develop an educational seminar that increases parent/caregiver's awareness of behaviors that shape a child's emotional development. Attachment is an emotional connection between the parent/caregiver and child that alleviates the child's wariness and stress. Parent/caregiver and infant interactions form attachment patterns that: (a) describe the parent's response to the child's emotional reactivity, (b) result in relational styles, and (c) affect the quality of the emotional connection between them. The quality of the attachment affects the child's emotional development and influences the …

Standardized Testing: Are The Benefits Really There?, Alan D. Foster May 2008

Standardized Testing: Are The Benefits Really There?, Alan D. Foster

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The proponents of standardized high-stakes testing argue that this type of assessment will and does promote increased knowledge acquisition by students. The opponents of this testing claim any apparent knowledge increase as measured by improvements in tests scores are mainly due to teaching to the test. This study was done to determine whether high-stakes testing does in fact improve the knowledge of the students. Data from two national college entrance examinations were collected and reviewed changes over time as reference to knowledge improvements. Test scores from three state high-stakes tests were collected (California, Texas, and Colorado). The scores from the …

Planning Effective School Field Trips For Elementary Students, Marcella Sidars Apr 2008

Planning Effective School Field Trips For Elementary Students, Marcella Sidars

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Field trips for elementary school students are valuable contributors towards improved learning, motivation, and student social interactions. Unfortunately, they are often underutilized in the support of student learning due to several factors: often teachers do not know how to use field trips to their best advantage, often planning field trips is time consuming and difficult, teachers are pressured to justify field trips in terms of links to measurable educational standards, and preservice teachers seldom are instructed in their effective use. To address these concerns, a guidebook for preservice and current teachers has been developed. In it, research based teaching strategies …

Controlling Information Technology Costs And Reporting Roi In Large Organizations, Darrell Jones Feb 2008

Controlling Information Technology Costs And Reporting Roi In Large Organizations, Darrell Jones

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Controlling the cost of information technology (IT) and reporting return on investment in such technologies in large organizations has long been problematic because IT is a significant cost center that in most companies does not contribute directly to the generation of revenue. At the same time, the services provided by IT departments directly affect the bottom lines of modern companies and provide valuable efficiencies. Measuring and reporting the effects of those efficiencies has been hampered by two fairly typical shortcomings of IT managers. IT managers whose primary training is in their own discipline tend to view technology issues in terms …

Designing And Implementing A Backup And Recovery System For Kentucky's Cooperative Extension Service, Wesley G. Justice

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This project proposes the development and proof of concept implementation of a comprehensive backup and recovery plan for Kentucky's Cooperative Extension Service. Currently, no standardized backup system is in place. Each CES office location contains between five and forty Windows based workstations and at least one server, and backup methods vary from office to office. Current backup processes are inadequate in several key areas. To ensure the availability and integrity of mission critical data, the goal of this project is the analysis, design, and implementation of a standardized backup and recovery plan. The project will consider multiple hardware and software …

The paper presents the current implementation steps for a new GJXDM document and describes the process of implementing an existing GJXDM document. The paper also presents a tool for agencies to start using and processing GJXDM documents. Also offered within the paper is a design for a central repository for increasing GJXDM information sharing and dissemination of …

A Business Continuity Solution For Telecommunications Billing Systems, Andrew Mccormack

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The billing system is a critical component in a Telecommunications service provider's suite of business support systems - without the billing system the provider cannot invoice their customers for services provided and therefore cannot generate revenue. Typically billing systems are hosted on a single large Unix/Oracle system located in the company's data centre. Modern Unix servers with their redundant components and hot swap parts are highly resilient and can provide levels of availability when correctly installed in properly managed data centre with uninterruptible power supplies, cooling etc. High Availability clustering through the use of HP MC/ServiceGuard, Sun Cluster, IBM HACMP …

Self-Determination Theory: Increasing Motivation In Middle School Students, Mary I. Morrow Jan 2008

Self-Determination Theory: Increasing Motivation In Middle School Students, Mary I. Morrow

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Self-Determination Theory: Increasing Motivation in Middle School Students Research shows that motivation declines when students enter middle school. Because of this, middle school teachers face the difficult challenge of motivating their students to learn. Although intrinsic motivation results in higher conceptual learning, not all activities in a classroom are intrinsically motivated. Self-Determination Theorists propose that through the process of internalization, students' motivation towards extrinsically motivated activities could reach levels in which the behavioral qualities are comparable to those of intrinsic motivation. The internalization process is dependent on environmental supports for autonomy, competence, relatedness, and task relevance. A handbook based on …

Classroom Management Preparation And New Teacher Retention, Michele Deats

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Many factors affect student achievement, however, an effective teacher has been found to be the most influential. A prerequisite of an effective teacher is the ability to manage his or her classroom. However, due to the high rate of attrition of teachers within the first five years of service, coupled with the paucity of the training, and time it takes to learn to effectively manage a classroom, often student achievement suffers. Because authors of many studies have found that new teachers cite student discipline problems and lack of classroom management preparation as major factors for their attrition, this author created …

Some researchers believe that the lack of mathematics achievement may negatively affect technological developments and the standard of living in the U.S. One particularly promising technique may be the infusion of technology into mathematics classrooms. The proper use of technology may …

Information Sharing Solutions For Nato Headquarters, Wade Alarie Jan 2008

Information Sharing Solutions For Nato Headquarters, Wade Alarie

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

NATO is an Alliance of 26 nations that operates on a consensus basis, not a majority basis. Thorough and timely information exchange between nations is fundamental to the Business Process. Current technology and practices at NATO HQ are inadequate to meet modern-day requirements despite the availability of demonstrated and accredited Cross-Domain technology solutions. This lack of integration between networks is getting more complicated with time, as nations continue to invest in IT and ignore the requirements for inter-networked gateways. This contributes to inefficiencies, fostering an atmosphere where shortcuts are taken in order to get the job done. The author recommends …
