Twentieth-Century Criticism Of Form In Tristram Shandy, Charles Parish Jan 1959

Twentieth-Century Criticism Of Form In Tristram Shandy, Charles Parish

English Language and Literature ETDs

One of the critical tenets of the twentieth century emphasizes the discreetness of the artist and the work of art. Whatever the artist has to say about his creation, whatever image of the artist may be found in his work, we look upon with interest; but that interest is an irrelevant interest and we recognize it to be so. The autonomy of the work of art is essentially inviolate. Whatever the extent of the artist's involvement in his work, we cannot, in justice to him and in justice to the continuum of artistic creation, credit him with it or discredit …

Family Organization In The Amazon Valley, Saul Benchimol Jan 1959

Family Organization In The Amazon Valley, Saul Benchimol

Sociology ETDs

The plan for this study of the Amazonian family was conceived when the author was living in the Amazon valley. His life in Manaus and other towns in the Amazon valley continuously brought to his attention the problems of family organization. These problems were brought into focus by studies made be Gilberto Freyre, Brazilian sociologist, who had made, thirty years previously, a study of the northeastern family. Later, other studies of the Brazilian family were made. They suggested a similar study of the family in the Amazon valley.

An Amplitude-Stable, Fixed-Frequency Transistorized Power Supply, Bobby O. Allen Jan 1959

An Amplitude-Stable, Fixed-Frequency Transistorized Power Supply, Bobby O. Allen

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The subject of this paper is the design of an ultrastable, fixed- frequency power supply capable of maintaining a high degree of amplitude stability over a wide range of resistive load values. The requirement for such a power supply originally arose in connection with the design of a particular piece of test equipment required by Sandia Corporation. No attempt will be made in this paper to justify or explain the necessity for the specified design criteria outlined in the following paragraphs other than to adequately define the design criteria.

The Influence Of Error Density On Error Detection Efficiency, Edward A. Ahr Jan 1959

The Influence Of Error Density On Error Detection Efficiency, Edward A. Ahr

Psychology ETDs

Statement of the problem.—It was the purpose of this study (a) to investigate the effect of error density (level, rate, or number of errors) on checking efficiency in a proofreading situation under normal conditions, i.e., comfortable working conditions without stress; and (b) to investigate the effects of experience in detecting errors at one level of density on the detection of errors at a later time in which the density level has been changed. This would show if there is a relationship between signal detection and habituation as well as signal density, and would reflect the possible role of learning in …

The Cavalry Comes Of Age: The Evolution Of Cavalry In The Army Of The Potomac; May, 1861 To June, 1863, Lessing H. Nohl Jr. Jan 1959

The Cavalry Comes Of Age: The Evolution Of Cavalry In The Army Of The Potomac; May, 1861 To June, 1863, Lessing H. Nohl Jr.

History ETDs

Numerous cavalry engagements during the first two years of the American Civil War found the mounted forces of the Army of the Potomac consistently inferior to their Southern counterparts. In frequent passages at arms the trooper in blue usually tasted not only defeat, but humiliation as well. The pages of Civil War history abound with accounts of such failure.
