The Phonology Of Texmelucan Zapotec Verb Irregularity, Charles H. Speck
The Phonology Of Texmelucan Zapotec Verb Irregularity, Charles H. Speck
Theses and Dissertations
The phonological rules governing Texmelucan Zapotec verb allomorphy are presented here as part of the phonological component of a generative grammar of the type conceived of by Chomsky and Halle but modified by Stampe, Rhodes and others. This modified theoretical framework has been referred to as natural phonology. Basic to the theory of natural phonology is Stampe's observation that two distinctive types of phonological principles operate in natural languages: natural processes which are innate and rules which are learned. The natural phonemic level is seen to relate to these principles.
In section 1: Lower Level Phonology, those principles which operate …

Artist's Statement, Margaretha Maria Tettero
Artist's Statement, Margaretha Maria Tettero
Theses and Dissertations
My statement is primarily concerned with the thought that there is an active interaction between what I perceive as speculation and conclusions regarding existential philosophies and the visualization of these perceptions in works of art. Emphasis is placed upon the idea that life and art as processes of thought and action enhance, strengthen and clarify one another in an ongoing development.

A Test Of Carl Gustav Jung's Theory: The Relationship Of Extraversion -- Introversion To Values, Age, Sex, And Familial Status, Paul T. Hirdman
Theses and Dissertations
Problem: The purpose of this study was to compare the Jungian personality types of extraversion and introversion according to sex, age periods, and familial relationship. Another major focus of this study was a comparison of extraversion and introversion with personality values.
Procedure: The subjects in this study consisted of the fathers and mothers, and sons and daughters of 27 families (a total of 112 subjects) who were members of a rural Lutheran Church in North Dakota during 1977.
All subjects were administered the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Form F, the Study of Values, and completed a personal data form. Subjects were …
Prenatal Zinc Deficiency And Stress In The Rat, Michael Charles Rowe
Prenatal Zinc Deficiency And Stress In The Rat, Michael Charles Rowe
Theses and Dissertations
The studies presented below concern the effects of stress upon prenatal zinc deficient adult rats. One group of dams was fed a zinc deficient diet from the morning of day 14 to the morning of day 19 of the pregnancy. A second group was given the same amount of food as was eaten by their zinc deficient counterpart (pair-fed) plus water containing 50 ppm zinc, thus they were not zinc deficient but did experience starvation. A third group was fed the diet ad libitum and given the zinc-supplemented water.
Starting at 150 days of age three offspring from each of …
Bighorn Sheep In North Dakota: Population Estimates, Food Habits And Their Biogeochemistry, Steven D. Fairaizl
Bighorn Sheep In North Dakota: Population Estimates, Food Habits And Their Biogeochemistry, Steven D. Fairaizl
Theses and Dissertations
Ground and aerial surveys conducted during this study revealed that the population size of bighorn sheep in southwestern North Dakota is between 200- 250. The present population began when 18 bighorn sheep from British Columbia were transplanted into an enclosure on Magpie Creek in McKenzie County. All surveys indicated a sex ratio approaching 100:100 with an annual reproductive success of 15-20%. Food habit analysis revealed that approximately 90% of the diet was browse and 10% grass. During spring, fall and winter, the dominant browse species in the diet was winterfat (Eurotia lanata), whereas in the summer buffaloberry (Shepherdia argentea) was …
Hypnotic Age Regression And The Occurrence Of Transitional Object Relationships, Michael Robert Nash
Hypnotic Age Regression And The Occurrence Of Transitional Object Relationships, Michael Robert Nash
Theses and Dissertations
A transitional object, as defined by object-relation theorists is the first treasured possession of the infant (teddy bear, blanket, etc.) usually first appearing in the second half of the first year, and terminating between the ages of four and six. Object relations theory and subsequent empirical investigations have demonstrated that, for almost all three year old children, the relationship with the transitional object: is spontaneously desired during periods of isolation and mild stress, is characterized by attachment to a specific object, and is affectively intense. The present study used these three characteristics of the three year old child's mode of …

Field Independence And Cognitive Flexibility In Creative Test Performance, Joel Patrick Newman
Field Independence And Cognitive Flexibility In Creative Test Performance, Joel Patrick Newman
Theses and Dissertations
Much research in recent years has been devoted to the identification and measurement of creative abilities. It was postulated that Werner's orthogenetic principle, in which development is conceptualized as proceeding from a state of relative lack of differentiation of functions to a state of increasing differentiation, articulation, and hierarchic integration of functions, might be applied to cognitive development in order to provide a useful model for investigating such abilities. A parallel interest of the investigator was the use of the Stroop Color-Word Test as a measure of hierarchic integration of cognitive functions (here called cognitive flexibility).

Calculation Of Galois Groups, Daniel Schnackenberg
Calculation Of Galois Groups, Daniel Schnackenberg
Theses and Dissertations
In the 19th Century Galois developed a method for determining whether an equation is solvable. It relied on the close relationship between fields and their automorphism group. This paper is a survey of the techniques of Galois theory. After presenting the main results of elementary Galois theory and some useful facts about factorization, I develop the important methods of calculating the Galois group and give a proof of the Chebotarev density theorem.

Investigations Of Population Structure And Relative Abundance Of Year-Classes Of Buffalo Fishes, Ictiobus Spp., In Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota, David W. Willis
Theses and Dissertations
This study was undertaken to investigate the population and abundance of year-classes of the buffalo fishes in Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota. Fish used in this study were obtained from Grasteit Dakota Fisheries, a commercial fishing operation headquartered in Newtown, North Dakota.
Only bigmouth buffalo (Ictiobus cyprinelius) and smallmouth buffalo (Ictiobus bubalus) were collected during this study; no black buffalo (Iciobus niger) were captured. The age and growth of these fish was found to be quite similar to that in other Missouri River mainstem reservoirs. The mean condition factor (K-TL) for the bigmouth was found to be 1.88 and for the …

Analysis And Some Of The Obstacles To Inflation Accounting, William W. Kapala
Analysis And Some Of The Obstacles To Inflation Accounting, William W. Kapala
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to peer into the issues and problems of inflationary accounting and provide insight into the obstacles which are generated as a result of any plan to phase an inflationary accounting system into the present historical accounting system.
Chapter I presents a need for a system which can adequately account for fluctuating prices by concentrating primarily on the inadequacies of the historical cost accounting system. Chapter II provides an interesting discussion of the current cost and value accounting systems in relation to the inflationary accounting options available for use within the two systems.
Chapter III …
In Vitro Studies On The Methylation Of Dna In Rat Brain And Liver Chromatin, Douglas P. Quick
In Vitro Studies On The Methylation Of Dna In Rat Brain And Liver Chromatin, Douglas P. Quick
Theses and Dissertations
The properties of DNA methyltransferase in various age rats were investigated to better characterize the enzyme. When purified chromatin from 5-day-old rat brain or liver nuclei was incubated with S-adenosyl-L-[methyl-3H]-methionine, 5-[methyl-3H]methyl-cytosine was the only product of methylation. The optimum pH of the DNA methyltransferase was approximately 8.0 with little or no change in activity over a pH range of 6.9 to 8.3. The Km value of the chromosomal bound DNA methyltransferase for S-adenosyl-L-methionine (AdoMet) was 3.5 ± 0.15 μm and 4.2 ± 0.13 μm, in the liver and brain, respectively. The Vmax values for the enzyme …
Inflation Accounting: Does It Provide Useful Information?, Bryan T. Lawler
Inflation Accounting: Does It Provide Useful Information?, Bryan T. Lawler
Theses and Dissertations
The continuing problem of inflation has spawned a debate among accountants, investors, and businessmen as to whether financial statements based on historical costs with no adjustment for the effects of inflation present an accurate picture of a firm's position. Many of these people feel present financial statements do not present an accurate picture and therefore contend the information in them can be misleading. However, these same people cannot agree as to how best to adjust financial statements to take into account the effects of inflation
The debate, then, focuses on two questions;
Should financial statements be adjusted for the effects …

Stratigraphy Of The Lower Tertiary And Upper Cretaceous (?) Continental Strata In The Canyon Range, Juab County, Utah, James M. Stolle
Stratigraphy Of The Lower Tertiary And Upper Cretaceous (?) Continental Strata In The Canyon Range, Juab County, Utah, James M. Stolle
Theses and Dissertations
The Canyon Range Formation (informal new name), formerly mapped as the Indianola Group within the Canyon Range, is divisible into two distinct, mappable units, A and B. Unit A is nearly all conglomerate strata, and conglomerate texture and sedimentary structures suggest an alluvial fan depositional environment. Precambrian and basal Cambrian quartzite clasts represent the erosional debris from the allochthonous Canyon Range thrust. Unit B is composed of interbedded fluvial sandstone and conglomerates with lacustrine limestones, commonly micritic and/or oncolitic. Conglomerate clasts indicate a Paleozoic carbonate provenance. Unit A, previously mapped as the Indianola, underlies Unit B and correlates with the …

An Analysis Of The Speaking Style Of Heber C. Kimball: Mormon Leader, James Francis O'Connor
An Analysis Of The Speaking Style Of Heber C. Kimball: Mormon Leader, James Francis O'Connor
Theses and Dissertations
The primary function of this thesis was to determine, through the analysis of three randomly selected speeches, the speaking style of Heber C. Kimball. The selected speeches were presented in three different utah locations, and they covered a span of nine years (1856-65). All three speeches were presented to a Mormon audience and were religious in nature.
Seven elements of style have been used for the analysis of the three speeches. They are: accuracy, clarity, propriety, economy, force, striking quality, and liveliness. It was determined that President Kimball's speaking style was weak in the areas of accuracy and clarity. In …
A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas
A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas
Theses and Dissertations
Three general questions concerning literature have been addressed by the writers considered in this thesis: What constitutes a work of literary art? What ought to be valued by Latter-day Saints in a literary work? How should criticism be conducted by Latter-day Saints? To the first question, five basic answers have been proposed: significant form, uplifting thought content clothed in decorative form, typological symbol, ikon (as the word is used by C S lewis in An Experiment in Criticism), and capacity for helping the reader achieve a kind of "negative capability." These definitions also tend to be statements of value, …
