Differential Effects Of Oral Vs. Intravenous Fluid Administration On Bioelectrical Impedance During Dehydration Induced By Exercise And Heat, Sarah J. White, Alan T. Ky, Yasuki Sekiguchi, Grant M. Tinsley
Differential Effects Of Oral Vs. Intravenous Fluid Administration On Bioelectrical Impedance During Dehydration Induced By Exercise And Heat, Sarah J. White, Alan T. Ky, Yasuki Sekiguchi, Grant M. Tinsley
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
There is continued debate regarding optimal evaluation of hydration. Bioimpedance analysis has been utilized to evaluate hydration status, but there is limited information regarding the ability of this technology to detect physiological changes occurring during acute dehydration. PURPOSE: To evaluate whether bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) detects changes in bioelectrical resistance (R) in response to dehydration induced by exercising in the heat, assess whether these changes are related to body mass changes, and determine if the route of fluid administration during the dehydration protocol influences these observations. METHODS: Twelve males (mean ± SD; age: 28.6 ± 12.4 y; body mass: …
Impaired Erythropoietin Response To A Single Session Of Intermittent Hypoxia In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Frank Wojan, Sten Stray-Gundersen, Jiahui Zhao, Sophie Lalande
Impaired Erythropoietin Response To A Single Session Of Intermittent Hypoxia In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Frank Wojan, Sten Stray-Gundersen, Jiahui Zhao, Sophie Lalande
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) exhibit, on average, a 20% decline in maximal oxygen consumption when compared to healthy adults. Hemoglobin mass strongly correlates to maximal oxygen consumption. A reduced total blood volume has been observed in patients with T2D, suggesting that a reduced hemoglobin mass contributes to the decreased maximal oxygen consumption in this population. Hypoxia stimulates the release of erythropoietin (EPO), the hormone regulating red blood cell production. We previously showed that intermittent hypoxia, consisting of alternating short bouts of breathing hypoxic and normoxic air, increases EPO levels. PURPOSE: To determine the effect of a single …
Effects Of Blood Flow Restriction Training On Vascular Function: Impacts Of Different Types Of Cuffs, Lin-Sheng Chen, Natalie Mclaurin, Philippe Brosselin Perez Palma, Daniela Charry, Taha Alhalimi, Hirofumi Tanaka
Effects Of Blood Flow Restriction Training On Vascular Function: Impacts Of Different Types Of Cuffs, Lin-Sheng Chen, Natalie Mclaurin, Philippe Brosselin Perez Palma, Daniela Charry, Taha Alhalimi, Hirofumi Tanaka
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Blood flow restriction (BFR) training is becoming a very popular form of resistance training in inducing muscular adaptations. Narrow-elastic bands (NE) and wide-rigid cuffs (WR) are two types of cuffs that are frequently used in BFR. Because these different types of BFR cuffs produce markedly different hemodynamic responses, vascular adaptations resulting from BFR training might differ depending upon what cuffs are used. PURPOSE: To examine the hypothesis that BFR with NE would improve vascular function while the use of WR would decrease vascular function. METHODS: Ten apparently healthy participants (7 females, 23±5 years) completed supervised BFR training 3 …
Effectiveness Of Different Recovery Postures During High-Intensity Interval Training, Daniela Charry, Tianyu Wang, Natalie Mclaurin, Kanokporn Leelartapin, Sonchai Ponlasen, Daroonwan Suksom, Hirofumi Tanaka
Effectiveness Of Different Recovery Postures During High-Intensity Interval Training, Daniela Charry, Tianyu Wang, Natalie Mclaurin, Kanokporn Leelartapin, Sonchai Ponlasen, Daroonwan Suksom, Hirofumi Tanaka
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has become a very popular mode of exercise practiced by elite as well as recreationally active adults since it is time efficient and can be adapted to a wide range of populations. A variety of postures have been practiced during recovery in HIIT. However, it is not clear what postural strategies would be best in enhancing recovery and improving performance in subsequent bouts of exercise. PURPOSE: To compare four recovery postures that are typically used by exercisers and to identify which posture facilitates the fastest recovery and better performance in subsequent bouts of HIIT. METHODS …
Tracking Fat-Free Mass Changes Over A Competitive Season In Elite Soccer Players, Christian Rodriguez, Tindaro Bongiovanni, Mathieu Lacome Rigobert, Grant M. Tinsley
Tracking Fat-Free Mass Changes Over A Competitive Season In Elite Soccer Players, Christian Rodriguez, Tindaro Bongiovanni, Mathieu Lacome Rigobert, Grant M. Tinsley
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The assessment of body composition in athletes throughout a competitive season can provide valuable information for coaches and practitioners as part of a general health assessment and to track training adaptations across a season. However, limited data are available to inform the capacity of common methods to accurately track longitudinal body composition changes in elite athletes. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the validity of common body composition techniques and their associated prediction equations to track fat-free mass (FFM) in elite soccer players over a competitive season. METHODS: A sample of 21 elite soccer players participated in …

Sacral Stress Fracture — Wrestling, Billal Siddiq, Nikolaos Gravvanis, Charalampos Kyratzoglou, Brett Hayes, Andreas Stamatis
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
CASE HISTORY: During preseason, a 35-year-old wrestler complained of pain in his lower back concurrently with a tingling sensation in the left thigh and buttocks. PHYSICAL EXAM: The wrestler was examined by a physical therapist (PT) and, while discussing prior medical history, the athlete mentioned a previous diagnosis of a mild herniated disk (Grade 1). Upon clinical examination, the athlete demonstrated a full range of motion with some discomfort in passive hip extension. The PT suggested rest and rehabilitation through electrical stimulation, alongside the strengthening of the lumbar spine and hip abductor muscles. Ten days later, the athlete …
Sublingual Caffeine Supplementation And Its Effects On Physical Performance Measures In Highly Fit United States Military Personnel, Reggie B. O'Hara
Sublingual Caffeine Supplementation And Its Effects On Physical Performance Measures In Highly Fit United States Military Personnel, Reggie B. O'Hara
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Caffeine is a commonly used countermeasure to combat sleep deprivation and alleviate physiological and psychological performance degradations in highly trained military personnel operating in extreme environments for extending periods. Although the mechanisms of action of caffeine are well described in the literature, the ergogenic effects of caffeine are variable based on the individual’s nutritional status, sensitivity to caffeine, genetics, dose, timing, and overall physical condition. PURPOSE: To explore the effects of moderate doses of sublingual caffeine on physical performance measures and perceptions of fatigue in highly fit U.S. military personnel. METHODS: A convenience sample of eleven highly trained, …
