Bench-Scale Study Of Sulfur And Nitrogen Oxides Absoption By Nahcolite And Trona, Frederick R. Stern Dec 1978

Bench-Scale Study Of Sulfur And Nitrogen Oxides Absoption By Nahcolite And Trona, Frederick R. Stern

Theses and Dissertations

The extent and rates of sulfur and nitrogen oxides 'dry' adsorption by nahcolite and trona were measured. Experiments were conducted by passing simulated flue gas through a fixed bed of test material. Variables considered in the study were particle size, reaction temperature, concentration of sulfur dioxide, and concentration of water vapor in the flue gas.

High reaction rates were noted for the adsorption of sulfur dioxide by nahcolite at reaction temperatures of 400-650° F and for particle diameters of 0.19 mm or less. Based on the adsorption of sulfur dioxide, certain tests resulted in nahcolite utilizations of over 95 pet. …

A Study Of A Wind Tunnel Measurement System For Unsteady Pressures Using Pneumatic Transmission Lines, Mohammed Javed Khan

Theses and Dissertations

The application of pneumatic transmission lines theory to a tube-scanning valve system for unsteady pressure measurements in the AFIT 5-foot wind tunnel is investigated. Transfer gains of various tube-scanning valve configurations were experimentally measured and the validity of a theoretical model verified for a frequency range of 20 Hz to 140 Hz. The selected system having a 0.0625-in. ID flexible tube of 84 in. length connected to a scanning valve was installed in the wind tunnel. Unsteady pressures introduced over an 18 percent airfoil at zero angle of attack were measured with this system. Data were collected for 0, 40, …

Modification Of Stimulation Seeking Behavior In Psychopaths Using Hypnotic Sensory Imagery Conditioning, Franklin D. Deforest Dec 1978

Modification Of Stimulation Seeking Behavior In Psychopaths Using Hypnotic Sensory Imagery Conditioning, Franklin D. Deforest

Theses and Dissertations

Recent theorizing has postulated that there exists for every individual an optimal level of arousal. Deviations from this optimal state produce discomfort which motivates behaviors aimed at remediation. Potential causes of underarousal include the attenuation of perceptual input and excessively rapid habituation to sensory input. Both of these processes have been linked dynamically to the psychopathic condition. Presumably, in the context of restricted opportunities for involvement in highly stimulating activities, the psychopathic individual attempts to alleviate the stress caused by chronic sensory deprivation through participation in illegal behaviors. The present investigation has attempted to clarify the dynamic picture with regards …

Effectiveness Of Professionals Vs. Paraprofessionals In The Group Management Of Test Anxiety, Matthew P. Bars

Theses and Dissertations

This research was concerned with the relative effectiveness of professional and paraprofessional therapists in group management of college students exhibiting test anxiety. It was predicted that both the professional and paraprofessional therapists' groups would exhibit significant pre-post decreases in debilitating test anxiety. It was also predicted that there would be no significant pre-post differences between the professional and paraprofessional therapists' groups. Subjects were 26 participants in five Illinois State University Student Counseling Center Test Anxiety Workshops. Subjects completed a modified State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Achievement Anxiety Test at the beginning and end of the test anxiety workshops.

Physical Contact In Psychotherapy, Cassandra Lynne Tyson Aug 1978

Physical Contact In Psychotherapy, Cassandra Lynne Tyson

Theses and Dissertations

Physical contact between therapist and client continues to be an area of both controversy and concern among mental health professionals. Although there has been much theoretical discussion about touching, the literature contains little related empirical research.

Forty undergraduate students participated as subjects in a psychotherapy analogue study. Independent variables were physical con tact and sex of therapist. Dependent variables were subject and thera pist nonverbal immediacy, speech duration, and affective reaction and subject self-disclosure and perception of therapist interpersonal atti tudes. Data on subject experiences with touching and attitudes toward it were also gathered.

The results show no facilitative effects …

The Role Of Emotional Discharge In The Resolution Of Grief, Anne M. Metzger Aug 1978

The Role Of Emotional Discharge In The Resolution Of Grief, Anne M. Metzger

Theses and Dissertations

Many authors have expressed the opinion that the resolution of grief requires the open expression of the emotions accompanying grief. While this need for emotional discharge has been mentioned frequently, there has been no empirical evidence of a connection between emotional discharge and successful grief work. This study was designed to investigate the hypothesis that recently bereaved individuals who reported more emotional discharge behaviors would have a more positive resolution of their grief at four months post-bereavement. It was also hypothesized that the specific type of discharge behavior and the number of individuals involved would not be significant. However, it …

The Phonology Of Texmelucan Zapotec Verb Irregularity, Charles H. Speck Aug 1978

The Phonology Of Texmelucan Zapotec Verb Irregularity, Charles H. Speck

Theses and Dissertations

The phonological rules governing Texmelucan Zapotec verb allomorphy are presented here as part of the phonological component of a generative grammar of the type conceived of by Chomsky and Halle but modified by Stampe, Rhodes and others. This modified theoretical framework has been referred to as natural phonology. Basic to the theory of natural phonology is Stampe's observation that two distinctive types of phonological principles operate in natural languages: natural processes which are innate and rules which are learned. The natural phonemic level is seen to relate to these principles.

In section 1: Lower Level Phonology, those principles which operate …

Jehan Alain: Selected Organ Works, Mark Weston Unkenholz Aug 1978

Jehan Alain: Selected Organ Works, Mark Weston Unkenholz

Theses and Dissertations

This project is a study of selected organ pieces (from the 24 published) of French composer Jehan Alain (1911-1940). Although a catalogue of works of Alain lists 93 titles, the works for organ represent the composer's major field of concentration during the last six years of his life. Alain, who died during World War II at the age of 29, made a significant contribution to the twentieth-century organ repertory despite his short lifetime.

The procedure of study was, first, to examine existing secondary sources--a biography by Bernard Gavoty, and an article on the performance of Alain's organ music by the …
