Such responsibility may be vital for English teachers, especially, as we strive to establish communities of writers and spaces for critical thinking and conversation. When I sat down to write about this experience, I saw it as an opportunity to discuss a taboo situation and its positive aftermath, with the aim of demonstrating how it might be possible to use such events as points of departure in creating engaging writing assignments.

The Role Of “Economic Education” In Achieving Capitalist Hegemony, Sharon Beder
The Role Of “Economic Education” In Achieving Capitalist Hegemony, Sharon Beder
Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)
Free enterprise has become the prevailing idea of our times, an idea without serious rival although not without critics. This paper examines two major campaigns during the 20th Century that were aimed at maintaining capitalist hegemony by promoting free enterprise values. The first was after the second world war when American business interests felt threatened by government intervention and controls on the one hand, and union activity on the other. They responded with a massive ‘economic education’ program, aimed at school students and employees, which taught the fundamentals of free enterprise economics. Business values, such as the rewards of hard …

Harry Potter And The Fixation Requirement: An Attempt At Applying The U.S. Copyright Act Of 1976 To J.K. Rowling's World Of Witchcraft And Wizardry, Yvette Joy Liebesman
Harry Potter And The Fixation Requirement: An Attempt At Applying The U.S. Copyright Act Of 1976 To J.K. Rowling's World Of Witchcraft And Wizardry, Yvette Joy Liebesman
Georgetown Law Student Series
In the Harry Potter universe, images in photographs and paintings are magically animated. Supposing these items exist, one could posit whether they qualify for copyright protection under current United States law; that is, whether works such as the paintings that hang at Hogwarts meet the subject matter and fixation requirements under the Copyright Act of 1976. The qualifications for protection of works created with such a new technology may already be adequately addressed under the current law. If so, we should question whether legislation should be created to regulate a technology, or protect associated rights, that is either in its …

Comparison of literacy in South Korea and the United States through the lens of a ten-year old exemplifies a comparative survey study conducted in both the United States and South Korea. The ongoing study measures students' reading habits and their perceptions of the adults in their lives as readers over a seven-year period. Some questions that have driven the study include, "What affective filters influence development of students' reading skills? Do teachers model leisure reading interests and habits through example? Do teachers share books with students or parts of books they are reading? Do teachers generate frequent discourse with their …

Intersecting Global And Local: Spatial Analysis Of Ethnicities Of Asian Businesses In The Minneapolis-Saint Paul Metro Area, Grace Emiko Guthe
Intersecting Global And Local: Spatial Analysis Of Ethnicities Of Asian Businesses In The Minneapolis-Saint Paul Metro Area, Grace Emiko Guthe
Geography Honors Projects
The changing nature of immigration to the United States and changes in the morphology of American cities challenge traditional theories of ethnic entrepreneurship as a means of success in assimilating into American society. This study, based on data of over 800 businesses in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area, finds that specific Asian ethnic groups demonstrate distinctive patterns, which often do not conform to traditional theories of ethnic entrepreneurship. Instead, other concepts, such as heterolocalism and transnationalism, add to the discussion concerning a new role for modern ethnic entrepreneurs. This new role must examine ethnic businesses as localities of transnationalism in a …
