Perlimplín: Lorca's Drama About Theatre, Sharon G. Feldman

The contemplation of a theatrical work as a type of semiotizing machine which generates a network of signification systems, implies, a priori, the task of specifying the boundaries which define the object of analysis. Hence the dichotomy of text and performance has long been recognized as uniquely inherent in the theatre genre and, therefore, a logical preoccupation of the theatre semiotician. As indicated by contemporary theoretical work (such as that of Patrice Pavis and Anne Ubersfeld), it would appear that the role of the spectator in the reception of a performance is finally coming into view as an essential aspect …

Sociologists continue to be vexed by the pathology of urban violence: Why is it so random, so fierce, so easily triggered? One answer may be found in our Southern past.

Minority And Majority Student Group Perceptions Of Preferred Change Within A University Setting, John G. Bradberry
Minority And Majority Student Group Perceptions Of Preferred Change Within A University Setting, John G. Bradberry
Master's Theses
The present study tested the usefulness of a non -traditional method of gathering and structuring qualitative data regarding minority and majority group perceptions of a shared organizational environment. The goal of the method was to minimize the investigator's direct control over the information gathering process, thereby accurately capturing the subjective realities of the groups without relying on a single, externally imposed standard. An item-sorting methodology and subsequent hierarchical cluster analytic procedures identified two major issues differentiating participant groups: (1) the generation and categorization of ethnic-content items, and (2) levels of emotionality in the generation and rating of items. The present …
Canadian Federal Policy Towards Indian Education Since Confederation: Policy Making And Its Philosophy, Ling Yang
Master's Theses
Canadian Indian education is a complex problem in Canada's history. For the native people, education is the only way to preserve their cultural tradition. For the government, it has been the main means to assimilate the natives into the mainstream of the society. Because the majority culture has dominated Canadian society for more than two centuries, the Canadian federal government's policy and its making are the keys to understanding Indian education. Based on research in official records in the National Archives of Canada and field-research in Canadian Indian Reserves, this thesis shows that the federal government did not accept "Indian …

A Result On Dillon's Conjecture In Difference Sets, James A. Davis
A Result On Dillon's Conjecture In Difference Sets, James A. Davis
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
Dillon has conjectured that any group of order 22d+2 with a normal subgroup isomorphic to Z2d+1 will have a difference set. He was able to show that this is true if the subgroup is central: this paper extends that idea to noncentral subgroups.
Difference Sets In Abelian 2-Groups, James A. Davis
Difference Sets In Abelian 2-Groups, James A. Davis
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
Examples of difference sets are given for large classes of abelian groups of order 22d + 2. This fills in the gap of knowledge between Turyn's exponent condition and Dillon's rank condition. Specifically, it is shown thatℤ/(2d)×ℤ/(2d+2) andℤ/(2d+1)×Z/(2d+1) both admit difference sets, and these have many implications.
Certification And Civil Rights, Carl W. Tobias
Certification And Civil Rights, Carl W. Tobias
Law Faculty Publications
In this 1991 article, Carl Tobias responds to Professor Arthur Miller's suggestion that Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 11 should not be prematurely revised.
"Professor Miller's admonitions may convince some observers, especially those authorized to propose revisions in, or to amend, the Rule that there is little wrong with Rule 11's application and that the federal judiciary simply needs a few more years to refine the implementation of this new concept. Numerous problems, however, remain substantial and some may be intrinsic or even irremediable, while certain litigants, especially civil rights plaintiffs, cannot afford to wait. I trust that Professor Miller's …
A Note On Products Of Relative Difference Sets, James A. Davis
A Note On Products Of Relative Difference Sets, James A. Davis
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
Relative Difference Sets with the parameters k = nλ have been constructed many ways (see (Davis, forthcoming; Elliot and Butson 1966; and Jungnickel 1982)). This paper proves a result on building new RDS by taking products of others (much like (Dillon 1985)), and this is applied to several new examples (primarily involving (pi, pj, pi, pi-j)).

The World The Liberal Capitalists Made (Book Review), Edward L. Ayers
History Faculty Publications
Review of the book, Slavery and Freedom: An Interpretation of the Old South by James Oakes. New York: Knopf, 1990.
Slavery and Freedom pursues its thesis with dogged energy. "Southerners took their definition of freedom from the liberal capitalist world which produced them and of which they remained a part," Oakes argues, "and this could only mean that southern slavery was defined as the denial of the assumptions of liberal capitalism."
James Branch Cabell's Jurgen : Fulfillment And Paradox, Elizabeth Witham Loving
James Branch Cabell's Jurgen : Fulfillment And Paradox, Elizabeth Witham Loving
Master's Theses
James Branch Cabell's controversial, Jurgen, is the novel that propelled him into fame. Suppressed as pornography only months after its publication, Jurgen drew attention from many areas. While Cabell's peers protested the suppression and praised the novel as a masterpiece, other readers were only interested in the forbidden "racy" language. Unfortunately, it was for the second reason that Jurgen became the most widely read of Cabell's works. The general public was not interested in his talent as a writer, but it was interested in a scandalous book. The novel's suppression received so much publicity, that everyone wanted to read …
Antebellum Southampton County, Virginia, 1840-1860, Richard Tyler Kanak
Antebellum Southampton County, Virginia, 1840-1860, Richard Tyler Kanak
Master's Theses
This thesis is a descriptive account of life in antebellum Southampton. Established by the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1749, Southampton County gained notoriety as the site of Nat Turner's slave rebellion. Fears of another armed slave revolt prompted the Virginia General Assembly to enact a series of stringent slave codes, which remained in effect until the Civil War. Primary sources consulted in the preparation of this thesis include corporate records, church manuscripts, court order books, reports of county and state officers, tax journals, and personal papers of the county's contemporary citizens.
