Wear Regimes And Transitions In Ceramic Particulate-Reinforced Aluminum Alloys., Jie. Zhang Jan 1995

Wear Regimes And Transitions In Ceramic Particulate-Reinforced Aluminum Alloys., Jie. Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this work was to study the dry sliding wear properties of aluminum matrix composites A356Al-SiC, 6061Al-Al$\sb2$O$\sb3$, 2014Al-SiC, with 0-20 pct. volume fraction reinforcement. Experiments were performed with a load range of 1 to 450 N and a sliding velocity range of 0.1 to 5.0 m/s. Two types of counterface materials, namely SAE52100 bearing steel and mullite, were used. Three different wear rate regimes were observed in the composites. These were: (i) regime I (ultra mild wear regime), which occurred at low loads and low sliding velocities, where ceramic particles acted as load bearing elements. In this region …

Women Lawbreakers Constructed In Terms Of Traditional Definitions Of Femininity: The Sentencing Of Women In Conflict With The Law., Catherine Elizabeth. Kaukinen Jan 1995

Women Lawbreakers Constructed In Terms Of Traditional Definitions Of Femininity: The Sentencing Of Women In Conflict With The Law., Catherine Elizabeth. Kaukinen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the considerations judges include in the sentencing of women offenders. In particular, I look at the way the sentencing of women lawbreakers incorporates traditional constructions of femininity. Using a feminist criminological approach, various sentencing strategies were identified in terms of the way in which judges explain women's criminal behaviour and construct motherhood relative to women lawbreakers. These sentencing strategies or judge types are: traditional judges, judges who construct criminal women as "bad" mothers, judges who view motherhood as a non-factor and the "new judges," who attempt to sensitize sentencing to the experiences of women. This research finds …

Women's Representation In Municipal Government., Susan Stella. Ross Jan 1995

Women's Representation In Municipal Government., Susan Stella. Ross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Three major questions are asked in this research regarding women's representation in municipal government in Ontario: Why are there fewer women than men involved in Canadian politics? What factors contribute to this? Do the motivations for running for political office differ between males and females? These questions were answered by first providing a literature review on the relevant literature on women in Canadian politics. A historical look was then taken at women's representation in municipal government in Ontario to decipher if this had an effect on why fewer women run for municipal office in Ontario. Women's representation in municipal government …

Simultaneous Part Family And Machine Cell Formations In Cellular Manufacturing Systems: An Analytical And Algorithmic Approach., A. Alper. Ozdemir

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Increased level of global competition and rapid changes in consumers' tastes have forced the companies to reorganize their manufacturing operations, in a way that they can produce large variety of products, in small quantities, at high quality and at a low competitive price. Cellular Manufacturing Systems have been identified as the key in achieving these objectives. In this research, mathematical programming models are developed for single and multi period planning horizons, respectively. The objective of the models is to minimize the total cost function associated with the design of cellular manufacturing systems, while minimizing exceptional part types and obtaining a …

Software Base For Reuse-Oriented Program Development., Deoraj. Ramjisingh Jan 1995

Software Base For Reuse-Oriented Program Development., Deoraj. Ramjisingh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Software reusability, the construction of systems by the usage of knowledge or artifacts associated with existing systems, has been of significant importance to both engineers and managers. As the reusable software components are growing, we are faced with the dilemma of storing these components so as to allow easy retrieval for reuse. Many multifaceted approaches to automatic retrieval of reusable software components have been devised and implemented. Unfortunately they all fail to place any emphasis on the structuring of the software repository so as to provide for easy retrieval. In this thesis we investigate the problem of structuring the large …

Software Retrieval Based On Semantic Properties., Khaled. Khalil Jan 1995

Software Retrieval Based On Semantic Properties., Khaled. Khalil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Software reuse is the process of using existing software components during the construction of software systems in order to reduce the effort and maintenance of the system. The growth of reuse of software repositories has led to the design of mechanisms to retrieve reusable components. This thesis presents the design and implementation of an automated software retrieval where components can be automatically stored and retrieved using informal partial specification such as semantic properties of functions. Static And Dynamic Responses Of Simply Supported And Continuous Skew Composite Bridges., Tarek Ibrahim. Ebeido Jan 1995

Static And Dynamic Responses Of Simply Supported And Continuous Skew Composite Bridges., Tarek Ibrahim. Ebeido

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The load distribution factor concept allows the design engineer to consider the longitudinal and transverse effects of wheel loads as two separate phenomena and thus simplifying the analysis and design of the bridge. North American codes of practice do not provide the design engineer with sufficient guidance regarding elastic load distribution factors for skew composite bridges. These codes of practice also require a check to be made on the strength of the sections of the bridge at the ultimate limit state, but they specify the use of elastic load distribution factors for the evaluation of the design forces at the …

The Person-Job Fit: Implications Of Selecting Police Personnel On The Basis Of Job Dimensions, Aptitudes And Personality Traits., Brenda A. Tomini

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research was to examine how well aptitude and personality measures combined could predict job performance and job satisfaction, for a sample of entry-level police constables. In the first phase, eight job analyses were conducted on various entry-level policing positions using the Position Analysis Questionnaire (PAQ). Upon comparing the resulting eight profiles, using a variety of techniques, it was determined that all jobs analyzed were similar and could be considered as one job for the remainder of the analyses. In the second phase, seven raters were asked to conceptually link the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF) second-order …

The Social Construction Of Acid Rain: The Paper Says It Looks Like Rain Today., Christopher Lorne. Driscoll Jan 1995

The Social Construction Of Acid Rain: The Paper Says It Looks Like Rain Today., Christopher Lorne. Driscoll

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis has determined that there were a number of acid rain constructions presented to the public by the Ontario press. Although acid rain had been around since the 1890s, there had been no widespread knowledge among the general public until February 6, 1979, when the press considered the subject newsworthy. The press constructed acid rain using familiar symbolism and imagery that would get the attention of the readership. However, due to the newsgathering techniques of journalists, more specifically their selection of sources, the constructions that were presented to the public were biased and incomplete. The perspectives of political sources …

The Social Construction Of The Male Batterer As 'Normal'., Sandra Ann. Macmillan Jan 1995

The Social Construction Of The Male Batterer As 'Normal'., Sandra Ann. Macmillan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research, from a feminist constructionist perspective, attempts to deconstruct society's view of the male batterer as normal from legal documents such as police and probation reports, court transcripts, psychological reports and women's own accounts. This latter data was collected by the Michigan Battered Women's Clemency Project for women in Michigan prisons who are sentenced to lengthy incarceration for committing violent crimes related to the battering situation. This study goes against the existing literature available on men's violence against women and explains men's violence in terms of power and control on a structural and individual level. The existing research available …

The Social Construction Of The Serial Killer., John Gordon. Cater Jan 1995

The Social Construction Of The Serial Killer., John Gordon. Cater

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The research examined the social construction of the serial murderer. The primary theoretical proposition was that the serial murderer had learned to become such a murderer and therefore is a product of society. Sociological profiles of different types of serial murderers were created. The typologies employed in the research were the frequently cited typologies of serial murderer offered by Holmes and DeBurger (1988). The main source of data for the research was all available secondary information on the convicted serial killers Clifford Olson, Arthur Shawcross and Jeffrey Dahmer. The research followed a case study methodology and format. The results of …

The Structure And Spectroscopic Properties Of Langmuir-Blodgett Films Of Perylene Tetracarboxylic Derivatives., Eric G. Johnson Jan 1995

The Structure And Spectroscopic Properties Of Langmuir-Blodgett Films Of Perylene Tetracarboxylic Derivatives., Eric G. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A series of perylene tetracarboxylic diimides and monoimides have been fabricated into Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films. These films have been spectroscopically characterized through UV-visible absorption, steady-state fluorescence, infrared and Raman techniques. Molecular exciton and excimer formation have been observed for these films. The average molecular orientation of the chromophore was deduced through infrared transmission and reflection/absorption techniques. Electronic spectroscopy revealed the nature of the packing of the materials. The role of subphase/molecule and molecule/molecule interactions in the structure of the film were discussed, as well as the role of the imide substitution. These materials were successfully incorporated, as donors, into …

Neuropsychological Subgroups Of Patients With Alzheimer's Disease., Nancy Justina. Fisher Jan 1995

Neuropsychological Subgroups Of Patients With Alzheimer's Disease., Nancy Justina. Fisher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Neuropsychological test data from 134 patients diagnosed with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) were studied, to investigate whether subgroups of patients with qualitatively distinct neuropsychological profiles could be identified. Three empirical classification approaches were undertaken in this regard: Q-type factor analysis, hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis, and iterative partitioning (i.e., k-means). It was theorized that there may be different underlying pathways of neuropathological progression of AD, such that the brains of those with spared semantic knowledge or visual-spatial/constructional abilities are initially affected asymmetrically. Furthermore, an earlier proposed neuropsychological model of AD accounting for these variations in early clinical presentation is extended and …

John Donne's Epithalamia: The Marriage Of "Text" And "Context"., Kimberly Ann. Feyen Jan 1995

John Donne's Epithalamia: The Marriage Of "Text" And "Context"., Kimberly Ann. Feyen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

John Donne's epithalamia, "Epithalamion made at Lincolnes Inne," "An Epithalamion, Or marriage Song on the Lady Elizabeth, and Count Palatine being married on St. Valentines day," and the "Epithalamion" for the Earl of Somerset, when compared to other groups of poems written by Donne, especially the Songs and Sonets, receive relatively little critical attention. Perhaps Donne's marriage songs are so often overlooked because they are believed to be restricted not only by the patronage system, but by the nature of the genre itself. In this thesis, I have attempted to illustrate that, despite the tendency of critics to dismiss them …

The program did not differ from those described …

The View From Here: A Two-Act Play (Original Writing)., Eve Susan. Pidgeon Jan 1995

The View From Here: A Two-Act Play (Original Writing)., Eve Susan. Pidgeon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The View From Here is a project that intended to challenge traditional theatre forms, and traditional uses of stage space and time. In the play, three distinctly individual women are drawn together through common experiences and emotions by the catalyst that is art--be it literature, theatre, or the photography that is projected onto the set and the characters as part of the staging and the theme of the play. Essentially transformed and merged in the end, their solidarity is an affirmation of their belonging in a feminine, but not necessarily feminist, world that is definitively "theatrical" in its complexity. The …

A Graphical Structure-Editor That Generates Code For Attribute Grammar Systems., Daniel. Ravan Jan 1995

A Graphical Structure-Editor That Generates Code For Attribute Grammar Systems., Daniel. Ravan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Attribute Grammars were proposed by Donald Knuth (1968) as a tool for describing and implementing the semantics of programming languages. The number of attribute systems now-a-days is counted by tens, some of which are truly attribute systems (such as DELTA, FNC-2, and W/AGE) and other are loosely related to the formalism (such as YACC). Some of the systems are equipped with special input languages (OLGA for FUNC-2, ALADIN for GAG and SSL for the SYNTHESiZER GENERATOR) and others accept some variant of the attribute-grammar notation as their input. In all cases, the structure of the input, although written in different …

An Examination Of The Acceptance Of Construction And Demolition Waste Reduction Measures By Residential Building Contractors In Windsor And Essex County (Ontario)., Karl Dean. Tanner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Within the field of urban planning there is a growing recognition that the discipline must incorporate within its existing framework an environmental component that is sensitive to environmental concerns and which takes a proactive role. It is no longer possible to consider development in isolation without first looking at the consequences development has upon the natural and physical environment. The residential construction industry is seen as an industry where opportunity exists to reduce, reuse, recycle and recover material wasted during the construction process. The purpose of this study was to survey new residential building contractors in the Windsor/Essex County area …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) being an important oil seed crop was chosen for this study, because genes isolated and characterized from sunflower will shed more light on plant development, and can also be useful in biotechnological applications. The study involved the isolation and characterization of two sunflower floral-specific genes: SF15 (an anther-specific gene) and SF17 (a pollen-specific gene). SF15: Northern blot analysis revealed that the probe hybridized to 1.0 kb mRNA transcripts present in the young unopened disc florets, whose development was delineated into seven stages. SF15 transcripts begin to accumulate in stage 1 and reach higher levels in stages 2, …

Cobalt Stabilized Gamma-Chloroalkynones And Alkynoates As Gamma-Carbonyl Cation Synthons., Charles Stephen. Vizniowski Jan 1995

Cobalt Stabilized Gamma-Chloroalkynones And Alkynoates As Gamma-Carbonyl Cation Synthons., Charles Stephen. Vizniowski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

$\gamma$-Cationic-$\alpha,\beta$-unsaturated carbonyl synthons have been prepared via hexacarbonyldicobalt complexed $\gamma$-chloroalkynoates and alkynones (100). Treatment of 100 with silver salts in the presence of silyl enol ethers (102-104) generated 2-alkynyl-1,6-dicarbonyl compounds (134-149) in poor to good yields. Products of 101, with a non hydrogen substituent at the propargyl site, with 102 and 103 generated syn and anti diastereomers. The ratios of syn:anti diastereomers range from 1.3: 1 to 2.1: 1 for 102 to 6.9: 1 to 15: 1 for 103. These ratios are similar to literature compounds. Decomplexation to the alkyne effected in good to excellent yields. A dimer 151 was …

Conflicting Gender, Kin, And Couple Dynamics Of Nigerian Immigrant Families In Canada., Akinniyi Godwin. Opeola

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is two-fold: first, it is an effort to understand how Nigerian immigrant families have improved their economic status and live up to their financial obligation to their relatives. Secondly, it intends to see how women's status changes by way of participating in family decision making once they become income earners. The structure of the Yoruba traditional family and its dynamics are examined. Then, the modern family forms in Nigeria such as the modified extended family and the nuclear family forms are discussed. The researcher chose to present a survey of literature reflecting two major areas: …

Developing A Results-Oriented Training Program For Middle Managers In The Belize Public Service., Elizabeth Ilda M. Chavarria Jan 1995

Developing A Results-Oriented Training Program For Middle Managers In The Belize Public Service., Elizabeth Ilda M. Chavarria

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

All developing countries struggle to build administrative structures and institutions that have the capacity to facilitate national development. Countries in the Caribbean have learned from each other's experiences. These countries, including Belize, share a similar colonial history, similar social and economic development patterns and have adopted the same type of government and public administration. It was for this reason that this research examined the framework of management training in four Caribbean islands: Jamaica, Bahamas, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago. As a concept, training is seen as an intervention strategy to facilitate the induction, acceptance and implementation of government policies. Specifically, …

Contextual Influences On Parental Directive Speech Style., Cornelia Linda. Illman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the present study the stability of parental directive speech styles was examined across contexts and over time. Two variations in contexts were considered--setting and group size. Comparisons were made of parental speech styles between two settings: freeplay and supper, and two group sizes: dyads and polyads. A developmental comparison was also conducted, evaluating the speech used at two supper sessions that were spaced six months apart. The parental speech styles examined were concerned with the use of follow versus lead utterances, i.e., utterances which related to the child's current focus of attention (follow), or utterances which were unrelated to …
