Herstory: The Structuring Of The Fitness And Amateur Sport Branch's Women's Program: 1970-1988., Pamela Lynn. Ponic
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this thesis was to construct a feminist account of the dynamics that produced the Fitness and Amateur Sport Branch's Women's Program initiatives for the time period 1970-1988. In accordance with the theoretical framework the following sub-problems were investigated: (1) What structures facilitated and/or inhibited the agents' (the women involved in the program) ability to act? (2) How were the agents, in turn, able to alter, produce or reproduce structures affiliated with the program? (3) How did this process alter or maintain the agents themselves? The process utilized to investigate these sub-problems included an examination of federal archive …

Six species of waterfowl including greater scaup (Aythya marila), lesser scaup (Aythya affinis), bufflehead (Bucephala albeola), canvasback (Aythya valisineria), mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), and redhead (Aythya americana) were collected and analyzed for diet content, organic contaminant patterns (pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)), and stable isotope ($\sp{14}$C and $\sp{15}$N) signatures from 3 sites in the lower Great Lakes (Fighting Island, western Lake Erie, and Big Creek). Lesser and greater scaup from Fighting Island were classified into groups according to the percentage dry mass of zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) in the diet. Lesser and greater scaup classified as Dreissena-consumers had, on average, 85 …
Phosphotyrosine-Containing Proteins During Spore Germination Of Dictyostelium Discoideum., Mona Louise. Gauthier
Phosphotyrosine-Containing Proteins During Spore Germination Of Dictyostelium Discoideum., Mona Louise. Gauthier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This present study contributes to the growing hypothesis of signal transduction processes to be the underlining mechanisms which induce Dictyostelium discoideum spores to autoactivate and release nascent amoebae. This work focuses on the role of tyrosine phosphorylation during germination and the extracellular signals which govern the phosphorylation/dephosphorylation of specific protein(s) on their tyrosyl residues. Probing for phosphotyrosine-containing proteins during the germination program of this organism by Western blot analysis using anti-phosphotyrosine antibodies revealed at least ten proteins with relative mobilities between 207kDa and 32kDa. The pattern observed was shared by all strains examined, V12, NC4, SG2 and SG1, independent of …

A Study Of Thin Solid Organic Films By Fourier Transform Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering And Atomic Force Microscopy., Carol Ann. Jennings
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fourier transform surface-enhanced Raman scattering (FT-SERS) in the near-infrared and atomic force microscopy (AFM) have been used to characterize thin solid organic films. The pigments studied were phthalocyanines and perylenes which have applications as charge generation materials in organic photoreceptors. Techniques for film preparation such as Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposition and vacuum evaporation are discussed. The literature was reviewed for FT-Raman spectroscopy, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. A model according to Gersten and Nitzan was applied and SERS enhancement factors in the near-IR were calculated for various metal hemi-spheroids. FT-Raman spectra were presented for thin vacuum evaporated films of …

An Examination Of The Acceptance Of Construction And Demolition Waste Reduction Measures By Residential Building Contractors In Windsor And Essex County (Ontario)., Karl Dean. Tanner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Within the field of urban planning there is a growing recognition that the discipline must incorporate within its existing framework an environmental component that is sensitive to environmental concerns and which takes a proactive role. It is no longer possible to consider development in isolation without first looking at the consequences development has upon the natural and physical environment. The residential construction industry is seen as an industry where opportunity exists to reduce, reuse, recycle and recover material wasted during the construction process. The purpose of this study was to survey new residential building contractors in the Windsor/Essex County area …
An Assessment Of Bicycle Transportation Policy In Ontario., Patrick Joseph. Dunn
An Assessment Of Bicycle Transportation Policy In Ontario., Patrick Joseph. Dunn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examined Ontario's bicycle transportation policy. An attempt was made to understand why bicycle transportation is receiving attention and what conditions--political and practical--are necessary to increase bicycle use in Ontario's urban centres. Using the Netherlands as a policy model, the political factors driving bicycle transportation were identified as well as the practical components to increase bicycle travel. In the broader policy environment, substantive policy measures are motivated by a political necessity to limit automobile use, while supporting transportation alternatives. As policy is an important determinant of mode choice, bicycle transportation must be supported by pro-active policy. In addition, bicycle …

The Relationship Between Communication And Cohesion In Inter-Collegiate Rugby Players., Philip Joseph. Sullivan
The Relationship Between Communication And Cohesion In Inter-Collegiate Rugby Players., Philip Joseph. Sullivan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A study was undertaken to examine the relationship between communication and cohesion in inter-collegiate rugby players. Communication in many social systems has been found to be intimately related to other aspects of the group's functionality, including how affiliative or cohesive they are. Certain dimensions of communication are believed to facilitate a cohesive group, including interactions which are honest, supportive, open and direct. This style of communication has been labelled healthy communication. Because of the similarity between sports teams and families and the proven relationship between sport-specific communication patterns and cohesion, it was hypothesized that certain dimensions of communication would be …
Windsor Airborne Trace Metal Stratification Study (Ontario)., William Donald. Henderson
Windsor Airborne Trace Metal Stratification Study (Ontario)., William Donald. Henderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The results of this investigation show that the placement of air samplers for the accurate assessment of the concentration of airborne trace metals is critical. The collection of airborne metal laden particulate matter by filtration at different heights above the ground at three different locations in Windsor, Ontario, Canada demonstrated the importance of sampler placement. This air sampling strategy for investigation of airborne trace metals was modelled after that used by Ontario's Ministry of Environment and Energy for its "Cities of the 90's" air toxics program. This strategy included using a 47 mm Whatman 41 filter paper air sampling medium, …

Factors Affecting The Credibility Of Reference Letters., Vandana. Juneja
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to investigate factors which affect the perceived credibility of letters of reference. More specifically, two factors, those being length of the letter and quality of writing style, are examined. The study questions whether longer or shorter reference letters have different levels of perceived credibility. It also proposes that as the quality of writing style of reference letters improves, their perceived credibility increases. Participants in the study included a random sample of 110 recruiters from various companies in Canada, particularly in the Toronto, Ontario area. Each participant received one of six variations of reference letters …

Factors Regulating The Exposure Dynamics Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls In Two Fish Species, Oncorhynchus Mykiss And Pimephales Notatus., Susan. Coristine
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this research was to quantify the relative importance of biological and chemical properties in regulating the exposure dynamics of organic chemicals in aquatic ecosystems. This was achieved by (1) calibrating the bluntnose minnow (P. notatus) as a biomonitor, (2) examining the influence of chemical properties such as hydrophobicity and substitution patterns on chemical elimination rates and (3) examining the kinetics of the more toxic non-ortho PCBs. Elimination rate constants (k$\sb2$) for bluntnose minnow ranged from 0.00987 to 0.00116 (ug/kg/day) for compounds with octanol-water partition coefficients varying from 5.69 to 7.80. It was further determined that substitution patterns …

Field Independence-Dependence, Self-Concept And Playfulness In Preadolescents., Sandra Leanne. Bosacki
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this paper was to investigate the relationships between field independence-dependence (FI-FD), self-concept and playfulness in preadolescent girls and boys. Sixty-three sixth-grade students (33 girls, 30 boys) from four classes in three schools in Southwestern Ontario participated in the study, with each student completing the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT; Witkin, Oltman & Raskin, 1971) and The Self-Esteem Inventory (SEI; Coopersmith, 1967). The students' current teachers (2 female, 2 male) and those from the previous year (2 female, 3 male) completed the Playfulness-NonPlayfulness Scale (PF-NonPF; Lieberman, 1977a). Contrary to prediction, no significant gender differences or correlations were …
Fpga Implementation Of Rns Structures., Radhaselvi. Venkatesan
Fpga Implementation Of Rns Structures., Radhaselvi. Venkatesan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this thesis is to investigate the applicability of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) for residue arithmetic applications. FPGAs are programmable devices that can be directly configured by the end user without the use of an integrated circuit fabrication facility. They offer the designer the benefits of custom hardware, eliminating high development costs and manufacturing time. The Residue Number System (RNS) has often been proposed for custom hardware implementation of high throughput DSP algorithms. Residue arithmetic operations are easier to realize using small look-up tables, and since Xilinx FPGAs use look-up tables as configurable logic blocks, they are …

Hemispheric Differences In Global/Local Processing: The Effects Of Attentional Allocation., Shemira. Murji
Hemispheric Differences In Global/Local Processing: The Effects Of Attentional Allocation., Shemira. Murji
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study employed global/local stimuli to investigate RT performance of normal controls on divided and directed attention tasks. The purpose of the present study was two-fold: (1) to examine the role of attentional factors in global versus local processing, and (2) to investigate hemispheric differences in hierarchical visual processing. The results indicated that response times were significantly faster under the directed attention condition compared to the divided attention condition. The data, however, failed to support the hypothesized left hemisphere/analytic and right hemisphere/holistic dichotomy that predicts hemispheric superiority in local versus global processing. Evidence from the present investigation is consistent with …

Organizational Effectiveness In A Human Service Context., Andrea. Plotnick
Organizational Effectiveness In A Human Service Context., Andrea. Plotnick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Human service organizations (HSOs) are increasingly being called upon to demonstrate their effectiveness. Yet there is both an absence of appropriate management models for HSOs and often a lack of recognition of inherent differences among HSOs. One important dimension on which HSOs can be differentiated is operational certainty, defined here as environmental certainty, technological determinacy and formal structuralization. Two descriptions of office skills-training programs were developed, to represent each end of the operational certainty dimension. A college-based office skills-training program was described with high environmental certainty, high technological determinacy and high formal structuralization and a community-based office skills-training program was …
Perceptions Of Leadership Effectiveness Of Traditional And Participative Organizations And Supervisors., Stuart Mitchell. Silverman
Perceptions Of Leadership Effectiveness Of Traditional And Participative Organizations And Supervisors., Stuart Mitchell. Silverman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study assessed the effects of hierarchical (traditional) and participative organizational structures, and autocratic (traditional) and participative styles of supervisory leadership, on perceptions of job satisfaction, the quality of the relationship between the supervisor and employees, and productivity and overall success, in a hypothetical manufacturing organization. One hundred and seventy-two students at the University of Windsor responded to a questionnaire. The questionnaire depicted four scenarios in which the supervisor was portrayed to lead either autocratically or participatively, and the organizational structure was portrayed as either hierarchical or participative. As hypothesized, the results revealed that participative as opposed to traditional …

Quadratically Constrained Convex Quadratic Programmes., Wieslawa Teresa. Obuchowska
Quadratically Constrained Convex Quadratic Programmes., Wieslawa Teresa. Obuchowska
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis we consider four problems arising from our study of quadratically constrained convex quadratic programmes (QCQP). The first problem concerns the representation of a quadratically constrained convex feasible region. We define the term "minimal representation" and give necessary and sufficient conditions for a representation to be minimal. The second problem deals with boundedness of quadratically constrained convex feasible regions. In particular, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for unboundedness which are in the form of an algorithm which requires the identification of implicit equality constraints in homogeneous linear systems. The third problem is concerned with feasible regions which …
Robert Herrick's "Hesperides" And The Renaissance "Querelle Des Femmes"., Maria. Magro
Robert Herrick's "Hesperides" And The Renaissance "Querelle Des Femmes"., Maria. Magro
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Robert Herrick's Hesperides is a volume of poetry preoccupied with the feminine. Indeed, the presentation of women in Hesperides reflects a larger cultural preoccupation with the feminine seen in Renaissance literature in general and in the cultural documents of the querelle des femmes (1540-1648) in particular. This Renaissance preoccupation with the feminine, in turn, displays both a blatant and latent cultural misogyny. In the documents of the querelle des femmes women are discussed in their various social roles: mother, wife, and daughter. Though the ostensible concern of these texts is the female role within the family and society, an idiom …
Impact Of Childhood Sexual Abuse In The Development Of An Eating Disorder In Adulthood., Thomas A. Ruttan
Impact Of Childhood Sexual Abuse In The Development Of An Eating Disorder In Adulthood., Thomas A. Ruttan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The relationship between childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and the later development of eating disordered symptomatology in 74 women undergoing psychotherapy is examined in this exploratory study. Many of the studies in this area have treated CSA as a dichotomous variable. Others have assessed levels of CSA, but have employed only objective measures of CSA severity. This study assesses the relationship of both objective and subjective levels of CSA severity to the later development of eating disordered symptomatology. Self-report measures were developed and employed to assess (a) the objective severity of the CSA, (b) the subjective severity and impact of the …

The present study examined the effect of priming with individualistic or communalistic values on the decision to hire a Black or White job candidate. The experimental design was a 3 (value priming group) x 2 (applicant qualifications) x 2 (gender of participant) factorial. Introductory psychology students read and responded to an individualistic, a communalistic, or a neutral values survey. Half the participants then read profiles of two equally qualified job candidates, one Black and one White. Unequal qualifications condition participants read profiles of a Black and a relatively better qualified White candidate. Participants then indicated whom they would hire and …
Neuropsychological Subgroups Of Patients With Alzheimer's Disease., Nancy Justina. Fisher
Neuropsychological Subgroups Of Patients With Alzheimer's Disease., Nancy Justina. Fisher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Neuropsychological test data from 134 patients diagnosed with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) were studied, to investigate whether subgroups of patients with qualitatively distinct neuropsychological profiles could be identified. Three empirical classification approaches were undertaken in this regard: Q-type factor analysis, hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis, and iterative partitioning (i.e., k-means). It was theorized that there may be different underlying pathways of neuropathological progression of AD, such that the brains of those with spared semantic knowledge or visual-spatial/constructional abilities are initially affected asymmetrically. Furthermore, an earlier proposed neuropsychological model of AD accounting for these variations in early clinical presentation is extended and …
Inventory Control Considerations In Multi-Period Models Of Cellular Manufacturing Systems., Ali A. Mohamed
Inventory Control Considerations In Multi-Period Models Of Cellular Manufacturing Systems., Ali A. Mohamed
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent developments in manufacturing technologies indicate that the adoption of cellular manufacturing technology has been an essential step in improving factory performance and productivity in batch manufacturing industries. For this purpose, however, additional innovative methods are needed to further reduce product cost and lead time and to enhance product quality to help increase market share and profitability. The adoption of the group technology concept allows small batch production to achieve economies similar to those of mass production while retaining the flexibility of the smaller job shop. In this research, four mathematical models of inventory control within a cellular manufacturing system …
John Donne's Epithalamia: The Marriage Of "Text" And "Context"., Kimberly Ann. Feyen
John Donne's Epithalamia: The Marriage Of "Text" And "Context"., Kimberly Ann. Feyen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
John Donne's epithalamia, "Epithalamion made at Lincolnes Inne," "An Epithalamion, Or marriage Song on the Lady Elizabeth, and Count Palatine being married on St. Valentines day," and the "Epithalamion" for the Earl of Somerset, when compared to other groups of poems written by Donne, especially the Songs and Sonets, receive relatively little critical attention. Perhaps Donne's marriage songs are so often overlooked because they are believed to be restricted not only by the patronage system, but by the nature of the genre itself. In this thesis, I have attempted to illustrate that, despite the tendency of critics to dismiss them …
An Exploratory Study Of Community Support For The Elderly 85 Years And Older., Margomary. Hawkes
An Exploratory Study Of Community Support For The Elderly 85 Years And Older., Margomary. Hawkes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines that segment of the population which is variously referred to as the 'old old' (Neugarten, Croty and Tobin 1964; Neugarten and Miller 1964), and the 'frail elderly' (Baker 1988; Novak 1988)--which this study will refer to as the 'most elderly'. These are people who are eighty-five years of age and older. Since Canadians are living longer and healthier lives, the questions arise: how is society preparing for a larger older population, and how are the present 'most elderly' dealing with the day-to-day exigencies of life? Since these 'most elderly' were born just before or just after the …
