Persistent Oral Dyskinesias Induced By Long-Term Haloperidol Treatment Is Dissociated From Changes In Neostriatal B(Max) And Mrna Content For Dopamine D(2) Receptors, Nuoyu Huang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to the presumed associations of dopamine (DA) receptor supersensitivity phenomena in both long-term neuroleptic-treated tardive dyskinetic rats and neonatal 6-hydroxydopamine (n6-OHDA)-lesioned rats, we studied the influence of haloperidol on n6-OHDA-lesioned rats. At 3 days after birth rats received 6-OHDA-HBr (200 $\mu$g, bilateral intracerebroventricularly; desipramine pretreatment, 20 mg/kg, 1h) or vehicle. Two months later haloperidol (1.5/kg/day $\times$ 2 days/week for 4 weeks, then 1.5 mg/kg/day, every day for 10 months) was added to the drinking water. Spontaneous oral activity of intact and n6-OHDA-lesioned rats receiving haloperidol was reached and maintained at significantly higher levels after 15 weeks of haloperidol treatment. …

Body Image Disturbance In Relation To Attributions Of Physical Attractiveness And Social Competence In College Women., Christine Louise. O'Connor Jan 1995

Body Image Disturbance In Relation To Attributions Of Physical Attractiveness And Social Competence In College Women., Christine Louise. O'Connor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the relationship between eating-related attitudes and behaviors and the body figures chosen to present each participant's current body size, her ideal one, the one she judges to be most physically attractive to men, and the one she believes is most socially competent. One hundred and thirty-eight undergraduate women responded to the Figure Rating scale, the Eating Attitudes Test, and an open-ended question asking them to explain their choice of ideal body figure. Abnormal eating-related attitudes and behaviors were detected in 11.6% of the sample. Perceived current body size and the difference between current and ideal sizes …

Psychotherapy's Impact On Society., Peter. Cobrin Jan 1995

Psychotherapy's Impact On Society., Peter. Cobrin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Psychotherapy's impact on society is examined by comparing the relevant literature on the issue with themes generated from 24 semi-structured interviews with practising psychotherapists. The process of transforming the interview material into a hierarchical arrangement of themes is based on Rennie's (1992) version of Grounded theory. The study is also based on Lather's (1991) attempt at combining critical theory with social constructionist inquiry. Generally, the main purposes of this study are: (1) to better understand how psychotherapists make sense of their role in society; (2) to assist psychotherapists in thinking about these issues; and (3) to incorporate the experiences of …

Leadership And Culture: Developing A Constructivist Approach To Social Organizing., Edward Murray. Vokes Jan 1995

Leadership And Culture: Developing A Constructivist Approach To Social Organizing., Edward Murray. Vokes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An alternative social constructivist based approach to leadership and culture management is developed for, and evaluated in conjunction with, a five member senior management team for a large social service agency. The research is praxis-oriented, emergent in design, and emancipatory in its intent (Lather, 1991; Morgan, 1993). Lincoln and Guba's (1985) method of Naturalistic Inquiry is used to guide the conduct of the inquiry. The central purposes of the study are to: (1) develop a constructivist based theory of social organizing through the conceptual integration of leadership and culture; (2) design and conduct a training and application initiative focused on …

The Relationship Between Memory Disruptive Effects Of Rem Sleep Deprivation And Neuropsychological Dissociations Of Task Requirements., James Arthur. Conway Jan 1995

The Relationship Between Memory Disruptive Effects Of Rem Sleep Deprivation And Neuropsychological Dissociations Of Task Requirements., James Arthur. Conway

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study explores the relationship between human REM sleep and time-dependent memory consolidation processes. Specifically, it was hypothesized that differential effects on retention produced by post-learning REM sleep deprivation may be explained in terms of neuropsychological dissociations of task requirements. In order to test this possibility, a variety of memory tasks were assembled to be representative of subsets within both explicit/declarative and implicit/procedural domains. These include: Word Recognition, Word Fragment Completion, Tower of Hanoi, Corsi Block-Tapping Task, and the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure. Thirty-five undergraduate students from Trent University, Peterborough served as subjects. Subjects were presented with the stimulus materials …

Constructing Codependency: An Exploration Of Subjective Definitions Using Q-Factor Analysis., Jonathan James. Douglas Jan 1995

Constructing Codependency: An Exploration Of Subjective Definitions Using Q-Factor Analysis., Jonathan James. Douglas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Using an epistemology based on social constructionism, this project explored the foundations, and subjective impact, of the term, "codependency." The definitions of "codependency," its historical antecedents in the disturbed Personality Hypothesis applied to wives of alcoholics, and the empirical and feminist critique of the theory were examined. Some reasons for women's acceptance of the term were outlined, and the possibility that codependency can be a feminist construct is reviewed. Based on Q- Methodology as described by S. R. Brown (1980) and C. Kitzinger (1987), the subjective definitions of the word were analyzed. Twenty-seven semi-structured interviews, designed to illuminate the participants' …

Contextual Influences On Parental Directive Speech Style., Cornelia Linda. Illman Jan 1995

Contextual Influences On Parental Directive Speech Style., Cornelia Linda. Illman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the present study the stability of parental directive speech styles was examined across contexts and over time. Two variations in contexts were considered--setting and group size. Comparisons were made of parental speech styles between two settings: freeplay and supper, and two group sizes: dyads and polyads. A developmental comparison was also conducted, evaluating the speech used at two supper sessions that were spaced six months apart. The parental speech styles examined were concerned with the use of follow versus lead utterances, i.e., utterances which related to the child's current focus of attention (follow), or utterances which were unrelated to …

The Conflict Tactics Scale: Assessing The Meaning, Context, And Consequences Of Partner Violence., Renee A. Cormier Jan 1995

The Conflict Tactics Scale: Assessing The Meaning, Context, And Consequences Of Partner Violence., Renee A. Cormier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to test if the Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS) is a valid measure of the incidence/prevalence of partner violence and whether it overestimates the comparability of male and female victimization. Similar to other studies using the CTS, 36% of females and 52% of males reported being victimized by either a current or past partner. Significantly more females (55%) than males (34%) reported perpetrating an act from the CTS. Responses on the CTS would therefore suggest that females are more violent than males and that males suffer more abuse, but the supplementary information concerning the …

The Family Inventory Of Resources For Management: Content Validity And Utility Among Mothers Living At Home With Adult Sons/Daughters Who Have Developmental Delays., Elizabeth Jane. Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current study explored the use of internal and external resources, that were identified as helpful, by mothers who had adult sons/daughters with developmental delays living at home. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 28 mothers (ranging in age from 47 to 79 years) and analyzed qualitatively using a "constant comparative" approach. Ten categories of resources emerged from the analysis namely, Community Agencies, Employers, Family Members, Friends/Neighbours, Health Professionals, Husbands, Informal Networks, Personal Resources, Religious Faith, and Schools. However, a correlational analysis revealed that the only category significantly related to the Family Inventory of Resources for Management (FIRM), a test designed …

The Person-Job Fit: Implications Of Selecting Police Personnel On The Basis Of Job Dimensions, Aptitudes And Personality Traits., Brenda A. Tomini Jan 1995

The Person-Job Fit: Implications Of Selecting Police Personnel On The Basis Of Job Dimensions, Aptitudes And Personality Traits., Brenda A. Tomini

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research was to examine how well aptitude and personality measures combined could predict job performance and job satisfaction, for a sample of entry-level police constables. In the first phase, eight job analyses were conducted on various entry-level policing positions using the Position Analysis Questionnaire (PAQ). Upon comparing the resulting eight profiles, using a variety of techniques, it was determined that all jobs analyzed were similar and could be considered as one job for the remainder of the analyses. In the second phase, seven raters were asked to conceptually link the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF) second-order …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research study was conducted to evaluate the "New Leaf" Anger Management Program of the John Howard Society of Windsor. The theoretical orientation focussed on symbolic interactionism and behaviourism. Certain aspects of both theories were applied to the data collected. The methodology used was a semi-structured interview and group observation. The statistic used was a paired t-test. The sample consisted of sixteen participants. In the interviews, the participants reported they had some immediate benefits from the program. However, the paired t-test showed no significance between the ANPI before and after the program. The program did not differ from those described …

Experiential Epistemology: Design, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Systemic-Constructivist Instructional Method., Richard J. Holigrocki Jan 1995

Experiential Epistemology: Design, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Systemic-Constructivist Instructional Method., Richard J. Holigrocki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A systemic-constructivist theory is developed and an experiential instructional method that is coherent with the theory is designed, implemented, and evaluated. Systemic-constructivist theory is based upon general systems theory and constructivist theory. Individuals are viewed as actively involved in understanding their world through psychological structures that are continually being revised in the context of experience. From this perspective, experiential transactions with the world are viewed as the core referents of both language and conceptual abstractive processes. The systemic-constructivist theory provides the structure from which experiential instructional method is derived. A pilot study and two experiments were carried out to evaluate …

Factors Affecting The Acceptability Of Assisted Suicide., Gayle. Vincent Jan 1995

Factors Affecting The Acceptability Of Assisted Suicide., Gayle. Vincent

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the current research was to contribute to the debate on assisted suicide by describing: (1) circumstances under which assisted suicide is regarded as an acceptable option, and (2) personal characteristics that mediate acceptance of assisted suicide. Participants rated scenarios constructed in a factorial design based on the presence (versus absence) of the following factors: terminal illness, physical incapacitation, severe pain, mental incapacitation, and an expressed wish to die. Contrary to the proposed hypotheses, each of these variables alone increased the acceptance of assisted suicide, regardless of whether or not a wish to die had been expressed. Further, …

Self-Report Of Depressive Symptomatology And Daily Hassles: Effects Of Instructional Set, Gender, And Gender Role Orientation., Karen Anne Marie Holowaty Jan 1995

Self-Report Of Depressive Symptomatology And Daily Hassles: Effects Of Instructional Set, Gender, And Gender Role Orientation., Karen Anne Marie Holowaty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has demonstrated that experimental cues, whether overt or subtle, intended or unintended, affect experimental behavior. More specifically, investigators from various research areas have shown that cues within a testing or experimental setting can affect responding to self-report instruments. Differences in the self-report of depressive symptomatology and daily hassles according to gender, gender role orientation, and manipulated instructional set were investigated. It was hypothesized that both depression scores and hassles scores would differ according to manipulated instructional set. It was also hypothesized that the depression and hassles scores of males and females would differ significantly, and that scores would …

Psychological Adjustment To Breast Cancer: Congruence Of Locus Of Control And Information And Decision-Making Participation., Betty Jane. Kirkland Jan 1995

Psychological Adjustment To Breast Cancer: Congruence Of Locus Of Control And Information And Decision-Making Participation., Betty Jane. Kirkland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Forty-two breast cancer patients were interviewed to examine the relationship between psychological adjustment to breast cancer, current locus of control orientation, and treatment approach (i.e., amount of medical information received and degree of treatment participation). Specifically, the present study tested Reid's (1984) "congruence hypothesis" which suggests that a treatment approach congruent with locus of control orientation is associated with better psychological adjustment than a mismatched approach. Psychological adjustment was assessed with the profile of Mood States (McNair, Lorr, & Droppleman, 1971, 1992) and three subscales--emotional adjustment, sexual adjustment, and appearance satisfaction--of the Mastectomy Attitude Scale (Heyl, 1977). Locus of control, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A randomized telephone survey of gambling behaviour was carried out in the Metropolitan Windsor (Ontario) area. The survey, which was based on the South Oaks Gambling Screen, captured information on gambling activities, problem gambling behaviours and demographic characteristics. The lifetime prevalence of problem gambling and pathological gambling was found to be 2.6% and 1.6% respectively. The prevalence of problem and pathological gambling in the year previous to the study was found to be 1.4% and 0.8% respectively. Variables, such as attitude towards gambling, gender, family income and membership in a religious group were found to discriminate between gamblers and non-gamblers, …

The Relationship Between Communication And Cohesion In Inter-Collegiate Rugby Players., Philip Joseph. Sullivan Jan 1995

The Relationship Between Communication And Cohesion In Inter-Collegiate Rugby Players., Philip Joseph. Sullivan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study was undertaken to examine the relationship between communication and cohesion in inter-collegiate rugby players. Communication in many social systems has been found to be intimately related to other aspects of the group's functionality, including how affiliative or cohesive they are. Certain dimensions of communication are believed to facilitate a cohesive group, including interactions which are honest, supportive, open and direct. This style of communication has been labelled healthy communication. Because of the similarity between sports teams and families and the proven relationship between sport-specific communication patterns and cohesion, it was hypothesized that certain dimensions of communication would be …

Hemispheric Differences In Global/Local Processing: The Effects Of Attentional Allocation., Shemira. Murji Jan 1995

Hemispheric Differences In Global/Local Processing: The Effects Of Attentional Allocation., Shemira. Murji

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study employed global/local stimuli to investigate RT performance of normal controls on divided and directed attention tasks. The purpose of the present study was two-fold: (1) to examine the role of attentional factors in global versus local processing, and (2) to investigate hemispheric differences in hierarchical visual processing. The results indicated that response times were significantly faster under the directed attention condition compared to the divided attention condition. The data, however, failed to support the hypothesized left hemisphere/analytic and right hemisphere/holistic dichotomy that predicts hemispheric superiority in local versus global processing. Evidence from the present investigation is consistent with …

Organizational Effectiveness In A Human Service Context., Andrea. Plotnick Jan 1995

Organizational Effectiveness In A Human Service Context., Andrea. Plotnick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human service organizations (HSOs) are increasingly being called upon to demonstrate their effectiveness. Yet there is both an absence of appropriate management models for HSOs and often a lack of recognition of inherent differences among HSOs. One important dimension on which HSOs can be differentiated is operational certainty, defined here as environmental certainty, technological determinacy and formal structuralization. Two descriptions of office skills-training programs were developed, to represent each end of the operational certainty dimension. A college-based office skills-training program was described with high environmental certainty, high technological determinacy and high formal structuralization and a community-based office skills-training program was …

Perceptions Of Leadership Effectiveness Of Traditional And Participative Organizations And Supervisors., Stuart Mitchell. Silverman Jan 1995

Perceptions Of Leadership Effectiveness Of Traditional And Participative Organizations And Supervisors., Stuart Mitchell. Silverman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study assessed the effects of hierarchical (traditional) and participative organizational structures, and autocratic (traditional) and participative styles of supervisory leadership, on perceptions of job satisfaction, the quality of the relationship between the supervisor and employees, and productivity and overall success, in a hypothetical manufacturing organization. One hundred and seventy-two students at the University of Windsor responded to a questionnaire. The questionnaire depicted four scenarios in which the supervisor was portrayed to lead either autocratically or participatively, and the organizational structure was portrayed as either hierarchical or participative. As hypothesized, the results revealed that participative as opposed to traditional …

Impact Of Childhood Sexual Abuse In The Development Of An Eating Disorder In Adulthood., Thomas A. Ruttan Jan 1995

Impact Of Childhood Sexual Abuse In The Development Of An Eating Disorder In Adulthood., Thomas A. Ruttan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and the later development of eating disordered symptomatology in 74 women undergoing psychotherapy is examined in this exploratory study. Many of the studies in this area have treated CSA as a dichotomous variable. Others have assessed levels of CSA, but have employed only objective measures of CSA severity. This study assesses the relationship of both objective and subjective levels of CSA severity to the later development of eating disordered symptomatology. Self-report measures were developed and employed to assess (a) the objective severity of the CSA, (b) the subjective severity and impact of the …

Individualism-Communalism And Employment Equity: The Effects Of Value Priming On Hiring Decisions., Helen B. Ofosu Jan 1995

Individualism-Communalism And Employment Equity: The Effects Of Value Priming On Hiring Decisions., Helen B. Ofosu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the effect of priming with individualistic or communalistic values on the decision to hire a Black or White job candidate. The experimental design was a 3 (value priming group) x 2 (applicant qualifications) x 2 (gender of participant) factorial. Introductory psychology students read and responded to an individualistic, a communalistic, or a neutral values survey. Half the participants then read profiles of two equally qualified job candidates, one Black and one White. Unequal qualifications condition participants read profiles of a Black and a relatively better qualified White candidate. Participants then indicated whom they would hire and …

Neuropsychological Subgroups Of Patients With Alzheimer's Disease., Nancy Justina. Fisher Jan 1995

Neuropsychological Subgroups Of Patients With Alzheimer's Disease., Nancy Justina. Fisher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Neuropsychological test data from 134 patients diagnosed with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) were studied, to investigate whether subgroups of patients with qualitatively distinct neuropsychological profiles could be identified. Three empirical classification approaches were undertaken in this regard: Q-type factor analysis, hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis, and iterative partitioning (i.e., k-means). It was theorized that there may be different underlying pathways of neuropathological progression of AD, such that the brains of those with spared semantic knowledge or visual-spatial/constructional abilities are initially affected asymmetrically. Furthermore, an earlier proposed neuropsychological model of AD accounting for these variations in early clinical presentation is extended and …
