Modelling Stored Grain Microclimates With Dual-Region Heat Transfer Models, Alexsandar Antic Jan 2003

Modelling Stored Grain Microclimates With Dual-Region Heat Transfer Models, Alexsandar Antic

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Australia's reputation is well established in the international marketplace as a producer of high-quality grain. We remain competitive by exporting grain in accor dance with a 'nil tolerance' for live insects. Protecting the grain while in storage means maintaining such a reputation is difficult and costly as one must deal with such factors as varying climatic conditions, particularly temperature, which can have an adverse affect on grain quality and insect infestation. An understanding of the flow of heat in grain store structures is very important from many industrial perspec tives, and the heat transfer within the peripheral layer is of …

The Intensification Of Labour Market Polarisation In Metals Manufacturing In Australia In The 1990s, Terri Mylett Jan 2003

The Intensification Of Labour Market Polarisation In Metals Manufacturing In Australia In The 1990s, Terri Mylett

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In Australia during the 1990s, jobs offered by employers had increasingly differentiated standards of wages, conditions and security. For some workers, this has meant experiencing wages and working conditions that challenge the Australian tradition that employment will be sufficient for avoiding poverty and securing the reproduction of labour. The trend of polarisation nationally was also evident in the Metals Manufacturing industry and in the lllawarra region. The two most significant developments in Metals Manufacturing in the 1990s were (i) the rise in casual employment (including labour hire); and (ii) the masculinisation of employment in the industry, including non-standard employment. These …

The Social Shaping Of Wind Power In Australia, Andrea Maree Bunting Jan 2003

The Social Shaping Of Wind Power In Australia, Andrea Maree Bunting

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis examines the history of wind power in Australia from the late 1970s to the early 2000s, informed by the body of theory known as the Social Shaping of Technology (SST). Until recently, wind power played a negligible role in power generation apart from for remote area power supplies. Following the introduction of two renewable energy support mechanisms in the late 1990s, Australia experienced the beginnings of a 'wind rush'.

It is argued that the treatment of wind power should be explained using a synthesis of a contextual historical approach and an interpretive approach.

The contextual approach focuses on …

The Colonisation Of Scientific Uncertainty: Liminality & Agency In Science Boundary Work, Sandrine A. Thérèse Jan 2003

The Colonisation Of Scientific Uncertainty: Liminality & Agency In Science Boundary Work, Sandrine A. Thérèse

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The thesis focusses on the traditional problem of demarcation in science through the study of the politics of scientific "boundary work" and cultural cartography amidst scientific controversies where claims about the constitution of science and its "other" are asserted, contested and renegotiated. Human and non-human agents and agency are characterised via recourse to a critical practice theory and performative idiom approach where dialectical interactions between social structures and between collective, individual and natural agents are axiomatic. The study aims to provide a multi-sited ethnography of how notions of scientific convention and deviance are (re)defined in the course of scientific practice. …

Distribution And Provenance Of Heavy Minerals In The Surficial Sediments Of The Minnamurra Estuary And The Adjacent Shelf Between Minnamurra And Bass Point New South Wales-Australia, Rabea A. Haredy

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Provenance and spatial distribution of heavy minerals have been investigated in the Minnamurra estuary and the adjacent shelf in NSW , Australia. Heavy mineral assemblages in the sand fractions (63-250µm) of 124 sediment samples were assessed using microscopic and microprobe analyses. In addition to the dominant opaque minerals, twelve translucent heavy minerals species were identified. The translucent assemblage is dominated by pyroxene, zircon, tourmaline and hornblende. The heavy mineral assemblage identifies multiple sources that are not restricted to the local geology. The proportion and occurrence of heavy minerals from non-local source rocks reflect reworking of quartz sand from the outer-shelf …

Investor Protection In A Disclosure Regime: An International And Comparative Perspective On Initial Public Offerings In The Bangladesh Securities Market, Sheikh M. Solaiman Jan 2003

Investor Protection In A Disclosure Regime: An International And Comparative Perspective On Initial Public Offerings In The Bangladesh Securities Market, Sheikh M. Solaiman

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The Disclosure-Based Regulation (DBR), a regulatory regime useful for the developed securities markets, was adopted in 1999 for an embryonic securities market in Bangladesh. The new philosophy came into effect without any significant changes being made in the old legal and regulatory framework of initial public offerings (IPOs). Based on the structural and infrastructural growth achieved so far, the Bangladesh IPO market is unable to utilise the benefits of the DBR mainly because of the overwhelming dominance of individual small investors, a serious lack of full and fair disclosures, the non-availability and non-affordability of investment advisory services, and a critical …

Half The Story: Olympic Women On Abc News Online, Dianne M. Jones Jan 2003

Half The Story: Olympic Women On Abc News Online, Dianne M. Jones

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study examines the treatment of ehte Australian female and male athletes in the new sports media. A content analysis of Olympic Games coverage, within a selected sample of bulletins on ABC News Online, was conducted from September 13 to October 2, 2000. The analysis addressed both the amount and nature of coverage during the sample period. The data suggest the biased practices of the traditional sports media may have migrated to online sports journalism. Yet they also indicate an improvement in both the extent of women's sports coverage and the range of sports covered. Female and male athletes received …

Using Intelligent Agents To Identify Trends In Multi-Dimensional Databases, Surapong Rattanaphuwalux Jan 2003

Using Intelligent Agents To Identify Trends In Multi-Dimensional Databases, Surapong Rattanaphuwalux

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The widespread use of relational and other database technologies has given rise to enormous data stores, in both private and government organisations. Faced with these vast data stores, many organisations have seen the need for sophisticated analytical tools that allow users to view summary data from any required perspective. This need has been met, in part, by the development of Multi-Dimensional Data Bases (MDDBs) and associated On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) tools. MDDBs extract data from conventional databases and store it in partially aggregated form, while OLAP tools allow users to manipulate that aggregated data with ease. Such manipulation includes the …

Delta18o Signatures From Modern And Fossil Equatorial Pacific Microatolls: Indicators Of Mid-Late Holocene Enso Variability, Matthew Robert Beech Jan 2003

Delta18o Signatures From Modern And Fossil Equatorial Pacific Microatolls: Indicators Of Mid-Late Holocene Enso Variability, Matthew Robert Beech

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis examines the skeletal oxygen isotope ratios of modem and fossil massive Pontes microatolls from the reef flat and interior of Christmas Island, central equatorial Pacific Ocean. It has been known since the 1970s that the calcium carbonate skeletons of corals retain an oxygen isotopic ratio that is a function of the temperature and the isotopic signature of the sea water in which they live. Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and rainfall variation in the equatorial Pacific are major components of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon that dominates the ocean-atmosphere interactions of the equatorial Pacific. However, a limiting …

Correction Of Transmission Contamination In ⁶⁷Ga, Subhash Chand Kheruka Jan 2003

Correction Of Transmission Contamination In ⁶⁷Ga, Subhash Chand Kheruka

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) is a tomographic technique used for measurement of radiotracer concentration in vivo. The effect of attenuation and Compton scatter severely impacts the quantitative accuracy of SPECT images. Direct measurement using a transmission technique is the most accurate way of compensating for attenuation. This thesis cover SPECT study using ^^Ga, but has relevance to other radionuclides with multiple energies. Since post-injection transmission is required, the transmission and emission data are acquired simultaneously using ^^^Gd and ^^Ga respectively. The disadvantage of simultaneous acquisition is the contamination of transmission data by the spillover from the 93.5 keV …

Ergodic Transformations That Generate The Carathéodory Definition Of Measurable Sets, Amos Nathan Koeller Jan 2003

Ergodic Transformations That Generate The Carathéodory Definition Of Measurable Sets, Amos Nathan Koeller

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Motivated by a pedagogical argument about the existence of intuitive interpretations of the important definition of measurable sets given by Caratheodory [7] in 1914 this thesis defines the concept of a transformation which generates the definition of Caratheodory, and describes transformations which posses this property. In doing so, particular attention is paid to the relatively uninvestigated behaviour of the outer measures of sets invariant under ergodic transformations. The investigation of sets invariant under ergodic transformations also considers the ergodic tool of tower extensions of transformations and their effect on transformation invariant sets, the transformation properties of invariance, mixing (in the …

Filipino Women And Their Citizenship In Australia: In Search Of Political Space, Glenda Lynna Anne Tibe-Bonifacio Jan 2003

Filipino Women And Their Citizenship In Australia: In Search Of Political Space, Glenda Lynna Anne Tibe-Bonifacio

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This research examined the meaning and practise of Australian citizenship in the lives of migrant Filipino women in Australia. It utilized the life story approach and participant observation in Sydney and Wollongong. The narratives were analysed using a combination of feminist theoretical models of women's citizenship to underscore the different ways they construct a political space in negotiating their subject position as wives, mothers, paid workers, volunteers, electors, and members of community groups. Filipino women have a high valuation of Australian citizenship. Their motivations to become Australian citizens are not only based on the practical benefits derived from that status …

Investigating The Basis Of Leptin Resistance, Shu Lin

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Obesity is a major predisposing factor for a variety of life threatening diseases such as Type II diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart diseases, resulting in enormous financial costs. Although recent research has demonstrated the importance of the central regulation of body energy balance, information on the development and maintenance of chronic cliet-induced obesity is still sparse. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the progressive course of development of chronic high fat diet-induced obesity. To achieve this goal, Experimental Section A was conducted to feed the mice with a high or low fat diet for up to 19 weeks …

Tension Regulation And Reflex Modulation During Lenghtening And Shortening Actions Of The Human Triceps Surae, Gavin Pinniger Jan 2003

Tension Regulation And Reflex Modulation During Lenghtening And Shortening Actions Of The Human Triceps Surae, Gavin Pinniger

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Lengthening muscle actions differ in many aspects from shortening and isometric actions. Although a great deal of research has examined mechanical and, to a lesser extent, the neural characteristics of dynamic muscle actions, still little is known about the regulation of muscle force during lengthening and shortening actions. Therefore, this thesis examined the mechanical and neural aspects of lengthening and shortening actions of the plantar flexors, and more specifically the triceps surae. All experiments were conducted on the triceps surae using a custom built ankle torque motor to accurately control angular displacement, velocity and acceleration during lengthening, shortening and isometric …

Design And Synthesis Of Novel Alpha1 Adrenoceptor Modulators, Susan J. Mcginty Jan 2003

Design And Synthesis Of Novel Alpha1 Adrenoceptor Modulators, Susan J. Mcginty

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A constitutively active Cys128 Phe mutant of the α1B-adrenoceptor has been shown to not only activate G-protein coupling in the absence of an agonist, but also activate only a single effector pathway (phospholipase C but not phospholipase A2). This suggests that in the case of the α1B-adrenoceptor, a single receptor subtype forms multiple conformations for G-protein interactions that are specific for a particular G-protein/effector pathway. The existence of this receptor opens up possibilities for the specific modulation of the receptor pathway. Specifically, the development of small molecule ligands which activate a single active …

Drugs To Combat Premature Labour: The Design And Synthesis Of Potential Inhibitors Of Crh, Jody Morgan Jan 2003

Drugs To Combat Premature Labour: The Design And Synthesis Of Potential Inhibitors Of Crh, Jody Morgan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Antagonists of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) were investigated as a means of preventing premature birth. Five ligand-derived pharmacophore models of the CRH-R1 receptor were generated using Catalyst®. Analysis of these models revealed the most important features to be a hydrogen bond acceptor, located on one of the nitrogens of a heterocyclic ring, a π-stacking feature, located on an aryl ring and three hydrophobic aliphatic features, one about the hydrophobic chain of a tertiary nitrogen and the other two in the 2- and 4-positions of an aryl ring. The Series la pharmacophore model was the most statistically valid model generated, having the …

Fractionation Of Arsenic In Port Kembla Harbour Sediments, Damris Muhammad Jan 2003

Fractionation Of Arsenic In Port Kembla Harbour Sediments, Damris Muhammad

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In order to elucidate major natural control on the diagenetic behaviour of arsenic in the sediments Port Kembla Harbour, a heavily industrialized port, vertical profiles of total and species of arsenic in porewater and total arsenic in different sediment solid phases and grain size fractions were measured. Four sediment solid phases were "operationally defined" as exchangeable, AVS, reducible and residual. Under an oxygen free atmosphere the samples were sliced to 2-cm thick layers and wet sieve to separate the sediment particles of < 63, > 63 and > 250 μm sizes. A four-step sequential extraction protocol was applied to these sieved samples to extract …

The Synthesis Of Carbocyclic Hydantocidin And 6,7-Di-Epi-Carbocyclic Hydantocidin Via A Phosphine-Catalysed (3+2) Cycloaddition, Tien Quoc Pham Jan 2003

The Synthesis Of Carbocyclic Hydantocidin And 6,7-Di-Epi-Carbocyclic Hydantocidin Via A Phosphine-Catalysed (3+2) Cycloaddition, Tien Quoc Pham

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

this thesis describes the total synthesis of the carbocyclic analogue of hydantocidin and its 6,1-di-epi diastereoisomer. The essential feature of the carbocyclic analogue of hydantocidin was the spirocyclic structure, which consisted of a functionalised cyclopentane ring attached via a spiro carbon to a hydantoin ring. This structure was produced via a phosphine-catalysed cycloaddition reaction of an appropriate alkyne or allene with an electron deficient alkene. Two regioisomers are possible from this cycloaddition, regioisomers A and B.

Our retro-synthetic analysis revealed two possible pathways for the synthesis of the spirocyclic ring system. In pathway A, the functionalised cyclopentane can be produced …

This thesis examined the use of event-related potentials as a means of detecting feigned recognition memory impairment. In seven studies, undergraduate students were instructed either to complete a recognition memory test to the best of their abilities, or to simulate accidentrelated memory loss. These studies extended previous research by investigating electrophysiological differences between the control and malingering tasks (1) for stimuli which differed in linguistic frequency, (2) in tests which varied the format of word presentation, (3) during the initial encoding of the stimuli, and (4) using ERP components not previously considered in studies investigating the detection of malingering. The …

The Technological Trajectory Of The Automatic Identification Industry: The Application Of The Systems Of Innovation (Si) Framework For The Characterisation And Prediction Of The Auto-Id Industry, Katina Michael Jan 2003

The Technological Trajectory Of The Automatic Identification Industry: The Application Of The Systems Of Innovation (Si) Framework For The Characterisation And Prediction Of The Auto-Id Industry, Katina Michael

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Traditionally the approach used to analyse technological innovation focused on the application of the techno-economic paradigm with the production function as its foundation. This thesis explores the rise of the evolutionary paradigm as a more suitable conceptual approach to investigating complex innovations like automatic identification (auto-ID) devices. Collecting and analysing data for five auto-ID case studies, (bar codes, magnetic-stripe cards, smart cards, biometrics and RF/ID transponders), it became evident that a process of migration, integration and convergence is happening within the auto-ID technology system (TS). The evolution of auto-ID is characterised by a new cluster of innovations, primarily emerging through …

A Study Into The Effects Of Fission-Fragment Damage On Activation Energies In Ag/Bi2223 Tapes, Damián Marinaro Jan 2003

A Study Into The Effects Of Fission-Fragment Damage On Activation Energies In Ag/Bi2223 Tapes, Damián Marinaro

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Ag/Bi-2223 tapes doped with small quantities of highly enriched uranium were prepared by the powder-in-tube process and irradiated with thermal neutrons. The resulting fission fragments create randomly splayed quasi-columnar defects that provide strong flux pinning. Significant improvements in the field and angular dependence of the critical current density and in the irreversibility field were observed at 77 K, increasing with the density of fission tracks. In tapes with equivalent fission track density, the observed increases are larger for the samples exposed to larger neutron fluences (where a lower uranium doping level requires higher neutron fluence to obtain the same fission …

Weld Path Optimisation For Rapid Prototyping And Wear Replacement By Robotic Gas Metal Arc Welding, Michael Siminski

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Rapid prototyping (RP) is a large and rapidly growing industry with many different processes either under development or already available commercially. These processes offer fast and flexible production of objects from a wide range of materials. They vary from being able to produce only prototypes of products, through to being suitable for production of finished products ready for service. Rapid prototyping by robotic gas metal arc welding (GMAW) uses metal deposited by the GMAW process to build metal products with engineering properties suitable for service conditions. Wear replacement (WR) involves the repair of worn metal surfaces through the deposition of …

The Forgotten Forests : The Environmental Regulation Of Forestry On Private Land In New South Wales Between 1997 And 2002, James Prest Jan 2003

The Forgotten Forests : The Environmental Regulation Of Forestry On Private Land In New South Wales Between 1997 And 2002, James Prest

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis examines the regulation of private native forestry in two Australian jurisdictions: NSW and Tasmania. Private forests have long been the forgotten forests - a neglected aspect of forest policy in Australia. Appropriate supervision of private native forestry (PNF) is important because private forests are home to much threatened biodiversity, and as they make up a significant proportion of the total area of native forests in NSW. PNF also makes a substantial contribution to total timber production in NSW. Research was conducted into the administration of environmental laws applying to PNF in NSW between 1997-2002 in order to assess …

Contributions To Image Encryption And Authentication, T. Uehara Jan 2003

Contributions To Image Encryption And Authentication, T. Uehara

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Advanced digital technologies have made multimedia data widely available. As multimedia applications become common in practice, security of multimedia data has become main concern. Digital images are widely used in various applications, that include military, legal and medical systems and these applications need to control access to images and provide the means to verify integrity of images. Image encryption algorithms protect data against unauthorized access. In almost all cases image data is compressed before it is stored or transmitted because of the enormity of multimedia data and their high level of redundancy. Compressing plaintext before applying the encryption algorithm effectively …
