Retrieval From An Image Knowledge Base, James Janicki Jan 1993

Retrieval From An Image Knowledge Base, James Janicki

Theses

With advances in computer technology, images and image databases are becoming increasingly important. Retrievals of images in current image database systems have been designed using keyword searches. These carefully designed and handcrafted systems are very efficient given the application domain they are built for. Unfortunately, they are not adaptable to other domains, not expandable for other uses of the existing information and are not very forgiving to their users. The appearance of full-text search provides for a more general search given textual documents. However, pictorial images contain a vast amount of information that is difficult to catalog in a general …

Robotic Path Planning With Obstacle Avoidance, Barbara T. Switzer Jan 1993

Robotic Path Planning With Obstacle Avoidance, Barbara T. Switzer

Theses

Planning can be used in a variety of applications. In this paper we will discuss those planning techniques that Apply to the task of robotic path planning - Here a planner is used to generate "paths" which a robot can follow to maneuver from some point A to another point B, while at the same time avoiding all obstacles. All approaches discussed in this paper are based on viewing the robot as a sphere . By assuming this , the need to consider the robot's orientation as it moves along a proposed path is eliminated . Another requirement is that …

A Material Cost And Weight Comparison Of Shipping Containers Using Ect Versus Burst Strength For Room Air Conditioners, Anne Margaret Mcsweeney

Theses

This research compares the material cost and weight of using edge crush specifications for the selection of a Whirlpool Corporation room air conditioner shipping container verses Mullen burst strength specifications. For the purposes of this thesis, the air conditioner studied is referred to as Product "M". The following presumptions are made. The material cost of using an ECT performance specified container is lower than the material cost of a Mullen specified container. The material weight is less using an ECT specified shipping container rather than a Mullen specified shipping container. The data generated first are the strength of the product …

Simulation Of A Heat Pump Model Using Siman, Venkatesh Sundarraj Jan 1993

Simulation Of A Heat Pump Model Using Siman, Venkatesh Sundarraj

Theses

A Heat pump is a system that follows the vapor compression cycle in which a vapor is compressed, then condensed to a liquid, following which the pressure is dropped so that fluid can evaporate at a low pressure. The system is considered to be a continuous system as there is a refrigerant whose state changes continuously throughout the system. This thesis work presents the application of the Simulation program SIMAN in a continuous modeling environment. The Refrigeration cycle was chosen as the Heat Pump as there is a continuous flow of the refrigerant through the system and hence was an …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Poly(Ester-Imide)S Containing Chiral Centers, T. Edwin Freeman Jan 1993

Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Poly(Ester-Imide)S Containing Chiral Centers, T. Edwin Freeman

Theses

This Thesis project describes the preparation of a series of novel Poly(ester-imide)s containing chiral centers, and their characterization for liquid crystallinity. The synthetic approach towards the incorporation of the chiral centers in the polymer backbone involved the reaction of α-amino carboxylic acid with trimellitic anhydride (TMA) or pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) to prepare the imide dicarboxylic acid monomers, which were melt polymerized with the respective diols containing two, three and five to ten methylene groups to obtain the Poly(ester-imide)s. The monomers were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis and polarimetry. Characterization of the polymers was done by dilute solution viscosity, infrared …

A Study Of The Effect Of Water-Pick Up Of Uv Curable Offset Ink On Its Curing Time And Its End Use Properties, Ike Siti Fatnasari Jan 1993

A Study Of The Effect Of Water-Pick Up Of Uv Curable Offset Ink On Its Curing Time And Its End Use Properties, Ike Siti Fatnasari

Theses

The curing time and the end use properties are as important as printing quality for the printer. Shorter curing time equals more jobs and higher productivity each week. The latest available technology for decreasing curing time is Ultraviolet curing technology. This technology uses ultraviolet radiation as the energy source to excite the active site of the monomer in the ink to start the polymerization process. The desired result is a hard polymerized ink film. Another advantage of Ultraviolet curing technology is that the ink is solventless. The screen printing process has the advantage of being a single-fluid printing process. Ink …

Color Space Selection For Jpeg Image Compression, Nathan Moroney Jan 1993

Color Space Selection For Jpeg Image Compression, Nathan Moroney

Theses

The Joint Photographic Experts Group's image compression algorithm has been shown to be a very efficient and powerful method of compressing images. However, there is little substantive information about which color space should be utilized when implementing the JPEG algorithm. Currently, the JPEG algorithm is set up for use with any three component color space. The objective of this research was to determine whether or not the color space selected will significantly improve image compression capabilities. The RGB, XYZ, YIQ, CIELAB, CIELUV, and CIELAB LCh color spaces were examined and compared. Both numerical measures and psychophysical techniques were used to …

What Happens To A Dream Deferred?, Alan H. Gordon Jan 1993

What Happens To A Dream Deferred?, Alan H. Gordon

Theses

I believe that everyone must handle things in their own way to remain true to their goals and themselves. I have strived to stay loyal to this idea during my thesis, because any superficial attempts at representing my views on racial subjects have fallen short of honesty. An honest representation of qany subject cones form the heart, and is a fresh and exciting image. I motivated myself to produce as much work as I was phsically capable of while striving to maintain a high level of aesthetic quality. In order to reduce confusion and convey my ideas clearly, I have …

Efficient Software Implementation Of The Jbig Compression Standard, Craig M. Smith Jan 1993

Efficient Software Implementation Of The Jbig Compression Standard, Craig M. Smith

Theses

JBIG is a new binary image compression standard that is designed to handle both text and halftoned documents. It significantly outperforms the CCITT Group 3 and Group 4 standards especially on halftoned documents. The JBIG standard is based on an arithmetic encoder, and it features adaptive probability estimation, adaptive templates, and three different types of prediction. It also allows either sequential or progressive compression of image data. A brief discussion of information theory is given as it applies to image compression. The JBIG algorithm is described, and several techniques are developed to efficiently implement the algorithm in software. The most …

Analysis Of Packaging Based Determinant Attributes For Minimally Processed Vegetables: A Food Service End-Use Study, James A. Myers

Theses

The objective of this study was to determine what packaging based attributes most influence the purchasing decision of foodservice operators. The study was limited to those packaging attributes associated with minimally processed vegetables. A survey instrument was used to poll operators from various segments of the foodservice industry. Factor analysis was employed in an effort to identify attributes with degrees of communality. It was determined that attributes associated with the utility function of foodservice packages were of primary concern. These attributes were linked to the challenges of handling products in the foodservice environment. Factor loadings were significant on two other …

Application Of Sensors In An Experimental Investigation Of Mode Dampings, Richard Hiram Berg Jan 1993

Application Of Sensors In An Experimental Investigation Of Mode Dampings, Richard Hiram Berg

Theses

The subject of this investigation is the method of calculating material damping of a cantilever beam. Damping is the mechanism by which the vibrational energy is gradually converted into heat or sound. The loss factor, otherwise known as the damping factor, is part of the global properties of a structure which can be identified from its frequency response measurements. Experimental frequency response measurements require three main components: a source of excitation, sensors, and analyzer. It is the objective of this thesis to investigate the effect of different types of exciters and sensors on the frequency response measurement of the cantilever …

Process For The Development Of A Repulpable Barrier Laminate, Brian Bigler Jan 1993

Process For The Development Of A Repulpable Barrier Laminate, Brian Bigler

Theses

The purpose of this study was to develop a process to develop a multi-material paperboard based laminate carton and membrane. This includes replacing the existing paperboard-polyethylene-foilpolyethylene structure used in the Foldcan. The new structure must meet the current barrier requirement without contaminating the pulp and finished paperboard. Standard requirements of repulpablility for recycled paperboard mills must aslo be met. Research has been conducted to identify all current materials. Potential replacement material for traditional, commonly laminated materials as well as newly developed materials have been studied. A possible new paperboard based lamination which could be easily separated and recycled by all …

The Suitability Of Polyethylene Terephthalate Copolyester For Radiation Sterilized Dry Small Volume Parenterals, Steven M. Drucker Jan 1993

The Suitability Of Polyethylene Terephthalate Copolyester For Radiation Sterilized Dry Small Volume Parenterals, Steven M. Drucker

Theses

Small volume parenterals (SVP) are typically terminally sterilized through autoclaving. This technique works when the containers are filled with a liquid. However, in the case of sterile powders, autoclaving is not a viable method nor is dry heat since most products can not withstand 2 50C for a half hour. Thus gamma irradiation may be an acceptable method to terminally sterilize this class of product. One of the drawbacks of gamma irradiation is that it will discolor glass which is currently the package material of choice due to superior barrier properties and relative inertness. This paper explores the possibility of …

A Feasibility Study Of A Recycled Paper Scoop, A Dosing Device For Synthetic Powder Laundry Detergents, Patrick Seo Thin Lee Jan 1993

A Feasibility Study Of A Recycled Paper Scoop, A Dosing Device For Synthetic Powder Laundry Detergents, Patrick Seo Thin Lee

Theses

This research assessed the consumer acceptance of a recycled paper scoop versus the existing polystyrene (PS) scoop as a dosing device for synthetic powder laundry detergents. Specifically: (1) Were the consumers aware of and in agreement with the environmental benefits of a recycled paper scoop versus the current plastic scoop? (2) Did consumers consider a recycled paper scoop as an acceptable replacement for the current plastic measuring scoop? The implementation of a recycled paper scoop would reduce packaging waste by approximately 20% by weight and a significant source reduction through decreased consumption of raw materials. Additionally, it would provide a …

A Study Comparing The Moisture Barrier Characteristics Of Flat Liners Versus Stoppers In Continuous Thread Closures On Glass Viles, William L. White Jan 1993

A Study Comparing The Moisture Barrier Characteristics Of Flat Liners Versus Stoppers In Continuous Thread Closures On Glass Viles, William L. White

Theses

The combination of glass vial, elastomeric stopper, and aluminum crimp seal represents one of the principal packaging systems used to package diagnostic reagents, ophthalmic and veterinary medicines, and pharmaceutical products. This work states that elastomeric flat liners are an alternative to traditional stoppers. To confirm this position, several comparative moisture transmission evaluations are conducted to contrast the barrier performance of glued flat liners against stoppers in continuous thread closures on glass vials. After a review of several standard packaging integrity testing methods, this thesis demonstrates the use of coulometric titration as an alternative package system testing methodology. Coulometric titrators are …

Ramsey Numbers Involving A Triangle: Theory And Algorithms, Xia Jin Jan 1993

Ramsey Numbers Involving A Triangle: Theory And Algorithms, Xia Jin

Theses

Ramsey theory studies the existence of highly regular patterns in large sets of objects. Given two graphs G and H, the Ramsey number R(G, H) is defined to be the smallest integer n such that any graph F with n or more vertices must contain G, or F must contain H. Albeit beautiful, the problem of determining Ramsey numbers is considered to be very difficult. We focus our attention on efficient algorithms for determining Ram sey numbers involving a triangle: R(K3 , G). With the help of theoretical tools, the search space is reduced by using different pruning techniques and …

Word Hypothesis From Undifferentiated, Errorful Phonetic Strings, R. Thomas Sellman Jan 1993

Word Hypothesis From Undifferentiated, Errorful Phonetic Strings, R. Thomas Sellman

Theses

This thesis investigates a dynamic programming approach to word hypothesis in the context of a speaker independent, large vocabulary, continuous speech recognition system. Using a method known as Dynamic Time Warping, an undifferentiated phonetic string (one without word boundaries) is parsed to produce all possible words contained in a domain specific lexicon. Dynamic Time Warping is a common method of sequence comparison used in matching the acoustic feature vectors representing an unknown input utterance and some reference utterance. The cumulative least cost path, when compared with some threshold can be used as a decision criterion for recognition. This thesis attempts …

Optimal Morphological Filters, Vivek Swarnakar Jan 1993

Optimal Morphological Filters, Vivek Swarnakar

Theses

The design of optimal morphological filters, in the binary or gray scale domain, involves a computationally intense search procedure that, in practice, can be intractable. The present work provides a practical method for optimal morphological filter design that is based on the statistical estimation theory and lattice theory. A link is made between optimal morphological filter and the conditional probability distribution. For a given conditional probability distribution a morphological filter may or may not exist. If a morphological filter exists, then the method designs the one that is optimal among morphological and all other filters. If an optimal morphological filter …

"And The Woman Is A Stranger": The Double-Voiced Discourse In Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea And Voyage In The Dark, Hsiao-Chien Lee

Masters Theses

As the daughter of an English father, Jean Rhys inherited from her father and his sister the assertion that England was her motherland. On the other hand, growing up in Dominica which is inhabited mostly by African-Caribbean people, and surrounded by black servants--some of whom were her childhood playmates, Rhys naturally identifies herself with blacks. In her unfinished autobiography (Smile Please 1979), Rhys points out that she used to envy black people, feeling that they laugh a lot and seem to have a better time than whites do. Nevertheless, the problematic tensions of colonial and postcolonial society obstructed the …

Blood/Injury And Snake Phobias: Cognitive, Behavioral, And Physiological Characteristics, Martin Edward Franklin Jan 1993

Blood/Injury And Snake Phobias: Cognitive, Behavioral, And Physiological Characteristics, Martin Edward Franklin

Open Access Dissertations

Blood / injury phobia is a simple phobia unique in its association with fainting, underlying physiological processes, and potentially dire consequences for sufferers due to avoidance of medical attention. Laboratory studies of blood/injury phobias (e.g, Ost et al., 1984) have demonstrated a diphasic physiological response (immediate increases in heart rate and blood pressure above previously recorded baseline levels followed by significant decreases below baseline) when patients view videotapes of thoracic surgery. Little is known about the physiological responses to blood/injury stimuli of college students reporting fear of blood. It is important to examine the cognitive, behavioral, and physiological characteristics of …

The Relationship Between Prior Abuse And Personality Functioning In Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatients, Kimberly Shaunesey Jan 1993

The Relationship Between Prior Abuse And Personality Functioning In Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatients, Kimberly Shaunesey

Open Access Dissertations

Previous research has indicated that a history of abuse is related to later problems in personality functioning in adults. In addition, the literature has suggested that abused adolescents also experience more family dysfunction. In the present investigation, 541 subjects' records were drawn from consecutive admissions to the adolescent inpatient service of a private psychiatric hospital. Psychological records which contained copies of the scored Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the Family Assessment Device (FAD) were reviewed. Corresponding medical charts were obtained, from which abuse histories, the Hollingshead Four Factor Index of Social Status, and other demographic information were recorded. A …
