The Effects Of Hydrocortisone And Caffeine On Memory For Word Lists, Daniel L. Scharf Dec 1988

The Effects Of Hydrocortisone And Caffeine On Memory For Word Lists, Daniel L. Scharf

Theses and Dissertations

Hydrocortisone has frequently been hypothesized to increase arousal. This hypothesis was primarily based on the findings of increased adrenal size in animals who had been exposed to stressful conditions and the enhancement or impairment in cognitive abilities of humans depending on dose. There has been a lack of studies directly looking at the arousal hypothesis of the effects of hydrocortisone. The purpose of this study was to directly assess the effects of hydrocortisone on levels of arousal by manipulating both state and trait arousal. This study used caffeine as a comparison drug that alters state arousal because of its widely …

The Incestuous Family: Development Of An Enmeshed Family Inventory, Loretta M. Petrie

Theses and Dissertations

A systems model has been proposed as useful theoretical framework for the study of incestuous families (Alexander, 1985) and is frequently used in the therapeutic treatment of the victim of sexual abuse and his or her perpetrator (Larson and Maddock, 1986). The purpose of this study was the construction and standardization of an instrument for assessing a multiaxial model of enmeshed and disengaged family systems which is based on the prior work of Minuchin et al. (1978) and Kog et al. (1987).

Minuchin et al. (1978) suggest that enmeshment, conflict-avoidance, over-protectiveness and rigidity are four characteristics that are key to …

Aging, Cognitive Abilities, And Word Frequency As Factors Affecting The Speed Of Lexical Access, Robert A. Laidlaw Dec 1988

Aging, Cognitive Abilities, And Word Frequency As Factors Affecting The Speed Of Lexical Access, Robert A. Laidlaw

Theses and Dissertations

The present study evaluated the impact of age and several individual difference measures on lexical access. Additionally, eight different levels of frequency were evaluated for the stimulus words. These frequency levels were derived from the frequency of usage of these words in common reading materials. The response measured was latency of reading words out loud as they appeared on a screen. The results indicated no difference between older and younger adults on measures of anxiety, depression, or overall health. The older adults scored higher on a measure of vocabulary skills, while the younger adults scored higher on tasks involving abstract …

Napoleon And Russia And The Teaty Of Tilsit: Its Implications For Europe, Paul A. Hefti

Theses and Dissertations

The Treaty of Tilsit of 1807 between Russia and France was a minor slowing of the flow of the Napoleonic Wars that dominated Europe in the early nineteenth century. It united the two nations against Britain, but, in larger terms, it polarized continental Europe into two separate (or distinct) conflicting spheres. The treaty and its effects provided a foreshadowing of post-World War I Europe and the subsequent twentieth-century concept of peaceful coexistence.

The major personalities involved in making the treaty were Alexander I of Russia and Napoleon Bonaparte of France. Their meeting on a boat in the Niemen River had …

Lysosomal Enzymes In Undifferentiated And Differentiated Hl-60 Cells, Julie J. Ackerman

Theses and Dissertations

The human promyelocytic leukemia cell line HL-60 has been studied extensively since the time of it's discovery and has been proven to be a valuable tool for the study of the differentiation process. The capacity of the HL-60 cell line to differentiate to macrophage-like cells, which may be immunologically competent, has proven to be invaluable in the study of these cells as a model for macrophage function. A number of hydrolytic enzymes are characteristically found in macrophages. In an effort to further characterize diferentiated HL-60 cells as macrophages, the location and concentration of a number of these enzymes was determined. …
