Facial expressions play a crucial role in human communication, serving as a powerful means to convey emotions. However, classifying facial expressions using artificial intelligence (AI) can be challenging, especially with small datasets and images. Facial Expression Recognition (FER) is an active area of research, with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) being widely employed for classification. In this research, we propose a CNN-based approach for FER that utilizes both original and augmented datasets to enhance classification accuracy. Experimental results on the FER2013 dataset show test accuracies of 63.39% and 64.59% for the original and augmented datasets, respectively, in a seven-class classification task. …

Background: The Mental Health Optimization Checklist (MHOC) is a proposed measure which utilizes the theory of optimization science to improve mental health outcomes. Psychopathology is typically viewed dichotomously (i.e., does or does not have a disorder) or through cut-off criterion (i.e., 4 out of 5 symptoms, total scores), whereas optimization views psychopathology on a continuum on which patients can optimize factors impacting their mental health. Optimization theory is important for reducing stigma around mental health treatment and the MHOC offers itself as an informative psycho-diagnostic tool.

This thesis details the design and results of a circuit intended for infrared laser applications, specifically for transcranial infrared light simulation (TILS) experiments and for use as a range finder. The circuit itself is comprised of a transistor, high voltage power supply, laser diode, capacitor, resistor, diode, and low voltage pulse. The design of a range finder is also developed. The range finder design is the same as the circuit developed for TILs with the addition of a few more components for receiving the returned light pulse such as a photodiode, op-amp, and comparator. As Ovidian myth is a central influence on queer stories throughout time, I am interested in how the female/sapphic gaze impacts the retellings of these narratives. In this thesis, I analyze the action of the gaze as an expression of desire and discuss its multiple meanings in both text and performance. Through tracing the gaze within the queer/sapphic narratives of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire, I show that the gaze is an intersecting act through which non-normative desire is conveyed. Barriers to occupations and transitions to vocational opportunities can be difficult for adolescents and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD)s to feel confident and pursue job opportunities. Some of the problems stem from the stigma related to the individual’s disability, the contexts surrounding them, and the performance of the work tasks expected. Individuals with I/DDs expressed that not having enough support in the community and the workforce creates significant obstacles to retaining a job. Objective Transitioning from supported sitting position to standing activities requires coordinated interactions among postural muscles with appropriate reflexive responses to adapt to an increase in postural loading. Previous studies have found the failure to accommodate the challenge of increased postural loads in the stroke-impaired nervous system. In this study, we examined the H-reflex in response to different magnitudes of loads under static postural conditions, and compared the responses directly between individuals with a stroke-impaired nervous system and those with a non-neurologically impaired nervous system. Over 107 million individuals are thought to have alcohol use disorder (AUD) (Ritchie & Roser, 2018). Discontinuing drinking can be difficult, but social support is thought to promote sobriety efforts. The r/stopdrinking online public community supports such efforts. However, existing single-material AWH approaches have limited water harvesting yields due to alternated water capture, storage, and release stages, and only function within a high relative humidity range. Due to its insidious nature, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has declared CDI an urgent threat. Background: This study focuses on evaluating the effect of increasing duration allowed for resin infiltrant penetration in improving the aesthetic outcome of resin infiltration treatment. Additional investigations into repeat treatment and long-term stability were also conducted. Artifically created white spot lesions were induced on one hundred extracted teeth made up of either incisors or canines. In order to evaluate the efficacy of the skid recovery exercise in the Driver’s Edge teenage driving program, a process is established to determine the trajectories of vehicles from recorded videos, compare them in terms of similarity through dynamic time warping (DTW), and then analyze the similarity measurements to assess whether the program has a significant effect on driving ability by repeated measures analysis of variance (rANOVA). Although there are now over 10,000 confirmed and candidate extrasolar planets, accurate masses and radii have been determined for around 200 planets of less than 10 Earth-masses. This number will grow exponentially over the next decade as extreme precision radial velocity spectrographs see first light. The densities of small planets hint at a diverse range of compositions for terrestrial worlds from super-Mercuries to super-Ganymedes. Uncertainty in density is as low as 3% in the Trappist-1 system. Previous research has shown that HC is essential for forming new memories, spatial navigation, and temporal processing. While the function of ACC, located within the medial prefrontal cortex, remains controversial, it has a role in long-term memory recall, processing pain, monitoring current state, learning, schema updates, and information integrations. The current study examined the effects of perspective-taking and empathetic concern on attractiveness biases and stereotypes in Generation X and Millennial adults. Such biases and stereotypes are pervasive and can lead to preferential treatment and differential outcomes for individuals of varying attractiveness levels (see Langlois et al., 2000 for review). Previous research suggests that social media may amplify the importance placed on attractiveness, particularly for women (Fardouly et al., 2015; Perloff, 2014; Tiggemann et al., 2014; Toma & Hancock, 2018). This quality improvement project explored the implementation of the Alert Program's (AP) first and second phases within the Foundation for Positively Kids social skills program, PK Social ETC. This study focused on three staff members' perception of the Alert Program's usefulness on their clients' self-regulation skills and occupational participation when engaged in their daily social skills group. The Alert Program was delivered through weekly education sessions for the staff, followed by two groups involving the children to provide visual demonstrations for the staff over eight weeks.
