Relaxation Rate And Polarization Charge Density Model For Aln/Al$_{X}$Ga$_{1 - X}$N/Aln Heterostructures, Nagarajan Sivarajan, Reeba Korah, Mariya Kalavathy Ganamani

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This work describes the strain-relaxation--dependent carrier concentration ($n_{s})$ profile model using spontaneous and piezoelectric polarization for AlN/Al$_{x}$Ga$_{1 - x}$N/AlN HEMTs in all mole fraction ($x)$ interpolations. As $x$ varies, the Aluminum Gallium Nitride (AlGaN) channel shows strain relaxation with the Aluminum Nitride (AlN) barrier. The degree of relaxation is modeled from AlN to GaN regions in the channel. It shows that the AlN barrier and buffer relaxation and strain recovery occurs due to the gradual crystal quality degradation from barrier/buffer to the channel interface. These combination devices show less drain current degradation with temperature variation from 300 K to 573 …

Modeling And Simulation Of 2.5 Mva Sf6-Gas-Insulated Transformer, Okan Özgönenel, David Thomas Jan 2017

Modeling And Simulation Of 2.5 Mva Sf6-Gas-Insulated Transformer, Okan Özgönenel, David Thomas

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In recent years, environmental awareness has been a great concern, and even governments have sometimes been under pressure to comply with bilateral agreements. Mineral oil/epoxy cast resins are one of the most harmful soil pollutants. Of course, they provide a good insulation material in (distribution/power) transformers, but they present some disadvantages, such as low ignition point, additional insulation costs, requirement for an extinguishing apparatus, long clearance distance, toxicity, costly decontamination, and explosion risk. For this reason, gas-insulated transformers have nowadays been put into specifications. % This paper investigates SF6-gas-insulated transformer (GIT) designs for the complex distribution transformer model, i.e. 2.5 …

Calculation Of Creepage Discharge Safety Factors Against The Tangential Component Of Electric Fields In The Insulation Structure Of Power Transformers, Arsalan Hekmati Jan 2017

Calculation Of Creepage Discharge Safety Factors Against The Tangential Component Of Electric Fields In The Insulation Structure Of Power Transformers, Arsalan Hekmati

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Creepage discharges are a main cause of insulation damage in power transformers during repeated tests or during operation. In this paper, a hazardous region in the insulation structure of power transformers (the interface between solid and liquid insulation at the top edge of a high-voltage electrode) is considered, and the impact of a very important factor of the surface discharge initiation and propagation (the tangential component of the electric field) on the strength of the insulation structure is investigated in power transformers. Insulation system reliability against this tangential component is presented as a safety factor. Two methods based on cumulative …

A Linear Magnetorheological Brake With Multipole Outer Coil Structure For High On-State And Low Off-State Force Outputs, Özgür Başer, Mehmet Alper Demi̇ray, Aytuğ Baş, Ergi̇n Kiliç, Gali̇p Ozan Erol

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A wide range of braking forces, from near zero to high values, is required in specific applications such as forces in haptic devices or steering stability in motorcycles. Classical piston cylinder type magnetorheological (MR) brakes are not suitable for these applications due to their high off-state forces. In this paper, a new linear type MR brake employing shear mode braking principle with a multipole outer coil structure is presented for high on-state and low off-state force outputs. To implement this device, an analytical model of the brake is derived by using magnetic circuit analysis to determine braking force. Magnetic finite …

In this work, a new and secure digital image scrambling algorithm for grayscale images is presented. The main goal of this algorithm is to change and reorder the positions of the pixel values of the grayscale images according to the rules of Conway's Game of Life. For this purpose, an image scrambling matrix is proposed. The proposed algorithm is mostly applied to known benchmark images of various sizes and histograms. Moreover, the proposed algorithm is applied to noisy and low-contrast images to evaluate the performance of the algorithm in consumer applications. The scrambling performance of the algorithm is examined through …

Lossless Predictive Coding Of Electric Signal Waveforms, Krzysztof Duda Jan 2017

Lossless Predictive Coding Of Electric Signal Waveforms, Krzysztof Duda

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper describes a new predictive coding algorithm designed for lossless compression of electric signal waveforms. Prediction coefficients are obtained from the sinusoidal signal autoregressive model. Predictors for a single sinusoid and the sum of two and three sinusoids are considered. Integer-to-integer coding is obtained by the proper (i.e. reversible) quantization of computations. The proposed coding algorithm shows better performance than the commonly used 2nd order differences coding and linear prediction coding that is optimal in the least squares sense.

Heuristic Algorithm-Based Estimation Of Rotor Resistance Of An Induction Machine By Slot Parameters With Experimental Verification, Mehmet Çelebi̇, Murat Tören Jan 2017

Heuristic Algorithm-Based Estimation Of Rotor Resistance Of An Induction Machine By Slot Parameters With Experimental Verification, Mehmet Çelebi̇, Murat Tören

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The estimations of induction machine equivalent circuit parameters are still being widely used in the analysis and in determining the characteristics of the machine. Since the most important part of the machine is the rotor where torque is produced, the calculation of rotor resistance correctly will directly affect all other data. Almost all parameters belonging to the stator side can easily be determined through external measurements. However, due to the formulation of the rotor as a closed box, estimating rotor resistance and the rotor's slot shape by heuristic algorithms, without damaging the rotor physically, and comparing it with its actual …

Performance Comparison Of The Notable Acceleration- And Angle-Based Guidance Laws For A Short-Range Air-To-Surface Missile, Bülent Özkan, Mustafa Kemal Özgören, Gökmen Mahmutyazicioğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Short-range air-to-surface missiles have become globally popular in the last two decades. As a performance driver, the type of guidance law gains importance. In this study, proportional navigation, velocity pursuit, and augmented proportional navigation guidance laws, whose resulting guidance commands take the form of lateral acceleration, are applied to a short-range air-to-surface missile against both stationary and maneuvering ground targets. Body pursuit and linear homing guidance laws, which yield angular commands, are additionally applied. Having completed the relevant computer simulations, we conclude that none of the acceleration- and angle-based guidance laws are absolutely superior to the others.

A New Word-Based Compression Model Allowing Compressed Pattern Matching, Hali̇l Nusret Buluş, Aydin Carus, Altan Mesut

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study a new semistatic data compression model that has a fast coding process and that allows compressed pattern matching is introduced. The name of the proposed model is chosen as tagged word-based compression algorithm (TWBCA) since it has a word-based coding and word-based compressed matching algorithm. The model has two phases. In the first phase a dictionary is constructed by adding a phrase, paying attention to word boundaries, and in the second phase compression is done by using codewords of phrases in this dictionary. The first byte of the codeword determines whether the word is compressed or not. …

A Reduced-Order Observer Based On Stator Flux Estimation With Straightforward Parameter Identification For Sensorless Control Of Dfigs, Rahim Ajabi Farshbaf, Mohammad Reza Azizian, Vahid Eslampanah

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a new reducer-order observer for sensorless control of doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs), based on the Luenberger algorithm. Stable operation of the suggested observer is also considered in the design guidelines. Stator flux is selected as the state variable for the observer and its estimation error is used to correct the observer operation. The gain matrix of the proposed observer is calculated on the basis of flux error dynamics. The adaptation mechanism of the proposed observer is selected based on an estimation of rotor currents. A proportional integrator (PI) block is used in the structure of the …

On The Independence Of Statistical Randomness Tests Included In The Nist Test Suite, Fati̇h Sulak, Muhi̇ddi̇n Uğuz, Onur Koçak, Ali̇ Doğanaksoy

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Random numbers and random sequences are used to produce vital parts of cryptographic algorithms such as encryption keys and therefore the generation and evaluation of random sequences in terms of randomness are vital. Test suites consisting of a number of statistical randomness tests are used to detect the nonrandom characteristics of the sequences. Construction of a test suite is not an easy task. On one hand, the coverage of a suite should be wide; that is, it should compare the sequence under consideration from many different points of view with true random sequences. On the other hand, an overpopulated suite …

Force And Torque Parameter Estimation For A 4-Pole Hybrid Electromagnet By Anfis Hybrid Learning Algorithm, Murat Atlihan, Bariş Can Yalçin, Kadi̇r Erkan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a force and torque estimation method based on an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) has been developed to get rid of multiple integral calculations of air gap coefficients that cause time delay for magnetic levitation control applications. During magnetic levitation applications that contain a 4-pole hybrid electromagnet, multiple integral calculations have to be done for obtaining air gap permanence parameters, and these parameters are needed to calculate force and torque parameters that are produced by the poles of the hybrid electromagnet, which means, if time delay occurs for calculation of permanence parameters, actual force and actual torque …

Using The Variable Width In A Planar Inductor On Kapton For Optimizing Its Performance, Hayet Kharbouch, Azzedine Hamid, Thierry Lebey, Vincent Bley, Leon Havez, Celine Combette

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we examine the design of planar inductors and consider an expansion of the conductor to reduce its resistance. An increase in the number of turns increases the proximity effect, capacitive coupling, and skin effect. The resulting effect will translate into an increase in the area occupied by the inductor and a decrease in the inductors' performances. In order to solve such difficulties, an alternative approach is to design tapered inductors. For the same electrical and geometrical characteristics, a tapered inductor occupies a larger area than a standard inductor. Our approach consists of designing a new concept regarding …

Median Filtering Detection Based On Variations And Residuals In Image Forensics, Kang Hyeon Rhee Jan 2017

Median Filtering Detection Based On Variations And Residuals In Image Forensics, Kang Hyeon Rhee

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

To attain a robust feature vector for median filtering detection (MFD) in digital forgery images, this paper presents a short feature vector that is made up of three types of feature sets. The first set is defined by the variation to be the 3-D length in the gradient difference of the intensity values of the adjacent row and column line pairs in the image, respectively. The second set is defined by the variation in the coefficient difference of the Fourier transform to be the 3-D length in the adjacent line pairs. The last set is defined by the residual image …

A New Approach To Pulse Deinterleaving Based On Adaptive Thresholding, Mostafa Bagheri, Mohammad Hossein Sedaaghi Jan 2017

A New Approach To Pulse Deinterleaving Based On Adaptive Thresholding, Mostafa Bagheri, Mohammad Hossein Sedaaghi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Since histogram-based methods are formed by some simple differences, they are very desirable for deinterleaving. However, their main imperfection concerns recognizing complex pulse repetition interval (PRI) patterns like jittered and staggered ones.In this paper, we present new thresholds to detect jittered and staggered PRI from histogram-based methods even in complex circumstances such as noisy time of arrival (TOA), complex PRI patterns, and large missing pulses. Simulation results demonstrate that our method can detect and extract constant, jittered, and staggered PRI correctly. Moreover, the method is proved to be considerably robust and reliable at a missing pulses rate up to 30%.

Fault Location In Distribution Systems With Dg Based On Similarity Of Fault Impedance, Zahra Moravej, Omid Hajhossani, Mohammad Pazoki

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a new method for locating a fault in distribution systems using the similarity of fault impedance. A four-step approach is proposed to locate the fault in the networks. First, pre- and during-fault voltages from smart feeders along the primary feeders are measured. Second, three-phase impedance to calculate fault current corresponding to voltage deviation from each smart meter is achieved. Third, a relation between fault current and fault impedance for each type of fault is extracted. Finally, based on the similarity of the estimated fault impedance for each bus, an error index is calculated. Moreover, an auxiliary process …

Robust Control For Line-Of-Sight Stabilization Of A Two-Axis Gimbal System, Mehmet Baskin, Mehmet Kemal Leblebi̇ci̇oğlu Jan 2017

Robust Control For Line-Of-Sight Stabilization Of A Two-Axis Gimbal System, Mehmet Baskin, Mehmet Kemal Leblebi̇ci̇oğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Line-of-sight stabilization against various disturbances is an essential property of gimbaled imaging systems mounted on mobile platforms. In recent years, the importance of target detection from higher distances has increased. This has raised the need for better stabilization performance. For that reason, stabilization loops are designed such that they have higher gains and larger bandwidths. As these are required for good disturbance attenuation, sufficient loop stability is also needed. However, model uncertainties around structural resonances impose strict restrictions on sufficient loop stability. Therefore, to satisfy high stabilization performance in the presence of model uncertainties, robust control methods are required. In …

Experimental Analysis Of The Temperature Dependence Of The Brillouin Gain Spectrum In Short-Length Single-Mode Fiber, Murat Yücel, Hali̇m Haldun Göktaş, Murat Yücel, Nai̇l Ferhat Öztürk, Abdullah Erkam Gündüz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The Brillouin backscattered wave was examined in a short-length single-mode fiber at different ambient temperatures using a 1553-nm wavelength laser source. To obtain Brillouin scattering depending on the temperature change in a 95-m long single-mode fiber cable, the Brillouin optical time domain reflectometry (BOTDR) technique was used. In this technique, a 1553 nm wavelength signal was sent from one side of the test fiber. The FC/APC connector was attached to the other end of the test fiber. The temperature parameters of the single-mode fiber cables of different brands and types can be obtained using Brillouin scattering. The Brillouin frequency shift …

Inverse Kinematics Of A 7-Dof Redundant Robot Manipulator Using The Active Set Approach Under Joint Physical Limits, Modjtaba Rouhani, Sima Ebrahimabadi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a new approach for an online solution of the inverse kinematics problem based on nonlinear optimization for robots with joint physical constraints. The inverse kinematics problem is stated as a constrained nonlinear optimization problem and is solved using Kuhn--Tucker conditions analysis. The nonlinear multivariable optimization problem is locally converted into independent local linear constrained subproblems and each subproblem is analytically solved. For each joint, position limits and velocity limits are considered as physical constraints. The proposed structure benefits from a very low complexity design. The proposed method is fast and requires few calculations. The convergence of the …

Generalized Referenceless Image Quality Assessment Framework Using Texture Energy Measures And Pattern Strength Features, Jayashri Bagade, Kulbir Singh, Yogesh Dandawate Jan 2017

Generalized Referenceless Image Quality Assessment Framework Using Texture Energy Measures And Pattern Strength Features, Jayashri Bagade, Kulbir Singh, Yogesh Dandawate

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Referenceless image quality assessment is a challenging and critical problem in today's multimedia applica\-tions. Texture patterns in images are normally at high frequencies compared to lower ones. Due to the effect of distortions during acquisition, compression, and transmission, texture deviation artifacts are generated that cause a granular effect in the image. Other artifacts, such as blocking, affect high frequencies in an image, causing distorted edges. Combining the analysis of texture deviation and other artifacts helps in determining the quality of an image. The proposed approach uses variation in the energy of pixels to quantify the quality of an image. These …

S-Visibility Problem In Vlsi Chip Design, Marzieh Eskandari, Mahdieh Yeganeh Jan 2017

S-Visibility Problem In Vlsi Chip Design, Marzieh Eskandari, Mahdieh Yeganeh

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a new version of very large scale integration (VLSI) layouts compaction problem is considered. Bar visibility graph (BVG) is a simple geometric model for VLSI chip design and layout problems. In all previous works, vertical bars or other chip components in the plane model gates, as well as edges, are modeled by horizontal visibilities between bars. In this study, for a given set of vertical bars, the edges can be modeled with orthogonal paths known as staircases. Therefore, we consider a new version of bar visibility graphs (BsVG). We then present an algorithm to solve the s-visibility …

A Novel Optical Flow-Based Representation For Temporal Video Segmentation, Samet Akpinar, Ferdanur Alpaslan Jan 2017

A Novel Optical Flow-Based Representation For Temporal Video Segmentation, Samet Akpinar, Ferdanur Alpaslan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Temporal video segmentation is a field of multimedia research enabling us to temporally split video data into semantically coherent scenes. In order to develop methods challenging temporal video segmentation, detecting scene boundaries is one of the more widely used approaches. As a result, representation of temporal information becomes important. We propose a new temporal video segment representation to formalize video scenes as a sequence of temporal motion change information. The idea here is that some sort of change in the optical flow character determines motion change and cuts between consecutive scenes. The problem is eventually reduced to an optical flow-based …

Low-Frequency Exposure Analysis Using Electric And Magnetic Field Measurements And Predictions In The Proximity Of Power Transmission Lines In Urban Areas, Hamza Feza Carlak, Şükrü Özen, Süleyman Bi̇lgi̇n

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In recent years, increasing energy demand has resulted in more loading in power transmission lines and correspondingly more electric and magnetic field occurrence. In this paper, electric and magnetic field levels around high voltage power transmission lines are measured and then calculated analytically by simulating the realistic case. Moreover, the field levels around these power lines have been predicted using multilayer perceptron artificial neural network (ANN) and generalized regression neural network models. Typical 154 kV power transmission line facilities of Turkey have been studied. Electric and magnetic field levels in the proximity of power transmission lines have been predicted with …

Ekf-Based Self-Regulation Of An Adaptive Nonlinear Pi Speed Controller For A Dc Motor, Omer Saleem, Urwa Omer Jan 2017

Ekf-Based Self-Regulation Of An Adaptive Nonlinear Pi Speed Controller For A Dc Motor, Omer Saleem, Urwa Omer

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a robust adaptive nonlinear proportional--integral (ANPI) scheme to control the speed of a direct-current (DC) motor. Unlike proportional--integral--derivative (PID) controllers, PI controllers have a simpler structure and they deliver effective control effort. However, due to inadequate controller gains, they are often unable to simultaneously improve the transient as well as the steady-state response of the system. A nonlinear PI (NPI) controller alleviates these issues and delivers a good response. In this research, the proportional and integral gains of the NPI controller are dynamically modulated via a nonlinear sigmoidal function (SiF) of the error dynamics of the motor's …
