In the wake of school shootings, including Parkland, states and school districts have scrambled to protect against threats. But faced with no federal focus on gun control and little funding, schools have to make tough safety choices. Some have adopted novelty security gadgets; others have discussed arming teachers and even giving children tools to defend themselves. To some, this is the ideal solution; the answer to violence is more violence. And so, some schools are starting to resemble military camps. With reporting from a security conference in Florida, and a military camp for kids in Kentucky, this story takes a …

Essays On The Patient-Centered Medical Home In The United States Military Health System, Glen N. Gilson
Theses & Dissertations
The Patient-Centered Medical Home has been endorsed by the primary care community as the model of the future, with hopes that it will increase quality of care and the patient and provider experience while decreasing costs. Many aspects of the implementation of the Patient-Centered Medical Home model remain unexplored. This dissertation comprises three independent studies examining Patient-Centered Medical Home implementation in the Military Health System, including (1) the effects of environmental correlates on the time to implement the model, (2) the impact of differences in implementation on preventive care quality outcomes, and (3) the effect of differences in implementation on …

Omaha Beach On D-Day: June 6, 1944 With One Of The World's Iconic Photographers, Nicole Clark
Children's Book and Media Review
Equal parts graphic novel, biography, and photo book, Omaha Beach on D-Day tells the story of photographer Robert Capa’s experiences on D-Day. Capa, described by London’s Picture Post as “the greatest war photographer in the world,” was assigned to travel with a unit landing in France on the infamous morning of June 6, 1944. Determined to capture the horror and reality of the beach landing on film, Capa faced heavy gunfire, harsh weather conditions, and mass confusion. The nine remaining photographs from Capa’s experience became some of the most defining photographs of World War II.

Gender Similarities And Differences In Military Sexual Trauma, Megan A. Boehning
Gender Similarities And Differences In Military Sexual Trauma, Megan A. Boehning
Honors Capstones
While treatment and knowledge of military sexual trauma has improved, there are still issues in understanding MST and how well victims adjust. There are various consequences that affect MST survivor’s lives, including health, psychological, and lifetime implications. Though men and women both face many of the same outcomes of MST, they also endure gender-specific sequela. This manuscript will examine the similarities and differences in barriers, symptoms, and treatment for men and women service members. Much of the research that is presented in this paper includes meta-analyses as well as singular studies. The main demographics in the studies tend to be …
Military Working Dogs In The United States Armed Forces From World War I To Vietnam, Tristan J. Kelly
Military Working Dogs In The United States Armed Forces From World War I To Vietnam, Tristan J. Kelly
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
At the beginning of World War I, the only military working dogs the United States owned were sled dogs. In comparison, European nations in World War I used canines as sentries, messengers, ambulance, and draft dogs. In 1942, members of the American public, created Dogs for Defense Inc. to help recruit dogs for military use. By the end of the Vietnam War, dogs no longer were donated by the American public for use, rather the American military owned the dogs they deployed.
This thesis examines the use of dogs by the American military from World War I to the Vietnam …
Knowledge Of Mental Health Disorders And Resources By Military Personnel, Savanna Taylor
Knowledge Of Mental Health Disorders And Resources By Military Personnel, Savanna Taylor
All Theses
With more soldiers returning home to the United States than any war era before, there is a need for research to understand military personnel’s mental health and how they use resources, like the Veteran’s Affairs and non-profit organizations. This study serves to further our understanding about service members’ knowledge on this subject. This study adds to the literature by conducting semi-structured interviews with 15 service members who had deployed on either United States military bases or ships, or peace-keeping missions, overseas after 9/11. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and thoroughly analyzed using a narrative approach. Five important themes emerged from …

Groundwater Hydrogeolgy And Hydrochemistry Of Karst Springs In The Eastern Peninsula Of Fort Hood Military Installation, William Scribner Welles
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The eastern peninsula of Fort Hood Military Installation is underlain by a complex karst spring network. These springs are a primary water source in a protected habitat for endangered songbirds, which has only recently begun to be fully investigated. These Fredericksburg Group springs express both epigenetic and hypogenetic karst signatures. The study area is part of a paleo reef trend, a hydraulically disconnected segment of the northern section of the Edwards Aquifer. This study utilized standard ion index values, repeated measures, and principal component analyses on the chemical profiles of six perennial springs to classify spring water sources and their …

Investigating The Impact Of Differentiated Instruction On Soldier Training, Sara Rebecca Baumgarten
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
As the individuals identified as the Millennial Generation transition into adulthood, postsecondary instructional institutions must adjust training methods for increased learning. This postsecondary institutional transformation is not exclusionary, thus military training must also evolve to increase knowledge acquisition. For soldiers in the unit supply specialist program, training utilized differentiated instruction methods and strategies with an end state of improved learning for soldiers at their first duty station and lasting through the course of their career. This revised learning methodology has increased property accountability as directed by the Command Supply Discipline Program, Department of the Army. Conducting an ANCOVA on Control …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In January 2018, the Department of Defense began the new blended retirement system for military members which includes an investment matching program in addition to a reduced pension at 20 years of service. This new system requires a forward thinking financial decision from a young population of Americans who may not possess substantial financial knowledge and experience to make an educated long term decision. The study examines the financial literacy of two groups of young enlisted Air Force members separated by two years experience in the service to determine if any significant changes in financial literacy occur through time and …

The purpose of this study was to identify and characterise physical performance responses to a targeted 10-week load-carriage physical training intervention in males. Performance measures of maximal strength, heart rate, rating of perceived exertion, and basic fitness from nine male civilians before and after the 10-week training intervention are presented. There were significant increases in maximal force (~200 N) and aerobic performance (Level. Shuttle 8.9 vs 9,4 variables). Small-to-large effect sizes were shown for basic fitness and perceptual responses. The 10-week load-carriage physical training intervention elicited physical performance improvements and may facilitate load-carriage task performance.

Objectives
Despite the general suicide rate within the military being comparable to the general population when comparing peers, there are certain branches of the military that have elevated risk. Specifically, the U.S. National Guard has suicide rates that are constantly higher than other military branches and civilian peers. The National Guard are a unique military population in which they frequently transition between military and civilian life. With these unique experiences and heightened risk, military suicide prevention efforts may benefit from further research within this population. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is another concern amongst military personnel and has been linked to …

Charting Continuation: Understanding Post-Traditional Six Nations Militarism, 1814-1930, Evan Joseph Habkirk
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Until recently, military historians failed to consider First Nations military participation beyond the settlement of a particular region, including the end War of 1812 in Ontario and Quebec, and the post-Northwest Rebellion era in the Western Provinces. Current historiography of Six Nations military between the end of the War of 1812 and the First World War has also neglected the evolution of First Nations militarism and the voice of First Nations peoples, with most military histories including First Nations participation as contributions to the larger non-First Nations narrative of Canada. By charting the military participation of one First Nation community, …
Winning War In A Globalized World: Utilizing Women & Gender Initiatives In 21st Century Conflict, Emerald M. Archer
Winning War In A Globalized World: Utilizing Women & Gender Initiatives In 21st Century Conflict, Emerald M. Archer
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Three thousand years of recorded history has reserved warfighting for men and, in 2017, we continue to rely on ideas of hegemonic masculinity to understand who participates in war. However, women have played a vital role in the context of warfare from its inception. In the twenty-first century, women’s service is critical to the types of conflicts militaries regularly confront – specifically, counter insurgency and peacekeeping operations. The intersection of gender and security today provides new routes to peaceful prosperity globally. Applying gender initiatives to militaries – whether it means creating a gender balanced force, the integration of women into …

"A Worn, Weary, Discontented Look": The Influence Of West Point And The Hudson River Valley On Poe, Gina Clawywell
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
This article argues that the Hudson River Valley—and specifically West Point—influenced Poe's writing and specifically his 1831 Poems dedicated to the U.S. Corps of Cadets. The grandeur of West Point's locale, the mystical nature of the surrounding rocky cliffs, the deep verdant river valley, the "light from out the lurid sea/ Streams up the turrets silently" of the widening river at Trophy Point, and West Point's castellated architecture had a strong impact on Poe. Despite the haunting beauty of the area, Poe, like many cadets who view the scene laid out before them with a jaundiced perspective, knew the "worn, …

The Role Of Institutions, Islamism, And Militaries In The Outcomes Of The Arab Spring: The Cases Of Tunisia, Egypt, And Syria, Olivia Delmonico
Sacred Heart University Scholar
During the Arab Spring in 2011, much of the Middle Eastern world faced a series of uprisings demanding democracy and equality. Most of these attempts at revolution desperately failed, with some nations faring far worse than before. Some, however, remain more stable than others, with Tunisia being the sole full success. This article delves into the varying causes of the uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt, and Syria. These countries respectively represent the good, the bad, and the ugly outcomes of the Arab Spring.
Through a thorough analysis of other literature on the subject, I conclude that the success of modern Arab …

Roman Britain To Germanic England: A Settlement Study Of Military Sites In Northern England From Ad 300 – 600, Bronwynn Meredydd Lloyd
Culture, Society, and Praxis
The Late-Roman/Anglo-Saxon transition has been heavily debated for the last twenty years. A hard and fast line has been drawn between the Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods leaving an impression of a cataclysmic end to the Roman occupation and a forceful takeover by Germanic tribes. Lloyd analyzes in this well researched piece prevalent interpretations of the settlement layout and building construction offered for the military settlements of Catterick, York, and Birdoswald in Northern England. The author contends that to understand the transition it is necessary to pay attention to the development of a distinct Romano-British population that emerged during the period …

Amphibians And Reptiles Of United States Department Of Defense Installations, Christopher E. Petersen, Robert E. Lovich, Sarah Stallings
U.S. Navy Research
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) occupies approximately 10.1 million ha of land within the U.S. spanning most ecosystems contained therein. To date, no comprehensive agency-wide inventory of amphibian and reptile species has been compiled. We developed an amphibian and reptile species inventory for 415 DoD installations/sites and evaluated species diversity. The amphibian and reptile species confirmed present on DoD sites represent 66% of the total native species documented in the continental U.S. Snakes are the most widespread group found on DoD lands. Of the military services, Army sites have the greatest number of confirmed species, federally listed, state-listed, and …

Cultural Analysis Of Organizational Development Units: A Comprehensive Approach Based On The Competing Values Framework, Richard Erhardt
Cultural Analysis Of Organizational Development Units: A Comprehensive Approach Based On The Competing Values Framework, Richard Erhardt
Business Administration Dissertations
In analysis of organizational culture much is accomplished at the parent organization level. While there is agreement that culture plays a significant role there is little on analysis and comparison of internal units. Against that backdrop, this research asks how US Air Force units can analyze variations in organizational culture as a basis for considering unit mergers. Specifically, I investigate culture across two organizational development units based on the Competing Values Framework (CVF) to inform understanding of internal cultural variation. Although there are well-established approaches available for CVF analysis based on surveys and documents, there are no approaches that complement …
Marital Satisfaction For Military Couples With A Child Of Autism, Simone R. Deloach
Marital Satisfaction For Military Couples With A Child Of Autism, Simone R. Deloach
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines a phenomenological study of the experiences of military couples who have a child with autism. The research analysis was conducted with Polkinghorne’s (1989) ideas in mind, using a limited number of participants who all share a similar lived experience. The research was carried out with six married couples who are currently serving in the military and have a child with autism. After a brief overview of autism, military families, and marital satisfaction, the research hypothesis of the specific study follows. The present study, therefore, used a qualitative methodology in the form of Creswell’s (2014) definition of phenomenology …

High-intensity functional training (HIFT) is an exercise modality that emphasizes functional,multi-joint movements that can be modified to any fitness level and elicit greater muscle recruitmentthan more traditional exercise. As a relatively new training modality, HIFT is often compared tohigh-intensity interval training (HIIT), yet the two are distinct. HIIT exercise is characterized byrelatively short bursts of repeated vigorous activity, interspersed by periods of rest or low-intensityexercise for recovery, while HIFT utilizes constantly varied functional exercises and various activitydurations that may or may not incorporate rest. Over the last decade, studies evaluating theeffectiveness of HIIT programs have documented improvements in metabolic and …

A Military Chronic Pain Interdisciplinary Outpatient Program’S (Iop) Approach To Reducing Pain And Disability And Increasing Functional Ability, Paris N. Mcdonald
USC Aiken Psychology Theses
The present study employed self-report measures to assess pain intensity, self-report perception of disability, and patient activation, and objective functional measures to explore the outcomes of a military interdisciplinary chronic pain intensive outpatient program. Seventy-three Active Duty Service Members (SM) with chronic pain completed baseline measures (pre-IOP) and graduation day measures, 60 SMs completed one-month follow-up measures, and 28 completed three-month follow-up measures. Results indicated that self-report pain levels decreased from pre-IOP to graduation day. The decrease was maintained; however, no additional significant decrease in pain occurred following program completion. Further, participant’s self-reported perception of disability due to back pain …
