In the wake of school shootings, including Parkland, states and school districts have scrambled to protect against threats. But faced with no federal focus on gun control and little funding, schools have to make tough safety choices. Some have adopted novelty security gadgets; others have discussed arming teachers and even giving children tools to defend themselves. To some, this is the ideal solution; the answer to violence is more violence. And so, some schools are starting to resemble military camps. With reporting from a security conference in Florida, and a military camp for kids in Kentucky, this story takes a …

Essays On The Patient-Centered Medical Home In The United States Military Health System, Glen N. Gilson
Theses & Dissertations
The Patient-Centered Medical Home has been endorsed by the primary care community as the model of the future, with hopes that it will increase quality of care and the patient and provider experience while decreasing costs. Many aspects of the implementation of the Patient-Centered Medical Home model remain unexplored. This dissertation comprises three independent studies examining Patient-Centered Medical Home implementation in the Military Health System, including (1) the effects of environmental correlates on the time to implement the model, (2) the impact of differences in implementation on preventive care quality outcomes, and (3) the effect of differences in implementation on …
Gender Similarities And Differences In Military Sexual Trauma, Megan A. Boehning
Gender Similarities And Differences In Military Sexual Trauma, Megan A. Boehning
Honors Capstones
While treatment and knowledge of military sexual trauma has improved, there are still issues in understanding MST and how well victims adjust. There are various consequences that affect MST survivor’s lives, including health, psychological, and lifetime implications. Though men and women both face many of the same outcomes of MST, they also endure gender-specific sequela. This manuscript will examine the similarities and differences in barriers, symptoms, and treatment for men and women service members. Much of the research that is presented in this paper includes meta-analyses as well as singular studies. The main demographics in the studies tend to be …
Military Working Dogs In The United States Armed Forces From World War I To Vietnam, Tristan J. Kelly
Military Working Dogs In The United States Armed Forces From World War I To Vietnam, Tristan J. Kelly
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
At the beginning of World War I, the only military working dogs the United States owned were sled dogs. In comparison, European nations in World War I used canines as sentries, messengers, ambulance, and draft dogs. In 1942, members of the American public, created Dogs for Defense Inc. to help recruit dogs for military use. By the end of the Vietnam War, dogs no longer were donated by the American public for use, rather the American military owned the dogs they deployed.
This thesis examines the use of dogs by the American military from World War I to the Vietnam …
Knowledge Of Mental Health Disorders And Resources By Military Personnel, Savanna Taylor
Knowledge Of Mental Health Disorders And Resources By Military Personnel, Savanna Taylor
All Theses
With more soldiers returning home to the United States than any war era before, there is a need for research to understand military personnel’s mental health and how they use resources, like the Veteran’s Affairs and non-profit organizations. This study serves to further our understanding about service members’ knowledge on this subject. This study adds to the literature by conducting semi-structured interviews with 15 service members who had deployed on either United States military bases or ships, or peace-keeping missions, overseas after 9/11. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and thoroughly analyzed using a narrative approach. Five important themes emerged from …
Groundwater Hydrogeolgy And Hydrochemistry Of Karst Springs In The Eastern Peninsula Of Fort Hood Military Installation, William Scribner Welles
Groundwater Hydrogeolgy And Hydrochemistry Of Karst Springs In The Eastern Peninsula Of Fort Hood Military Installation, William Scribner Welles
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The eastern peninsula of Fort Hood Military Installation is underlain by a complex karst spring network. These springs are a primary water source in a protected habitat for endangered songbirds, which has only recently begun to be fully investigated. These Fredericksburg Group springs express both epigenetic and hypogenetic karst signatures. The study area is part of a paleo reef trend, a hydraulically disconnected segment of the northern section of the Edwards Aquifer. This study utilized standard ion index values, repeated measures, and principal component analyses on the chemical profiles of six perennial springs to classify spring water sources and their …
Charting Continuation: Understanding Post-Traditional Six Nations Militarism, 1814-1930, Evan Joseph Habkirk
Charting Continuation: Understanding Post-Traditional Six Nations Militarism, 1814-1930, Evan Joseph Habkirk
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Until recently, military historians failed to consider First Nations military participation beyond the settlement of a particular region, including the end War of 1812 in Ontario and Quebec, and the post-Northwest Rebellion era in the Western Provinces. Current historiography of Six Nations military between the end of the War of 1812 and the First World War has also neglected the evolution of First Nations militarism and the voice of First Nations peoples, with most military histories including First Nations participation as contributions to the larger non-First Nations narrative of Canada. By charting the military participation of one First Nation community, …
Cultural Analysis Of Organizational Development Units: A Comprehensive Approach Based On The Competing Values Framework, Richard Erhardt
Cultural Analysis Of Organizational Development Units: A Comprehensive Approach Based On The Competing Values Framework, Richard Erhardt
Business Administration Dissertations
In analysis of organizational culture much is accomplished at the parent organization level. While there is agreement that culture plays a significant role there is little on analysis and comparison of internal units. Against that backdrop, this research asks how US Air Force units can analyze variations in organizational culture as a basis for considering unit mergers. Specifically, I investigate culture across two organizational development units based on the Competing Values Framework (CVF) to inform understanding of internal cultural variation. Although there are well-established approaches available for CVF analysis based on surveys and documents, there are no approaches that complement …
Marital Satisfaction For Military Couples With A Child Of Autism, Simone R. Deloach
Marital Satisfaction For Military Couples With A Child Of Autism, Simone R. Deloach
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines a phenomenological study of the experiences of military couples who have a child with autism. The research analysis was conducted with Polkinghorne’s (1989) ideas in mind, using a limited number of participants who all share a similar lived experience. The research was carried out with six married couples who are currently serving in the military and have a child with autism. After a brief overview of autism, military families, and marital satisfaction, the research hypothesis of the specific study follows. The present study, therefore, used a qualitative methodology in the form of Creswell’s (2014) definition of phenomenology …

A Military Chronic Pain Interdisciplinary Outpatient Program’S (Iop) Approach To Reducing Pain And Disability And Increasing Functional Ability, Paris N. Mcdonald
USC Aiken Psychology Theses
The present study employed self-report measures to assess pain intensity, self-report perception of disability, and patient activation, and objective functional measures to explore the outcomes of a military interdisciplinary chronic pain intensive outpatient program. Seventy-three Active Duty Service Members (SM) with chronic pain completed baseline measures (pre-IOP) and graduation day measures, 60 SMs completed one-month follow-up measures, and 28 completed three-month follow-up measures. Results indicated that self-report pain levels decreased from pre-IOP to graduation day. The decrease was maintained; however, no additional significant decrease in pain occurred following program completion. Further, participant’s self-reported perception of disability due to back pain …
Determinants Of Well-Being Among Military Caregivers, Ludwig Marcello Martinez
Determinants Of Well-Being Among Military Caregivers, Ludwig Marcello Martinez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although the current body of research in the field of informal caregivers is extensive, this research focuses on the experiences of civilian caregivers. This focus contributes to limited knowledge regarding factors that influence the experiences of individuals who provide care to ill and/or wounded service members. Although limited, this research suggests that military caregivers often experience higher levels of distress when compared to the national average. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between the veteran’s level of disability and dyadic stress on the military caregiver’s overall sense of well-being. Additionally, this study examined the moderating effects of attachment …

This short documentary film is about one man’s ascent, descent and redemption for making an extremely poor personal decision that has impacted his entire adult life. Randall “Duke” Cunningham, 76, is a former U.S. Republican Congressman from California who was sentenced in 2005 to more than eight years in prison for accepting bribes totaling $2.4 million and tax evasion. He was released from an Arizona prison in 2013 and moved to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas because he had a brother and sister-in-law who lived there and they could assist him in getting settled. He said the area was quiet and …
Hormonal Contraceptive Use Among Active Duty Army Servicewomen. Trends And Implications For Risk Of Musculoskeletal Injury., Melanie K. Hosker
Hormonal Contraceptive Use Among Active Duty Army Servicewomen. Trends And Implications For Risk Of Musculoskeletal Injury., Melanie K. Hosker
Doctoral Dissertations
Almost 40% of servicewomen use hormonal contraception every year, and 60% will use a contraceptive method in their military career. Rates of contraceptive use and musculoskeletal injury are higher among servicewomen as compared to civilians. Gender differences in rates of musculoskeletal injury have led investigators to question the role of sex hormones, including contraception. Recent studies suggest that hormonal contraceptives may decreased risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, potentially decreasing early onset osteoarthritis (OA). We utilized the Total Army Injury and Health Outcome Database, which prospectively captured demographics, clinical and pharmacy records on over 5.6 million Army soldiers since …
Military Life, Intersectionality, And Deployment: The Social Experiences And Difficulties Of Mothers Who Stay Behind, Roberto Cancio Jr
Military Life, Intersectionality, And Deployment: The Social Experiences And Difficulties Of Mothers Who Stay Behind, Roberto Cancio Jr
Open Access Dissertations
Studies on the military family are important because it sheds light on the phenomenon of the family, it offers a unique insight into the largest single government employer in the nation, and issues addressed surrounding it can have important implications for the further development of both health and military policy. Prior research on families has consistently found that social relationships, especially close personal relationships, like marriage, have important health consequences. For that reason, understanding the impact of military life on spouses is of great importance. However, most studies have examined spouses individually, rather than concurrently as families. Empirical research has …
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: A Tool For Veteran Reassimilation, Gino L. Collura
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: A Tool For Veteran Reassimilation, Gino L. Collura
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation evaluates veteran participation in the martial art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) as a tool of reassimilation for veterans suffering from anxiety, stress and/or combat PTSD associated with military deployment. From the onset of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation New Dawn, challenges associated with U.S. Veteran assimilation and reintegration have been increasing. Coping with long term displacement, trauma, loss, and making sense of identity shifts between being an active duty service member and civilian can often present challenges when navigating back into civilian life.
By utilizing a neuroanthropological lens, ethnographic inquiry, surveys, semi-structured interviews, and …

“Livin’ The Dream?” How Veterans Of Operations Enduring Freedom And Iraqi Freedom Negotiate The Experience Of Illness As They Transition From Healthy Warrior To Sick Veteran, Jodie L. Sweezey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As combat veterans returned from supporting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, questions over the safety of vaccinations as well as exposure to burn pit smoke and toxic metals lying dormant in the sand emerged. For many, returning home was marred by unexplained symptoms followed by diagnoses of autoimmune diseases and/or cancer. This research examines how these veterans negotiate this transition from healthy to sick struggling with the many forces that interact with this transition. I focused on the lived experience of their illness as it is non-verbally expressed through embodiment, verbally expressed through illness narratives, and negotiated to avoid …
An Invading Army Of Rockettes: How Us Military Policy On Homosexuality And The Voyeurism Of The Vietnam War Era Shaped The Gay Rights Movement, 1956-1969, Marq Schuling
History Theses
This paper seeks to trace the complex attitudes towards homosexuality in the 1960s through the lens of the Vietnam War. I postulate that adopting the cause of protesting the ban on homosexuals in the military, coupled with the expansion of voyeuristic and sensationalized depictions of homosexuals, served to unify the gay community and strengthen homosexual identity. The voyeurism of Vietnam as the “Living Room War” brought the homosexual man out from the shadows, and though homosexuality continued to be considered a marker of mental illness and instability, the desire to see the taboo world of the gay man changed the …

“After-Ozymandias”: The Colonization Of Symbols And The American Monument, H. R. Membreno-Canales
“After-Ozymandias”: The Colonization Of Symbols And The American Monument, H. R. Membreno-Canales
Theses and Dissertations
After-Ozymandias examines the visual rhetoric of American patriotism through its many symbols, including flags and monuments. My thesis project consists of photographs of empty plinths, objects, products and archival materials. Countless relics remain today memorializing leaders and empires that inevitably declined, from antiquity to modern times. Looking back at distant history feels like a luxury, though: the question for our time in America is whether we have the strength of mind as a society to scrutinize our history, warts and all.

The main objective of this thesis is to analyze the cost viability of federal government employees versus military personnel with a focus on the security guards at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. This analysis seeks cost viability from two perspectives. The first perspective is the cost of each personnel to the Army through total compensation value analysis. The second perspective is the cost viability to work as a federal employee versus enlisting in the Army. This perspective was analyzed through gross, disposable, and discretionary income analysis. The analysis was designed to shed light on the disparity in pay between the two types …
Effects Of Stride Length On Lower Limb Stiffness When Running With Body Borne Load, Nick Lobb
Effects Of Stride Length On Lower Limb Stiffness When Running With Body Borne Load, Nick Lobb
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: During military activities, soldiers are often required to run at a fixed cadence with body borne load, but these loads purportedly increase leg stiffness, leading to increased risk of musculoskeletal injury. Yet, to date, it is unknown how altering stride length when running with body borne load affects lower limb stiffness for males and females. Purpose: To quantify leg stiffness, and lower limb joint (hip, knee and ankle) stiffness for males and females using different stride lengths to run with body borne loads of 20 kg, 25 kg, 30 kg, and 35 kg. Methods: Twenty-seven (17 males and 10 …
Egypt's Perilous Journey, David Nguyen
Egypt's Perilous Journey, David Nguyen
Senior Theses
Citizens of the United States have been conditioned to believe that rule by democracy is the most free and fair method of governing. If we hold this to be true, I inquire: why do some postmodern Arab states appear resistant to the spread of democracy within government? In order to fully evaluate the merits of a democratic form of government, it is important to analyze the obstacles that hinder its success. Within this research, the gap that I have identified concerns how the overall quality of a nation’s economy affects its ability to transition to democracy in the Middle East …
