The Life Cycle Of Crassiphiala Bulboglossa (Trematoda: Strgeida): Development Of The Metacercaria And Cyst, And Effect On The Fish Hosts, Glenn L. Hoffman

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

The adult of Crassiphiala bulboglossa was described by Van Haitsma (1925) from the kingfisher, Ceryle alcycon. It can be differentiated from Uvulifer ambloplitis (Hughes, 1927), apparently its closest relative in North America, by the presence of a large bulbous holdfast occupying most of a cup-shaped forebody, and the absence of a ventral sucker. In U. ambloplitis the holdfast is small, the forebody is not cupped, and a ventral sucker is present. These species can be readily identified with the keys given by Dubois (1953).

C. Fair Brooks, Preston W. Doyle

Honors Theses

"The wheel was the crowning achievement of prehistoric carpentry..." Since the discovery of the wheel and its part in revolutionizing transportation for the individual, it has been destined to play a leading role in transportation as an industry.

At the conclusion of the Civil War the era was marked by expansion in industry and agriculture. This expansion was possible through transportation. At the front was the railroad, but the horse and wagon method of transport was behind the scenes, playing an active role, and destined to rise to the front with the introduction of the combustion engine.

In the South, …

"You can't force the issue." "Force will do more harm than good." "You defeat the very cause for which you are working when you use force." Expressions of this kind represent the reaction of many people when one tries to espouse the cause of minority groups. The assumption is, of course, that force is being used, a force that is not only harmful to the cause but also of an illegal and rebellious nature and, in the realm of the Church, contrary to an evangelical approach.

Fourteen-year-old Emmett Louis Till, whose father was in the United States armed forces in World War II, had been sent by his mother from Chicago to Sumner, Mississippi, to spend a vacation with her uncle, Mose Wright. At 2 a.m. August 28, 1955, two men came to the home of Mr. Wright and at pistol point demanded that the boy go with them. Three days later a corpse was found in the nearby Tallahatchie River. It was identified as the body of Emmett Till. The victim had been beaten, shot, tied to a weight, and dropped into the river.

How soon and how fast shall one move in working for the complete elimination of racial prejudice and discrimination? Those who are interested in this question will no doubt welcome reading what The Christian Century had to say on this subject in the September 26 issue. With the permission of the Editorial Secretary, we are quoting extensively from this article entitled "The Faith that Keeps Mountains from Moving.''

Tannin Content Of English Walnuts : Thesis ..., Joseph G. Natoli Jan 1956

Tannin Content Of English Walnuts : Thesis ..., Joseph G. Natoli

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Present methods for the production of leather from animal hides still depend from the most part on the use of natural tannin extracts. During the year, 1952, the amount of natural tannin extracts used by the leather industry was 560,452,119 pounds as compared to 35,793,000 pounds of synthetic tanning materials. It is not as yet possible to produce synthetic materials as economically as the natural extracts; the result being that there is still a very great demand for natural tannin extracts. The need for finding new domestic sources of tannins is apparent when the amounts of domestic and imported extracts …

The Effects Of Structural Changes On The Formation Of Urea Adducts Of Esters, Gerard Vinton Smith Jan 1956

The Effects Of Structural Changes On The Formation Of Urea Adducts Of Esters, Gerard Vinton Smith

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

An unexpected discovery in 1940 revealed that urea has the peculiar property to form crystalline adducts with many straight chain organic compounds. Since the discovery, considerable time and money have been spent on the elucidation of this phenomenon, and the field of urea adducts has now advanced to the stage at which many empirical rules have been observed but, unfortunately, no sound theory has been formulated.

The purpose of this research was to determine the effect, if any, of changes in structure upon the amount of urea required to adduct with esters. The change in structure consisted of changing the …

Textual Evidences For A Reconstruction Of Vedic Culture, Ved Vrat Jan 1956

Textual Evidences For A Reconstruction Of Vedic Culture, Ved Vrat

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Contemporary scholars of Indian philosophy are of the opinion that the Vedas are purely ritualistic. This opinion finds support in the translations and commentaries of Sayanacharya and Mahidhara, on which their scholarship is based. The interpretation of the Vedas by the above mentioned authors is against the root derivatives of the words and antagonistic to the expositions of the various hymns given by the Vedic sages and Riahia. In order to be a valid translation it has to be in conformity with the ideas and derivatives contained in Vedanga, Alteraya, Shatpatha, Brahmans, etc. Sayanacharys says that all the four Vedas …

The Heroes Of Byron: A Study Of Their Origin, Development, And Meaning In The Poetry Of George Gordon, Lord Byron, Robert Lester Thomas

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Lord Byron was very much concerned with the problems of immortality and fame. Perhaps his greatest single theme in poetry is human greatness. An especial aspect of human greatness, namely of heroes in spirit and in action, is, of course, one of the most permanent and best known features of Byron's poetry, the creation of the Byronic hero" being one of the poet's most outstanding contribu- tions to world literature. This study is concerned with all of the heroes Lord Byron created. It is to be a study of their origin, development, and meaning in the poetry of Byron. Lord …

Some Observations On Oral Protozoa Of Man, Howard Edwin Runion

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This investigation is based upon the occurrence of oral protozoans among 25 periodontalclasial patients in Stockton, California. It is concerned, in part, with the correlation of infections with age, sex and oral health of the host and, in part, with culture techniques. The specific cultivation of Trichomonas tenax was explored in an effort to employ an improved experimental medium.

Trichomonas tenax and Endamoeba gingivalis are the only protozoans known to occur commonly in the human mouth. Distribution is cosmopolitan and there are no known endemic areas. Incidence of these two protozoans, among periodontalclasial patients, has not been reported since the …

A Study Of The Hawaiian Statehood Movement, Leslie Gay Knoles Jan 1956

A Study Of The Hawaiian Statehood Movement, Leslie Gay Knoles

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A study of the development of the issues in the Hawaiian statehood controversy reveals the paradoxical fact that, while Americans were promoting the mutual interest of Hawaii and the United States, they were also developing a social, economic, and political atmosphere that has resulted in forces inimical to the consummation of a logical realization of Hawaii’s integration as a state. A knowledge of how Hawaii became linked to the United States, and of the institutions developed in the islands prior to annexation in 1898 is essential to an understanding of the contemporary problem.

A Survey Of Speech Education In The High Schools Of California, Marian Helen Mellgren Jan 1956

A Survey Of Speech Education In The High Schools Of California, Marian Helen Mellgren

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Perhaps the first justification for the inclusion of speech in today’s curriculum is the very evident predominance of oral communication in our lives. Painter has pointed out that “oral communication is the vehicle for 90 percent of the exchange of ideas.”

A second justification for the belief that speech education is important today lies in the fact that our country is a democracy. Democracy is essentially a government by talk, a government in which problems are not settled by force, but in which problems are talked out of existence or into solution. Long ago Aristotle identified communication with political freedom …
