Differentiating between real and imaginary places on a map is not necessarily a strength of undergraduates--or ChatGPT--in a basic world regional geography course. Using a video, The 15 Countries that people think are FAKE, as a launching tool, students undertake an exercise in determining which places are real.

Graduate Student Scholarship
Caroline Blumish, a WVU Professional Writing graduate (2023), curated this exhibit on the history of banned books in the United States. The exhibit explores the pervasive practice of literary censorship, emphasizing its attempts to silence voices, perspectives, and records of historic events. Blumish's showcase delves into the evolution of censorship, from early suppression efforts to contemporary challenges, urging viewers to contemplate the delicate balance between societal values and the fundamental principles of free speech. The exhibit highlights the resilience of writers and encourages critical discussions on the broader implications of stifling diverse voices in a democratic society.

Retconning Heller: Five Takes On New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. V. Bruen, Glenn Harlan Reynolds, Brannon P. Denning
Scholarly Works
New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen was the first significant Second Amendment case that the Supreme Court had heard in nearly fifteen years since its decision in District of Columbia v. Heller. This Article offers some preliminary observations about the opinion itself, as well as its likely effects, some of which are starting to manifest
Our first take concerns the question of opinion assignment. Why did Chief Justice Roberts-whose support for the Second Amendment has been suspect-assign the opinion to Justice Thomas?
Takes Two and Three concern Justice Thomas's substitution of text, history, and tradition for …

The Effect Of A Psychologically Informed Video Series To Treat Adolescents' Patellofemoral Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial., Mitchell Selhorst, Jessica Hoehn, Laura Schmitt, Jason Benedict, Alicia Fernandez-Fernandez
HPD Articles
OBJECTIVE: To test whether a series of brief, psychologically informed educational videos added to physical therapy improved function among adolescents with patellofemoral pain (PFP). The secondary aims were to assess pain and psychological beliefs.
DESIGN: A double-blinded randomized controlled trial.
METHODS: Sixty-eight adolescents with PFP were randomly assigned to view brief, psychologically-informed videos (n=34) or control videos (n=34) in addition to usual care physical therapy. The psychologically-informed videos targeted fear-avoidance beliefs, kinesiophobia, and pain catastrophizing. The control videos conveyed basic anatomy, biomedical factors, and lower extremity mechanics. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, three weeks, six weeks (primary endpoint), and three …

Online Midsummer Seminar (Oms #2) "Fantasy Goes To Hell", The Mythopoeic Society
Online Midsummer Seminar (Oms #2) "Fantasy Goes To Hell", The Mythopoeic Society
Mythcon Programs
FANTASY GOES TO HELL was originally intended to be our 2023 Midwinter Seminar, but our plans for an in-person Mythcon in 2023 fell through, and the topic proved to be so popular it strained the resources we had available for a seminar. Hence we proposed that we expand the seminar into what we have previously called a “Halfling Mythcon”—a virtual Mythcon taking the place of an in-person one.
FANTASY GOES TO HELL will run in parallel with general virtual conference tracks devoted to other topics in Mythopoeic Fantasy, such as presentations by award nominees and traditional after-hours programming. The 2023 …
The Heroine’S Journey In Hollywood, Melika Zayehmoureh
The Heroine’S Journey In Hollywood, Melika Zayehmoureh
Masters Theses
This thesis examines Joseph Campbell’s theory of the hero’s journey as it pertains to the heroine, especially in Hollywood. It refutes Campbell’s mythological premise that only men can experience the hero’s journey thereby being labeled as heroes because of the actions they performed to reach maturity. This thesis demonstrates that although women reach maturity through the natural means of biology, as described by Campbell, they can still make change occur because they have a mind and a will to act as well. Stories of women such as Ninveh from the screenplay Journey to Freedom, Katniss from The Hunger Games (2012) …

Exploring Fiction Writer’S Approaches To Plot Outlining During The Planning Stage Of The Writing Process, Paul A. Wilson Jr.
Masters Theses
This thesis is about one person’s discovery and growth as a writer of creative fiction that spans decades. It specifically explores and analyzes how professional authors approach plot outlining during the planning stages of the writing process. Some professional authors prepare plot outlines prior to writing their first draft, while others do not. Over the course of the author’s writing life, experimenting with both methods has been instructive to the development of a personal approach to plot outlining. The Artist statement provides background on the author. Next, the Critical Paper examines and analyzes plot outlining and plot structure. Plot structure …

Apologetics And Popular Culture Phenomena: A Critique Of Ted Turnau's Method Concerning Anime, Matthew Hunter Hamilton
Apologetics And Popular Culture Phenomena: A Critique Of Ted Turnau's Method Concerning Anime, Matthew Hunter Hamilton
Masters Theses
Limited work has been performed in the field of Christian apologetics and popular culture, much less the intersection between anime and Christian apologetics. One scholar who has attempted to broach this gap has been Ted Turnau, who has developed a five-step diagnostic method for apologetically engaging popular culture phenomena. However, his method contains key flaws. Using the work of Thomas Lamarre, a scholar in the field of anime studies, a central contention will be made: that the material and technology of anime have processes that affect how viewers inhabit and orient themselves in the world, which in turn influences their …

The Decline In Attendance At Local Churches In Queens, New York: A Biblically Based Strategic Revitalization Plan To Bring Local Churches Back To Spiritual Health, Marilyn A. Dolloway
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The decline in church attendance is not a new phenomenon. Historical evidence shows that God has intervened to revitalize and restore the church to a healthy state. Unfortunately, attendance at churches in contemporary times worldwide has declined, as congregations at approximately ninety percent of churches have shrunk. This trend is evident in the United States, where upwards of fifty congregations close their doors permanently each week, resulting in an annual attendance decline of one to two percent. The decline is remarkable in the New York borough of Queens. Churches have been declining for decades, with only fifteen to twenty-five members …

Saving The Superheroes, Jeffrey Lawrence Nickles
Saving The Superheroes, Jeffrey Lawrence Nickles
Masters Theses
Normal Man is a screenplay about Freddy, a below-average underdog who changes the world with the power of his positive thinking. The thesis briefly explores the psychology of how a person’s perceived self-image could stop a highly qualified individual from achieving their dreams, while an underqualified person with a positive self-image can go on to greatness. Other underdogs are compared against Freddy in order to provide a relatable yet successful protagonist. The Beatitudes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount are also analyzed to show how the supposed “backward” attitudes of Christianity can save the day.
Generative Artificial Intelligence For Rotoscoping, Laurence Moroney
Generative Artificial Intelligence For Rotoscoping, Laurence Moroney
Defensive Publications Series
Rotoscoping is a commonly used animation technique that involves taking live action filmed material and sketching on top of it to produce an animation. Rotoscoping is expensive and time consuming, but can produce smooth, eye-catching, and realistic animation. This disclosure describes rotoscoping techniques based on generative AI. Frames of a live action source video are obtained. Each frame is passed through generative AI with hyperparameters tuned for rotoscoping. A text prompt (or other suitable prompt) that specifies the type of output is provided to the generative AI. Frames generated by generative AI are re-assembled into a rotoscoped video. The techniques …

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog
James Vito Palazzolo’s first novel, Vulnerabilia, is a dark comedic novella weaving genres of mystery and literature. With characters pulled from entertainment culture headlines, and hints of mockumentary blended with psychological thriller, the book explores what aspects of a “real” self can survive the American addiction to media, entertainment and violence.

I Come Creeping: Remembering The Battle Of Blair Mountain In Graphic Narrative, Ellie James
I Come Creeping: Remembering The Battle Of Blair Mountain In Graphic Narrative, Ellie James
Senior Honors Theses
Between August 24 and September 4 of 1921, approximately 10,000 West Virginia coal miners marched to Blair Mountain in Logan County in a militant stand for their right to unionize. Despite its status as the largest labor uprising in United States history, few know or understand the impact of the Battle of Blair Mountain today, even within the borders of West Virginia. This creative project aims to contribute to ongoing efforts to memorialize this period of the West Virginia Mine Wars through the creation of a 10-page comic, titled I Come Creeping, which depicts and is informed by the …
