This report summarizes some of the major findings of a survey of 749 Massachusetts adults which focuses on matters related to race, public policy, confidence in public institutions, and political behavior. Since a principal objective of the poll is to elicit views from diverse perspectives, the respondents include significant numbers from all major racial groups: Whites (N=100), Latinos (N=113), Asian Americans (N=103), and Blacks and African Americans (N=100). The data was collected in October and November 2006. On some items, there are comparisons with data derived from a similar poll conducted in 1998.
The poll was undertaken during a time …

Lianas (woody vines) contribute substantially to the diversity and structure of most tropical forests, yet little is known about the importance of habitat specialization in maintaining tropical liana diversity and the causes of variation among forests in liana abundance and species composition. We examined habitat associations, species diversity, species composition, and community structure of lianas at Sepilok Forest Reserve, Sabah, Malaysia in northeastern Borneo among three soil types that give rise to three distinct forest types of lowland tropical rain forest: alluvial, sandstone hill, and kerangas (heath) forest. Alluvial soils are more nutrient rich and have higher soil moisture than …

Identity And Self-Other Differentiation In Work And Giving Behaviors: Experimental Evidence, Avner Ben-Ner, Brian P. Mccall, Massoud Stephane, Hua Wang
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
We show that the distinction between Self and Other, ‘us’ and ‘them,’ or in-group and out-group, affects significantly economic and social behavior. In a series of experiments with approximately 200 Midwestern students as our subjects, we found that they favor those who are similar to them on any of a wide range of categories of identity over those who are not like them. Whereas family and kinship are the most powerful source of identity in our sample, all 13 potential sources of identity in our experiments affect behavior. We explored individuals’ willingness to give money to imaginary people, using a …

John Laband Lecture, Department Of History
Cultural Affairs Distinguished Lecture Series
Application to support The History Department's 2006-2007 Colloquium Series. Its annual series of talks is designed to support both the curricular and scholarly interests of undergraduates, graduates and faculty in History and to reach out to interested faculty and students in other disciplines at the University of Maine. This would be the first speaker the History Department has brought to campus (in our institutional memory) who has lectured on a topic of African history.

Acting On The Commitment The Continuing Case For Diversity In Higher Education And Current Challenges, Nancy Cantor

I’m delighted to speak with you today and to say how much I admire the work of the National Council for Research on Women for making clear the many ways that the talents of the nation’s majority population---more than 149 million girls and women---are still largely untapped in the nation’s corporate boardrooms, the professions, and in the halls of influence and power.
Expanding Diversity For Mature Part-Time Craftspersons, Kevin Kelly
Expanding Diversity For Mature Part-Time Craftspersons, Kevin Kelly
Conference papers
This paper, originally presented at the World Conference for Continuing Engineering Education (WCCEE) in Vienna in April 20006, examines how the Engineering Faculty in the Dublin Institute of Technology is coping with change on its part-time accredited engineering programmes as it widens access and moves to constructivist learning approaches on one new degree programme. A comparison is made between this programme and a more traditional academic programme. This move though largely successful, has led to some unexpected results.
Representative Government, Representative Court? The Supreme Court As A Representative Body, Angela Onwuachi-Willig
Representative Government, Representative Court? The Supreme Court As A Representative Body, Angela Onwuachi-Willig
Faculty Scholarship
In this Symposium Essay, I propose, as a thinking matter, that we expand the number of Supreme Court justices to increase the representation of various demographic groups on the Court. In Part I, I advance the argument that the Court should be regarded as a demographically representative body of the citizens of the United States, and in Part II, I argue that the Court should be enlarged to ensure diverse representation of all voices on the most powerful judicial body of our nation.

Education And Training In I-O Psychology: Leaving The Psychology Tower: Nontraditional Programs In I/O Psychology, Brigitte Steinheider, David P. Costanza, Jennifer L. Kisamore, Roni Reiter-Palmon

The need for programs that accommodate diverse types of students and adopt an interdisciplinary approach to the study of organizations has led universities with traditional I-O programs to also offer nontraditional programs. Nontraditional programs tend to attract highly heterogeneous sets of students in terms of age and academic and professional backgrounds or may be tailored for special types of students. Due to the mixed student population and high percentage of working adults, nontraditional programs tend to be more application and applied-research oriented than their traditional program counterparts.
Faculty, students, and administrators of nontraditional programs face a variety of challenges. In …

Some Reflections On The Diversity Of Corporate Boards: Women, People Of Color, And The Unique Issues Associated With Women Of Color, Lisa M. Fairfax
Faculty Scholarship
As one might expect, there are many similarities between the circumstances of women directors and directors of color, which includes African Americans, Latinos, and Asian Americans. Indeed, both groups began appearing on corporate boards in significant numbers during the same period—right after the Civil Rights Movement pursuant to which the push for racial equality throughout society precipitated efforts to achieve greater representation of people of color as well as women on corporate boards. Moreover, while women and people of color have experienced some increase in board representation over the last few decades, both groups also have encountered significant barriers to …

The National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act of 1997 includes the nation’s broadest statutory commitment to ecosystem protection: to “ensure that the biological integrity, diversity, and environmental health of the system are maintained.” The act also directs the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to expand the scope of conservation monitoring, assessment, and management beyond refuge boundaries to encompass surrounding landscapes. The act thus gives the FWS a leadership role in developing research and management partnerships with other agencies, organizations, and neighboring landowners. Increasing research capacity and scientific expertise, and strengthening institutional resolve to limit activities that impede the attainment …

Assessing The Health Of Fringing Salt Marshes Along The Fore River And Its Tributaries, Pamela A. Morgan, Lucas Curci, Cayce Dalton, Jeremy Miller

Casco Bay has experienced two significant oil spills in recent history - the Tamano Tanker spill in 1972 and the Julie N spill in 1996. In addition, the Fore River and its tributaries have experienced numerous small spills over the years, including the August 2002 fuel oil spill (2,900 gallons) and the April 2003 jet fuel spill (6,000 gallons). The impacts of these spills on the fringing salt marshes that line the edges of the Fore River and its tributaries are not well understood. Are these salt marshes resilient enough to withstand these impacts and still act as healthy marshes …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
The task of improving the supply quality and maintaining supply continuity during emergencies has become more feasible for a distribution company (DISCO), owing to new developments in Distributed Generation (DG) technologies. Even though the technical issues regarding DG interconnection to the main grid are of great importance and are being addressed by on-going research, it must be clearly placed in the context of on the financial performance of the utility. In this paper, a general approach to quantify the technical benefits of DG employment is proposed. The power system economic impact is assessed by evaluating supply quality, supply reliability, system …

The 3rd Annual APSA Conference on Teaching and Learning in Political Science hosted over 300 participants in lively discussions of trends, techniques, and models in teaching in political science. Held in downtown Washington, D.C. on February 18-20, the Conference was organized as a workshop-based forum to develop models of teaching and learning as well as to discuss broad themes affecting political science education today. Joining the discussion, APSA President Ira Katznelson (Columbia University) and keynote speaker Thomas E. Cronin (Colorado College) shared their thoughts on teaching and learning in the discipline.
