Locating Royce's Reasoning On Race, Marilyn Fischer
Locating Royce's Reasoning On Race, Marilyn Fischer

In the fall 2009 issue of The Pluralist, Tommy Curry and Dwayne Tunstall challenged the current, dominant view of Royce as an antiracist. In "Royce, Racism, and the Colonial Ideal," Curry presents Royce as a white supremacist, an admirer of British colonialism, and an advocate of black assimilation to Anglo-Saxon cultural practices (14-15). Tunstall, in "Josiah Royce's 'Enlightened' Antiblack Racism?," presents Royce as a non-essentialist regarding race, yet as a cultural antiblack racist, with a colonial attitude comparable to that held by John Stuart Mill (Tunstall 40). In the same issue of The Pluralist, Jacquelyn Kegley analyzes Royce's …

American state legislatures have evolved dramatically throughout their history. In particular, the structures, rules and procedures governing the operations legislatures have changed significantly over the course of the 20th and 21st Centuries. The purpose of this paper is to present a theoretical framework for studying the development and evolution of American state legislatures. We then apply that framework to the case of constitutional provisions impacting the legislative branch in Ohio and conclude that the initial decision to invest significant authority in the legislative branch significantly impacted the evolution of legislative evolution and development in the state.

The rise of social networking has connected us in ways unthinkable a few years ago, but has also raised alarming questions regarding the right to be left alone. More and more, Americans are discovering that information traditionally considered private is moving into the public domain, sometimes with startling implications for their personal lives. Part I of this Article reviews the problem of Internet intrusion into personal privacy. The Internet is especially remarkable for its three central features: reach, speed and permanence. These features make the Internet unlike any other media in existence, and makes protecting privacy extremely difficult. Part II …

The Impact Of The American Doctrine Of Discovery On Native Land Rights In Australia, Canada, And New Zealand, Blake Watson
The Impact Of The American Doctrine Of Discovery On Native Land Rights In Australia, Canada, And New Zealand, Blake Watson
School of Law Faculty Publications
In Johnson v. McIntosh, John Marshall proclaimed that European discovery of America “gave exclusive title to those who made it . . . .” 21 U.S. 543, 574 (1823). Marshall presented a revised version of the discovery doctrine in Worcester v. Georgia, 31 U.S. 515 (1832), yet it is Johnson that remains the leading decision on native property rights in the United States. The Johnson discovery rule has not only diminished native rights in the United States, but has also influenced the definition of indigenous land rights in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

The Role Of The Black Catholic Theologian And Scholar In Today’S Context, M. Shawn Copeland
The Role Of The Black Catholic Theologian And Scholar In Today’S Context, M. Shawn Copeland
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
Based on her keynote address delivered during the 2009 Annual Meeting at Atlanta University’s Lyke Center, Copeland takes a look back at the nearly forty-year history of black theological scholarship, reminding us of the intimate link between culture, history, and the ongoing and critical need for a theology that is authentic and responsive to the needs of the poor and marginalized. She reminds us of the urgency for the pursuit of truth and freedom, especially for black scholars and theologians. However, the quest for authenticity comes with a price.

"Meir b. Elijah of Norwich and the Margins of Memory" is a study of Meir of Norwich's use of acrostics to record his English Jewish identity. In the face of the 1290 Expulsion, which follows upon many episodes of anti-Jewish violence and antipathy, Meir attempts to have his name recorded in perpetuity. This essay details some of those moments of violence in order to give voice to Meir's world and to clarify Meir's desire to be remembered.

Lyotard, Beckett, Duras, And The Postmodern Sublime, Andrew Slade
Lyotard, Beckett, Duras, And The Postmodern Sublime, Andrew Slade
English Faculty Publications
Samuel Beckett's texts are populated with characters who have been so deprived of their humanity that humanity appears as essentially absent from his texts. The characters' presence in the diegesis is marked by unmistakable absences-absence of vision, of mobility, of sense, of name. Beckett's characters are often without: without hair, without teeth, without foreseeable future. The human character is at the limit of humanity and runs the risk of passing over into the grey zone of the inhuman. They lose track of their place, of their time, of their names. They frequently belong to no time and no place. When …
