Genetic modification has been extensively used in crops for 25 years but has rarely been a technology used to advance trait expression in forage and grassland species. The exceptions are the use of herbicide tolerance and low lignin traits in alfalfa which are currently commercially available. In crop species genetic modification has been a valuable option for delivering improved economic and environmental outcomes through providing solutions for many of the challenges facing mankind. As small particles that do not degrade, microplastics harm the environment. Plastics are physically broken down rather than chemically during the traditional recycling process. An insect naturally found in honeybee hives known as the waxworm can break down the most common plastic: polyethylene. A literature review was conducted on a new method to recycle plastics involving the waxworm Galleria mellonella. Literary review studies suggest that recycling using waxworms is more efficient and faster than traditional methods due to oxidation by enzymes. Organ donation shortages paired with high demand present a great issue for the general population. Every year, thousands of patients lay on organ donation waiting lists and never receive their necessary care. The increased research and success into 3D printed organs could solve many of these problems regarding demand, in addition to solving other biotechnological issues. As with every emerging biotechnology, the implications of its introduction must be established. Grassland scientists and farmers are increasingly faced with emerging new technologies and in-formation systems that have been primarily developed by engineering sciences in particular: precision agriculture, remote sensing, geographic localization and biotechnology. Whether the implementation of any of these technologies may be beneficial in economic and ecological respect is a challenging judgment call, especially for those who have to carry over that decision on their farm. Bacteriophages (phages) are viruses that infect their host and cannot reproduce independently outside of them. The application of bacteriophages in the biotechnology and medical sectors has recently increased, including uses as a potential antibacterial agent and CRISPR technology. In this project, the 48,667 to 58,636 base pair region (genes 87-98) of the Corazon phage genome was annotated by five student researchers at Purdue University. Corazon, a cluster S phage was isolated at Lafayette College in Easton, PA. Corazon belongs to the Siphoviridae morphotype and its genome consists of 109 genes. The common yeast infection, vulvovaginal candidiasis, affects three out of four women throughout their lifetime and can be spread to their child in the form of oral candidiasis (thrush). This disease is caused by the fungal pathogen Candida albicans, which is also a major cause of systemic candidiasis, a rarer but deadly disease with up to a 49% lethality rate. Current widely-used diagnostic methods include cell cultures, pH tests, and antibody detection, to assist effective treatment. The Calvin-Benson (CBB) cycle is an essential part of nature. This phenomenon allows carbon molecules in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to be converted into useful energy in the form of sugars. Cyanobacteria are single-celled organisms capable of utilizing energy from sunlight to drive this cycle and are also readily engineered. In hopes of improving this cycle, we compared a wild-type version of the Synechocystis PCC6803 cyanobacteria to an engineered version overexpressing the enzyme FBA (fructose-biphosphate aldolase), called 70 glpX, to deduce how the overexpressing strain is able to be more photosynthetically efficient. Benzene, a toxin and carcinogen found in air polluted by cigarette smoke, car exhaust, and industrial processes, is associated with the development of leukemia and lymphoma. Other than avoiding exposure, there is no current method to deter the effects of benzene. One potential strategy to prevent these effects is to engineer the bacteria of the human lung microbiome to degrade benzene. To evaluate this novel approach, we must verify that the bacteria remain viable within the lung microenvironment. In this paper, the complex-step derivative approximation technique will be used for calculating local sensitivity functions. This technique is compared to the finite difference approximation, probably the most used local sensitivity analysis technique. For this comparison, 4 biotechnological models with varying model complexity were used. A well known problem of the finite difference approximation is the choice of a suitable perturbation factor in order to avoid non-linear model effects or numerical errors due to the subtraction of almost equal numbers.
