North Korean Illicit Activities And Sanctions: A National Security Dilemma, Bruce E. Bechtol Jr. Dec 2017

North Korean Illicit Activities And Sanctions: A National Security Dilemma, Bruce E. Bechtol Jr.

Cornell International Law Journal

North Korea is a nation-state that for many years (including the years following the Cold War) has been off of the main radar for American foreign policy. Whether it was because the United States was worried about other issues such as problems in the Balkans in the 1990s, or fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in the new millennium, challenges from the DPRK never seemed to be at the top of the priorities list with American foreign policy makers. This has now changed. It has become obvious to the world that North Korea has an active nuclear weapons program, and …

What Is The Effect Of Being Bullied?: Comparing Direct Harms Of Bullying Experienced By Lgb And Non-Lgb Students, Lynn A. Addington

Journal of Family Strengths

In the United States, bullying against lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, and queer (LGBTQ) students is garnering greater attention from scholars, policymakers and school officials. This interest has prompted research that is providing a better understanding of these experiences, especially the frequency with which LGBTQ students are bullied. Less is known about the direct consequences of being bullied and how these harms might vary between LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ students. The present study begins to address this issue with a focus on students bullied due to their sexual orientation. Specifically, this study uses a nationally representative sample of 12- to 18-year-old students …

Links Between Social Support, Thwarted Belongingness, And Suicide Ideation Among Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual College Students, Ryan M. Hill, Evan E. Rooney, Megan A. Mooney, Julie B. Kaplow

Journal of Family Strengths

Emerging adults with a lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) identity are at greater risk for engaging in suicide-related behaviors. This disparity highlights a need to elucidate specific risk and protective factors associated with suicide-related behaviors among LGB youth, which could be utilized as targets for suicide prevention efforts in this population. Informed by the interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide, the present study hypothesized that social support would be indirectly associated with decreased suicide ideation via lower thwarted belongingness. A sample of 50 emerging adults (62.0% male, 70.0% Hispanic) who identified as gay, lesbian, bisexual, questioning, or “other” orientation, with a mean …

The Intersection Of Cisgenderism And Hate Crime: Learning From Trans People's Narratives, Michaela M. Rogers Dec 2017

The Intersection Of Cisgenderism And Hate Crime: Learning From Trans People's Narratives, Michaela M. Rogers

Journal of Family Strengths

Whilst trans people are gaining recognition and positive attention in some respects, many continue to experience discrimination and social exclusion in everyday life. This paper will illuminate violence outside the home – in the form of hate crime – and the interplay with transphobia (the irrational dislike of trans people) and cisgenderism (a prejudicial ideology based on notions of gender normativity). To-date, there is a rather limited body of work detailing trans people’s experiences of hate crime, with the tendency to subsume trans people’s narratives under the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) umbrella. This invisibility results in problems with …

Definition, Assessment And Treatment Of Visual Dependence, Shu-Chun Lee

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Effective orientation and balance are based on the integration of visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive sensory inputs. Vision plays a significant role in spatial orientation and posture maintenance; however, a static tilted frame or dynamic rotating visual disturbance can affect orientation and balance. Visual dependence (VD) is a term used to describe people who overly rely on visual information. Individuals with VD have difficulty in resolving situations wherein visual information is complex or inaccurate. They show greater postural instability and complain of incidences of dizziness and vertigo in sensory conflicting conditions, such as walking along the pavement or the aisle of …

Viscosity Of Commercial Thickeners At A Honey- Or Nectar-Like Consistency And Their Changes Over Time, Wei-Chun Che, Meng-I Kuo, Tsan-Hon Liou, Yuan-Ching Tsai

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Background: Patients with dysphagia often have difficulties in swallowing liquids. Using thickened liquids is a compensatory strategy frequently recommended by speech-language pathologists to reduce the risk of aspiration in patients with dysphagia . However, the thickening effects might vary with time and different thickening products. Furthermore, the desired viscosity might not be attained. This study investigated the viscosity of water that was thickened to a nectar- or honey-like consistency by using five thickening products marketed in Taiwan. The viscosity of the samples at different time periods was compared. The results were also compared with the guidelines of the National Dysphagia …

Prediction Of Peak Oxygen Consumption In Patients With Cardiac Disease Using A 3 Minutes' Step Test Combined With Heart Rate Variability., Chia-Hao Liu, Shu-Chun Huang, Jong-Shyan Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Background: Peak oxygen consumption (Peak VO_2) is a recognized indicator of overall functions of the cardiac-vascular system, and the cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) is considered the golden standard for determining peak VO_2. However, there are limitations to performing CPET, including high cost, long testing time, staff risks and participant’s discomfort during the test. In contrast, Submaximal exercise testing can be an alternative for assessing cardiovascular fitness with minimal risk and lower cost. The step test, one of the submaximal exercise tests, was the first to be described as a method for assessing exercise capacity in the early 20th century. Various …

The Reluctance Of Civil Law Systems In Adopting The Ucc Article 9 “Without Breach Of Peace” Standard—Evidence From National And International Legal Instruments Governing Secured Transactions, Asress Adimi Gikay, Cătălin Gabriel Stănescu

Journal of Civil Law Studies

One of the defining features of the Uniform Commercial Code Article 9 is the secured creditor’s ability to take possession of the collateral upon the debtor’s default “without breach of peace.” This standard is meant to protect the debtor from abusive secured creditors, the meaning of which has been shaped by courts on a case-by-case basis.

In reforming their secured transactions laws to enhance access to credit, continental legal systems have shown great reception to Article 9 by adopting the unitary concept and functional approach to security interests, introducing private enforcement mechanisms, including various forms of self-help repossession. However, the …
