A Study Of The Effects Of Polyethylene Glycol On Interactions Between Glycolytic Enzymes And F-Actin, And Among Glycolytic Enzymes, Julie L. Walsh

Theses and Dissertations

Many studies of the protein interactions that compose the microtrabecular lattice have been done in dilute solutions. However, solutions containing inert polymers such as polyethylene glycol (PEG) more effectively mimic the crowded interior of the cell. Therefore, the interactions of D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate ketolisomerase (TPI, EC 5.3.1.1), D-phosphoglycerate 2,3-phosphomutase (PGM, EC 5.4.2.1), ATP:3-phospho-D-glycerate 1-phosphotransferase (PGK, EC 2.7.2.3), 2-phospho-D-glycerate hydro-lyase (enolase, EC 4.2.1.11), D-fructose-1,6-bisphosphate D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate lyase (aldolase, 4.1.2.13), D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate:NAD$\sp{+}$ oxidoreductase (GAPDH, EC 5.3.1.1), D-glucose-6-phosphate ketol-isomerase (GPI, EC 5.3.1.9), (S)-lactate:NAD+ oxidoreductase (LDH, EC 1.1.1.27), and ATP:Pyruvate O$\sp2$-phosphotransferase (PK, EC 2.7.1.40) with each other, with ATP:D-fructose-6-phosphate 1-phosphotransferase (PFK, EC 2.7.1.11) and with F-actin have been …

Aspects Of The Jewish Experience In Northern Europe, 800 To 1096, Andrew G. Ziny May 1988

Aspects Of The Jewish Experience In Northern Europe, 800 To 1096, Andrew G. Ziny

Theses and Dissertations

The course of Jewish history in western Europe is varied. Beginning in small communities located in the Roman provinces at the beginning of the Common Era, the Jews spread northward into Germany and France and slowly increased both their population and the number of towns in which they were settled. The expansion of Christian influence among the Gothic tribes created hardships for the Jews, but the rise of the Carolingian empire, Charlemagne's abilities as a statesman, and his desire to create an empire in the style of Rome, helped to enhance the stature of the Jews.

But the advent of …

A History Of School Reoganization In Sargent Country Since 1947, Larry E. Skroch

Theses and Dissertations

Sargent County's school district reorganization story began in 1947. In that year North Dakota's first comprehensive school district law was passed. Sargent County had twenty-nine school districts but needed a larger tax base to improve the quality of education. By November 1947, a County Reorganization Committee was formed and its actions became front-page news. School reorganization ignited great excitement throughout the county, and public interest ran high in 1948 because people worried about losing their schools and about pos sible tax increases. As people took sides, some friend ships were broken; town residents became united in the defense of their …

Cost Control And Pricing Methods For The Small Business, Mikel S. Brantley

Theses and Dissertations

An important part of the American dream is the ability to start and own a business. Hundreds of thousands of new firms are started each year. Small business is the heart of the American economic system and essential to its overall well-being. The failure rate of small businesses, however, is a major concern to businessmen and government at all levels. It causes economic losses to both individuals and taxpayers through increased business loan rates and the costs of bankruptcy filings. A lack of management education is often cited as a direct cause for business failures. Chief among management problems is …

Electrochemical And Surface Enhanced Resonance Raman Study Of Heme Proteins At Bare Metal Electrodes, David Edward Reed Jan 1988

Electrochemical And Surface Enhanced Resonance Raman Study Of Heme Proteins At Bare Metal Electrodes, David Edward Reed

Theses and Dissertations

Direct heterogeneous electron transfer reactions between horse heart cytochrome g_and silver electrodes were investigated by electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical methods. The kinetics of these reactions were established as being quasi-reversible, with a formal heterogeneous rate constant (k°'s,h) ranging between 0.18 - 1.5 x 10-3 cm/s, for both polished and electrochemically roughened silver surfaces. Such reactions were stable and reproducible for over ten hours at room temperature. These results clearly demonstrate that neither electrode surface modification nor the inclusion of mediators is necessary to study electron transfer reactions of heme proteins at metal electrodes.

A crucial factor in obtaining the quasi-reversible …

Study Of The Pioneers Of Providence, Utah And Their Children, Hazel Mclean Tibbitts

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis poses a number of questions about the pioneers and their decendants: Where did the pioneer settlers of Providence come from? What skills and resources did they bring with them to "tame" the wilderness? Did they come as family units or as single men? What happened as the community grew and the resources were limited? Where did the settlers go or what did they do as the land became scarce? Was limited land the reason for the movement out of the community or were there other considerations? What effects did emigration have on the family ties of the second …

Minerva Teichert's Murals: The Motivation For Her Large-Scale Production, Marian Eastwood Wardle Jan 1988

Minerva Teichert's Murals: The Motivation For Her Large-Scale Production, Marian Eastwood Wardle

Theses and Dissertations

It is my thesis that the impetus for Minerva Teichert's prolific mural production came from the lofty ideals of the Beaux Art mural tradition which she encountered and embraced during her studies at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1909 to 1912. Furthermore, it was the great interest in mural decoration during the 1930s, spurred by government patronage, that provided Teichert with the opportunity to apply these ideals to large-scale works.
Research into the Beaux Art mural tradition has been difficult, as recent scholarship on the subject is negligible. An understanding of this early mural movement however, yields a greater …

Mapping enlarged the known geographic distribution of this unit and provided an insight into its diagenetic history.

Samples from thirty randomly chosen sites and fifteen grab sites were used to evaluate the …

Corticosteroid Effects And Senescence In Cultured Endothelium, Stephen A. Gudas Jan 1988

Corticosteroid Effects And Senescence In Cultured Endothelium, Stephen A. Gudas

Theses and Dissertations

Cultures of human umbilical vein endothelial cells were treated with heparin-corticosteroid combinations to determine effects on cellular growth. Standard proliferation assays, colony formation assays, and cytoflourometric analysis were the methods employed. Dexamethasone (DEX) and hydrocortisone (HC) were inhibitory to growth of HUVEC when EtOH was used as a solvent and fully supplemented medium (20% serum) was employed. When DMSO was the solvent, growth enhancement sometimes occurred when (DEX) was the test steroid; growth inhibition occurred with this steroid when a reduced (1%) serum component was used. Since significant inhibition of cell colony formation in response to DEX administration was observed, …

Regression Based Allowance Policy Determination Procedures In A General Job Shop: An Evaluation In Terms Of Completion Inaccuracy Penalties, Edward S. Gee Jan 1988

Regression Based Allowance Policy Determination Procedures In A General Job Shop: An Evaluation In Terms Of Completion Inaccuracy Penalties, Edward S. Gee

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the problem of setting due dates to minimize completion inaccuracy penalties in a general job shop environment. In this simulation study, lateness penalties are generated by four defined functions: lateness variance, mean squared lateness, mean absolute lateness, and semi-quadratic lateness. Each of these functions assigns positive penalties to both early and late job completions.

The study proposes and demonstrates the benefits of an iterative simulation-regression procedure in determining allowance policies. Advantages of operation-based dispatching rules over job-based dispatching rules, as well as improvements to traditional methods of setting operation due dates, are demonstrated. Characteristics and benefits of …

Proliferation And Differentiation Of Mast Cell Progenitors, Daniel Lee Jarboe Jan 1988

Proliferation And Differentiation Of Mast Cell Progenitors, Daniel Lee Jarboe

Theses and Dissertations

We have identified a late, committed stage in the differentiation of the mast cell progenitor just prior to granulation. This mast cell-committed progenitor (MCCP) differs from the more primitive bone marrow mast cell progenitor in that it is able to proliferate and differentiate in the absence of interleukin-3 (IL-3) when cultured on a monolayer of embryonic skin or 3T3 fibroblasts. The MCCP can be harvested from the mesenteric lymph nodes of mice in their fourteenth day of infection with the rodent hookworm Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and can be cloned in a methylcellulose culture system by supplementing the cultures with fibroblast-conditioned medium …

Phenotypic And Functional Characterization Of Ia+ And La- Sublines Of The Human Monocyte-Like Cell Line, U937, Coles Meredith Squire

Theses and Dissertations

Sublines were derived from the U937 human monocytic cell line by limiting dilution techniques. Several of the sublines derived in this manner were found to constituitively express la, unlike most U937 cell lines previously examined. Thus the la+ and la- sublines were examined and characterized phenotypically and functionally. Morphologically the sublines, both la+ and la-, were found to be similar to the originally described U937 parent cell line. They were positive for production of non- specific esterase and expressed the HLA phenotype A(3,X), B(51,18), DR(2,X). The sublines were examined by immunofluorescence techniques with a large number of antibodies specific for …

New Antimuscarinic Agents For Improved Treatment Of Poisoning By Cholinesterase Inhibitors, Robert Lee Hudkins Jan 1988

New Antimuscarinic Agents For Improved Treatment Of Poisoning By Cholinesterase Inhibitors, Robert Lee Hudkins

Theses and Dissertations

Poisoning by organophosphate cholinesterase inhibitors results in a rapid rise in acetylcholine (ACh) in the synapse and many pronounced pharmacological effects in numerous tissues in the body. The treatment for organophosphorus poisoning involves administration of a cholinesterase—reactivating oxime to restore the activity of the cholinesterase and an antimuscarinic agent to block the response to the excess ACh. Presently atropine is the standard antimuscarinic agent used clinically as an antidote. This research was directed toward finding an antimuscarinic agent better than atropine as an antidote.

Since caramiphen and aprophen have been reported to be effective antidotes we synthesized numerous structural variations …

Development Of Solid Substrate Luminescence And Chromatographic Techniques For Chemical Analysis, William J. Long Jan 1988

Development Of Solid Substrate Luminescence And Chromatographic Techniques For Chemical Analysis, William J. Long

Theses and Dissertations

Room Temperature Phosphorimetry (RTP) is a sensitive and selective technique which is well suited to the analysis of compounds of environmental and pharmaceutical interests. Absolute sensitivity is generally in the low to subnanograrn range. Selectivity of this technique is due to the fact that only several hundred compounds phosphoresce at room temperature. In these studies attempts are made to gain a greater understanding of the phenomenon of solid substrate room temperature phosphorimetry and to extend the application range of the technique.

This goal is approached through several directions, all leading to a greater understanding of solid substrate luminescence in general, …
