America At A Glance: Unemployment Among People With Disabilities During The Covid-19 Recession, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Employment

People with disabilities are often the first to experience economic disruptions, and among the last to recover. Unemployment among people with disabilities spiked to 18.9% in April 2020 and declined to 12.5% in September. Both the initial increase and recent decrease in unemployment was primarily driven by changes in temporary unemployment (unemployed workers who expect to go back to their same job within six months). While temporary unemployment has gone down, permanent unemployment has risen since the recession began, and may indicate that for some, temporary unemployment is becoming permanent. As the recession wears on and unemployment benefits begin to …

Lessons We Learned In Moving Traditional Library Services To Synchronous And Asynchronous Delivery Online And Curbside, Barbara M. Pope

Faculty Submissions

It has long been a librarian role to provide access to books, serials, and media, as well as library instruction to support learning and access to information, whether in a K-12 school, college or university, or public library. Some materials and services, such as library instruction, have traditionally been available in the library only, but the world as we know is changing. Higher education’s movement towards online and hybrid learning has caused academic librarians to move their instruction online also. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic caused libraries nationwide to shut down temporarily, while they identified and served their patrons’ needs. …

Elizabeth Bowen And Nicole Capozziello, A Human Rights Perspective On Homelessness And Covid-19, Elizabeth Bowen, Nicole Capozziello

Baldy Center Blog

In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, experts warned of the unique and devastating havoc that the novel illness could wreak on people experiencing homelessness, an already vulnerable population. While reports thus far suggest that neither the prevalence nor mortality of COVID-19 among people who are homeless has been as severe as feared, the pandemic has brought about opportunities to enact innovative and long overdue approaches to the issue of homelessness. Though there are compelling public health reasons for providing housing assistance and related services, we believe that there is more enduring value in reframing homelessness from a human …

Several coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines are currently in human trials. In June 2020, we surveyed 13,426 people in 19 countries to determine potential acceptance rates and factors influencing acceptance of a COVID-19 vaccine. Of these, 71.5% of participants reported that they would be very or somewhat likely to take a COVID-19 vaccine, and 61.4% reported that they would accept their employer’s recommendation to do so. Differences in acceptance rates ranged from almost 90% (in China) to less than 55% (in Russia). Respondents reporting higher levels of trust in information from government sources were more likely to accept a vaccine …

One of the biggest challenges during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues to be the detection of asymptomatic and presymptomatic persons infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Persons infected with SARS-CoV-2 who do not have symptoms of COVID-19 may transmit the virus to others and may have subclinical lung abnormalities. Some hospitals use SARSCoV-2 antigen tests for pre-admission screening testing because they are relatively inexpensive, have a rapid turnaround time, and can be performed at the point of care; however, antigen tests are generally less sensitive than nucleic acid amplification tests with reverse transcription polymerase chain …

Covid-19 Treatment Resource Disparities And Social Disadvantage In New York City, Jason A. Douglas, Andrew M. Subica

Health Sciences and Kinesiology Faculty Articles

Black and Hispanic communities in the U.S. have endured a disproportionate burden of COVID-19-related morbidity and mortality. Racial and ethnic health disparities such as these are frequently aggravated by inequitable access to healthcare resources in disadvantaged communities. Yet, no known studies have investigated disadvantaged communities' access to COVID-19-related healthcare resources. The current study accordingly examined racial and ethnic differences in (1) April 2020 COVID-19 total and positive viral test rates across 177 New York City (NYC) ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTA); and (2) November 2019–April 2020 licensed and intensive care unit (ICU) hospital bed access across 194 NYC ZCTAs. Pairwise …

It is that time. We are excited and ready to welcome everyone to campus for Fall Term 2020 on October 5 (Monday). But with that comes an important reminder that all students, faculty and staf are expected to demonstrate personal responsibility and compliance to outlined guidelines to keep our campus community safe. Our success is dependent on all of our actions.

Pandemic Profiles: Annabelle Brown And The Wisdom Of Gardening Resilience, Karen Romero

COVID-19 @ Whittier (full list of items)

As I begin talking to Annabelle Brown on what could be any forgettable October morning, she instantly reminds me of the girls I grew up with in Southern California: warm, accepting, and distinctly in touch with their own version of cool. Even through the socially strained and limited setting of zoom, Brown radiates an effortlessly kind and comfortable personality that feels familiar and genuine. This familiarity isn’t unfounded. Brown grew up on a farm in Walnut, California, a neighboring city of where I was raised.

Chelo Ferschweiler’s bedroom walls are painted bright blue and have sticky notes haphazardly attached to them. When we spoke over Zoom, the small yellow squares caught my attention because I also keep sticky notes on my wall that contain ideas for stories and poems. I asked Ferschweiler what she’s written and she told me she jots down ideas that inspire her to write creatively. My ears perk at the mention of our shared passion — creative writing.

An Augmented Reality Multimedia Learning Platform Assisting Online Lecture Delivery Of Engineering Classes: An Hvac Course, Huojan Yang, Jiaming Zhao, Tianyi Liang, Siqing Zheng, Nikolas R. Kukert, Jun Kong

ASEE North Midwest Section Annual Conference 2020 Publications

Background: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has recently resulted in an emergent shift of traditional instruction to (presumably temporary) online delivery, and many students were not able to participate in practical activities (e.g., laboratory experiments) due to inaccessible or unavailable “brick and mortar” laboratories. Purpose: This works-in-progress paper developed a multimedia learning platform with virtual laboratory modules through an Augmented Reality (AR) environment, where virtual objects (augmented components) are superimposed onto a real learning setting during online lecture instruction. Specifically, to facilitate students’ gaining practical skills, a library of virtual objects were established for the main physical components or systems related …
