Direct Hyperbilirubinemia And Infant Characteristics In A Newborn Intensive Care Population, Maritza Chavez, Holly Kastendieck, Jessie R. Maxwell, Dawn Novak

2024 Pediatric Research Forum Session

Background: Direct hyperbilirubinemia is frequently encountered in the NICU and is always a pathologic condition. It is exceedingly difficult to distinguish between common causes of direct hyperbilirubinemia based on laboratory work-up alone. Through retrospective chart review we aim to better establish the incidence of risk factors and progression of direct hyperbilirubinemia in the NICU, with the goal of streamlining the secondary evaluation.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted for neonates admitted to the University of New Mexico Hospital NICU from February 1st, 2019, through February 1st, 2022 who had a direct hyperbilirubinemia level of .5 …

Updating The Critical Congenital Heart Disease Screen For Inclusion Of An Intensive Care Population, Ryan Grammens, Joe Lopez, Jessie R. Maxwell Apr 2024

Updating The Critical Congenital Heart Disease Screen For Inclusion Of An Intensive Care Population, Ryan Grammens, Joe Lopez, Jessie R. Maxwell

2024 Pediatric Research Forum Session

Background: Critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) is a serious concern for newborns, accounting for 6-10% of infant deaths. A screening mechanism using pre- and post-ductal saturations was adopted by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in 2012 for detecting such lesions. This screening guideline was limited in application to healthy term newborns. Thus, preterm infants or infants requiring supplemental oxygen support often receive the CCHD screening just before discharge when the opportunity to use to screen identify possible congenital heart disease has passed. We aimed to develop a guideline consistent with the AAP 2018 recommendations and to provide guidance for …

Utilization Of Dexmedetomidine Positively Impacts Length Of Hospitalization In A Neonatal Intensive Care Population, Austin Carrier, Dane G. Winter, Zoe Henderson, Jessica Gross, Eleni Shenk, Jessie R. Maxwell

2024 Pediatric Research Forum Session

Background: Pain medication use in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) can be highly challenging due to concerns for negative impact on long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. Many commonly utilized pain medications and sedatives such as midazolam, fentanyl, and morphine have problematic side effects, for example, decreased gut motility, that can prolong time to full feeds and increase hospital length of stay. Dexmedetomidine may be a safe alternative, although ongoing investigations are needed to determine which patient populations may safely receive this medication.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed of term infants admitted to the NICU at the University of New …

The Descent Of Anolis: Assemblages, Convergence, And Ecomorphological Evolution, Christopher Anderson Apr 2024

The Descent Of Anolis: Assemblages, Convergence, And Ecomorphological Evolution, Christopher Anderson

Biology ETDs

The evolutionary outcomes we observe in modern organisms, particularly associations between phenotypes and environments, have been and remain an invaluable tool in interpreting the biological phenomena that shape our world. In the following chapters, I leverage a comprehensive phylogenetic and morphological dataset for 351 species comprising a diverse group of arboreal lizards, the Anolis clade, to explore how communities and morphologies evolve. First, I characterized patterns among coexisting lineages of Anolis to reveal a general pattern of phylogenetic relatedness among lineages comprising assemblages and identify differences attributable to a biogeographic variable. Then I examined the morphological consequences associated with the …

Electrodeposition Of Gadolinium Metal Thin Films For Neutron Phase Contrast Imaging, Mary Louise Gucik Apr 2024

Electrodeposition Of Gadolinium Metal Thin Films For Neutron Phase Contrast Imaging, Mary Louise Gucik

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

A rare earth metal, gadolinium has unique magnetic properties and the largest neutron absorption cross section making it highly sought after in emerging technology. However, unlike most metals, it is difficult to work with and lacks a damascene process. When incorporated into alloys, gadolinium’s properties are muted and the film thickness must increase to account for the low concentration. Gadolinium metal films have been deposited successfully through sputter coating, but these films have density deficiencies and are limited to line-of-sight substrates. In this work, the deposition of gadolinium metal thin films was investigated for use on complex geometries via electrophoretic …

The Role Of Spreading Depolarizations In Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries, Natalie J. Pinkowski Apr 2024

The Role Of Spreading Depolarizations In Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries, Natalie J. Pinkowski

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) often lead to acute symptoms like disorientation and discoordination, but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Although most patients recover quickly from a single mTBI, repeated injuries can be debilitating. After an mTBI, a neurometabolic cascade produces metabolic burden and vulnerability. Spreading depolarizations (SDs) have been observed after mTBIs. Here we investigated SDs’ role in short-term motor behavioral deficits post-mTBI. We hypothesized that SDs contribute to the deficits, and exacerbated symptoms after repeated mTBIs. To test this, we used acute motor behavioral tests and long-term behavioral and cognitive tests after initiating SDs by mTBI, chemical, or …

Formulation, Characterization, And In Vivo Immunogenicity Evaluation Of Heat-Stabilized Dissolvable Polymeric Microneedles, Aidan Lane Leyba

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

Since its introduction, vaccination has improved health outcomes tremendously. However, modern vaccination efforts are still difficult to implement, particularly in developing countries with warm climates. This includes complex and expensive cold-chain management of vaccines to maintain stability, a lack of medical personnel to administer parental vaccines, and needle phobia. As an alternative, dissolvable microneedles have recently been studied for their simple and painless application. In this thesis, I present a novel manufacturing process for polymer-based dissolvable microneedles, loaded with virus-like particles vaccines conjugated to TRIO or Sialokinin peptides to target malaria and arboviruses, respectively. We have performed multiple characterization studies …

New Insights Into T Lymphocyte-Mediated Immunity To Toxoplasma Gondii, Claire M. Doherty Apr 2024

New Insights Into T Lymphocyte-Mediated Immunity To Toxoplasma Gondii, Claire M. Doherty

Biology ETDs

With nearly a third of the global population infected with the protozoan, Toxoplasma gondii, this parasite sits at a unique, immune-mediated interface of health and disease. In healthy individuals, Toxoplasma results in a chronic yet asymptomatic infection of the central nervous system. This quiescent infection is the result of parasite exploitation of host immune barriers, yet Toxoplasma can quickly become an opportunistic pathogen when immunity is disrupted by illness or immunosuppressive therapies. During the HIV-AIDS pandemic, it was observed that once latent Toxoplasma infections became the cause of severe, even fatal, disease in the absence of an intact T …

N-Closure And N-Interior In Neutrosophic Topological Spaces, K. Damodharan, M. Vigneshwaran

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

Toplology greatly bene ts from the concept of-cloure. Its quiet nature to extended its proper ties in other topological spaces. So, with the concept of quasi-coincidence Ganguly and Saha pioneered and extensively examined the notion of-closure within the domain of fuzzy topological spaces.(FTS). The theory of-closure in intuitionistic fuzzy topological spaces (IFTS) was further extended by Seok Jong Lee and Yeon Seok Eom. In this work, the notion of N-closure in Neutrosophic Topological Spaces (NTS) is put forward and discussed.

Logarithmic Similarity Measure Of Neutrosophic Z-Number Sets For Undergraduate Teaching Quality Evaluation, Wen-Ping Chen, Yi-Ming Fang, Wen-Hua Cui

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

In practical decision-making problems, the different reliability levels of decision-makers in their evaluation information are usually ignored by most existing decision-making methods. Then, a neutrosophic Z-number (NZN) is a powerful model for simultaneously describing the restraint and associated reliability of evaluation information in view of truth, indeterminacy, and falsity Z-numbers. This paper first proposed a logarithmic similarity measure (LSM) of NZN sets, which is more flexible and can change its measure result by adjusting the exponential parameters of the restraint and reliability. Then, a multi-attribute decision-making approach is developed based on the presented LSM of NZN sets, and its applicability …

Analysis Of Neutrosophic Set, Julia Set In Aircraft Crash, M.N. Bharathi, G. Jayalalitha

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

A neutrosophic fuzzy set that generalizes the classical set is represented by a closed interval [0,1]. Let us generalize the fuzzy set to the Neutrosophic set, which is defined as three membership functions between interval]-0,1+ [. This paper examines the bird collision problem within a more grounded Neutrosophic framework. The collision between the bird and the aircraft is represented in the Neutrosophic domain as a stationary point because it occurs at a distance too great for any other auditory signal to discern. Numerous methods exist for solving the airplane problem, including a Julia set in complex numbers. Bird collisions resulting …
