Psychosocial conditions are prevalent in pediatric oncology patients (Kahalley et al., 2013). Family and social support are essential aspects of a patient's health care outcomes (Merck & McElfresh, 2019). Anxiety and depression are common in pediatric oncology patients due to trauma during treatment (Pao & Kazak, 2015). These patients also can have preexisting developmental or behavioral conditions before starting treatment. Treatment side effects can also cause cognitive and behavioral changes (Nixon, 2014b). Anxiety in Children can develop into pervasive disorders in adulthood if not treated. Research shows dysfunctional Executive Function (EF) and anxiety are both shown to have a negative impact on math achievement in children and adolescents (Trezise & Reeve, 2018; Kalaycioglu, 2015; Owens, Stevenson, Hadwin & Norgate, 2012). Chung, Weyandt, and Swentosky (2014) found biological and neuropsychological support for EF as a unitary and multifaceted processor for regulating our emotional states as well as our daily procedures. Anderson’s (2002) model of Executive Control System (ECS) allows the factors of EF to be examined using a developmental approach towards EF processes. …

Rhythm is ubiquitous to human communication, coordination, and experience of music. In this dissertation, I address three empirical questions through three different methodologies, all of which contribute to the growing body of literature on human auditory rhythm processing. In Chapter 2, I present a registered report detailing the results of independent conceptual replications of Nozaradan, Peretz, Missal, & Mouraux (2011), all using the same vetted protocol. Listeners performed the same tasks as in Nozaradan et al. (2011), with the addition of behavioral measures of perception. Performing, listening, and moving to music are universal human behaviors. Most music in the world is organized temporally with faster periodicities nested within slower periodicities, creating a perceptual hierarchy of repeating stronger (downbeat) and weaker (upbeat) events. This perceptual organization is theorized to aid our abilities to synchronize our behaviors with music and other individuals, but there is scant empirical evidence that listeners actively perceive these multiple levels of temporal periodicities simultaneously. Schizophrenia is a debilitating mental disorder that affects up to 3% of the world population. The behavioral symptoms are categorized into positive and negative symptoms, which appear during late adolescence/early adulthood. Unfortunately, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms of the disease are poorly understood. Several hypotheses exist to explain mechanisms contributing to these behavioral alterations. One model proposes that a reduced function of the NMDA glutamate receptor on specific GABAergic interneurons may be responsible for deficits in schizophrenia. Post-mortem investigations provide evidence of reductions in both glutamate and GABA-related proteins in patients with schizophrenia. Further, GABAergic interneurons that are activated …

Educators concur that teacher competency requires more than teaching knowledge and skills; competency requires appropriate professional dispositions. The development of professional dispositions is an expected outcome of teacher education programs. Since 2002, program accreditation has been contingent on documentation that prospective teachers have met national standards for dispositions. The body of educational research on disposition assessment has been growing. Research on disposition learning and development, however, has been impeded by the prevailing conceptualization of dispositions as fixed traits resistant to change. The objective of this study is to develop a safety analysis system that integrates crash data and roadway related information. This system is developed in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment. It includes customized user interfaces to support queries to analyze data and to display results either in graphical or tabular formats. Despite a legal mandate to report suspected child maltreatment, the literature has consistently reported a failure by mandated professionals to report suspected maltreatment. Lack of knowledge regarding child maltreatment, reporting requirements and possible consequences of reporting have been cited as impediments to reporting. Previous research has recommended the development of training programs to address these hindrances. The Highway capacity manual (HCM, 2000) uses the Passenger Car Equivalents (PCE) to estimate the impact of trucks on freeways. PCE values for trucks recommended by HCM 2000 for level terrain are same under different truck percentages and different freeway conditions such as merging, diverging, weaving section etc. Several studies have shown that the PCE values vary for different traffic conditions such as for weaving, over-saturated conditions, etc. The objective of this thesis is to develop the PCE values for freeway merging sections using simulation software CORSIM. Accurately estimating the amount of time and effort required to complete a software development or maintenance project has proven problematic for business. A wealth of literature exists exploring each of the methods for estimating software development, but very little is devoted to understanding how project characteristics relate to estimation accuracy. This research examines expert estimation, the most widely used estimation technique, to determine the relationship between software project characteristics and estimation accuracy. Implications of the findings for research and practice are discussed.

The Effect Of Temperature On Development And Behavior Of Relict Leopard Frog Tadpoles (Rana Onca), Jeffrey Abraham Goldstein

Relict Leopard frogs (Rana onca) are found in thermal springs with water temperatures in excess of 30°C at the source but it's unknown whether tadpoles require reintroduction sites with specific thermal conditions for development. Tadpole survivorship at 20, 25 and 30°C was 84, 93.8, and 66%, respectively, while none survived at 35°C. Time to metamorphosis was significantly shorter for 25°C acclimation group (62+/-8 days) followed by the 30° (106+/-51 days) and 20°C (260+/-47 days) acclimation groups. Development was arrested in the 15°C acclimated group and survivorship declined to 63.8% after 191 days. However, 80% of the surviving larvae completed metamorphosis …

Traditional means for converting an engine to operate on hydrogen fuel incorporates port injection. The typical method for controlling emissions on a port injection engine is to operate the engine lean (typical AFR of 70:1) and/or incorporate an EGR system. The result of utilizing these methods is an appreciable reduction in power output. In August of 2004, the SAIC solar concentrator located at UNLV was retrofitted with a 24 module photovoltaic aperture in hopes of producing a new type of solar electric concentrator. Alter the initial solar testing began, it became very apparent that the receiver design did not supply adequate cooling of the silicone cells, leading to module deformation and eventual failure. Turnover in the top post was frequent, even during major fundraising campaigns. Prior to this study, presidential transitions during campaigns had not been previously analyzed. A numerical model has been created to predict the behavior of seat shock isolation systems exposed to mine blast loaDing The model is a two dimensional, five degree-of-freedom, rigid body, mass-spring-damper approximation of the seat system and human occupant. The Hispanic/Latino population represents the largest ethnic minority group in the United States, with immigrants comprising a substantial portion of this population. For both U.S.-born and immigrant Hispanic/Latinos, alcohol abuse and dependence is of particular concern given their reported high prevalence rates, the severe alcohol-related consequences that they experience, and the various barriers to obtain treatment that they encounter. In comparison to members of other ethnic groups, Hispanics/Latinos have the lowest rates of perceived need for treatment, the lowest past and current rates of participation in treatment and the highest dropout rates after attending just one counseling session. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect recent technology integration was having on teaching in the Church Education System (CES). Specifically, this study sought to identify (a) different configurations of technology use; (b) different forms and processes of support; and (c) examine the relationships between the two. The years between the American Revolution and the Civil War witnessed the prevalence of public disorder and social violence, especially in the expanding American West. In many instances, crowds took the law into their own hands and dealt summary vengeance on suspected criminals. This study delves into the political and legal climate of San Francisco in the 1850s to examine perhaps the most famous episodes of vigilantism in antebellum America; the San Francisco Vigilante Committees of 1851 and 1856. This study assesses the importance of cooperative tourism development in the Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai region. In particular, it analyzes the necessity and strategies for Macau to develop its casino gaming-centered tourism in collaboration with its two neighbor cities. Data were collected via face-to-face and email interviews with open-ended questions. Educators, executives, and government officials in the tourism industries in Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai were invited to participate in the interviews via a convenience sampling process. Major issues concerning nuclear waste storage at Yucca Mountain are that of safety and long term disposal. Approximately one percent of the content of spent nuclear fuel is that which is responsible for nearly all the long-term associated health risks.
