Lawyers And Public Service: Duty, Faith, And The 'Good Republican' In The West Wing, Andrew Flavelle Martin Jan 2025

Lawyers And Public Service: Duty, Faith, And The 'Good Republican' In The West Wing, Andrew Flavelle Martin

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

Popular culture reveals much about the perceived role of lawyers in contemporary life. In this article, I draw lessons from the portrayal of lawyers in Aaron Sorkin's classic television series, The West Wing. As a drama centred around a Democratic presidential administration, Republicans often provide the foil. From time to time, however, the show lionizes what might be termed ‘the good Republican’. That ‘good Republican’ is most often a practicing lawyer whose desire to serve is grounded in duty or faith. In this essay, I use a trio of these characters to explore the role of lawyers in public service. …

Operation Shark: Addressing The Negative Portrayal Of Sharks In Media, Michael R. O'Shea May 2024

Operation Shark: Addressing The Negative Portrayal Of Sharks In Media, Michael R. O'Shea

Masters Theses

Sharks are some of the most well adapted and effective animals in the animal kingdom. Unfortunately, they are also some of the most feared. For many people the word shark evokes images of vicious attacks like those seen in movies such as Jaws. Sharks have also been negatively portrayed in the media. This negative portrayal of sharks has led to misconceptions about sharks that have damaged their populations. Efforts have been made to raise awareness and fight common misconceptions of sharks. However, many people still hold on to the incorrect ideas they have about sharks. This thesis will examine the …

The Role Of Student Motivation In Integrating Ai Into Web Design Education: A Longitudinal Study, Jason Lively, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

Amidst the current wave studies of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, this longitudinal case study, spanning Spring 2023 to Spring 2024, delves into the integration of AI in the UI/UX web design classroom. By introducing both text-based and image-based AI tools to students with varying levels of skill in introductory web design and user experience (UX) courses, the study observed a significant enhancement in student creative capabilities and project outcomes. The utilization of text-based generators markedly improved writing efficiency and coding, while image-based tools facilitated better ideation and color selection. These findings underscore the potential to augment traditional educational methods, …

ENGL 1102 Showcase

This anthology talks about the current state of consumer experiences in the modern entertainment industry. Some of the trends are good while many are bad. Streaming services are now over abundant and cost way too much. Game publishers are pushing out games fast but lack content. One the other hand, smaller groups are publishing cheaper and much more successful. We wish to discuss the effects of these actions on the consumers' side of content consumption.

The World Of Marubia: A Writer’S Perspective Into Building Worlds Using Transmedia Aesthetics, Diego Lucca Espinosa

Whittier Scholars Program

This Senior Project is a Generative and Research Thesis based around the techniques and aesthetics of Transmedia storytelling that are used when dabbling in World Building. It includes three interconnected creative pieces: 2 flash fiction stories and a short screenplay, all revolving and connected to the story world of my creation, Marubia. These stories exist in a world going through a technopoaclypse; Robotic creatures wield magic against their Human brothers in arms, slaved to the command of a Dark God. The Transmedia Aesthetics coined by Professor Geoffrey Long, specifically Resonant Simple-Story Myths, Fractal Storytelling, and World-Centric Narrative Design were pivotal …

A Building Block Of Empathy: Establishing A Graphic Medicine Collection In An Academic Health Sciences Library., Jess King, Alison Bobal

Journal Articles: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

To help address the well-being of the campus and contribute to empathy building amongst students pursuing careers as healthcare providers, an academic health sciences library built a graphic novel collection focused on comics that discuss medical conditions and health-related topics. The collection contains the experiences of patients, providers, and caregivers. The reader-friendly format of graphic novels provides an easy entry point for discussing empathy with health professions faculty and students. The collection has been used in the classroom during library instruction sessions, with the idea of integrating it within the curriculum.

Las Aztecas: Gender, Nationalism, And Sport In Mexico And The World In The Early 1970s, Madelina Marie Homberger Cordia

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

In 1970, a Mexican women’s national fútbol (soccer) team participated in the first-ever women’s World Cup, held in Italy. Organized by private business interests, Mexico competed as the sole representative from outside of Europe. The Mexican media and State officials, such as Mexico City regent Alfonso Corona del Rosal, used this opportunity to frame the team’s travel abroad as defending not only the honor of the Mexican nation, but the entire Western Hemisphere against more developed and wealthier European teams. The following year, in 1971, Mexico hosted the second women’s World Cup and, in the same way that the State …

Magneto’S Origin In The Holocaust And How It Influences His Character Today, Rena Usprich

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Marvel's Magneto was created in 1963, originally with no connection to the Holocaust. However that changed in the late 1970's when his origin was reworked to make him a Jewish Holocaust survivor. That origin persists to this day and is explored in modern media produced by Marvel, both film and comic-wise.

Introduction (To Emotional Expressionism), E. Deidre Pribram Ph.D. Jan 2024

Introduction (To Emotional Expressionism), E. Deidre Pribram Ph.D.

Faculty Publications: Communication

The primary purpose of Emotional Expressionism: Television Serialization, The Melodramatic Mode, and Socioemotionality is to explore the forms, functions, and nuances of emotions in popular, mediated narratives. Clearly, emotions constitute a key means by which audiences experience and make sense of narrative media, in that mediated stories make compelling arguments or take up resonant positions through their emotional methods and meanings. The value of developing an emotional template for screen media lies in generating new analytical and interpretative approaches to narrative aesthetics, especially in terms of their pains and pleasures. As this study seeks to demonstrate, emotional analysis opens up …

Solutions To Period Poverty In The United States, Sanya Surya Jan 2024

Solutions To Period Poverty In The United States, Sanya Surya

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

Many women around the world lack access to menstrual hygiene products and hygienic, private sanitation facilities: an issue commonly known as “period poverty”. Women who experience this phenomenon often resort to unhealthy alternatives, putting them at higher risk for infections. Period poverty also causes many women to miss significant amounts of school and/or work, resulting in school drop-outs and adverse career outcomes. Menstrual inequities have recently come under greater study in low- to middle-income countries, but evidence suggests that women in the United States are adversely affected by period poverty as well. With this in mind, I set out to …

"With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility": Improving Your Feedback And Hallmarks Of Effective Feedback, Randall Ryder

Articles

Effective feedback can change a law student’s trajectory in law school and beyond. The feedback-centric nature of experiential learning courses allows law students to both develop their skills and personal lawyering style. However, many experiential instructors are from a different generation, with different expectations and communication styles than today’s law students. This article highlights hallmarks of effective feedback for the modern law school classroom. As the field of law continues to evolve, law schools will need to as well.

This article discusses four key hallmarks: (1) provide feedback in multiple formats,(2) help each student develop their personal style, (3) explain …

With the progression of streaming services in recent years, the art form of animation has gained traction, continuing to develop into exceedingly creative forms through the work of talented artists. Animation has developed alongside the film industry, achieving great success in the process. This thesis will define animation and its place within visual effects, critically analyze categories of character design, theme, and story while demonstrating their relationship with animation, and contrast animation with live action films to understand its strengths and differentiations. The research concludes that animation has great benefits to offer the film industry and should be continued to …

Batch Cataloging At Jmu: A Framework And Four Projects, Rebecca B. French

Libraries

Many libraries have uncataloged collections or backlogs which could benefit from batch processing, but little guidance exists on how to conceptualize and plan such a project. I will share a framework I developed which categorizes types of batch cataloging projects and outlines the steps involved. I will also describe four projects we've done at JMU to illustrate how the framework can be applied to design a variety of metadata workflows.
